"mornings on 2" begins right now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." we're following developing news out of san jose. these are live pictures where police are investigating the city's ninth homicide of the years. it's still an active scene in this neighborhood near blossom hill road and highway 101. coming up in two minutes, brian flores tells us what neighbors heard just before police arrived odd the scene. it's tuesday, march 18th. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. how does it look, steve? >> clear and cold. a lot of 30s from lake county all the way down to santa clara. santa clara valley. we have a few high clouds to

the north. that's it. temperatures, 30s on the coast. half moon bay, moss landing flirting with some 30s. it will be sunny and highs. 60s, upper 60s. san jose fits the fill. 71. 44 to start, though. there are a lot another 40s. there's still a couple of locations. napa valley had a northerly breeze. some of the higher elevations. it's been cut in half compared to yesterday. 52 your morning trifecta. livermore, half moon bay 39. santa rosa, same up here. napa airport 49. they have a hint of a northerly breeze. overall, except for the clouds up towards reno and north of tahoe and truckee, looks like flirting around carson city. nice weather on the way. there will be a lot of sunshine. top to bottom. everyone in on the sunshine. 60s, upper 60s, a few low 70s. >> we do have a couple of problems on the commute. one getting to the san

francisco airport. that would be southbound 101 at millbrae avenue. this crash has been blocking three lanes for a time and traffic is backed up into south san francisco. this is bad news if you are trying to catch a flight. you know how rushed you can be. you have to go through security and please give yourself extra time. chp thinks they can open things up very soon. 280 is an alternate. get across the bridge, westbound 92 there is a report of a crash between hesperian. trying to find a better location for it. however, traffic will be busy as you approach the san mateo bridge. let's go to live pictures now. i want to show you that northbound 280 coming up on 17 is already slowing down. so is 85 coming up on 17 and 101 on 880. right now we're getting the first spots of stop-and-go traffic in the valley as you drive toward cupertino and sunnyvale. the bridge, that's a 25 to 30- minute drive time with most of

that waiting at the toll plaza back to the desk. breaking news out of alameda county. a castro valley man wanted for the shooting death of his wife surrenders to the alameda county sheriff's department overnight. ktvu channel 2 reporter, tara moriarty, is at santa rita jail in dublin and says police received another key piece of evidence and that would be the man's vehicle. good morning, tara. >> reporter: that's right. the alameda county sheriff's office tweeted out that their prime suspect feng mi turned himself in last night. we believe he's being booked here. the opinion manhunt for him began after his wife's body was found in the family home friday afternoon in castro valley. the couple's 14-year-old daughter is the one who found 46-year-old yunyi zhang. suspicion turned to feng mi because he vanished after the filling and made no attempt to contact his daughters.

evidence also linked him to the killing. they've located the silver rav4 with with paper plates he was believed to be driving. investigators responded to the family home three times in 2009 on domestic violence calls. right now we're waiting to hear what fekmy is being charged with -- feng mi is being charged the -- charged with. we'll let you know what we find out. >> we're following develops news in south san jose. police are investigating what they call a suspicious death. brian flores is live at the scene. police are trying to figure out whether marijuana plants might be connected to the crime. >> they are still trying to figure that out. they are still continuing to gather evidence as you can see right now. we're on the 5000 block of eppling lane here in south san jose. still trying to gather more details. police say they first got a 911

call of shots being fired here around 9:39 last night. when they arrived, they found a young man in his 20s who had been shot once and he was pronounced dead at the scene. this morning, we don't know what led up to the shooting if there was an argument or fight. but what investigators did find inside the home were several marijuana pot plants. they didn't say whether this was a growhouse. it's also unclear if there's a connection between the hot plants and shooting as well. several police cruisers are here. a crime scene van is here gathering evidence. police will be here for some time. homicide investigators arrived on scene, taking away items such as computer hard drives. this is san jose's ninth homicide of the year. we have several calls in about this. we've not heard back this morning. we're live in south san jose, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:06. new this morning, the

investigation is underway into a suspicious early-morning fire at a neighborhood market in  oakland. it started shortly before 3:00 this morning at the market on macarthur boulevard near 82nd avenue. there were actually two fires, one at the front of the market. the other in the back and that is raising red flags among investigators at the fire scene. >> not only having fired two distinct locations but a locked up building where we had to force entry. that's rare that the fire began at two separate locations inside a secured building. >> faves kept the flames from -- firefighters kept the flames from spreading to other buildings. a fire at an abandoned building an mare island started this morning. several people were inside when firefighters arrived. no one was hurt. crews were able to quickly put

out the flames. a suspect now in custody accused in the deadly hit-and- run crash in concord that killed a mother of four adult children. now, police arrested 29-year- old tyler larson last night. investigators say he's the driver of the pickup truck that veered off willow pass road sunday night jumped the sidewalk and killed the woman. concord police say they got a tip from the chp late yesterday. that led them to the suspect and his chevy silverado pickup truck in antioch. >> we caught a lucky break. fortunately, the chp gave us lead. they had contact with a similar vehicle which turned out to be the vehicle we were looking for. >> 46-year-old yolanda was killed in sunday night's crash. the 46-year-old woman was living on the street while sometimes staying with friends. ktvu obtained this surveillance video of her pushing a shopping cart moments before she was killed on willow pass road. the man accused of trying

to run over two san francisco police officers is due back in court in just a few hours. jeffrey ruano is scheduled to be formally charged with several felony counts tied to the incident ten days ago in the mission district. investigators say he tried to back his car into two officers. officer adam shaw was shot in the arm during that incident. but san francisco police say it's possible shaw's partner may have accidentally wounded him during the chaos. ruano's attorney says his client is being used as the fall guy in this case. opening steaums are scheduled in the trial -- statements are scheduled in the trial of a man accused of shooting and killing two people on fisherman's wharf. they say the man owned a store and killed two others he saw as rivals. another recall is linked to a petaluma slaughterhouse that's accused of selling beef

from cows that have cancer. the company, crave jerky, is recalling its garlic chili pepper flavor beef jerkry -- jerky. the recall recalls those with the number 18951. health officials say the beef jerky may contain product from the rancho feeding corporation. they recalled almost 9 million pounds of meat products. crave jerky says so far no reports of customers getting sick. fast-food workers around the country will protest saying they are not being paid for all of the hours they work. demonstrations are planned in oakland and about 30 other cities. now, in oakland, workers will gather at 11:30 at the mcdonald's at 12th street and 25th avenue. the rallies come just days after workers here in california and two other states sued mcdonald's. they say the restaurants remove hours from their time sheets

and don't let them take all of their breaks. a businessman has abandoned a plan to ask voters to raise the minimum wage to $12. he said his plan would boot the economy and allow -- boost the economy. but he wasn't able to raise enough money to get that measure on the ballot. 7:11. a proposed measure to repeal california's ban on affirmative action at public colleges at universities will not be on the november ballot. the measure sought to overturn part proposition 209 which bans school from using race and ethnicity as a factor in the admissions process. but democratic lawmakers have abandoned their effort to repeal the ban. that's after three asian- american state senators, including leland yee from san francisco, pulled their support. 7:11. san francisco officials are overhauling the graffiti

sometime coming up on 7:15. our continuing coverage of the missing malaysian flight. the new york times is saying the abrupt turn the plane made was programmed into the on- flight computer system by someone in the cookty pit. experts say whoever changed the flight path typed seven or eight key strokes into the cockpit computer. they say it's something pilots do to avoid bad weather or congested airspace at a news conference, malaysian authorities said the search area continues to expand.

backing a plan to build a new waterfront baseball stadium for the oakland as on the site of an abandoned terminal. that's according to the mercury news. next week, the port collision will approve joining the negotiations with a group that wants to lay the groundwork for a proposed stadium at howard terminal. the group is not deterred by the lack of enthusiasm by oakland as co-owner lew wolff for this plan. he said the terminal north of jack london square is too far away from b.a.r.t. and would cost too much money for an environmental cleanup. palo alto city employees are getting a raise. according to the daily news, the city council reached a deal with a 4.5% pay raise. the deal shifts some of the risk of rising healthcare premiums from the city over to the employees. that agreement is expected to cost the city about 7.6 million. this is the first raise for palo alto city employees since

2008. 7:18. want to check in with sal and say welcome back to sal and how is the traffic going. it's going okay for the most part, tori, and dave. we've had a commute that's been just moderate. unfortunately, now we're finding out about a very serious crash. this one is just into the newsroom. it's a deadly crash. i think i spelled silverado soon. let me get rid of that. silverado trail at trancas. in fact, the trail is completely blocked at trancas. the fire department has told us one person has died. and they will shut down the trail. napa police and chp are handling this incident. please give yourself extra time and go around if you are driving in this area. let's go to some live pictures. the traffic here at the bay bridge toll plaza, that is going to be backed up for about a 20-minute drive time.

20 minutes before -- as you get into san francisco. most of that time is spent waiting at the toll plaza. i also want to mention that northbound 280, i was talking to a gentleman, the other day, when you see northbound 280 backed up into downtown san jose, you know it's gonna be bad all the way to cupertino. 85 is slow to 87 all the way up. 101 will be slow from capitol expressway in pockets. we have a slow going in the south bay on this tuesday, very busy day in santa clara valley. 7:20. let's go to steve. a very good morning. sunrise over the building city. it's cold this morning. bev just spent me -- 36 in danville. i know we had 37 by anderson reservoir and morgan hill and 35 up in lakeport. there are cold readings. carrie said her heater kicked in this morning. there you go. it's clear as a bell out there unless you are watching us up in reno where they have high

what's app user data are irresponsible. the ceo says what's app does not even collect basic information such as birthdays or e-mails. he claims the acquisition by facebook will not compromise any of the values the company has already established. the national sugars in tequila could be good for your health. tequila is made from the blue agave plants. mexican researchers say the natural sugars derived from that plant said mice who drink water sweetened with that sugar showed a reduction in weight and blood glucose levels. researchers belief the ingredients should be used for alternatives for people. dramatic video shows a man nearly getting hit by a bullet train on the peninsula.

the airport. if you are trying to catch a flight at sfo, you need to give yourself extra time. it feels terrible to miss a flight. just -- urknow get on the road as -- you know, get on the road as early as possible getting to the san francisco airport. i want to go to napa. there is a deadly crash on silverado trail at trancas. that road is closed. it was a head-on collision with major damage to the vehicle. one person has been confirmed killed in the crash. and the coroner is on the way. this is gonna be a big deal for the next few hours as they do the investigation. in the south bay, we have slow traffic on 280, 85 and 101. 280 is improving. 85 is not. and neither is 101. it's pretty heavy all over the santa clara valley. bay bridge about a 30-minute drive time into san francisco. most of that time waiting at the toll plaza and then if you are driving on the richmond/san rafael bridge approach. it's backing up getting to the toll plaza and all of the lanes even the fastrack lane.

the only lane that's clear is the carpool lane. back to the desk. caltrain is sharing some dramatic video of a man who had a frightening close call with the train as he ran across the tracks right at the redwood city station. janine de la vega is at that station in morning. you've even witnessed some of this basically life-threatening behavior, right? >> reporter: yeah, we have. there's so many warning signs here telling people into the to do this. but we've seen -- not to do this. but we've seen people come and walk across the tracks when the gates are down. a train is coming. they don't seem to care and they don't want to talk to us about what they took the risk. the man you are about to see in this video is lucky. you can hear the warning sirens that a train is coming in the background. several people scurry across

the tracks. just as a train approaches, a man walks across narrowly getting hit. caltrain is highlighting this close call to prove to people that it's just not worth it. we captured several people doing the same thing this morning. in the same place, ignoring the warning gates to beat the train. we asked riders about taking the risk. >> i'm kind of a goodie two shoes about that thing. partly because i think -- even if you do it and get by with it, other people see you getting by with it. they take risks that maybe they shouldn't as well. >> reporter: so far, three people have been hit and killed by caltrain this year. it's not only devastating for the victims he's loved ones but for the train operators who can't stop in time. the transportation agency is reminding people to never go around the gates. pay attention near the tracks. watch out for a second train and to expect a train on any

track at any time. as i mentioned before, there are plenty of warning signs. you are looking at one of them. it shows that it's going to cost you $271. that's the fine if you are caught actually crossing the tracks illegally. there are security people who do ticket and do enforce that but they can't catch everybody. but again, a gad reminder from -- good reminder from caltrain. reporting live from redwood city, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:36. the investigation into a deadly hit-and-run crash on a busy oakland freeway earlier this month has taken a trainge turn. ktvu news learned the driver killed in the crash was chasing down a car thief and we have exclusive surveillance video of that car theft in progress in san leandro. you can see the thief in a hooded sweatshirt right there getting into an unlocked honda and driving away. the owner of the stolen car and his friend, then get into a

minivan to chase the chief. the two cars collide on interstate 880 near the oakland coliseum. >> we're very thankful that surveillance video did come forward. it will be huge for our investigation. >> the man trying to help his friend get back his stolen car was killed in the crash. his friend was seriously injured. the car thief ran away from the crash scene and is still on the loose. >> homicide detectives in campbell are still trying to determine what sparked a deadly confrontation at a city park sunday night. a homeless man is accused in the fatal stabbing of 16-year- old ivan diaz a junior at boynton high school. yesterday, the suspect gave an interview to janine de la vega. todd tharp said he only used his knife as a last resort when diaz and several other teenagers jumped him. >> i was getting hit in the head, kicked in the head. i was definitely worried about

my own safety. >> i would like to know how everything started. why -- what reasons did the guy have to stab my brother. >> reporter: investigators are looking into tharp's claim of self-defense and he's expected to appear in court. mountain view firefighters say a house fire over the weekend was deliberately set. whoever set the fire also store a car, an audi. the homeowners were not home at the time. investigators are now looking for a blit blue 2003 audi, 5 hjm 491 is the license plate number. if you have any information, call police. an outside agency now investigating a violent confrontation last night between students and police at city college of san francisco. now, on thursday, students

clashed with police officers after they occupied conlon hall. during the clash, some students were pepper sprayed and arrested. as the investigation continues, the chancellor is planning several community forums. a cal football player is one of four plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit. it is accusing the ncaa of operating as an unful cartel making billions of dollars off the players. this lawsuit games college football and basketball players should be able to get some of the money they make for their schools. the lawsuit also targets specific conferences like the sec,acc, pac 12 and the big 12. another huge lottery jackpot is up for grabs

islamic extremists in sirahia -- sirria. he appeared yesterday in a seattle courtroom and agreed to be returned to sacramento to face charges. he's a student at san joaquin delta college in stockton. he enrolled as a trainee with the national guard but never entered basically training because he lacked the minimum qualifications. federal drug agents searched two northern california costco stores. it's part of an investigation into powerful painkillers. investigators believe the costco stores in roseville and pairfield may have several record-keeping violations for hydrocodone which is a very highly addictive painkiller. last month, dea agents looked into four cvs pharmacies and said 40,000 hydrocodone pills are unaccounted for. walmart wants to get into the used video game business. it is offering it's own store gift cards in exchange for old

his wife's body was found at the family home friday afternoon in tas troe valley. the couple's daughter is the one who found 46-year-old yunyi zhang shot to death. suspicion turned to feng mi because he vanished after the kill killing and made no attempt to -- after the killing and made no attempt to contact his daughters. deputies say feng mi has twofer registered firearms one was found inside the home. we're not sure if deputies recovered the other weapon. but investigators say they responded to the family's home three times, in 2009 on domestic violence calls. lately, neighbors say that it had been quiet. we have put in a call to the alameda county sheriff's office to find out exactly what charges mi faces. we're told his daughters are in a safe place. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. we're also following developing news out of south san jose. police investigating that city's ninth homicide of the year. brian flores is live at the

scene. police are trying to figure out whether marijuana plants may be connected to the crime. brian? >> reporter: hi, dave. good morning. that's the big question this morning. as you can see, we're live here on the 5000 block of eppling lane. several cruisers are here. you see a crime scene haven't as well. they are trying to get that question answered as well as gathering evidence this morning from the city's latest homicide. we've seen officers and detectives coming in and out of the home all morning long as we go to video now, we've seen some carrying bags of evidence. we've seen police examining a car in front of the driveway where this happened as well. here's what we know -- police say they first got a 911 call of shots being fired on eppling lane 9:39 last night. when they arrived, they found a young man in his 20s who had been shot once. he was pronounced dead at the scene. we don't know what led up to the shooting, if there was an argument or fight. what investigators did find when they went inside the home

were several marijuana plants but they are coming short and saying this was a freehouse -- growhouse. there with reports that there was another person in the house that may have called 911 at the time. we've not been able to confirm that. still a lot of questions. one of them is whether there is a connection between the marijuana found inside as well as the shooting. as we take it back out here live, again, the victim's name has not been released as they try to notify next of kin and there are no suspects taken into custody as well. as we mentioned, this is the city's ninth homicide of the year. we're live in south san jose, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. new this morning, the investigation is underway into a suspicious early-morning fire at a neighborhood market in oakland. it started shortly before 3:00 this morning at the market on macarthur boulevard near 82nd avenue. there were actually two fires, one at the front of the market. the other in the back. and that has raised red flags

among investigators. >> not only having two fires but having the entire building contained, logged up, secure where we had to force entry. that in itself is rare that the fires would begin at two separate locations inside a secure building. >> fire crews kept the flames from spreading to other buildings and no one was hurt. investigators in vallejo are trying to determine the cause of an early-morning fire at an abandoned u.s. navy building. it started around 12:30 this morning on mare island way. firefighters say several homeless people were inside the boarded up building when's rived on the -- when they arrived on the scene. no one was hurt. crews were able to quickly put out the flames. a suspect in custody accused in the deadly hit-and- run crash in concord that killed a mother of four grown children. last night, police arrested 29- year-old tyler larsen. investigators say he's the driver of the pickup truck that villed -- veered off willow pass road, jumped the sidewalk

and killed the bomb. concord police got a tip from the chp that led them to the suspect in his chevy pickup in antioch. >> we caught a lublgy break. fortunately chp gave us some lead. evidently they had contact with a similar vehicle which turned out to be the vehicle we were looking for. >> 46-year-old yolanda was killed in sunday night's crash. the 46-year-old woman had been living on the street while sometimes staying with friends. now, ktvu obtained this surveillance video of her pushing a shopping cart. this was just moments before she was killed on willow pass road. 8:07. the man accused of trying to run over two san francisco police officers is due back in court in about one hour. jeffrey ruano is scheduled to be formally charged with several felony counts tied to the incident ten days ago in the mission district. investigators say he tried to back his car into two officers.

officer adam shaw was shot in the arm during that incident. but san francisco police say it's possible shaw's partner may have accidentally wounded him during the chaos. ruano's attorney says his client is being used as a fall by in this case. opening statements are scheduled this morning in the trial of a man accused of shooting and killing two people on fisherman's wharf in 2011. prosecutors say the man owned a store at the wharf and killed two people in another store he believed were rivals. he's charged with two counts of murder and a firearm enhancement. 8:08. another recall is linked to a petaluma slaughterhouse. it's accused of selling beef from cows that had cancer. the company crave jerky is recalling its garlic chili pepper flavored beef jerky. it sold at many different stores. but the recall involves those packages with a number of

into its flight was programmed into the on-flight computer system by someone in the cockpit. aviation experts say whoever changed the flight path typed seven or eight key strokes into the cockpit computer. they say it's usually something pilots do to avoid bad weather or congested airspace. at a news conference earlier this morning, malaysian authorities said the search area continues to expand. >> the entire such area is now 2.24 million square nautical miles. this is an enormous search area. >> thailand's military says its aidar detected a plane on a twissing flight path that may have been 370 minutes after the communications system went down. but it did not share that information with malaysia sooner because it was not specifically asked for it.

this morning, vladimir putin signed a treaty to make crimea a part of russia. he signed the treaty with crimean leaders in moscow. the agreement has to be rat tied by russia's parly minute to take -- parliament to take effect. president obama said in the people's hearts crimea has california has met a major milestone for its healthcare exchange and with time to spare. the state was aiming to get 1 million users signed up through the covered california health exchange by the end of this month. well, it hit that number with two weeks to spare. now california is on track to surpass its goals, one of the few states in the country that's likely to do that. 8:16. new reports this morning that the port of oakland is backing a plan to build a new water baseball stadium for the oakland as on the site of an abandoned shipping terminal. that's according to the mercury

news. next week, the port commission reportedly will approve joining the negotiations with a group that wants to lay the groundwork for the proposed stadium at howard terminal. the group is not deterred by the lack of enthusiasm coming from lew wolff. he's said that howard terminal north of jack london square is too far away from b.a.r.t. and it would cost too much money for an environmental cleanup. palo alto city employees are getting a raise according to the peninsula daily news, the city council reached a deal with its largest union for a 4.5% pay raise. the deal also shifts some of the costs of rising healthcare premiums from the city to employees. the agreement is expected to cost the city about 7.6 million. this is the first raise for palo alto city employees, though, since 2008. 8:17. let's check in with sal. you are watching the south bay

and everything else. how is it going? >> well, it's not good although we have seen improvement. we're gonna start off at the 280/880 interchange. take a look at the traffic. it's beginning to move a little bit better now. we had a rough period there. it's about 7:30. things are getting a little bit better as we speak. i do want to mention the traffic is going to be slow on 85 still from 87. so that commute has not gotten better. i would still say that 280 is most likely the best freeway to take. let's go to another picture. this would be the bay bridge. now, the actual toll plaza delay, if you start counting from there. it's about a 35 to 45-minute driferent time. the problem -- drive time. all of the prob approaches are slow -- all of the approaches are slow. 580 is still pretty slow getting into dublin out of livermore. there was an earlier crash there. and then castro valley, approach is slow and so is the nimitz freeway.

8:23. once again we're following breaking news out of seattle. this is new video from near the space needle where komo tv news's helicopter has just crashed of the seattle fire department is reporting that two people are dead. we're also learning the chopper was coming in for a landing when it may have hit the side of the building and went down. landed on several cars. witnesses say the chopper and cars all exploded into flames as you can see from this video. people in the area reported seeing a huge cloud of smoke as firefighters and police responded. once again, a newschopper has crashed near the space needle in seattle. the fire department there says two people are killed. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you updates as we get them. more than 500 people were arrested after a statewide operation targeting adults who buy alcohol for minors. over the weekend, police

welcome back. 8:30. good morning. we're following new developments. the latest developments, breaking news from seattle. these are live pictures, a news helicopter from komo tv in seattle has crashed near the seattle space needle. an incredible scene you are looking at right now. there are reports that the news helicopter was coming in for a landing on the roof of the tv station when it apparently hit the side of the building and then went down. you can see the crash scene. it hit several cars on the street below. the helicopter and those cars exploded into the flames you are seeing here.

we're getting reports at least two people are dead. at least one person was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. obviously, this is a fluid situation. information still coming in. a tv news helicopter crashing in seattle near the seattle space needle. we'll get to all of the details as soon as we get it in. tuesday morning. march 18th. i'm dave clark. we'll tell you what's happening here. steve is right there. >> temperatures are cool. they will rebound. san francisco will be 65 degrees. a lot of these are near average for this time of year. sunshine, don't have to worry about high clouds. that's for sure. it looks like the morning lows will be cool and the highs will be in the upper 60s and low 70s probably for a while. there is a breeze for some, especially out to the valley, some of the higher elevations. everybody will be in on the

sunshine. cool morning or cold. sunshine, wall to wall heerl. 60s, 70s, a couple of mid-70s. low 70s inland. here's sal. >> all right. we are watching traffic improve in some areas and not do so well in others. first we'll go to 880 northbound. i told you this traffic usually starts to get worse after 8:30. it's almost like clock work. we're also looking at traffic at the bay bridge. this commute here is backed up for about a 30-minute delay. so we're starting to count only for the macarthur maze which is good. some of the other approaches have cleared up. if you are driving in the carpool lane or the fast track outside lanes, i think you will be doing even better than that. we've had some slow traffic on 880 south coming down -- south as you come down through san leandro. westbound 580 is also slow and southbound 880 as you drive down to fremont, still very, very slow. i want to mention the peninsula

approach on 101 to the airport is very slow because of earlier issues. 8:32. back to the desk. >> thank you. caltrain is sharing some really dramatic video of a man who had a frightening close call with a train after he ran across the tracks at the redwood city station. ktvu's janine de la vega is at the station this morning and janine, you've seen with our own eyes some of this risky behavior. yes, we certainly have, dave. there's numerous safety measures in place here. they have this yellow line here on the platform telling people not to cross it. there's also different signs telling people not to cross the tracks when those warning gates are down. but all of this gets ignored frequently. and what you are about to see is a frightening example of that. in redwood city. but several people still scurry across the tracks just as the bullet train approaches, a man runs across nearly getting hit. this was posted on caltrans train's blog called peninsulamove. caltrans is highlighting this to prove it's not worth it. we spoke to people who witnessed others trying to beat the train. >> i saw a group of boys some of them dared to go across and a straggler was trying to catch up and he cut it way, way too close. >> reporter: here's video we captured this morning showing three people crossing the tracks illegally while the crossing gates are down. and a train is come requesting forwards them -- coming towards them. throughout the morning, we saw more people do the same thing. we asked commuters if they think the video caltrain posted will make a difference. >> in the short term, yes. in the long-term, no. [laughter] >> i mean, people forget very

quickly when there's a tragedy. and there's too many of them. >> reporter: so far, three people have been hit and killed by caltrains this year. it's not only devastating for the victims' loved ones for but for the train operators who can't stop in sign. there will be signs posting the fine is $271 for crossing illegally and there are sheriff's cutes who are here at the various stations. they are the ones that hand out the tickets. but they are not able to always catch everyone. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the investigation into a deadly hit-and-run crash on a busy oakland freeway earlier this month has taken a strange turn. ktvu news has learned the driver killed in the crash was chasing down a car thief and we have exclusive surveillance video of that car theft in progress in san leandro. you can see the thief highlighted here in a hooded sweatshirt getting into an

unlocked black honda and then driving away. the owner of the stolen car and his friend then get in a minivan to chase the thief. the two cars collide on interstate 880 near the oakland coliseum. >> we're very thankful that surveillance video came forward. it will be huge for our investigation. >> the man trying to help his friend get back his stolen car was killed in the crash. his friend was seriously injured. the car thief ran away from the crash scene and is still on the loose. >> 8:36. homicide detectives in campbell still trying to determine what sparked a deadly confrontation at a city park sunday night. now, a homeless man is accused in the fatal stabbing of ivan diaz. he's a junior at boynton high school. yesterday, the suspect gave a jailhouse interview to our reporter. todd tharp said he only used his knife as a last resort when diaz and several other teens

jumped him. >> i was getting kicked and hit in the head with a bottle. i was definitely worried about myself, you know, my own safety. >> i would like to know how everything started. why, what reasons did the guy have to stab my brother. >> investigators are looking into tharp's claim of self- defense. they are expected to present their findings when he appears in court tomorrow. three california high school students and a 76-year- old man are being credited for rescuing two women from their burning home. the fire started yesterday morning on scarboro place in san ramon. neighbors heard loud booms and saw flames shooting from the home. one man came to help. three teens driving in the neighborhood also jumped out to help. a 94-year-old woman and her daughter were inside. the elderly woman is still in the hospital this morning recovering from burns. firefighters are still trying to figure out how the fire

started. 8:37. an outside agency now investigating last week's violent confrontation between students and the police at city college of san francisco. now, on thursday, students clashed with the officers after they occupied conlon hall. protesters were demanding the removal of a special trustee and protesting a policy that required students to pay their fees in full. during this fight, some of the students were pepper sprayed and arrested. the chancellor of ccsf is also planning several community forums. a cal football player is one of the plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit accusing the ncaa of operating as an unlawful cartel, making billions of dollars off the labor of players. the suit claims college football and basketball players should be able to get some of the money they make for the schools. the lawsuit also targets specific conferences like the sec, acc, pac 1, big 10, and

recover the suv that they believe that feng mi was driving. now, authorities named him a suspect saturday, one day after his wife 's bod body was found. at the home. suspicion turned to feng mi because he vanished after his wife's killing and made no attempt to contact his daughters. authorities say evidence inside the home also linked him to his wife's killing. >> mi turned himself into the cal state east bay police department last night around 11:00 p.m. mi has not spoken with investigators and is currently awaiting his arraignment at santa rita jail. it's unknown where mi has been for the last few days or if he's been in contact with anyone. >> reporter: deputies say feng mi has two registered firearms, one was found in the home. deputies say they've not been able to find the other one. investigators say that they responded to the family's home three times in 2009 on domestic violence calls.

but lately it had been quiet according to neighbors. we are told that his daughters, 8 and 14, are in a safe place and in speaking with alameda county sheriff's department, they do say that they wanted to thank the public for really putting this case out there because they believe that is that pressure allowed feng mi to turn himself in. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a stolen bike tonight always make it on the news but an unusual sting operation to catch the thief, that does. ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom now with the actions that one woman and her friends took to get her only mode of transportation back. pam. >> she doesn't have a car. just her $900 bike and b.a.r.t. about a week ago her bike was taken from the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. >> it's actually a thing. like what are you guys doing tonight? >> a typical question for a friend to ask. not a typical request.

a woman asked her friend to help her after she saw her stolen bike on craigslist. she responded to the ad, contacted b.a.r.t. police and then asked her friends to come along to surrender for safety and support. >> we're always watching out for each other. >> yeah. >> we didn't want her to go alone. some were at the bus stop. some were -- i was buying the ticket. >> i saw two friends over there talking to each other. it was all my people lurking in the shadows. >> undercover b.a.r.t. police officers were there as well. they instructed her to touch the wig she was wearing to let them know it was her bike. she did. within seconds, the suspect was surrounded by officers and in handcuffs. at this point, b.a.r.t. is not releasing information about the person arrested as investigators look into whether or not he's part of a larger group. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:48. the federal reserve meeting that gets underway today is the first to be led by new federal

reserve chair janet yellen. yellen said she will hold a news conference after the two- day meeting wraps up. the fed will be discussing if it should continue to wind dune the bond buying program that's helped stimulate the economy. also on the agenda, when the fed might raise interest rates from their near zero levels. a personal trainer from the bay area is filing a lawsuit against crossfit. eight years ago, 34-year-old chloe johnson surgically changed herself from a man to a woman. now she says crossfit will not allow her to compete in the international crossfit games unless she competes against the men. a letter from crossfit's attorneys said a male competitor who has a sex reassignment procedure still has the genetic makeup that gives them an advantage over women. >> i was preshocked that -- pretty shocked that they said i had to register and compete as the gender you were born as.

now, the idea was to temporarily fly the chinese flag in place of the city flag. well, that sparked yesterday's protest by supporters of tibet who say the chinese flag is sa symbol of oppression. and then last night, the protesters went to the city council meeting. one councilmember said the idea to fly foreign flags is about unity and culture. however, the mayor disagrees. >> to do it at city hall is a severe mistake. that no longer becomes a group of people in the community celebrating their culture. it becomes our city government linking itself with the chinese government. >> after many hours of debate, the city council said that this is an issue they can bring up for a vote on a case-by-case basis. however, the mayor says he won't allow any nation's flag other than our own to fly over city hall. people eating dinner in ordinary's downtown disney were rushed from their steets after a giant fishtank cracked open.
