the problem. . the dmv investigating a possible security breach that could put thousands of people's information at risk. good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. officials at the dmv issued a statement late this afternoon, saying while there's no evidence of a direct breach, the agency's computer system, they are looking into a possible breach from external vendors that process the dmv's credit card transactions, as well as the credit cards themselves. the website, which first exposed the massive target data breach, says this new issue involves online payments for dmv-related services. an alert by mastercard says those transactions took place between august 2 of last year and january 31st of this year and that the information compromised includes credit card numbers, expiration dates, and the three-digit security

code printed on the back of the cards. new at 6:00, john sasaki is live in san francisco with the security flaws this issue exposes. john? >> reporter: ken, we're in union square, where people from around the bay area and around the world come to spend money, most using some form of credit. word of yet another data breach didn't seem to surprise anyone here, but it did raise concerns. people seemed to realize that this is now just a part of life, starting last december with news of target's massive data breach, of course followed by numerous breaches, large and small, at neiman marcus, michael's and now the dmv. we talked with a consumer psychologist who confirms people's attitudes about the sense of the security of their information is changing. people may now view data breaches as just another reality in today's world. >> so i think we have two groups of people. we have a whole group of people that are putting their head in the sand, saying it's happening, there's nothing i can do about it, whatever. and i'll deal with it after it

happens. and then there's another group of people that are really saying i'm going to use cash more often, going to be much more careful. >> doesn't seem like it's being protected very much, especially if it the dmv, it's the government, you would think they would have more safe guards on that. definitely makes me worried. i haven't used my credit card on that site, but i do use it online all the time. >> reporter: a survey conducted last month shows 32% of consumers say they will switch from credit cards to cash more often. the trade-off is paying with plastic and gaining convenience over security with carve. more details now on how to keep your credit cards safe. citibank advises never give your account number over the phone unless you made the call. prevent changes to charge slips by crossing out blank spaces, such as when you tip in cash. save receipts, and always check them against your monthly statements. carry only one or two credit cards. and get a card with extra security features, such as a

photo id. a s.w.a.t. manhunt in morgan hill ended peacefully this afternoon. the santa clara county sheriff's office says it got a call about 5:30 this morning of a suspicious car on croix road. when deputies arrived, they say the driver rammed at least two deputy vehicles. a deputy then opened fire. the driver crashed in the gulley, got out and began to run. neighbors were told to stay indoors until the driver was taken into custody, which happened about noon. in san francisco, authorities have not released the name of a man shot to death by police in a city park last night. officers responded to a 911 call in bernal heights park about a man with a gun at about 7:00 p.m. police say more than one officer opened fire at the man, after hepointed the weapon. the officers involved are now on paid administrative leave. today, did the park was full of joggers and dog walkers. >> at this time of day, i do see people gathering and sort of drinking. they seem rowdy at times, but

i've never seen it to that point where, you know, someone is getting to pick a fight or showing a gun or anything like that. >> the department says it will hold a neighborhood meeting next week to answer residents' questions about what happened last night. the shooting sparked a protest that ended at the hall of justice. this photo was posted on twitter, of police lined up on bryant street. officials say protesters vandalized several police cars with graffiti. an oakland woman is calling on police to do more to discourage side shows that she says led to an accident that totaled her car. [ tires screeching ] >> this video was posted by a youtube user named roy montoya who said this latest side show happened at 106th avenue and macarthur in oakland. we spoke with a woman who also videotaped the side show this morning. she tells us pliska to break it up and when the participants scattered at high speed, her car was struck by another

driver. >> they didn't check to see if i was all right. they didn't say nothing. elves mad at me, going to come get me. i don't understand that. people are getting hurt from these side shows. they need to realize that. they need to do something different. >> oakland police say they don't have a record of any arrests on this side show. they say officers who do come across them generally just try to get the drivers to leave. in richmond, violence has flared after a relatively violent week, following the city's first and second homicides of 2014. christina rendon spoke to the family of one of the victims. >> reporter: police are following up on these two murders, don't have many leads and don't think the crimes are connected. but one family is pleading for a gunman to come forward. the family of clarence wesley tried to comfort each other on

the sidewalk where the 24-year- old walls gunned down friday night. clarence was walking on wall avenue near 35th street when someone shot him several times. >> he was minding his own business and doing his homework and trying to better himself in life. >> reporter: a memorial of candles marked the spot, where clarence fell. it's a similar sight across town, where one day before a woman was killed on the street. [ foreign language ] >> reporter: she calls it a sad situation. she heard the gunshots, but didn't see anything. in this case, police are looking for a burgandy-colored sedan with gold rims. [ speaking spanish ] >> reporter: abigail says the area is dangerous and she won't go outside at night. police understand the public's concern. just weeks ago, violent crimes were reportedly down 27% compared to last year, but no one could have predicted two homicides in two days. >> we're going to have crime, just like everybody else s we

illegal dumping and graffiti there. she says cleanup days do more than help beautify neighborhoods. they also help build a sense of community. >> what's beautiful about these community gatherings, they give communities the opportunity to know each other and realize they are not alone in their desire to see a clean, healthy, safe oakland. >> today's cleanup was part of my oakland is beautiful campaign. another cleanup day is scheduled for next weekend. tonight, cal trans will close a stretch of highway 101 in the north bay, shutting down both directions of the highway from petaluma to roanoke park starting at 11:00 tonight with only one lane available starting at 8:00 p.m. detours will be set up. crews will demolish the overpass at the old redwood highway interchange, all part of a plan to improve traffic flow. the blue angels are back in the skies in the los angeles county air show. budget cuts forced the blue angels to cancel dozens of shows last year, including san francisco's fleet week. now the navy precision flyers

. developing news right now you in washington state. a grueling search is under way at this hour, after at least three people were killed when a huge mudslide came down on a half dozen homes. these are pictures that you're looking at from the scene, where rescuers right now are searching for survivors who may be trapped inside homes or in the mud. this slide struck this morning in snohomish county 60 miles north of seattle. at least eight people were injured, including a 6-month- old baby who is reportedly in critical condition. while there's no national weather service rain gauge in the town, that area has received more than 7 inches of rain in the last month. new developments in the hunt for the missing malaysian airlines jet. china released a satellite picture in the same area of the indian ocean searchers have been scouring. as long as there is hope, search teams will keep at it. it's now daylight off the coast of australia as the search resumes. scott thompson reports on this

latest potential clue more than two weeks after the airliner disappeared. >> reporter: china has released a new satellite image of what appears to be a large floating object in the southern indian ocean. the image was captured four days ago. the object was about 77 miles from the spot where australian satellite images also captured objects that could be related to the missing plane. those search crews have turned up nothing in the area. leaders remain cautiously optimistic. >> it is the most promising lead that's available internationally, but there are any number of other explanations about what might have been sighted as a result of the satellite imagery. >> reporter: the floating object in the chinese satellite image is about 74 feet by 43 feet, giving experts some compo to question whether the debris came from the missing airplane. >> it actually looks to be too big to be part of the airplane. there's no part of the airplane that's that wide. >> reporter: malaysian authorities say that they

searched 10,500 square nautical miles on saturday. three military jets and two civilian jets participated in the search. though the civilian jets don't have a radar, authorities are not downplaying their role. >> it is more likely that a pair of eyes are going to identify something floating in the ocean than much of the technical equipment that's on board the aircraft. >> reporter: with rescue efforts heading into a third week, officials are desperate to find anything that would lead them to the missing plane. scott thompson, ktvu channel 2news. russian forces moved to consolidate their control in crimea. at least one person was injured when russian troops stormed a base. this is video showing an armored vehicle bursting through the wall of the ukrainian air base. russian troops reportedly fired into the air, wounding one person who was taken away by an ambulance. in a separate incident, pro russian self defense forces

stormed another crimean military base and threw smoke bombs during that incident and retreated the base's headquarters. same-sex marriages are on hold in michigan. >> we've been waiting 11 years for this day. >> oh! >> couples lined up to get married in detroit this morning, but this afternoon, a federal appeals court suspended same-sex marriages at least through wednesday. the 6th circuit court will review yesterday's decision to strike down michigan's gay marriage ban. that is similar to what happened in california when gay marriages were temporarily legal in 2008 and then not until last summer when the supreme court legalized them again. veterans packed an east bay resources fair today to learn about opportunities as they return home. state and federal veterans agencies gave out information and individual advice at the veterans hall in heyward. the fair is part of an ongoing

effort by east bay state senator ellen corbett to help veterans transition back to civilian life. >> we want to connect them with services so they can receive training or education, loans for housing and other services to make sure we take care of them and thank them for their services. it's the least we can do. >> senator corbett says alameda county has more than 600,000 veterans. new at 6:00, hundreds of people lining up for a chance to play dress-up with the help of the san francisco opera. the opera is having a special sale this weekend on some of its costumes. as ktvu's katie utehs reports, there was no shortage of elaborate ensembles. >> armor, masks, hats, capes. >> so many capes! weather system, not approaching the bay area yet, but this will be the key factor in our forecast by tuesday and into wednesday, producing rain across southern california. right now, just patchy fog offshore that will gradually work its way closer to the bay for the overnight hours. current temperatures, we have 69 in fairfield. san jose right now at 65. san francisco, 57. santa rosa right now at 65 degrees. for tonight, partly cloudy and breezy. winds are on the order of around 10 to 20 miles an hour, bit of a chop on the bay waters this saturday evening. tomorrow, patchy morning fog, just a little bit warmer, and great weather for the oakland running festival for tomorrow. start out the day with patchy fog. at 7:00, temperatures in the upper 40s, on track to reach the upper 60s by 1:00, and then the extended forecast for next week, more clouds and we are tracking shower chances. overnight lows, first thing tomorrow morning starting out sunday, in the 40s across most

of the bay area, except a few spots in the upper 30s. santa rosa, napa, vallejo at 40 degrees, and fog coastside, a few patches into the bay as well. so high pressure has them building offshore. it will continue to strengthen for sunday. as a result, a little warmer after patchy morning fog. patchy fog lingering near parts of the immediate shoreline into the afternoon hours. then into next week, here's the change. you can see this area of low pressure developing offshore. a big drop-off in temperatures and showers developing. a chance into tuesday, better bet tuesday night and into wednesday. here's our forecast model. putting it into motion, patchy fog tomorrow morning. monday looks beautiful out there, with mostly sunny skies. monday, the warmest day of the week. then on tuesday, look what happens. more clouds, rain showers here in the bay area, and snow showers approaching the sierra, possibly snow advisory kicking in toward the west slopes of the sierra. forecast highs tomorrow, more 70s for walnut creek, livermore and pleasanton. oakland, 69. san jose, 72.

cupertino, 71. san francisco checking in at 65 degrees. look ahead at your five-day forecast, you can see temperatures a little warmer into sunday and into monday. once again, patchy fog lingering near parts of the shoreline for tomorrow afternoon. there we go with the big change. nice to talk about rain wrapping up march and possibly rain showers tuesday into wednesday, even a chance for thunderstorms. pretty interesting by midweek. >> okay. thank you, mark. it appears river otters are making a comeback in lake tahoe. a marine biologist with the u.s. forest service says they have been spotted at south lake tahoe, among other areas, for the first time in decades. river otters have also been returning to bay area waterways. in fact, in the past two years, the river otter ecology project has recorded about 600 otter sightings right here in the bay area. >> always look like they are having a good time, too. coming up, march madness is in full swing. >> but it may be hard to believe, but the perfect bracket still does exist. now the man behind it is hoping to get back his chance at a
