college. what they want the school to do now. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. self-defense. i carry the knife as a tool. last resort. >> was his life in danger? we heard from a man arrested today for stabbing a teen to death. julie haener is here now for what we are working on for 6:00 p.m. >> he says it was telephone -- i am julie haener. >> and i am frank somerville. >> he was he would speak to us. ktvu's cristina rendon is live where our camera recorded the interview at the jail. >> reporter: this man is homeless and he has been in jail less than 24 hours but he is already saying he did what he had to protect himself from that teen and his friends. >> i am sorry about all this.

>> reporter: he is apologizing from jail to the family of ivan diaz. he is taking responsibility for stabbing the 16-year-old last night. the question is, was it murder or self-defense. >> self-defense. i carry that knife as a tool. absolute last resort. never had to use it to protect my life before like that. >> he says he was jumped by idaho kids and his friends. -- by ivan diaz and his friends. >> kicked in the head 60 times. >> reporter: he pulled out his knife waving it around without realizing he was stabbing anyone. friends and family are devastated. >> i would like to know how everything started. why -- what reasons did he have to stab my brother. >> reporter: his sister is clinging to the last moments she shared with him last night. >> he ate, left, happy.

humble. >> reporter: todd tharp feels horrible and can't imagine what ivan diaz's family is going through but hopes they could forgive him. >> i don't feel good myself. even if it was in self-defense. >> reporter: investigators are looking into todd tharp's self- defense claims and trying to figure out whether or not this was gang related. todd tharp appears in court wednesday facing murder. cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. investigators released a photo of a woman who was found shot to death in her home. the body of the 45-year-old yunyi vhang was found friday by her 14-year-old daughter. police issued an arrest warrant for her husband feng mi, he is driving a 2013 silver toyota rav 4. he should be considered

armed and dangerous. hit-and-run driver accused of killing a woman. this was not the first deadly crash there. ktvu's john fowler investigated and joins us now live after questions the city on whether they plan to do anything about that street. >> reporter: this is the road. the woman died right here. but i want to show you something. these are the accidents that the police department showed me. there have been 11 accidents in 13 years. look at how the traffic comes right at you and the sidewalk is right here. many say the area is unsafe, the city says it plans to take no additional safety action. >> reporter: a mother of four had been living on the streets, sometimes with friends. onces say she was on this sidewalk where -- witnesses say

she was on this sidewalk where family gathered. >> have closure and just wanted to see it. it is hard. >> we obtained surveillance video showing her with her cart moments before the hit-and-run crash. police are looking for an older chevy pick up white with tan or blue, driver white male, late 40s. investigators say the truck hit her, smashing the sign and knocking her 50 feet. >> i didn't hear breaks. >> reporter: she lives a couple doors down. she knew her and found her in the middle of the road. >> i put my hand on her back. trying to feel -- you know, i prayed with her. >> despite struggling with life on the street she kept in touch with her family. >> she used to call me up and nowiowon't get -- and now i won't get that call anymore. it is hard. >> reporter: we are back live.

look at the silver barriers. this is a doctor's office that was hit two years ago by a jeep that also failed to make that corner. we talked to engineers who said they are receptive to the idea of doing more out here at this corner but till they get complaints from the citizens they will do nothing now. reporting live, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. a train hit and killed a man this morning in berkeley. he was 28 years old, matthew finch. it happened as the southbound train entered berkeley, there are no crossings there and it is not clear what he was doing on the tracks. the train traveled several blocks before it could stop and blocked four crossings during the investigation. they share the tracks and other trains were delayed. a woman is recovering after being burned in a house fire.

investigators are looking into what sparked the fire. it broke out about 10:00 a.m. this morning. three men nearby noticed the smoke and ran into the house to help. two women were inside the home at the time. the woman was badly burned and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. a father accused of biting off part of his son's nose made his first court appearance today. he did not enter a plea. he told police he bit his son out of frustration because the baby wouldn't stop crying. doctors performed a 5 hour stooge reattach the baby's -- surgery to reattach the baby's nose. the mother was in the bath room when the incident took place. >> two minutes i come in. i didn't see no anger that morning. no stress that morning. he was up playing with the

baby. . >> doctors say the baby suffered a brain hemorrhage and a fractured skull. it is not clear when those injuries occurred. the baby is still in the hospital and in the custody of child welfare services and the father is held on $750,000 bail. personal trainer is suing cross fit to compete against women. cross fit said she has to compete against men. she transformed from male to female 8 years ago. now she says she should be allowed to compete against other women. she is suing for 2.5 mullion dollars -- million dollars. >> i was shocked at their answer, you have to compete as the gender you were born as. >> cross fit did not respond to our request for comment. the case is scheduled for july.

many people are upset to see millions of gallons of water going to waste. ktvu's robert handa reported on this several weeks ago and tells us it is still going on. >> reporter: we are here at a familiar spot. it was a few weeks ago we showed them pumping in a million gallons of water into the creek and now more water will be loss. for these people it is a tough thing to watch during a drought. >> dumping 3 million gallons of water into the creek. a million a day over several days. the city flushes the water during repairs of wells due to concern of contamination but ktvu got complaints about a process where most of the water is lost. >> at home we are conserving more now. it would be nice to reuse this water. >> it would be possible to

the water department directly. live in santa clara, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco is exploring new ways to keep streets and sidewalks clean during the drought. every major california city uses some drinking water to clean streets and that san francisco is now working on a plan to recycle 4 million gallons of water per day for street cleaning purposes. they plan to discuss solutions later on this month. authorities arrested a man today on terrorism charges. the 20-year-old was taken into custody near washington and appeared in court this afternoon. authorities say he lives in stockton. and a member of the california national guard. the fbi says he was active on social media talking about his hatred for the united states. the fbi wrote he advised he wanted to fight in syria and

stated he needed to get his passport and would travel to canada via greyhound rather than traveling to syria directly from the united states. he faces one charge of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. 500 people facing fines after a weekend sting of adults buying alcohol for minors. they call it the largest decoy operation ever. >> ktvu road along with the police department as it teamed up with police officers this weekend. two teens stood outside stores and asked people if they would buy them beer. most said no but one person was arrested and three in richmond for agreeing to make the buy. >> i mean, look, i made a

mistake. >> we have the man over here, decoy approached him, asked him to purchase alcohol for him, the man went inside, purchased beer. >> this was a statewide operation. 109 agencies participated. 536 arrests were made statewide. more than 100 were made in the bay area. the chp says it will be keeping a eye out for drunk drivers on this st. patrick's day. last year on st. patrick's day the chp made 430 arrests. that is a 28% increase from 2012. the chp advises people to think ahead. >> if you are planning to go out, very important that you plan ahead. make sure you have a designated driver, and it is a person that is not drinking.

okay? does not drink at all. >> officers say if you don't have a designated driver take a cab and if you see someone driving drunk call the chp. the coast guard posted a drop today. you can see one member of the crew lowering himself with a rope. there were two women and two men in a boat that ran aground because of engine failure. they were brought back to the air field in good condition. the protests turned violent but students at city college of san francisco said it wasn't their fault. what they are saying today. >> taking home a piece of local history, the way they are bidding farewell a day after they served their last burger. >> a cool down today. 15 degrees in some neighborhoods. temperatures are coming back. how warm will it be for your

city college of san francisco is underscrutiny in the wake of a violent protest last thursday. ktvu's david stevenson is on campus with more on what could happen next. >> the meeting today began at 4:00 p.m. students last week were pepper sprayed and a number were arrested during thursday's ocpassion of the hall. they say a payment policy requiring students to pay fees in full discriminates against low income people. six police police officers received minor injuries.

students met this afternoon, we learned about the school's planned response to the violence and spoke to one of the students about his injuries from thursday afternoon. >> they told me i may be in danger of having two fractured wrists. that is not confirmed. i need a better x-ray. >> there will be a review from an outside agency. there will be an internal review. we have a campus crisis management team looking at all the facts. >> reporter: we are told the challengeler of city college of san francisco plans forums. we were escorted from the meeting as it began but we were told they are concerned about student safety and student rights in the wake of what happened and they want violence to come to an end. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. the city of antioch is looking to revitalize downtown.

city leaders applied for a $493,000 state grant to come up with a long term plan for the struggling river down district. many store fronts have for rent signs on them but they hope that changes. a teary eyed day for fans and customers of joe's able car restaurant. people -- cable car restaurant. people returned to bid on the some of the items inside. the owner and his staff served their last meals last nights after 49 years in business and today he was fighting back tears himself. >> really emotionally hard.
