the altamont pass it's off to a good start. at 4:30 let's go back to the desk. topping our news a bomb was gunned down just blocked from an elementary school. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge sat the richmond police headquarters where investigators do not have a lot to go on. alex. >> reporter, no, they don't. this was the first homicide of the year here in richmond and detectives are hoping that witnesses come forward to help them find the shooter in this case. this killing happened just before 10:00 last night near the intersection of florida avenue and south fourth street. the victim here a woman in her 30s was found lying on the sidewalk. she had been shot several times in the upper body. paramedics tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead here at the scene. officers were in that neighborhood at the time and they heard gunfire but a richmond police lieutenant told me it was the shot spotter detection system that helped them get to this shooting scene

quickly. >> the shot spotter was very critical in that we were able to listen to the shots and gives us an exact pinpoint location on the exact side of the street where the victim was ultimately located. >> reporter: so far this victim has not been identified. it's unclear police say why this woman may have been targeted last night. the best lead though that investigators have to go on witnesses reported seeing a burgundy sedan with gold rims speeding away from that neighborhood shortly after the shooting and police say they do want to talk with the people inside that car and see if they were connected to the killing that happened last night. again a woman found shot to death here in richmond. police still trying to make an arrest. live in richmond alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning fire investigators trying to determine the cause of a fire in san jose early this morning at the eldorado restaurant. firefighters say it started

inside in a back office area of the restaurant just before 2:00 this morning. they were able to contain the fire within just about 20 minutes and there were until injuries -- there were no injuries. a memorial service is being held to mark one of the worst days in the history of the oakland police department. on march 21st, 2009 a wanted parolee shot four oakland police officers. three sergeants died that day. officer john hage passed away a month later. police in san francisco are investigating a shooting near a school. that is right near city college. officers found many shell casings on the ground. they feared the gunman had to run on to the campus but they could not find him. they also searched the area around a nearby whole food

store but nothing turned up there. the victim was wounded in the ankle and is expected to survive. a brush fire in pittsburgh came dangerously close to power lines. at 3:15 yesterday afternoon, firefighters received a call about a burning field near the pittsburgh power generating plant. thick black smoke could be seen as far away as concord and martinez. crews finally contained that fire at 7:00 last night. about 40 acres were burned. >> there was a lot of smoke. so when we drove down the street here, there was fire. a lot of fire. >> reporter: pg&e crews were there to check out the fire to make sure it did not damage any high voltage line. investigators suspect that fire was somehow started by humans either accidentally or deliberately. crews worry that with current drought conditions this fire may signal a very long fire season. new information about a deadly shooting at a marin county campground. sheriffs deputies have arrested 56-year-old ken patrick.

he is accused of killing his house mates 19-year-old lover. it happened in the lawson landing campground in dillon beach. investigators say his 53-year- old house mate did not witness the shooting. the 19-year-old victim had been living with the two men since last summer. now to the continuing coverage of the missing malaysian airlines jet. search crews did not find anything today. five planes were sent to an area in the southern indian ocean where satellite images showed something that could be debris from the missing flight. but even with the food weather today, the planes did not spot anything. the first ship will begin arriving in the search area tomorrow. >> it is the most inaccessible spot as you can imagine on the face of the earth. if there is anything down there, we will find it. we owe it to the family of

those people. >> the fbi is now involved in the investigation into the missing plane. computers from the pilots home and flight simulator are being shipped to the fbi lab in virginia. the fbi will try to retrieve some information that had been deleted from that flight simulator. on our website ktvu.com we have a special section on the search for flight 370 with a timeline of ten other aviation mysteries as well. just look for the link on the front page under hot topics. time is 4:36. san francisco police continue their search for the driver responsible far deadly hit and run in the city's visitation valley neighborhood. investigators sent us this video. it's a white dodge terrain go suv. the suv hit and killed a woman in her 60s when she was walking across the crosswalk.

police say the driver serk led back to look at the victim before speeding away. >> that driver made a u-turn and drove southbound on bay shore. slowly driving by as he passed the victim. >> this was the sixth time this year when a person was killed. despite efforts to hire and keep officers in san jose, the department is expected to take another big hit. if the current trends tonight, the department could lose 100 officers by the year 2016. right now there are about 904 officers on the force. >> the retirement disability issue is one thing, the wage is another. but we need to be more competitive with our benefit package.

not only will it help retention but also recruiting. >> the department says public safety continues to be their top concerns but at a community meeting last night many people say with a decrease in the number of officers on the streets, they don't feel safe. disgraced former san francisco supervisor will be back in the san francisco courtroom today hoping to avoid serving more jail time. he recently finished serving a five year, four month sentence in federal prison. he is scheduled to serve an additional year in san francisco county jail for lying about where he lived on election documents. at today's hearing his attorney will asked the judge to wave an additional jail sentence saying he has been punished enough. los angeles attorney goes from publish defender top defendant. mon cap jenkins pled not guilty to charges of assault and battery. authorities say she drunkingly kicked a group of police

officers after they told her she was too drunk to board a flight at san francisco international airport. reports say she refused suggestions to sober up and catch a later flight. police arrested her after she reportedly started screaming quote one, two, three, four, 5:00 rock. it's a move that could cost city of san jose thousands. state wildlife officials have filed an environmental complaint against the city claiming its violated pollution laws for failing to adequately clean up homeless camps. now in january, the water district released a report saying the city spent more than $275,000 last year and removed more than 2,000 cubic yard of debris. san francisco taxi driver is the winner of a $1.9 million mega million jackpot ticket.

50-year-old kendra casey bought the ticket in san bruno. the ticket matched five of the six numbers. if he did get the power ball number, he would have been splitting the $414 million jackpot. a power ball ticket sold in hayward also worth $2 million. that winner bought the lucky ticket at a 7-eleven store. the store received a check worth about $11,000 for selling that winning ticket. so far no winner though has come forward. the stanford men's basketball team will play its first game in the 2014ncaa tournament against new mexico this morning. tipoff scheduled 10:40.

month. some patients at ucsf are being informed about a data breach. computers with information on nearly 10,000 patients were stolen from the ucsf family medicine center on sloyt boulevard. we spoke with one man who said he is nervous after receiving notification from ucsf. >> just curious to what other reasons. and what the information will be used for that they captured. and so many people being asked their information out is kind of spooky. >> they say so far there is no evidence that anyone has tried to access or use that stolen information. a student at san jose state has filed a $5 million claim against the school in a racially charged bullying case. the student identified as 17- year-old donald williams junior

complained his roommates repeatedly abused and made fun of him because he is black. an advisor knew about the resident and ignored an explosive and dangerous situation. they have been charged with misdemeanor hate crimes and battery. today negotiators for the university of california and 13,000 patient care workers will go back to the bargaining table to try to avoid a strike. that strike is set to begin on monday and last for five days. uc spokesman says the last minute talk is a good sign. union leaders announced last week that workers would walk out over allegations that the university is engaging in unfair bargaining practices. but the university believes that wages are the real reason they are threatening a strike. members of congress want to hear from the chief executive officer of general motors. mary has been sum monday to an

april 1st hearing in washington, d.c.. they want to ask her about gm's response to reports of faulty ignition switches. they have recalled more than $1.5 million cars because the switches may change positions. at least 12 people have died and those have been linked to the problem. shoppers rely on scanners to charge the same price they see on paper tags attached to store shelves. but nationally the price charged is hire. 2% of the time. earlier this month safeway was ordered to pay a multimillion dollar fine for over charging customers. now a san jose company is trying to change that with a secure wi-fi tag system that is connected to this cash register scanner. >> we wanted to bring the internet down the aisle to every single object in every retail store in the world. >> the company says the system pay pays for itself in less

summer. we got to look at the work to be done. two of the four runways at sfo will close from may to september. the airport will install some soft concrete that will slow down the plane if it over shoots the runway. we are told the construction could create some minor flight delays. the warriors have unvailed two new features to improve the fan experience at oracle arena. the new speakers allow fans in the upper deck to hear the squeak of the sneakers on the court. they are also showing off a new app that will serve up announcements about things like upgrades or deals on merchandise. and they can post pictures on a large instagram wall. 4:51 is the time. clinging to -- cleaning the streets in san francisco but not in your wallet. >> putting up a fight to stay in the competition. what brought jennifer lopez to

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. seat belts may have saved the lives of six people in a violent crash involving two cars. white toyota four runner you can see there flipped on to its side and four teenagers and two

adults suffered minor to moderate injuries in that crash because they were wearing seat belts. police don't believe drugs, alcohol, or speed were factors in that crash. we are learning more about an oregon man's crime spree that ended with a deadly shooting of a mendocino county sheriffs deputy. ricardo chainy shot and killed deputy rickey near fort bragg on wednesday. they are calling the deputies killing an ambush. there was another violent incident just hours earlier. chainy was involved in a shootout with a store owner at a usually quiet mendocino county tourist spot. >> i was able to see the barrel of the gun before i rolled into the kitchen and luckily i just made it in to the one spot where the ricochet wouldn't get me. >> investigators say chainy was also responsible for a carjacking that same day. and they say he was carrying two rifles and a shotgun when he was filially killed by a sheriff -- finally killed by a sheriffs lieutenant. there is a disturbing --

there is new video as well of the bombing in progress. it shows a man lighting a fuse just outside the center folds nightclub on broadway on november 13th. you can see the explosion that followed. the video helped police identify and eventually arrest the man seen lighting that fuse. it also lead to the arrest of two men that police say were the master minds on of the operation. they have pled not guilty to charges tied too that nightclub bombing. police also release photos of the explosive material that they seized at orman doe's home. san francisco drivers will get help avoiding parking tickets. dan preston founded metro mile.

it uses the gps to tell car owners where their cars are parked and could be getting a ticket because it's street sweeping day. >> you leave your car in the street a couple of days and it goes by. it's the number one ticket given out. >> those tickets cost you about $64 and last year san francisco made $31 on those kinds of tickets. the metro mile app will be free. it goes live in san francisco on march 31st. san francisco's mknoblet time has come to an end on american idol. she had one last chance to sing to be saved. you can see jennifer lopez very emotional during the performance but in the end the judges could not agree to save her and she was sent home. the judges could have saved her but again they couldn't agree. >> his is my goal.
