up. and 50s and 60s by the water. >> we have slow traffic in san jose. but we're going to start off at the toll plaza. it is a 25 minute drive time. it was more than that and things are improving on the way into san francisco. and as we look at the commute on the bridge, the traffic is okay heading out to the high rise 50 minutes from 880 over to highway 101. no problems in san jose along the freeways. 101 you see traffic after the 280 interchange. we see that. 85 is slowing off 17. in the neighborhood. a line 82 is rerouted for a fire at a church that we're

here about. take the 82 and three stops will be missed along the stretch. 580 out of the pass it is slow but getting better. let's go back to the desk. we're following developing news out of san jose. firefighters have been on the scene of a fire for about the last 90 minutes. and we are there and we have been talking with witnesses and including the pastor's wife. >> reporter: good morning to you. things have calmed down the fire is out but there is damage left inside the church here at the church of good of san jose. the windows have been broken out. inside there is a lot of charred furniture. this is a small church. it did not spread to the church it was to the back office.

people saw the fire and called 911. they found a building added on to the back of the church that was on fire. they were able to get a under control in an hour. there was concern about embers spreading. firefighters prevented that fire from spreading. the pastor and the wife live nearby and woke up to the sound of windows breaking. >> surprised hopeful that things will turn out okay. it is interesting i would like to know the cause behind it but i'm sure that time will tell that. >> reporter: the pastor's wife has keys to the church. they were here and everything was fine. the office where the fire started hold as lot of financial records. they are thankful it did not spread into the church but they are planning on holding services on sunday for the con gray gace, which is about 100 people. there is an investigators looking around, and collecting evidence. so far they say that nothing

appears to be suspicious. it does not appear that this church was targeted. they're not saying it is an accident because there needs to be more investigation. janine dela, vega. and officials are trying to determine the cause of a fire at a bar. the fire at the bar started inside and in a back office area just before 2:00 this morning. they were able to contain the fire within 20 minutes. there were no injuries. time is now 7:06. police are investigating a shooting last night near city college. around 8:30, man was shot near brighton and holloway avenues blocks from the college. several shell casings were found on the ground. police feared the gunman had run on to the campus but they could not find him. they searched the area around a

nearby whole foods store but nothing turned up. the shooting victim was hit in the ankle and will survive. meantime, man is in jail now after firing shots last night on a busy freeway during the commute. it was in martinez around 5:30 along highway 4. a driver who was released from jail recently fired at another driver after a confrontation. he was captured a short distance away. no one was hurt. this is the fifth anniversary of what is called the darkest day in the history of the oakland police department. and we go to a park where four police officers killed in the line of duty will be honored today. tara. >> reporter: good morning we are here at oak hill road where there is a public memorial here to honor the officers. we're told that the service at

10:00, that will be a very somber and private day. 2000 is when a felon and panted paroley shot and killed two officers then two more when s.w.a.t. members tried to capture him. he staged and ambush and was killed in a barrage of gunfire. three sergeants. mark dunakin, ervin romans and daniel sakai was killed. daniel hege died several days later a service to remember them will take place this morning at the cathedral of christ the light on harrison street here in oakland. we will be at the service but it will be private and last one hour. the families of the four fallen officers will be there but it will be a simple service and that they are doing this because they don't want to forget. we received a statement from the department and it reads, quote: this is a difficult day for the police department. rerecognize it is not only a

loss for the department but the family and the city as well. the department will spend today together and remembering and honoring our officers and the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. live from oakland. 7:09. because of our drought, fire crews made sure that a brush fire in contra costa did not flare up again. it took hours to contain the flames near the pittsburg power generating plant t scorched 40 acres. >> scary and dangerous. and this is not good. if people have issues breathing, like my father in law, he is not here, he would have problems. >> no one was hurt in the fire. pg and e made sure power lines were not damaged. firefighters suspect that humans started the fire.

7:09. now to the coverage of the missing airline jet. search planes looking for debris in the southern indian ocean did not find anything today. five planes were sent to an area 1500 miles southwest of australia will images from five days ago showed something that could be debris from the missing flight, however, the items may have sunk by enough. even with the good weather the planes did not spot anything. the first ships will arrive tomorrow. >> we have been trying everything we have got at that area to try to learn more about what the debris may be. >> the fbi is involved in the investigation into the miss -- into the missing plane. computers from the pilot's only and flight simulator are being shipped to the lab in virginia. the fbi will try to retrieve

police are looking for the driver responsible for a deadly hit and run in the visitation valley neighborhood. we have this photo through looking at of the vehicle. it came from a camera in that neighborhood. now it is a white dodge durango suv t struck and called woman in her 60s as she was walking across the crosswalk of visitation and bay shore boulevard late yesterday morning. now police say the driver actually circled back to look at the dying woman on the street. >> that driver made a u-turn and drove southbound on bay shore slowly driving by as he passed the victim. >> now this was the sixth time

this year that a person has been killed walking on the streets of san francisco. that is more than the number of homicides in the city this year. in his 7:16. a woman has been charged in man slaught weir a crash that killed her daughter. police say pat the seratos was driving when it crossed into traffic and hit another vehicle. her 4 year old daughter died later. they say that the child's car seat was not properly secured. police say she and the other driver involved may both be charged with drunk driving pending results from toxicology tests. and today negotiators for the university of california and 13,000 patient care workers are going back to the bargaining table trying to avoid a strike. the strike is set to begin monday and go on for five days. the university believes the

and a los angeles attorney goes from being a public defender to defendant after an incident here in the bay area. monica jenkins plead guilty to assault and battery in a courtroom. authorities say she kicked several police officers after they told her she was too drunk to get on a flight at san francisco international airport. reports say she refused suggestions to sober up and

car that was reported. >> we're live with the investigation into the first homicide of the year. >> witnesses reported seeing a sedan and speeding away from the area. detectives are trying to find that and talk to the people were inside of it. that's the best lead to go on. they are investigating a shooting and it was near the intersection of florida avenue and south fourth street. the victim was about 30 years old. she was found on the sidewalk. she had been shot in the upper body. paramedics tried to restrive here. she was pronounced dead. they cannot say why she may have been targeted. there were officers in the area patroling the neighborhood who heard gunfire but police are crediting the shot spotter

detection system with helping them locate the victim. >> it was critical in that we were able to listen to the shots and it gives us a pinpoint location on the side of the street where the victim was located. the city has seen a reduction in crime. there were 16 homicides. they will knock on the doors and anybody who may have information. >> and a court arraignment is for a man suspected of a deadly crash that killed two people.

sheriff's deputy. police say they had arrested him just two weeks ago on gun and drug charges. new information about a shooting at the a camp ground. deputies arrested ken patrick neville. he killed his house mate's lover. it was wednesday morning at a trailer in the camp ground. investigators say that his 5 # year old house mate did not witness the shooting. the victim had been living with the two men since last summer. and a move that may cost san jose thousands in fines and lead to orders to clean up himless camps. officials filed an environmental complaint against the city. claim that it violated pollution laws but not cleaning up camps along coyote creek. a report showed the city spent

$275,000 took away more than 2000 cubic yards of debris from the homeless camps. a student filed a $5 million claim against the university in a bullying case. that student is a 17 year old don williams junior said his roommates abused him because he is african-american. the he claim as dormitory resident advisor knew about it and ignored, quote, a potentially explosive and dangerous situation. the roommates have been charged with hate crimes and battery. the attorney for williams expects the claim to be rejected and he plans to file a lawsuit. 7:37. despite efforts to hire and keep more officers, the police department is expected to take another big hit. if the trend continues the

all the windows are gone and it is black and dark. the smoke is gone. i'm hopeful something will come out of it. i don't know. i'm trying to look at the positive side. it is devastating. >> investigators are on the seen looking for a cause. the bureau of atf has been notified which standard when there is a fire at a church in case that the fire was started on purpose. but officials say so far it does not appear to be suspicious. they locked the building last night and everything seemed line. , they are thinkful it did not spread. some of those of the church have been here and coming to look at the damaged.

debris along the area. a shooting at a camp ground. deputies arrested the 56-year- old old ken patrick neville. he is accused of killing his house mate's lover. it was in the lawson landing camp ground. investigators say that the 53 year old house mate did not see the shooting. the 19 year old victim had been living with the two men since last summer. a student at san jose filed a $5 million claim against the school in a racially charged bullying case. the student as 17-year-old don williams junior complained his roommates abused him and made fun of him because he is black. he claims that a dormitory resident advisor knew about the incidents and ignored, quote, a potentially explosive and dangerous situation. the roommates have been charged with hate crimes and battery.

williams' attorney expects it to be rejected. he will file a lawsuit. despite the efforts to hire and keep police officers in san jose, the police department will make another hit. the city says that the current trend continues, the police department could lose 100 officers by the year 2016. right now there are about 904 officers on the force. a new report shows that despite the effort to restore their pay to 2009 levels, 100 officers have left every year. >> the retirement disability is an issue, pay is another. we need to be competitive because not only will that help retention but recruiting. >> the police department said that it is one of the top priorities but at a meeting last night, many people said with a drop in the number of officers on the street, they don't feel as safe.

there is information about an explosion at a san francisco nightclub last year. there is new video of the bombing in progress. it show as man lighting a fuse outside of the club on broadway on november 13th. you can see the explosion that followed. the video helped firefighter and arrest the man lighting the fuse. and it led to the master minds of the scheme. police released photos of the explosive material they seized at a home. it is not clear what they planned to do with the stockpile of bomb making materials. 8:38. today a disgraced supervisor will be back in a courtroom hoping to avoid more jail time.
