now at noon -- breaking news out of the south bay where crews are just rescued an unconscious person who tumbled off a cliff. the south bay. i'm tampa tampa. a rescue team is bringing a woman who fell from a slif at alum rorke -- cliff at arum rock park to safety. 9news just got these photos about 20 minutes ago as the injured woman was lifted in a chp helicopter. we're told the victim was hiking at eagle rock trail when she fell 25 to 50 feet into the rocky area below. as you can see, this is a steep cliff. rescuers say the woman was unconscious when crews got the call about 90 minutes ago and remained unconscious the entire time. she's being taken by helicopter to regional medical center in san jose. two people died this morning when a news helicopter crashed in seattle. passersby could only watch in moror as the aircraft burned on the street not far from the space needle. it was taken off from the komo

news station. the pilot and photographer were on board. a man in a car below was able to escape the fire and was taken to the hospital. >> and then by the time all of the smoke and everything came up, i had -- i could barely see the guy getting out of his car on fire. literally on fire burning. >> seattle ally mayor spoke in the last hour and said the site will need to be secured for several days as the ntsb is investigating. he also said the space needle is closed at the moment and the monorail may be closed for the rest of the day, maybe longer out of respect to those who lost their lives. we'll have continuing coverage of this developing story at kut.com. you will find photos as well as the latest investigation. new details this noontime about the arrest of a castro valley man in connection with the killing of his wife in

their home last friday. tam is live in castro valley. you've -- tara is live in castro valley. >> reporter: that's right. feng mi was brought here after sun remember denning at the college -- surrendering at the campus. he did not want to speak to investigators. he was taken to the jail where he faces a murder charge. the 46-year-old was named as the prime suspect in his wife's killing. efdisappeared after the bod -- he disappeared after the body of yunyi zhang turned up at the home on friday. the couple's 14-year-old found her shot to death. suspicion turned to me because of evidence -- to mi because of evidence found inside the home. he surrendered to police last night in hayward. >> he just walked in and said i have a warrant. he told them he didn't want to speak to them. when our investigators arrived, he also told them he didn't want to speak to them. we haven't had any

conversations with him about his whereabouts for the last few days. >> reporter: university officials tell us that mi had no connection to the university that they are aware of. they found his silver rav4 with paper plates abandoned close to campus at the hillcrest apartment complex. deputies say feng mi has two registered firearms, one was found inside the home. the others that not been located. investigators say they -- the other has not been located. investigators say there responded to the family home three times in spine -- in 2009 on domestic violence related calls. we're told their daughters are in a safe place. back to you. >> thank you. san jose police are investigating the city's ninth homicide of the year. it happened in the south end of the city on eppling lane. someone called police to say there was a man unconscious in a house there. officers found the man in his late 20s or 30s dead with at least one gunshot wound. police wouldn't say who found

the man. >> but somebody did come into the residence locate the male and called 911. >> any witnesses? anyone one running out with a gun? >> don't have the information. >> officers found a number of marijuana plants inside but would not say this is a growhouse. they are withholding the man's name until they notify his name. dramatic video from cal train shows several people making a dash to cross a train. janine explains why the agency wanted the public to see this tape. >> reporter: in the this youtube video, you see people scurry across the railroad trucks in redwood city. never mind the warning signs are blaring. this man barely makes it across. >> when we saw that video, it was frightening to us. but it was a very good example of what not to do and why not to do it. >> reporter: cal train posted the video on the blob as part

of a campaign to look, listen and live. the agency says oftentimes people think oftentimes after one train crosses, it's safe to cross but they don't realize a second train is coming which is what happened in the video. >> have you ever tried? >> no, i avoid it. what's ten seconds? >> reporter: the wearning gates were down and the lights were flashing, these three people crossed illegally. one man got trapped behind the gate. >> what goes true your mind, it's not a bright thing to do. >> it's dangerous. it's dangerous is the point. we need grate separation. a tunnel over it or a walk over the top. >> reporter: cal train officials agree but say that's an expensive prop six. it's done -- proch sigs. proposition. there are signs warning people if they cross the tracks while the gate is downed, they will be fined -- down, they will be

fined $271. sheriff deputies are handing out tickets but they can't catch everyone. back to you. it will be some time before an oakland market can reopen after a suspicious ernl fire-- early-morning fire. the fire broke out inside the in and out market on macarthur boulevard near 82nd avenue. the building was locked up side. but inside firefighters found two separate cars. that's why firefighters suspect arson. >> they discovered a fire on the right side and as it continued to extend and look for more fire, they found fire in the rear building. >> fire crews kept the fire from spreading to any other buildings. no one was hurt. but the store sustained about $100,000 in damage to the structure and merchandise. a fire inspector will be looking for arson signs, including forced entry and the use of accelerants. fire officials in vallejo

are investigating an early- morning fire at an abandoned u.s. navy building. the fire broke out at 12:30 this morning in a building on mare island. the crews broke in and found five homeless people inside. they say another seven homeless people had fled the scene. about 10% of the building was destroyed but in one was injured. an oakland elementary school is closed for the day as east bay mud works to repair a difficult water main break. the break occurred at 11:00 at 45th street. crews dug eight feet down to find the 12-inch main. 28 customers are affected, including emmerson elementary which canceled classes for the day as well as homes in the neighborhood. crews say it's slow going because they have to contend to underwire electrical lines. we'll have an update on the situation during the news at

5:00 this evening. now to our continuing coverage of missing malaysia airlines flight 370. the new york times reports that the abrupt turn the plane made from its flight path was programmed into the onflight computer system by someone in the cockpit. aviation experts say whoever changed the flight path had to type seven or eight key strokes into the cockpit computer. they say it's usually something pilots do to avoid bad weather or congested airspace. at a news conference earlier this morning, malaysian authorities say the search area continues to expand. >> the entire search area is now 2.24 million square nautical miles. this is a huge search area. >> meanwhile, thailand's military recently revealed its radar detected a plane on a twisting flight path that may have been flight 370. that was just minutes after the

jetliner's communications went down. the thai military said it didn't send the information with malaysia sooner because it was not specifically asked for it. today, vladimir putin signed a treaty to make crimea a part of russia. president putin signed the treaty with leaders in moscow. the agreement still has to be ratified by russia's parliament to take effect. earlier this morning, he gave a televised address saying in the people's hearts, crimea has always been a part of russia. this comes as vo biden arrived in poland to show u.s. resolve against russia's intervention in ukraine and as president obama invites u.s. allies to a meeting next week in europe to discuss further action in response to russia's involvement in ukraine. now that i think about it, it was crazy. i can't believe i really even did that. three east bay teens are being

there is a new heroic twist to this house fire we first told you about on yesterday's noon news. three teens from california high school are being called heroes for saving a 94-year-old woman and her daughter. ktvu's sal castanedo is live in san ramon and just spoke to the teens about why they ran into that burning house. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: good afternoon. this is the high school. this is california high school. and this is where the three students go to school. here on campus, word is getting out about the heroic behavior. the three students, as you mentioned, help rescue a 94- year-old woman, her 75-year-old daughter, and a dog from this burning home in san ramon, as you saw yesterday on the noon news. the students say when they noticed the smoke, they drove up to see what was burning. they learned someone was still inside. another neighbor was already in the burning home and asked for the boys' help getting out the

elderly lady. the students say they acted without too much thought and didn't have time to be scared. >> i wasn't necessarily thinking about it in the moment. it was -- now that i think about it, it was crazy. i can't believe i did that. but just in the moment, it was instinct. >> we all were talking about it after and like this morning, too. literally like a movie. it was just like -- i never seen a fire like that ever. i had seen campfires. i had never seen a fire like that in my life. when we walked into the side, i saw the house burning and all of the black smoke. i was just -- i was like wow. >> reporter: the three students are peter, gowin, and one other student. all seniors. the principal is very proud of the students. >> exceptionally proud that the

three young men would reach out and do something like that because they could have easily kept walking but they saw smoke so they moved towards where the fire was and ultimately saved somebody. >> reporter: the woman rescued is recovering in a san francisco hospital. she's in the burn unit. she's the 94-year-old woman. another woman was rescued. she's the 71-year-old daughter. she escape id with minor injuries. a dog was also saved and the tleet students involved -- three students involved are back at school at california high school in san ramon. sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, sal. san leandro's mayor says i will not support a proposal to fly the flag of another country over city hall. the idea was to temporarily fly the chinese flag in place of the city flag. that sparked yesterday's protest of supporters of tibet who say the chinese flag is a signal of oppression. last night the protesters went to the city council meeting.

one councilman says the idea to fly foreign flags is about unity and culture. but the mayor disagrees. >> to do it at city hall is a severe mistake. that no longer becomes a group of people celebrating the culture. it becomes our city government linking itself with the chinese government. >> reporter: after hours of debate, the city council said this is an issue they can bring up for a vote on a case-by-case basis but the mayor says he will not allow any nation's flag other than our own to fly above city hall. people are buying up megamillion tickets today as the multi-state lottery game hosts its third largest jackpot ever. many lined up hoping to win the $400 million prize. the odds are against them, though. 1 in 259 million. but that doesn't keep some people from dreaming. >> if i win, i'm gonna travel. i'm gonna buy houses.

i'm gonna put money aside for investments. >> retire. i want to retire. take it easy. go on vacation. that's what i'm hoping for. >> reporter: a megamillions drawing in 2012 yielded the biggest lottery prize in history. $656million. winners in kansas, illinois and maryland split that jackpot. in the meantime last month's powerball jackpot has still gone unclaimed. someone bought the winning ticket at this gas station in milpitas. but no one has stepped forward to claim the $425 million prize. in any case, the gas station owner still gets his million dollars for selling that ticket. outside our doors this afternoon, wall-to-wall sunshine. temperatures are up by several degrees over yesterday's numbers. giving you a look there at a beautiful blue sky over the bay. no advisories inside the bay for today. the winds have lightened up.

we are a little breezy in some areas. first let's take a look at the temperatures, 66 in san jose. 6 degrees warmer than yesterday at this hour, as well as hayward, 67. widespread 60s, concord, and 67 in napa, santa rosa. 63 for half moon bay and along the peninsula, you are included, we've got 61 redwood city, 65 in mountain view. along with the sunny conditions and the warmer temperatures, we continue with the breeze. san jose still reporting 14 miles per hour at the air with gusts to 20. livermore reporting 10 but that gust still to 17 miles an hour and hayward reporting a 15-mile- an-hour breeze with gusts reaching to 21. not as widespread with the winds today. but still you can see the gusts are still out there just a bit. we'll continue to relax as we get into the afternoon. ridge of high pressure continuing to well, strengthen. as it does, those winds are going to calm down. we've got the high pressure in place. you can see sort of how it pushes the flow around that

high pressure and the clouds out of our way. and again we're with mostly sunny skies for your afternoon with subtle changes in the forecast for the next few days. so sunny, nice, mild, lighter winds for today and slightly warmer temperatures, about sums it up. afternoon highs expected in brentwood, 2. 70 for vale. 70 in berkeley. 70 for novato. 64 for pacifica. sliding a little south here we've got temperatures in the low 70s. morgan hill. 72. 73 expected in santa cruz with mostly sunny conditions. the extended forecast here -- mild, dry, nice weather as we end winter and head -- say hello to spring. i was reading my own graphic. spring arrives thursday morning. as we get into the weekend, mostly sunny skies and we're still dry. temperatures ranging in the upper 60s to low 70s which is very quiet weather all the way through the weekend. first sign of some promising

yesterday's gains following encouraging news on the u.s. housing market. applications for permits to build homes rose 7.7% in february. better than analysts had expected. today's comments from vladimir putin has relaxed investors' concerns that tensions over ukraine could escalate. the dow is up 93. the nasdaq up 50 and the s&p up 13. and new federal reserve chair janet yellen is leading her first federal reserve meeting today. she plans to hold a news conference after the two day meeting wraps up. the fed is expected to discuss blferpt to continue to wind down the bond buying program as well as when to raise interest rates from their near zero levels. ktvu is proud to sponsor a first-of-its-kind event coming to the bay area. 16,000 students will fill oracle arena next week to hear celebrity speeches and performances. it's called we day. you can't buy tickets.
