debris that could be connected to the missing malaysia airlines yet. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning. thank you for joining us. it is friday, march 21st i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, some people are talking about allergies and the weather changing. >> allergies are awful. i know oak is up there. so i will post that as well. coming up here. it's way up there and it's going higher on saturday. we do have a cooler pattern today. low clouds are in place. cooler coast and bay. today is warmer inland. oakland will go 65 today. just a pretty good overcast there right now. it will be more of a westerly breeze as well. low clouds in place. and that means cooler pattern. so 30s and 40s and 50s. pretty big spread on some of the lows. novato at 39 degrees. 50 in san francisco. delta breeze not rip roaring

yet but it's much stronger than it was yesterday that is for sure. and low clouds are up there making a pretty good little push inland and covering most of the coast. so we call it fog, sun. it will be cooler. a little breezy for some inland. probably down about 5-10 degrees overall for a few which means upper 60s and low 70s. 50s and 60s closer to the water. here is sal. steve, happy friday. here we are. and traffic is getting a little busier now that we are getting into the 6:00 hour. i do want to mention the traffic at the toll plaza has become a little bit more crowded. the drive time is up a little bit. it's about 20 minutes including a 10-15 minute wait at the toll plaza. about 20 coming into san francisco. that is your drive time. there are no major problems on the way out from san francisco to oakland. this is oakland now at the coliseum. and traffic in both directions looks good. southbound 880 on the left there from downtown oakland is taking less than fivemies.

580 has been a mess already. we have a minor crash that cleared quickly in dublin. that is why the traffic is slow. once you get to castro valley it looks good. there are no problems on the nimitz freeway and also in san jose santa clara valley 85 and 280 looks good. and 101 looks good in san francisco. but you can see 580 as we mentioned from grant line to 680 the drive time is already 37 minutes and then later on on 580 it's only five. 6:02 let's go back to the desk. we are following breaking news in san jose. firefighter rounce the scene at a fire on church. ktvu janine de la vega just arrived on the scene and has more. definitely looks like a pretty active scene. >> reporter: yeah there are fire engines all around us. this is in willow glen. i want to show you what is burning. this is the church of god of san jose. it's a home to a congregation of about 100 people.

the back of the building is what is on fire. it is a church office. when we arrived here, you could see lots of smoke, smell a lot of smoke in the air and what we know right now is that about 5:30 passer byes apparently called this fire in and saw flames about 15-20 feet high shooting into the air. when firefighters arrived, they started to extinguish it. it is in the back of the building. we did speak to the pastor's wife who says she woke up to the sound of windows breaking, all sorts of noises. she came out here. she is in complete shock. she said she locked up the church at about 8:00 last night. so she has no idea what happened here. it's still too early to figure out what caused this. again fire is knocked down but it is definitely not under

control. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega. >> thank you. time is 6:04. in other news we have developing news from richmond. police there are in facing the city's -- are investigating the city's first homicide of the year. last night the body of a with who had been shot was found on a sidewalk. alex savidge is joining us live at the richmond police station now. this investigation is in its early stages. what is going on? >> reporter: good morning, to you, dave. witnesses did report seeing a suspicious car speeding away from the shooting scene last night and detectives do want to speak with the people inside that car. it's described as a burgundy sedan with gold rims on it. that is the best lead investigators have to go on this morning. the shooting happened just before 10:00 last night. it was near the intersection of florida avenue and south fourth street. the victim in this case was a woman in her 30s and she was found lying on the sidewalk there. she had been shot several times in the upper body.

paramedics did come out and tried to revive her there, but she was pronounced dead. officers were in that neighborhood and they did hear this gunfire but the department shot spotter detection system is what helped them pinpoint exactly where the shooting was. >> the shot spotter was very critical in that we were able to listen to the shots and gives us an exact pinpoint location on the exact side of the street where the victim was ultimately located. >> reporter: so far police cannot say why this woman was targeted. this is the first killing of the year. it's a city that has seen a dramatic reduction in violent crime recently. last year there were 16 homicides here in rich monday. that was the lowest total we've had in three decades. alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police are investigating a shooting last night. it was near city college.

around 8:30 a man was shot just blocks away from from the college. police found several shell casings on the ground. police feared the gunman had run on the campus but they were not able to find him. and they searched an area by a whole foods store. that victim was shot in the ankle and is expected to survive. a man is behind bars after firing shots on a busy freeway during the evening commute yesterday. it happened about 5:30 last night along highway 4 at morello in martinez. a driver that had recently just got out of jail took a shot at another driver after some kind of confrontation. police caught up with the gunman just a short distance away and they took him into custody. no one was hurt. happening today this is the fifth anniversary of who many people call the darkest day in oakland's history. tara moriarty is joining us

from police headquarters with more on the men being honored today. >> the killings of these police officers were the only -- it was the single deadliest attack on police officers since 1970 when four chp officers were shot and killed by two men. and now behind me here in the lobby are the photographs and the names etched in stone of the four fallen police officers. they were shot and killed five years ago march 21, 2009 is when nixon was pulled over during a traffic stop. she shot and killed two officers and killed two more when swat team officers attempted to apprehend him two hours later. he staged an ambush of the swat officers from his hiding place and killed in a barrage of gunfire. three sergeants mark dunakin, ervin romans, and daniel sakai were shot and killed.

john hege died later. a memorial park for the fallen officers will also be open to the public to allow people to honor their sacrifice. we will be at the service later this morning and we'll bring you a live update. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. a brush fire in pittsburgh came dangerously close to power lines. at 3:15 yesterday afternoon firefighters received a call about a burning field near the pittsburgh power generating plant. thick black smoke could be seen as far away as concord and martinez. >> there was a lot of smoke. so when we drove down the street here, there was fire right there. a lot of fire. >> pg&e crews checked out the fire to make sure it did not damage any high voltage lines. investigators are trying to figure out if it was started

accidentally or deliberately. time 16:09 -- time is 6:09. ten men living in temporary housing need a new place to stay. their house caught fire yesterday. it happened a little after 4:00 p.m. at a care facility for adult men. there were flames on the first and second floors of the home by the time firefighters got there. the fire took down a power line in front of the home which made it hard for firefighters to put out those flames. damage is estimated at $350,000. now to our continuing coverage of the missing malaysia airlines jet. search planes looking for debris off the coast of australia did not find anything today. five planes were sent to an area in the southern indian ocean where satellite images show something that could be debris from that missing flight. but even with the good weather today, the planes were not able to find anything. the first ships begin arriving

in that search area tomorrow. >> it's about the most inaccessible spot you could imagine on the face of the earth. but if there is anything down there, we will find it. we owe it to the families of those people to do no less. >> the fbi is involved in the investigation into the missing plane. computers from the pilots homes and flight simulator are being shipped to the fbi's lab in quant koa -- to quantico, virginia. we have a special section on our website on the search for flight 370. it includes a timeline of ten other aviation mysteries. the link is on the front page of ktvu.com under hot topics. time is 6:10. internal revenue service warning about a huge scam using the irs name. the government says 20,000 people around the country have been targeted by people posing as irs agents. the scammers call you up and say the taxpayer owes money and

has to pay it immediately using a prepaid debt card or wire transfer. anyone who refuses is threatened with arrest, deportation, and losing a business or driver's license. the irs says some of the victims have lost more than $1 million so far. it is a move that may end up costing the city of san jose thousands of dollars in fines. and also lead to new orders to clean up homeless camps. they filed an environmental complaint against the city claiming it violated pollution laws by not properly cleaning up homeless camps. in january a report by the water district showed that the city cement more than $275,000 last year and removed more than 2,000 cubic yards of debris from homeless camps. time is 6:11. twitter doesn't look like it but it turned eight years old today. and the social network has a gift for its users. they have launched a first tweet tool to show you your

welcome back. san francisco police still searching for the driver possible for a todayly hit and run in the visitation valley neighborhood late yesterday morning. investigators sent us this photo you are looking at of the suspects suv. this came from a surveillance camera in that neighborhood. it's a white dodge durango suv. that suv struck and killed a woman in her 60s as she was walking across the crosswalk of visitation avenue and bay shore boulevard late yesterday morning. police say the driver circled back to look at the woman in the street. >> that driver made a u-turn and drove southbound on bay shore slowly driving by as he passed the victim. >> now this was the sixth time this year that a person has been killed while walking on the streets of san francisco. that is more than the number of homicides in the city this year. today negotiators for the

university of california will go back to the bargaining table to avoid a strike. that strike will begin on monday and last for five days. the university believes the last minute talks is a good sign. union leaders claim the university is engaging in unfair bargaining practices but the university believes that wages are the real reason they are threatening a strike. your time is 6:19. now we know a san francisco taxi driver is the winner of a $1.9 million mega million dollar lotto jackpot ticket. he bought the ticket from huntington liquors in san bruno. the ticket matched five of the six numbers in tuesday's drawing. if he had picked the mega number, he would have been splitting the $414 million jackpot with two other people from florida and maryland. now a power ball ticket sold in hayward is worth $2 million. the winner bought that lucky ticket at a 7-eleven store. it matched five winning numbers but not the power ball.

the store by the way received a check for about $11,000 because they sold that winning ticket. sol far until winner has come -- so far no winner has come forward. sal has traffic for us on this friday morning. sal. >> reporter: the million dollar traffic report. >> yes. >> but you get it for free. >> isn't that great? >> good morning, everybody. let's take a look at what you have. the bay bridge in the eastbound highway 4, highway 24 everything is getting crowded now on the roadways. and there goes bart. bart is doing well. highway 4 is slow out of pittsburg. and we have a traffic on 680 getting busier. and we have a 25 minute drive time between oakland and san francisco that keeps increasing by the minute here. although there are no problems on the bridge. 580 has been terrible. we had a couple of minor crashes. they were not to talk about but the traffic is not good from

livermore to dublin. it's also slow at the castro valley y and in the south bay or on the way to the south bay things are getting busier on 880 southbound. speaking of san jose you are off to a good start there. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. good morning, everybody. a couple very funny comments coming in from the city. summer has officially arrived because fog is in. there you go. it didn't take long. i will tell you this will be a pretty good little cool down. so cooler with some low clouds. it will still be sunny inland. the weekend shows some morning fog favoring more saturday. i think sunday looks pretty good. it will be warm on monday. rain next wednesday. rain next wednesday. you are asking me. >> people ask me too. >> people ask me as well. no, we are no done with the rain. and maybe even next weekend too. there are signs that early april if you believe some of the long range stuff. i tend to think things will change. low clouds are changing though. they were not there yesterday,

but they are there today. it will be cooler and breezy today. especially coast and bay. a slight warmup saturday and sunday into monday. that looks like increasing clouds on tuesday. san francisco near 70 yesterday. not today. saw a lot of upper 40s. 40s a little westerly breeze so it will be cooler. we will go for a high of 64 degrees. there are other areas that are warmer and cooler. low clouds in place. in fact must'ving over the -- in fact moving over the bay. 40s and 50s on the temps with novato at least that observation saying 39. so there it is chilly for some. no doubt about it. and low clouds not going anywhere any time soon. well there is always breaks on the coast 29 up in tahoe. 47 sacramento. and that little system right there which went in right near monterey helped enhance the offshore push. inland temps which were warm yesterday had a tropical feel. they will come into the upper 60s and lower 70s. the weekend looks good. mondays are all right and

increasing clouds tuesday and sure looks like rain wants to visit northern california on wednesday. so fog, low clouds, sunny. cooler and breezy. there is a little bit of a delta breeze in place. that is for sure. 60s and 70s with a few upper 50s. vallejo at 68. benicia had a couple report jenny said steve it's cold. so there you go. joslin and daily city said the same thing. it's cold. 60s and 70s on the temps. upper 50s and lower 60s. upper 60s on the peninsula. it looks pretty good for the weekend. just a little warmer on sunday and monday. increasing clouds tuesday. >> thank you, steve. this will be a busy day on wall street as six companies go public today. it will be the busiest single day since january. four of the companies making their debuts are in the tech sector. the most closely watched of today's ipo's is a-10 network.

it makes equipment to boost performance of data center. starbucks says it will sell wine and beer in more of its stores. right now it sells alcohol in 26 stores. it plans to expand that to thousands. the adult beverages will be sold only after 4:00 p.m.. starbucks says people already gather in their stores to relax and see friends. and this expands the idea into the evening hours. what do workers think of their boss? there is a new survey that asks workers all over the country that question which bay area executive is ranked number one for corporate leadership? >> and getting the fans more involved at warriors games. the new features just added to the arena.

welcome back. time is 6:25. some patients at ucsf they are just now being notified about a that that breach involving their personal information and it happened two months ago. computers with information on almost 10,000 patients were stolen from the ucsf family medical center back in january. the ucsf spokesperson says it took them this long to investigate and fiend out who was investigated. we talked with one man who said

he is nervous about getting a notification letter. >> just curious as to what other reasons and what the information will be used for that they captured. and so many people being scared their information is out. >> ucsf says so far there is no evidence that anyone has tried to access or use that stolen information. san francisco international airport preparing to shut down two of its four runways. that could cause delays this summer. we got a look at the work that is being done as part of a five- year program of safety improvements. two of the four runways will close from may to september. the airport will then install soft concrete that will slow down the landing gear if a plane over shoots the runway. again the construction could cause minor flight delays. crews have already completed work on the other two runways. the warriors have unvailed two new features to improve the fan experience at the aretha.

♪ mattress discounters good morning. welcome back to ktvu channel 2 morning news. we are still following breaking news. we are live in san jose. firefighters have been battling a fire at a church. ktvu janine de la vega is there. she is talking to witnesses as to what happened. she will bring you a live report in just a couple minutes. we thank you for joining us here on ktvu channel 2 morning news. friday, march 21st i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. time is 6:30. steve paulson i heard you talking about rain coming in next week. >> next wednesday looks pretty good. a week from today looks pretty good. april 5th looks pretty good. we'll see. but it wouldn't surprise me after a sunny and warm winter. low clouds up and down rt coast and making along with high clouds as well. especially san francisco north

giving us mostly cloudy coast and bay. some areas definitely clear away from this fog bank. low clouds. somewhat of a westerly breeze. fog, sun, breezy it will still be nice inland. we had a lot of 70s to near 80 degrees. we will go 65 in oakland today. the overcast came in very early. it will not retreat any time soon. so with that in place and in mind, we also have summer arriving in the city. so there is low clouds there. 50. been there all morning long. 39 novato. 40s for many here. and some of that low cloud is holding up the temperatures. overall look for a sunny day inland but it will be cooler. sunny and breezy. a few partly cloudies to the north bay and low clouds favoring the coast bay. 50s and 60s there. upper 60s and low 70s inland. here is sal. traffic is actually doing pretty well in some areas but getting super busy in others. bay bridge for example we have

a 30 minute drive time from oakland to san francisco. most of that time is spent at the toll plaza but then you will have time on bridges as well. but there are no bridges on that upper deck. 880 northbound and southbound is getting a lot more crowded as you drive through oakland. there are no major problems. still about a five minute drive. maybe a little less from downtown oakland. so it's not a huge drive there. this is a look at highway 101, 280 and 85 in the south bay. and today the south bay is actually looking pretty good. we have a little bit of slow traffic here and there but for the most part the commute has been good as you move up to san francisco the same thing goes. there is not a lot of slow traffic on 101 and 280. grant line road that has improved. 35 minute drive time. now let's go back to the desk. we are following breaking news out of san jose where firefighters still working on a fire at a church. janine de la vega is there on the scene with the progress firefighters are making. janine. >> reporter: yes, they have

made good progress. i just spoke to a fire captain that told me in the last ten minutes they were able to get the fire under control. here at the church of god. this is on minnesota avenue near curtis in the willow glen area. we are told this fire did not spread inside to the church. it was confined to a back office. it's still a very active scene with a lot of engines here blocking minnesota avenue because they will have to do a lot of mopup. let's go to video that we took earlier this morning in the last hour. people passing by spotted the flames shooting about 15-20 feet into the air at about 5:30 this morning and they called 911. firefighters say they found a building that was added on to the back of the church on fire and they worked to put it out. there was concern about flying embers and not having those spread to trees and the houses next door. but firefighters were able to prevent that from happening.

the pastor's wife who lives in the neighborhood says she woke up after hearing the commotion. >> i woke up to a bunch of sounds and i looked out my bedroom window and saw a bunch of flames and smoke rising up. i woke up the family. i just said everybody get up. the church office is on fire. >> reporter: she has the keys to the church and says they were last here at 8:00 last night. everything seemed fine. she wants to know how this fire started. they say in that office they keep their financial paper work and records. this is a shock to them and they really want to see how badly things are damaged. she is hopeful it's not devastating. she says it's a congregation of about 100 that attend this christian church. again they are all still in shock. they say that church will still go on this sunday. at this point we do not have a cause of what started this fire. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. also new this morning fire

investigators trying to determine the cause of a fire in san jose early this morning at the eldorado bar. firefighters say that fire started inside in the back office area of the restaurant just before 2:00 this morning. now they were able to contain it within about 20 minutes and there were no injuries. time is 6:35. happening today this is the fifth anniversary of what many call the darkest day in the history of the oakland police department. ktvu tara moriarty is in oakland at the church where fallen police officers are going to be honored today. tara. >> reporter: yeah this is going to be a very somber, very introspective day for oakland police department. speaking with many of them, they say this is a time when they want to come together privately to grieve and remember their fallen officers. this is where it will happen here at this church at 10:00 this morning. march 21st, 2009 is when convicted felon and wanted parolee nixon shot and killed

two officers and killed two more when swat team officers attempted to apprehend him. he staged an ambush of the officers and killed in a barrage of gunfire. three sergeants march dunakin, ervin romans and daniel sakai were shot and killed that day. a service to remember them will take place at 10:00 this morning at the cathedral church and a memorial park will be open to the public to allow people to honor their sacrifice. we will be at the service later this morning. but again it will be private. it will last one hour. the families of the fallen officer will be here but we are told that it will be a simple service and opd is doing this because they say they do not want to forget. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:36. we are learning more about a

man's deadly crime spree. he shot and killed deputy ricky near fort bragg on wednesday. they are calling the deputy's killing an ambush. investigators say there was another violent incident just hours earlier. they say chainy was involved in a shootout with a store owner at a usually quiet tourist spot. >> i was able to see the barrel of the gun before i rolled into the kitchen. and luckily i just made it in to the one spot where the ricochet wouldn't get me. >> investigators say chainy was also responsible for carjacking that same day. and they say he was carrying two rifles and a shotgun when he was finally killed by a sheriffs lieutenant. student at san jose state has filed a $5 million claim against the university in a racially charged bullying case. now the student identified as 17-year-old donald williams junior claimed that his roommates repeatedly abused and made fun of him because he is

african american. williams claims a dormitory resident advisor knew about the resident and ignored a potentially dangerous situation. the roommates have been charged with misdemeanor hate crimes and battery. despite efforts to hire and keep more officers in the city, the san jose police department is expected to take another big hit. the city says if the current trends continue, the department could lose 100 officers by 2016. right now there are about 904 officers on the force and a new report shows despite an effort to restore pay to 2009 levels, the department has seen at least 100 officers leave every year. >> the retirement disability is one thing. but we need to be more competitive to our benefit package. not only will that help retention but it will also help

recruiting. >> the department says public safety continues to be one of their top concerns. but at a community meeting last night many people say with a decrease in the number of officers on the streets they don't feel safe. later today disgraced former san francisco supervisor ed jew will be back in a san francisco courtroom trying to avoid serving more jail time. ed jew recently finished serving a five year four month sentence in federal prison for extortion, bribery, and corruption. he is scheduled to serve an extra year in san francisco county jail for lying about where he lived on election documents. at today's hearing his lawyer will ask a judge to wave an additional jail sentence saying ed jew has been punished enough. 11 ceo's are ranked in the top 50 leaders by their workers.

rich monday. police looking for a car that was reported speeding away from a homicide scene late last night. ktvu alex savidge is at the richmond police headquarters with the technology that assisted the police response. >> reporter: there were officers in this neighborhood last night who heard gunfire but rich monday police are accrediting the city's shot spotter detection system with helping those officers locate the victim of this shooting. that is where a woman was found lying on the sidewalk and she had been shot several times in the upper body. paramedics were called up and they tried to revive her but they were unsuccessful and she was declared dead at the scene. police say they don't know at this point why this woman may have been targeted but the best lead in this case is from witnesses who saw a burgundy sedan with gold rims speeding away after this shooting.
