a homeless man, 24-year-old todd tharp. it turned physical. todd tharp was beaten up and ivan diaz was stabbed. >> all homicides are difficult. we do a thorough investigation on them all so it will take a while before we know what happened. police conducted interviews with todd tharp, friends and others. they are trying to figure out what prompted the argument. they say it is possible todd tharp acted in self-defense. other people in the park say he was peaceful. >> he was never violent. >> reporter: he carries that for what? >> protection. >> reporter: ivan diaz's friends said he was not a gang member. but had acquaintances who were. his family says he was an outgoing caring teen. >> i would like to know how it started. why -- what reasons did the guy

investigating three accidents involving people and vehicles that all happened in 24 hours. san francisco man was hurt after being hit by a bus yesterday morning. investigators say a bus was turning left when it hit a man in the crosswalk. police are using cameras to gather clues. a woman in her 60s is recovering after being hit by a car. it happened about 9:45 p.m. last night. the woman was in the crosswalk when she was hit. the driver of the car was sited for driving without a license. police are looking for a hit- and-run driver who injured a 80- year-old man about 8:45 p.m. last night. witnesses said the driver was behind the wheel of a gold pick up. anyone with information is asked to contact police. a female personal trainer who is transgender is suing the

the father who is accused of biting off the nose of his son made his first appearance in court this afternoon. ktvu's rob roth was in the courtroom and spoke with friends of the father and rob is live now in fairfield. rob? >> reporter: frank, friends and family of joshua cooper, the father were in court to show support. absent was the baby's mother who is now speaking out. >> reporter: 18-year-old joshua cooper was shackled during his court aexperience. he was charged -- court aexperience, he was charge -- court appearance. he was charged. police say joshua cooper bit off a third of the nose of his son because police say the baby wouldn't stop crying. >> my heart is broken. >> the mother is 16 years old. she says she was in the bath room when the trouble happened. >> 2 minutes later i come into

this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 p.m. details on a sting designed to keep alcohol away from minors. the california department of alcoholic beverage control says it is the largest operation of its kind in california history. 500 arrests this past weekend. ktvu's claudine wong with more on the operation that started with one very simple question. >> reporter: frank, police send minors into stores to see if they sell them alcohol, this time they stayed outside and asked people walking by to go in and buy it for them. call call was there -- ktvu was there as it went down. >> reporter: as the handcuffs were put on he didn't deny buying alcohol for a minor. >> look, i made mistake. >> reporter: he was arrested
