staffing of the police department is already generating strong emotions. >> reporter: public safety is the top concern according to a survey. people attending a meeting with the police union today are not reacting well to police department numbers showing a drop in officers. >> we are on a downward cycle. too many accidents, robberies, stabbings. >> ktvu saw the documents that show there are 904 actual officers but that number will fall to 809 by 2016 if the financial picture doesn't change. >> retirement-disability, wages. we need to be more competitive with our benefit package. that would help retention and recruiting. >> the union says the city has been misleading the public. >> the police department is aware that we will be going backwards in numbers.

dana plaza. the crash was so violent a suv was flipped over. police say four of the seven victims are juveniles. they were all wearing seatbelts. six were taken to the hospital. tonight san francisco police are looking for a driver who hit and killed a driver this morning. the victim was walking when she was struck by a truck. the driver did a u-turn and drove off. ktvu's david stevenson is near the scene and says neighbors say something has to be done here. david? >> reporter: police reopened this intersection 2-1/2 hours ago but the hit and run death brought out a lot of emotion about the safety of the crosswalk. >> reporter: police responded at 11:15 p.m. to the intersection. investigators say the driver ran over and killed a woman in the crosswalk and continued 100

feet up the street. >> the driver made a u-turn and drove southbound on bay shore, slowly driving by as he passed the victim. >> the suspect is a hispanic or african american man. police are checking surveillance cameras for clues. cause for concern among law enforcement. >> we have had more vehicles versus pedestrian deaths than homicides in san francisco this year. >> they don't watch. just cross like i am going. >> reporter: neighbors say pedestrians and drivers ignore the dangers here. >> people don't slow down. they don't give you the right of way. >> reporter: they said they did not know the elderly victim but worry about crossing here. >> they don't want this to happen again. it is a community here and a lot of seniors. >> police don't believe the victim was crossing the street

interpreter. a firefighter appeared in court today on drug charges. he was set to enter a plea with the help of a attorney but he is getting a new attorney so the judge postponed the hearing till april 24. he was accused of child abuse but the charges were dropped. developing news now in the search for the missing malaysia airlines flight 370. a massive search is underway in the indian ocean after satellite spotted debry in the open water that could possibly be linked to the jet. the images are being called called called the best lead since it meant missing. it -- it went missing. it was found 1500 miles from australia. we want to show you the image

that lead to the massive search. officials say one of the objects is 24 meters long. that is about 78 feet. that is almost as big as two greyhound buses lined up together. the second object is 5 meters or 16 feet. that is as big as a car. authorities are warning though it is possible these objects, if they are found, will have nothing at all to do with the missing jet. today four military search planes were sent to try to find the objects to see if they are part of the missing flight. the 10 hour search today didn't turn up any signs of the missing jet.
