if we're racing on monday, then tuesday is okay. >> when we go back to racing, this racetrack is completely different. what do you and jason have for your game plan? >> we can't do a lot right now, because the cars are on pit road so we have to restart the race. i anticipate most cars will be too loose and as the track rubbers in, it should start getting better. i thought our car improved. i think we still have some tweaking to do, too. hopefully it will start off with reasonable speed here in the first 20 to 30 laps until we get some rubber again. >> we have packers, babies, reasonable speed. we got it all in. chris? >> i wonder what he'll name his daughter. it won't be julius peppers, i don't believe. we have 40 minutes only of actual racing even though it's been three and a half hours. >> i can't wait to watch the rest of this race. it's going to be dramatic. >> close to an hour and 15 under

front. we're going to go through a little bit of the power steering issue. a little show and tell. >> i want to show you where that pump is located, folks. it's right here. what we're kind of talking about is the pump stopped working, and it got a leak here as far as the tank itself is concerned. when you take a look, this is whe where. about how these guys are going to have to drive these cars. to make it harder as far as getting grip on the front end, it makes it that much more difficult for the driver itself to be able to handle it. it's all about making that thing work. you see where it connects up to the steering wheel. that's what we're talking about, if they can get this thing on pit road, raise that hood again and maybe figure out what's going on underneath the hood. we can address these guys.

>> jeff, i don't think it would matter how big he is because that's just a job you can't handle these days with the way the cars are set up. >> joey logano said he had a fast car, but this is going to have some effect as we try to figure out a little bit with the timing and scoring here. we hear from carl edwards who said there was a little lull in the rain broadcast here, but he thought we would get it right. he's currently 16th. i want to talk about him because we talked in the pre-race show how roger penski and that group seems to have it together. edwards had his top five finish last week, but after his big year with wins, we expected him to be a championship challenge contender. >> none of those cars so far this year have shown a race for the championship. we talked to biffle early.

kyle busch usually dominant here at bristol. i think he's running 11th, but he hasn't had a car that we've seen charge to the front, which is highly unusual. i think this break has given the teams and the drivers a chance to talk about their cars, maybe try to figure out some sort of adjustments or strategy going into the last 375 laps of this baby so that they can try to get up front. >> alex bowman did go there in the paper capeer. he increased his twitter account by 2500-plus by chatting with us. and mibl, we've seen -- the good news is they're putting the cars back on, the rain has stopped. we have the dryers to kind of speed up the process here. we've seen some fast cars. how about some guys that are -- i don't want to call them sleepers but haven't made their moves yet? >> i think ryan newman can get up front. he's been strong all year long

with that team he's with. i think he'll have a fast car. another is paul menard. we talked to him earlier. he started last for an engine change. he had a strong third place finish last week in vegas. i think paul menard can become a factor in this baby before it's over. >> jimmie johnson has run the most laps but you saw the tire issue on 34. brad keselowski has run 26th, and logano and kurt busch has each led a lap. we'll continue, and it looks like they're ready to roll here in just a few moments from bristol. racecar drivers must concentrate in the loudest conditions!

ufr you have to focus on th 2013 championship run. there's significantly different rules. the suspension is different. that team might be a little bit behind because of their focus on 13, but if you're behind and you're having the results jimmie is having now, i think you're going to be just fine. >> we saw danica patrick a mommy ago. there's dale earnhardt jr. trying to make history if you tuned in a little bit late. currently 5th, and junior is 10th. danica was correct on that, but junior with a chance to have his fourth straight top two finish to open the season, and only richard petty has done that in the history of this sport. >> wouldn't that be pretty cool

if dale earnhardt jr. can put his name in the history books along with richard petty? did you see his eyes in that car? he's hyper focused, laser focused and ready to rock and roll. >> you cleaned up all the paper, you guys look good. >> the paper caper is over. we're at a quarter distance. we're not at the quarter pole. that's horse racing, so i got my metaphors mixed up and backwards. we're at quarter distance. a six-hour rain delay in daytona. the racing was okay before the delay, and then everybody thought they were racing the rain before the next shower could end it. i think we've got just that kind of perfect storm here today, these little pop-up showers that keep coming at us, any one of them, the last lap could be any time. it might not be lap 500. mother nature may decide that. i think we're in for a whale of a race. >> i know we are. you're not going to hold back now.

we have 125 laps under our belt. these guys got their cars adjusted, they're happy with the car. now you got to get up there on the wheel. we don't know. and when you don't know if you're going to race to halfway or the finish, you're going to give it all you got. let the cards fall where they may. if you run over somebody or somebody runs over you, that's just the way the cards fall because that's the way bristol is. >> larry, as crew chief, are you running to 500 laps or the next caution flag? >> i think we still have to think about racing for 500 laps. the crew chief will have to be on the pit box because we have night racing in bristol, but it's in august when it's 70 or 80 degrees. we have never raced at night here when it's been 40 degrees. i think there will have to be a lot of changes made as we get into the night, as it cools down, because we don't have enough to go on in these conditions. >> the drivers will have to think on, i have on a tinted

shield, do i need a clear shield on now? i have tape on my windshield for the sun and we don't have any sun. when you get in the car, have you ever gotten in a racecar with a wet shoe? >> yes. >> so you got to take some toilet paper and dry your shoe off and get ready to get in the car. these are metal. they've got correspoogation to them not so slick. a lot of things for drivers to get going again. >> pit crew members came here thinking all their pit stops would be in the daytime. now they'll possibly make pit stops at night. there's changes they have to make and you have to get pit road dry. >> let's have some fun while we're drying in pit road, what do you say? >> chris, one thing is for clear. going to be a lot of changes made as we transition into

nighttime here at bristol. >> i think, michael, this highlights crew chiefs, those teams, those pit crews along with drivers that can handle adjustments. it's a very different kind of race like we saw at the daytona 500. >> can you imagine the jobs of these crew chiefs? yesterday they had their cars fixed up just how they wanted them. they know what they have for a racecar, how it was acting soon the surface when it was green earlier, and now we have temperatures. temperatures will consistently fall, so the drivers and crew chiefs need to communicate. they have to understand each other and make some adjustments. >> dale earnhardt jr. was so happy about surviving that marathon day of the daytona 500, but he made it clear by saying, i can't remember when every lap, the intensity was there for every moment. not sure when the rain might force the rain to ce to be call.

>> you're exactly right, and you can't let one lap slip away where you're trying to pass another guy. you're trying to pass every lap. that's how intense racing at bristol is, anyway. you throw a little rain in there and know the action is there? it's heating up. >> those top two finishes we talked about, let's take a look back after that lengthy rain delay at the daytona 500. >> what about junior? he got a little tape on his grill, thought it might be a problem, turned out to be an advantage. he drove the best two laps of his life. that green light checker that propelled that con ffetti on hi head, that was good stuff. >> and top two finishes of the season. jeff gordon has never had forced top 10s to open the season. all these guys either hall of famers or on their way there. jeff gordon to be in that crowd

the radar, most of the heavier rain cells is around the area where we are. >> yeah, there's no moisture that shows up on the radar, so just a little lingering mountain shower that we're experiencing here. it's adding to the anticipation of getting this baby going again. how would like that feeling, chris? you had your car out there, you're dale jr. or you're tony stewart or you're kevin harvick, and you know you have a fast car, but you can't do anything with it. you want this thing to get going again so you can drive in the front. >> it was interesting to hear matt kenseth talk about, hey, we're in the lead, but we can anticipate what the track might look like. until we get going again, we really don't know. >> he's had an easy run of it so far. he's been in the front, hasn't had to pass a lot of cars and he's been in front. drivers say when their cars get in traffic, they handle much differently. so guys like jeff gordon who has experienced being in the rare and tony who have made

spinning him out when he was several laps down, wouldn't get out of his way. it looks like he didn't learn much. i was just passing the 24 car on the outside and he didn't show me a lot of respect. he raced me down in the corner and hit me. that's about what it amounts to. >> you had an awfully nice car and a good run going. >> it's just unfortunate when young people don't have respect for the people racing. >> waltrip back across the grass as here comes the white flag. the yellow flag comes out! and that means that the lap is not going to count, but can waltrip get it going? >> rusty wallace picks up $200,000, but this was earlier. as you can see, the tempers are hot when there's that much money on the line as quite a fight broke out just outside of the winner's circle here. officials and other team members moved in trying to break it up. >> dale earnhardt as they go

16, they've been all over each other. but really, truly, the two, kurt busch and the 20, they've passed each other a couple times prior to this. this is where greg biffle runs up here and he gives kurt a shot right there. that's kind of a wake-up call to kurt, i've got to go. i've got to get by tony. so he gets underneath him and i'm sure right there the spotter said clear up, clear up. no! too late. >> in the garage with kurt busch. kurt, what happened on the racetrack and then on pit road? >> you know, pit road was just me stopping there to make a point and only making the situation worse, so that was my fault. but out on the racetrack with tony, we raced 10, 15 laps side by side and didn't give an inch, but mission accomplished. he wrecked it and tough day for us. >> here's a look at the spin and contact. he just gets down underneath just ever so slightly.

tony comes down, no place for gordon to go, and here's tony on the front straightaway and watch this. and on pit road, stewart expresses his displeasure with jeff gordon. when he gets down here and gets this thing up, he may have more things. >> the two had a great run, and he got sideways and i got underneath him, and he just turned down on me, you know. i did everything i could to keep from hitting him because i don't want to take a guy on the last lap, but hey, i got the position. we're battling all the way to the end. this is bristol and i'm going to do everything i can for the position, and i don't see anything wrong with what i did. i thought it was pretty clean. i just wanted to say this was a great effort for us today. >> how about the retaliation? how about tony coming back at you? is that okay? >> that doesn't surprise me one bit. >> he said he wasn't surprised. i'm surprised he didn't hit him
