oakland running festival about to get underway. ktvu's katie utehs there on the ground. we'll have a live report in just a bit. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it is sunday march 23rd. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm allie rasmus in for claudine wong. let's get a quick look at the weather. a good morning for a run. a live look over the oakland estuary where we're partly sunny skies this morning and the clouds back with us along the coast around the bay into the north bay as well as the south bay. let's take a look. i'll show you where, hugging the coastline you can see along the peninsula as we head into the north bay, santa rosa, napa reporting, low clouds stretches through petaluma and novato. livermore woke up mostly cloudy. you're mostly sunny so you have the sunshine outside your door. the official sunrise will be in the next 9 minutes or so. you can see from oakland, hayward into fremont we have the low clouds with us again into san jose as well. i think it's going to pull back. i think we're going to be a lot

like yesterday. slightly warmer in the afternoon for most of us around the bay and inland, but here we go. let me show you what happens as we get into the 9, 10:00 hour. it's peeling away from our inland communities. it's still just inside the bay, and you can see it here along the coastline as we get into the afternoon. partly sunny, partly cloudy for the second half of the day along the coast. you can see it's going to just hang right here near the shore. again, a lot like what we had on saturday. temperature-wise, 44 in concord. 47 walnut creek. upper 40s in san francisco. the low 50s mountain view and 49 in san jose. as we get into the 9:00 hour, mid-40s to mid-50s. lunchtime feeling pretty good. upper 50s at the coastline to upper 60s around our inland communities, and for the second half of the day tack on a few degrees from what we had yesterday and it's pretty much where we stand for the second half of your sunday. 69 oakland, 69 san rafael. low 70s from redwood city into san jose. as we get into the workweek, changes coming our way. i'm tracking a storm for you

coming up. happening now about 10,000 people are getting ready to kick off the oakland running festival. ktvu's katie utehs is live at the starting line and tells us the energy level of the crowd out there is contagious. good morning katie. >> reporter: good morning. it is a little chilly out here, but you'd never know it. people are getting warmed up this morning. there's a load of neon behind me at the start festival. i'm joined by lee core began with the oakland running festival. what's new, what's exciting this year? >> well, 9,768 runners is new, and that is our biggest crowd ever. we've been growing. really the humidity this year seemed to have -- the community this year seemed to have really gotten behind this event. i think this year's going to be the best ever with the weather. >> weather looking fantastic. i want to show you a live look of the start line. look behind us you can see folks already starting to line up. thanks so much lee. like you said there are 9768

total participants. those people are going to be kicking off the marathon at 7:30. there's also a half marathon, a 5k a relay race and a kids run. we spoke with one castro valley runner who told us why he loves the oakland marathon. >> really it's the crowds that come out here, the people of oakland i think carry you all the way through the 26 miles. it's an amazing feeling. unlike any other marathon i've ever run. the people of oakland are amazing. >> like he said the crowds are amazing. they pump the runners up. there are lots of activities down here. if you're not a runner you can come down, enjoy the food truck, enjoy the concerts there's going to be some music acts. there are deejays along the way. my favorite fun fact of the day actually is that there are 10,000 granola bars out here this morning. more granola bars than runners this morning. coming up in our next live report i'll tell you about a few of the security changes that have made this year following the boston marathon.

live in oakland, katie utehs channel 2 news. >> ktvu is one of the event's sponsors. we have more information including a course map and street closures on ktvu.com. scroll down to the hot topics section. a deadly crash is being investigated in the city of san leandro. it happened just before 11:00 last night on east 14th and haste streets. two cars slammed right into each other by the cvs pharmacy. the accident closed down part of east 14th street for a short time during the investigation. >> we transported two patients to eden hospital and we had one patient that was debt on arrival. >> police say it is still not clear what caused this accident. >> if you've dealt with the dmv within the last seventh months your credit card information may have been ripped off. a potential security breach at the california department of motor vehicles prompted officials to issue a statement. in it it said there is no evidence of a "direct breach, but officials say there is a

possible breach from external vendors who processed dmv credit card transactions. the crebs on security web site involves online payments for dmv services and alerts from master cards indicates the transactions happened from august 2nd overlays year and january 31st 31st of this year. it includes credit card numbers, expiration dates and 3 digit security code printed right there on the back of your cards. developing news on the search for missing malaysian airlines flight 370. malaysia says france has satellite images of objects that could possibly be from the missing jet liner. this morning search planes are over the southern indiana ocean trying to find the plane. it went missing three weeks ago with 39 people on board -- 239 people on board. yesterday china released a satellite image of what appears to be a large floating object in the southern indian ocean. >> it is the most promising lead that's available internationally, but there are

in number of other explanations about what might have been sighted as a result of this satellite imagery. >> search planes and ships are also trying to find a pallet that was spotted from the air. wooden pallets are commonly used in shipping but can also be used in planes. >> an oakland woman says her car was slammed into during an illegal side show. >> she says the side show happened yesterday morning at 106th avenue in east oakland. a woman who videotaped the side show says a red car smashed into the front of her white car. >> people are getting hurt from these side shows and they need to realize that. they need to do something different. >> oakland police said they do not know or have any records of that side show. police in san jose are investigating a shooting that sent two men to the hospital. it happened yesterday afternoon in east san jose. one of the victims is said to have serious injuries.

no arrests have been made in in that case. san francisco police will hold a meeting this week to talk about a deadly police shooting at a park on friday night. officers responded to a 9-1-1 call about a man with a gun at bernal heights park. investigators say more than one officer opened fire at the man after they say he pointed a weapon at them. police say two weapons were ultimately found. the officers involved are now on paid administrative leave. the santa clara county sheriff's office is also investigating a deputy involved shooting. 42-year-old michael matagulay of san jose was investigated after he rammed into three patrol cars repeatedly in the morgan hills area. one deputy fired at least one shot at his car. he then drove across the street and hit another car before crashing down a small ravine and running into the woods. he was later arrested. one deputy was taken to the hospital far headache. a fundraiser is being held in honor of fallen bart police

sergeant tommy smith. he was killed in january during an apartment search when another detective mistook him for an armed suspect and shot him. an autopsy showed a single bullet missed his bullet proof vest and struck him in the chest. this morning a charity workout is being held at cross fit in union city. money raised will go to smith's family. the family of a 14-year-old redwood city girl who was hit and killed while riding her bike two years ago say they have resolved a wrongful death claim. layla ben was hit by a pickup truck while she was on her way to school. the driver stopped and cooperated. no charges were filed. bevin's rejected the police's findings and launched their own investigation. the terms of this settlement are confidential. two sisters accused of abusing baby wills stand trial. lee da and that psi lasha after are now facing felony child abuse charges. last march state investigators say they found some babies

wrapped so tightly that they were sweating and were hot to the touch. police say some of the babies had their faces covered by blankets. the sisters will have their next hearing on april 4th. tonight the pedestrian and bike path on the eastern span of the bay bridge will close for a week. crews plan to replace the temporary connector with a permanent one and will install a new gate and do paving and striping. that path is scheduled to close around 8 p.m. and reopen by 6 a.m. on march 31st. a new report says california's drought is putting a spotlight on water theft. according to the sacramento bee, the state has no way of monitoring who is tapping into the fresh water supplies. it also says that people who do get caught taking water are often allowed to keep taking it if they promise to get a permit. the report says some of the violators include illegal marijuana growers, farmers and homeowners who live in rural areas. shock and sadness as a teenager fights for her life. what we're learning about a deadly train accident north of sacramento and how the girl's boyfriend tried to save her.

three people have died and three others are fighting for their lives after a mud slide in washington state. it happened at about 10:45 yesterday morning about an hour outside of seattle. right now the mud slide is blocking a portion of state route 530 cutting off the people who live in the small town overdearington. authorities say the slide is 135 feet wide and 20 feet high. this morning the search continues for anyone who might be trapped under the debris. >> coming down here i just saw the darkness like somebody was

to grab you and everything was gone. like 3 seconds. >> officials say there is a potential for serious flooding downstream where part of the still ageorgia mental anguish ish river is blocked. what could turn out to be an oil spill, a barge carrying nearly a million gallons of fuel oil collided with a ship. the coast guard has not given an estimate of how much oil has leaked into galveston bay which is about 40 miles southeast of downtown houston. officials say a large amount has gone into the water. there is a concern for migratory birds who used the shoreline as a habitat. a new set of surveillance cameras will be test out for the holyoke massachusetts st. patrick's day parade. 80 surveillance cameras will be placed along the route. the police say they're testing out the cameras to see if police would like to use them.

the cameras have the ability to help police pinpoint the exact location of any gunfire. >> everything will be live. there will be better coverage. it will have additional resources out there to manage anything that happens to come up on the deck. >> last year three people were killed and more than 250 people injured in the boston marathon bombings. dzhokhar tsarnaev is now facing the death penalty for his involvement in the bombings. firefighters run into burning buildings. they pull people from smashed vehicles. they do what they have to to save lives. in massachusetts firefighters recently sang a different tune. reporter erika reji explains how they calmed the nerve of a 4-year-old girl. >> ♪ let it go. slam the door ♪ >> it's the theme song to the hit disney movie frozen, everyone knows it by heart. and that's why these redding

firefighters are singing it today. they sang that song to little caylin when she got stuck in the chair lift tight elevator with her mom kristin and baby brother jackson wednesday afternoon. >> i went to go push the door and nothing happened. that's when i was hitting the buttons and nothing happened. >> the door was jammed inside 580 main street in redding. the shaft isn't fully enclosed so the only way out was up a ladder and over a wall. >> when they put the ladder down that's when she kind of started freaking out. >> so firefighter john keogh started talking frozen with caylin and that triggered a thought. >> before i could even get the first words out, scott had his iphone out and started to play some music and that immediately made things calm for her, and the next thing you know we're singing a chorus or two. >> i don't like to admit to it but it gets kind of stuck in your head. >> joking aside, these guys say they'll do whatever it takes to relax the tension in a rescue. and as dads of young kids

well as along the coastline we're waking up with gray once again. i have to talk to livermore this morning. livermore valley mostly cloudy, so beginning to see that beautiful sunshine already this morning with sunrising about 10 minutes ago. this is the storm we're talking about, still several hundred miles offshore. it will make tracks towards the bay area. we will see some rain as early as tuesday morning for some of us. let me take a look at what we have going on this morning for you. there are the low clouds this morning. by 10, 11:00 it's backing up. it's moving out. i think it is going to linger along the coastline. we'll be once again with partly cloudy skies to mostly cloudy skies for parts of our coast. monday uneventful. we'll go right past monday. now we're here into tuesday morning and there's that possibility of the scattered showers pulling into the north bay. they will continue to develop and move through for tuesday afternoon. eventually all of us seeing some of that wet stuff. by wednesday morning you can see still hanging around, and i think scattered showers will continue for your wednesday and

future models showing the possibility of next weekend being wet as well. 47 degrees in santa rosa. low 50s in san francisco. 51 degrees in oakland for the running festival. it's a nice cool morning out there for those runners. 49 in san jose. for the second half of your day you will have temperatures back into the low 70s for the second half and we're looking at nice weather as we get into around lunchtime with temperatures already in the 60s around the bay area. for the afternoon today take a look at these numbers, 71 for novato. 69 in san rafael. 66 for sausalito. along the shoreline we've got 67 for alameda. upper 60s san leandro. low 70s for danville, and south bay 72, san jose, 74 for gilroy. 71 santa clara in and along the peninsula for today the afternoon going to feel quite nice at wood side. 72 for you. 69 san mateo, low 60s expected to mid-60s lock the coast.

the extented forecast, second half of your weekend in view, the morning clouds breaking away to mostly sunny skies for the second half. temperatures today a tad warmer than yesterday. warmer on monday. monday is expected to be the warmest day before we begin to see that big turn around. temperatures will fall and the rain will move in. upper 60s in the forecast for tuesday, mid-60s for our inland communities on wednesday and we'll leave in just a lingering chance on thursday with snow coming to the sierra as well. back to the desk. the san francisco opera is making dreams come true for hundreds of people this weekend by selling some of its costumes. >> so many capes. >> some people started lining up friday night so they could be first in line to search through all the tools, cig silk and busy. 175,000 costumes are up for sale at discount prices at a warehouse along indiana street. >> she died on her knees every

river. a marine biologist with the u.s. forest service says marine otters have been spotted in south lake tahoe and other areas. river otters have been returning to bay area waters. in the past two years the river otter ecology project has recorded about 600 otter sightings in the bay area. the state of arizona could soon allow tesla to do direct sales. arizona and four other states

have banned online only sales of the luxury electric car, but just last week a new bill passed through an arizona state committee that would allow the company to sell outside a dealer network. many car companies and dealers say they are unhappy with the bill. technology says it all comes down to money. >> an electric vehicle doesn't need upkeep whereas your traditional gas powered car needs oil changes, maintenance, transmission oil so that's a lot of lost recurring revenue for dealerships, and that's why they're fighting this. >> new jersey was the most recent state to place a direct sales ban on tesla. tesla is responding to those bans by calling them an insult to the free market. in oakland federal court, a man from japan has pleaded guilty to scamming more than half a million dollars from two american banks. prosecutors say 39-year-old watanabi defrauded bank of america and compass bank

between 2009 and 2013. he hired people to obtain debit cards from the banks. he then would use the cards to buy merchandise in japan that exceeded the balances in those bank accounts, and then he would resell the items for cash. he faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. a new drug delivery service is launching in san francisco's mission district, and it's causing quite a buzz. a company called quickie will soon be using drones to driver drugstore goods to your door. the 24 hour service will cost customers just $1 in addition the to the price of the ditheist order. once it has arrived it will alert your phone and with one swipe the drone will drop off your package and fly away. it's currently inviting people to sign up as beta testers. late night television host jimmy kimmel has a long way to go to challenge ellen degeneres. kimmel took this photo with former secretary of state hillary clinton, president bill clinton and their daughter

cloudy once again and those clouds are going to hang with with us just like yesterday, just for a couple of hours. then they're going to pull back and we'll be left with mostly sunny skies for your sunday as well. here's a look at the footprint you can see along the coastline, the peninsula this morning, and into the east bay and in the last half hour or so, i've watched it actually creep into areas right around the livermore valley. we had mostly sunny skies and now we're beginning to see the clouds sort of move in again. it will be with us just through the morning hours and it's going to pull back and we'll be left with mostly sunny, warmer conditions for the second half of your day. as i put this into motion it's about 10:00 or so. it moves through. we've got just a little still inside the bay. i think it will linger once again very close to the coast. partly cloudy to partly sunny skies expected for our coastline once again for your afternoon. temperatures right now 48 in areas like walnut creek. 44 in concord. into the north bay where it's a cool start. areas like santa rosa not as chilly. we shift just a little bit east we have 49 degrees in

pittsburgh. 43 in san ramon and 43 in lafayette. the afternoon highs for today, low 60s at the coast, low 70s for our inland communities. 75 in antioch. when i come back i'm going to show you the extended forecast, in which case things are going to get interesting. we have rain in the forecast for the bay area. more on that in just a bit. happening right now thousands of people are kicking off the oakland running festival. ktvu's katie utehs is live there in downtown oakland in the street where is it is just getting underway. hey katie. >> reporter: good morning mike. the starting just happened and the runners are on their way. if this hasn't woken you up already, look at this sea of neon. we are talking bright green, bright pink, a lot of bright orange, too. good morning here in oakland. there are nearly 10,000 runners out here today expected for the fifth annual oakland running festival. now the time to beat, these are the marathon runners. i'm told the time to beat is 2 and a half hours, just about the best time, and that was from 2012. there are some 300 plus

volunteers out here making this all happen, and there's also i tell you a large oakland police presence keeping this place safe because as you know, the boston marathon bombing has forever changed security at major events. >> security is tightened up at all kinds of events not just running events but stadium events as well. first of all clear bags is here to stay, and then of course we have a number of check points as well, so if somebody does try to carry a bag in, they will be stopped by security and they'll ask to check their bag. >> as a boston qualifier, yeah, i am very happy about the changes. >> it makes you feel safer. >> makes you feel a lot safer, yeah. >> and as you can see, we're talking about the oakland police presence. they have the tower out here. there are k-9 units as well, but altogether there is a festive feel. everybody is excited. everybody is pumped. there are going to be bands throughout the day. deejays along the route.

in malaysia are showing their support to the people on board flight 370. the group held a ride for prayer event to honor the passengers and crew on board. they even decorated their bikes with small malaysian flags and stickers that read pray for mh370. police in san jose are investigating the death of a woman who fell or jump from a 6 story garage at santana row. it's unclear whether the fall was accidental or not, but it happened while many people were arriving at the popular shopping area for an early dinner. the parking garage was shut down for several hours. richmond police are investigating two deadly shootings that happened two days apart. the first shooting happened thursday night near the corner of south 4th street and florida avenue. friday a man was shot near south 35th street and wall avenue. those shootings happened just after richmond police announced a decline in the city's crime rate. >> we're going to have crime just like everybody else is. we do the best that we can to fight that, and unfortunately

these two came within a couple days of each other. >> police are asking anyone with information to come forward. they are offering a $10,000 reward for each case if a tip leads to an arrest and conviction. we're finding out about a train accident in marysville that killed one teenager and seriously injured another. it happened at 7:00 friday night near a little league field. 16-year-old makayla friend was walking to a school dance with her boyfriend when the two were struck. they also say the boy pushed makayla out of the way of the train and saved her life. >> i can't imagine getting the worst call in your life knowing that you just dropped your sister off to go to a dance that was supposed to be a special amazing night for her and her boyfriend of a year and get a call that says, you know, he's deceased and she's in critical condition. >> grief counselors will be at the teen's school tomorrow. a candlelight vigil is scheduled for tuesday night for a mendocino county sheriff's deputy killed in an apparent ambush. 48-year-old deputy ricky

delferantino was gunned down by ricardo cheney wednesday. he graduated from napa high school and served 26 years in law enforcement. the vigil will be held at the fort bragg justice center at 8:00 tuesday night with a memorial service at the fort bragg cotton auditorium the next morning. a police k-9 who was shot while on duty last week in southern california is continuing to recover. 7-year-old bruno was shot in the lower jaw last thursday after he found a gunman hiding near a trash can. the bullet went through bruno's jaw and into his chest just 1 inch from his heart. police say the gunman continued to fire at officers before he was eventually shot and killed. the city of anaheim is paying for bruno's medical costs but once he retires those costs will shift to his handler. legal analysts say the marriages of hundreds of gay couples in michigan will not be recognized by the state. more than 300 gay couples

rushed to michigan courthouses yesterday morning to tie the knot and obtain a marriage license. on friday a federal judge ruled that michigan's ban was unconstitutional paving the way for same-sex weddings. >> it's such a long hard battle, but it is just a dream come true for us. >> there is a ton of love in the air. there are people from our neighborhoods that are here, like heterosexual couples here to support us. >> however, the weddings were stopped yesterday afternoon after michigan's attorney general intervened. marriage licenses will not be issued until at least wednesday while a federal appeals court considers michigan's emergency request to stop same-sex marriages. vice president joe biden says lawmakers should never legislate against gay marriages. >> the single most basic of all human rights is the right to decide who you love. it's the single basic building block. it is. >> biden spoke at a human rights event in los angeles last night. he was introduced by his wife. the vice president wants

congress to pass legislation outlawing workplace discrimination against gays. tomorrow night san leandro mayor stephen cassidy will prevent the state of the city address. he is expect today highlight local development projects such as transforming the city's industrial area into a center of innovation. he'll also discuss efforts to improve the quality of life in the city and will talk about bringing back the cherry festival at the end of may. cassidy's address will start at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the san leandro senior community center. march mad seasons in full swing. today the stanford's men's basketball team hopes to punch its ticket. they beat new mexico 58-53 on friday. this morning stanford tips off against the kansas jay hawks. the stanford women also dancing in this march madness, the second seeded cardinal opened up in ames iowa against south

firefighters are trying to find out what may have caused a fire at a southern california recycling plant. the fire started at 9:00 last night near 1st street and reservoir road. fire officials say bundles of plastic caught on fire but that the building itself didn't burn. it took nearly 80 firefighters to contain the flames. a hazmat team was also called to the scene but no one was hurt. legal analysts are expecting the oscar pistorius trial to be especially dramatic this week. the murder trial of the south african olympic runner enters its fourth week tomorrow. prosecutors are close to wrapping up their case. the defense will then take over and has already promised to call the paraplegic olympic athlete to the stand. it's uncertain if he'll take the stand first. a defense plans to call an expert that will testify that neighbors couldn't have possibly heard them arguing the night she was shot to death. researchers have come up

patients to the hospital and we had one patient that was dead on arrival. >> right now police say it is still not clear what caused the accident. if you've dealt with the dmv within the last seven months your credit card information may be compromised. a potential security breach at the california department of the motor vehicles prompted officials to issue a statement. in it it said there is no evidence of a "direct breach" but officials say there is a possible breach from external vendors who process dmv credit card transactions. the crebs on security web site reports it involves inonline payments for dmv related services. an aall right from mastercard indicates those transactions happened between august 2nd of last year and january 31st of this year and that the information compromised could include credit card numbers, expiration dates and the 3 digit security code printed on the back of cards. developing news on the search for missing malaysia airlines flight 370. the us a train australian air

oakland. the whom videotaped the side show says a red car smashed into the front of her white car. >> people are getting hurt from these side shows. and they need to realize that they need to do something different. >> oakland police say they don't have any records of that side show happening. san francisco police will hold a meeting to talk about a deadly police shooting a at park friday night. officers responded to a 9-1-1 call about a man with a gun at bernal heights park. more than one officer opened fire at the man after they say he pointed the weapon at them. police say two weapons were ultimately found at the scene. the officers involved are now on paid administrative leave. the santa clara county sheriff's office is investigating a deputy involved shooting. 42-year-old michael matagulay of san jose was arrested after he rammed into three patrol cars repeatedly in morgan hill yesterday morning. one deputy fired at least one shot at hiss car, and deputies say matagulay drove across the street and hit another car

before crashing down a small ravine. one deputy was taken to the hospital for a headache. a fundraiser is being held this morning in honor of a fallen bart police sergeant tom smith. smith was killed in january during an apparent apartment search when another detective mistook him for an armed suspect and shot him. an autopsy showed a single bullet missed his bullet proof vest and struck him in the chest. this morning a charity workout is being held at cross pit one world in union city. the money raised will go to smith's family. the family of a 14-year-old redwood city girl who was hit and killed while riding her bicycle two years ago says they have resolved the wrongful death claim. lay la labong was hit and killed in november 2012 while she was on her way to school. the driver topped and cooperated and no charges were filed. the girl's family rejected the police findings and launched its own investigation. the terms of the settlement are confidential. two sisters accused of abusing babies at their preschool in livermore will

stand trial. lida and nazila sharaf are now facing felony child abuse charges. last march state investigators say they found some babies wrapped so tightly that they were sweating and were hot to the touch. police say some of the babies even had their faces covered by blankets. the sisters will have their next hearing on april 4th. the walnut creek police department's traffic unit will soon be hitting the pavement. starting this spring, motorcycle officers will patrol neighborhoods to crack down on speeding drivers. the past two years the department has had to cut back on traffic enforcement because of decreased staffing. but this year the department is fully staffed with a total of 82 officers. the motor unit says they are excited to get back on the streets. starting tonight the pedestrian and bike path on the eastern span of the bay bridge will close for a week. crews plan to replace a temporary connector with a permanent one. they will also install a new gate and do paving and striping. the path is scheduled to close

around 8 p.m. and reopen by 6 a.m. on march 31st. a new report says california's drought is putting the spotlight on water theft. according to the sacramento bee, the state has no way of monitoring who is tapping into fresh water supplies. it also says people who do get caught taking water are often allowed to keep taking it if they promise to get a permit. the report says some of the violators include illegal marijuana growers, farmers and homeowners who live in rural areas. about 13,000 workers at university of california hospitals are scheduled to go on strike tomorrow. that strike is set to last for five days. patient care, technical workers those who perform mris and similar procedures voted overwhelmingly to authorize the strike. their union says uc administrators have engaged in infair labor practices by imposing a contract on the workers. workers are planning to hit the picket line at 7 a.m. at all uc hospitals in the state including san francisco and davis.

the plane. malaysia says france has satellite images of objects that could possibly be from the missing airliner. it went missing a little more than two weeks ago with 239 people on board. yesterday china released a satellite image of what appears to be a large floating object in the southern indiana ocean. more than 300 bicyclists in malaysia are showing their support to the people aboard flight 370 and their families. the group held a ride for prayer event to honor the people on board. they decorated their bikes with small malaysian flan restaurant flags and stickers. new this morning, police are investigating a deadly crash in san leandro. it happened just before 11:00 last night on east 14th and hayes streets. one person was killed and two people were rushed to the hospital after two cars slammed into each other right by the cvs pharmacy. the accident closed down part of east 14th street for a short time. right now it's still not clear what caused that accident. police in san jose are

investigating the death of a woman who fell or jumped from a 6 story garage at santana row yesterday afternoon. it's unclear whether the fall was accidental or not. it happened while many people were arriving at the popular strip for dinner. the parking garage was shut down for several hours. richmond police are investigating two deadly shootings. the first shooting happened thursday night near the corner of south 4th street and florida avenue. then on friday a man was shot near south 35th street and wall avenue. the shootings happened just after richmond police announced a decrease in the city's crime rate. >> we're going to have crime just like everybody else is. we do the best that we can to fight that, and unfortunately these two came within a couple days of each other. >> police are asking anyone with information to come forward because they're offering a $10,000 reward for each case if a tip leads to an arrest and conviction. at least for now, legal analysts say the marriages of

was shot and killed. the city of anaheim is paying for bruno's medical costs. we are finding out more about a train accident in marysville that killed one teenager and seriously injured another. it happened about 7:00 friday night near a little league field. 16-year-old makayla friend was walking to a school dance with her boyfriend when the two were hit. the boyfriend pushed makayla out of the way of the train and saved her life. >> can't imagine getting the worse call of your life knowing you dropped your sister off to go to a dance and it was supposed to be a special amazing night for her and her boyfriend of a year and get a call that says, you know, he's deceased and she's in critical condition. >> grief counselors will be at the teen's school tomorrow. happening now, the oakland running festival is underway. event organizers say they have more runners now than ever before. ktvu channel 2 reporter katie utehs is live at the finish line and tells us it's a very

witnesses say they sang the national ukranian anthem, lowered the flag and left. russian armored personnel carriers broke through the gates at a secondary base. russian special forces fired warning shots in the air and detained ukranian troops. another volatile region of the world is the korean peninsula. north korea law firmed short range rockets into the sea off its east coast. it's believed they're using the rockets to protest american south korean military drills. president obama is heading to the netherlands for a nuclear security summit held every two years. south korea hosted the event back in 2012. on the agenda this week includes iran's nuclear program. overshadowing the summit is the situation in ukraine. the president will meet with leaders from seven world powers including germany, england and japan to discuss o'options in dealing with russia. those country haves already suspended preparations for an economic meeting that is scheduled in sochi russia later this year. on thursday the president will visit pope francis at

vatican city. the two men will discuss poverty across the world. this will be the second time president obama will meet the pope. back in 2009 the commander in chief spent time with pope benedict the xvi. anheuser busch and union representatives have reached a tentative deal. the company and international brotherhood of teamsters say they are focused on finalizing the language of that contract. once that is finished the deal will be up for ratification by union members. anheuser busch is based in st. louis and has 12 breweries in the u.s. ski season is starting to come to an end in the sierra. at 4:00 today homewood ski resort in tahoe will close for the season. the resort says it's just forced to shut down because of the lack of snow. many other resorts will remain open though for another few weeks. they've been using snow making machines so skiers and snow boarders can enjoy the slopes in the springtime weather. >> do you remember a couple of years ago some of those resorts were open through memorial day in may.

on tuesday morning, and you can see just that green hitting the north edge of the north bay. i think tuesday morning we are going to be with a dry commute as we get out the door. but as the day progresses, so does the rain. take a look by about noontime, 1:00, it's now shifting all the way into the central bay. for the morning hours the north bay begins to see that rain. by the afternoon we're seeing it over the central bay and by 3:00 or so moving into the south bay. i'm going to roll this for about a 24 hour period tuesday morning into wednesday morning and here's a look at some of the accumulations expected for the area. most urban areas picking up a quarter inch or so, maybe a little bit more in oakland. this is just a model here, and so it is going to change over the next couple of days. as you look farther north, perhaps half inch for some of our wetter spots, maybe our coastal hills picking up good rain. we know the deficit is very wide. we're talking several inches below average. it's not going to help make up for all that, but at least it's anding. right now at this hour outside our doors the partly cloudy skies, 46 degrees in santa rosa, 50 in san francisco, mid-

has been signed to protect and preserve mount tam tamalpais. the county of marin and the golden gate parks conservancy for the tamalpais land collaborative. with the five groups on board, mount tam has access to more volunteers and more money. the agreement was signed friday afternoon at a ceremony in tiberon. oakland residents are coming together as part of a community effort to clean up the city's neighborhoods. >> members of the long shoreman's union joined other volunteers to trim trees, pick up garbage and clean up graffiti graffiti. these clean up days reinforce a sense of community. >> what's beautiful about these community gatherings, it really gives neighbors the opportunity to know each other and realize that they're not alone in their desire to see a clean, healthy safe oakland. >> yesterday's clean up was part of the my oakland is

firefighters are trying to find out what may have caused a fire at a southern california recycling plant the the fire started at 9:00 last night near 1st street and reservoir road. bundles of plastic caught on fire but that the building itself did not burn. it took about 80 firefighters to contain the flames. the hazmat team was called to the scene. no one was hurt. legal analysts predict the oscar pistorius trial could be explosive. the murder trial enters its fourth week tomorrow. prosecutors are close to wrapping up their case. the defense will then take over and as already promised to call the paraplegic public athlete to the stand. it is uncertain if he will take the stand first or testify at the end of the trial. the defense plans to call experts who will testify that neighbors could not have

ktvu live in downtown oakland with all the action. hey, katie. >> reporter: good morning, mike. it has been nonstop action out hear. the 5k awards are underway. the half marathon runners are starting to line up. they are packed in there. we found some folks geared up for the half marathon, and one of the run theres was actually going to be her first marathon. she's just a little nervous. >> my heart is beating a million miles a minute. i'm so nervous. >> reporter: you're excited. >> yes. >> reporter: the half marathon starts in about 15 minutes. you are looking at a special group of runners. these are wheelchair runners, team will, and team ari. they will start with specially fitted wheelchairs made for rung. the half marathon is the largest group. more than 4,000 runers will be

two cars slammed into each other bey the cvs pharmacy. the accident closed down part of east 14th street for a short time during the investigation. >> we transported two patients to the hospital, and we had one patient that was dead on arrival. >> right now police say it's still not clear what caused the accident. >> if you have dealt with the dmv within the last seven months your credit card information may be compromised. a potential security breach at the california department of motor vehicles prompted officials yesterday to issue a statement. in it, it said there is no evidence of a, quote, direct breach, but officials say there is a possible breach from external vendors who process dmv credit card transactions. the website reports the potential breach involves on- line payments for dmv related services. an alert from mastercard indicates those transactions happened between august 2nd of last year and january 31st of this year, and that the information compromised includes credit card numbers,

expiration dates, and that three-digit security code printed on the back of your card. developing news on the search for missing malaysian airlines flight 370. the australian air force says another day of search hag come to an end with no sign of the jetliner. meanwhile malaysia says france has satellite images of objects that could possibly be from the missing jetliner. it went missing more than two weeks ago with 239 people on board. yesterday china released a satellite image of what appears to be a large floating object in the southern indian ocean. >> it is the most promising lead that's available internationally, but there are any number of other explanations about what might have been sighted as a result of this satellite imagery. >> search planes and ships have also been trying to find a pallet that was spotted from the air. wooden pallets are commonly used in shipping but can also be used in planes. an oakland woman says a

woman crashed right into her car during an illegal side show. she says the side show happened early yesterday morning at 106th avenue and macarthur. the woman who videotaped the side show said the red car smashed into the side of the white car. >> people are getting hurt from these side shows, and they need to realize that they need to do something different. >> police say they did not make any arrests during that said show. san francisco police will hold a meeting to talk about a deadly police shooting friday night. officers responded to a 911 call about a man with a gun. investigators say more than one officer opened fire at the machine after they say he pointed the weapon at them. police say two weapons were found at that time scene. the officers involved are now on paid administrative leave. the santa clara sheriff's office investigating a deputy- involved shooting. a man was arrested after officials say he rammed into three patrol cars repeatedly

yesterday morning. one deputy fired at least one shot at his vehicle. deputies say he then drove across the street and hit another car before crashing down a small ravine. he was later found and arrested. one deputy was taken to the hospital. the suspect was not hurt. a fund-raiser is being held in honor of fallen bart police officer tommy smith. he was killed during an apartment search when another detective mistook him for an armed suspect and shot him. an autopsy showed a single bullet missed his bulletproof vest and struck him in the chest. this morning a charity workout is being held. money raised will go to smith's family. the family of a 14-year-old redwood city girl who was hit and killed while riding her bike say they have resolved a wrongful death claim. she was killed on her way to school. the driver stopped and cooperated and no charges were

filed. the girl's family rejected the police findings and launched their own investigation. two sisters accused of using babies at their preschool in livermore will stand trial. the former owners of the preschool are now facing charges. last month investigators say they found some babies wrapped so tightly that they were sweating and were too hot to the touch. police say some of the babies even had their faces covered by blankets. the sisters will have their next hearing on april 4th. the police department's motorcycle traffic team in walnut creek will soon be hitting the pavement. starting this spring motorcycle officers will patrol neighborhoods in order to crack down on speeding drivers. the past two years the department has had to cut back on traffic enforcement because of decreased staffing. but this year the department is fully staffed with a total of 82 officers. the motor unit says they are excited to get back on the streets. starting tonight the pedestrian and bike path on the eastern span of the bay bridge

will close for a week. crews plan to replace a temporary connector with a permanent one, and they locals install a new gate and do some paving and striping. the path is scheduled to close around 8:00 p.m. and reopen by 6:00 a.m. march 31st. a new report says california's drought is putting a spotlight on water theft. according to the sacramento bee the state has no way of monitor whewing is tapping into fresh water supplies. it also says people who do get caught taking water are often allowed to keep taking it if they promise to get a permit. the report says some of the violators include illegal marijuana growers, farmers, and some home owners who live in rural areas. about 13,000 workers at university of california hospitals are scheduled to go on strike tomorrow. the strike is set to last for five days. patient care and technical workers, those what perform mri's and similar procedures, voted overwhelmingly to authorize the strike there. ' union says uc administrators have engaged in unfair practices. workers are planning to hit the

blocking a portion of a road, cutting off the people who live in the small town of darrington. authorities say the slide is 135 feet wide and 20 feet high. this morning the search continues for anyone who might be trapped under the debris. >> i was coming down the hill, i just saw the darkness, like somebody wants to grab you, and everything was gone, like three seconds. >> officials say there is a potential for serious flooding downstream where part of the river is blocked. they are urging people who live in that area to evacuate. response crews are trying to clean up what could turn out to be a massive oil spill in the waters near houston, texas. a barge carrying nearly a million gallons of oil collided with a ship. the coast guard has not given an estimate of how much fuel has leaked into galveston barks which is about 40 miles southeast of downtown houston. but officials say a large amount has gone into the water. there is a concern for

thursday night near the corner of south fourth street and florida avenue. friday a man was shot near south 35th and wall avenue. those shootings happened just after richmond police announced a decrease in the city's crime rate. >> we're going to have crime just like everybody else. we do the best that we can to fight. that unfortunately these two came within a couple of days of each other. >> police are asking anyone with information to come forward. they are offering a $10,000 reward for each case if a tip leads to an arrest and conviction. >> at least for now legal analysts say the marriages of hundreds of gay couples in michigan will not be recognized by the state. more than 300 gay couples rushed to michigan courthouses yesterday morning to tie the knot and obtain a marriage license. on friday a federal judge had ruled that michigan's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional, paving the way for same-sex weddings. >> it's been such a long, hard battle, but it has been a dream come true for us.

what's happening, katie? >> reporter: mike, the two-time olympic gold medalist jim hines tells me what he's most excited about is the kids fun run. he says this is the future of the sport, and he is so excited to see it happening here in his hometown. i have to tell you the half marathon kicked off a few moments ago. running that half marathon, our own ktvu ken wayne made a surprise appearance as he ran by. let me show you the start of that race. the half marathon is the largest group of runners out here today, about 4,000 people partake in that. we spoke with two-time olympic gold medalist jim hines. he broke records becoming the first person to better 0 seconds for the 10 meter race. as an oakland native he's really excited to see the running festival grow. >> oh, yeah to help something

a party at the end of this race. live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. in other news a candlelight vigil is scheduled for tuesday night for a deputy killed in an am bush. investigators say 48-year-old deputy was gunned down bey a fugitive last wednesday near fort bragg. the deputy graduated from napa high school and served 26 years in law enforcement. the vigil will be held at 8:00 tuesday night with a memorial service at the fort bragg cotton auditorium the next morning. a police canine who was shot while on duty last week in southern california is continuing to recover. seven-year-old bruno was shot in the lower jaw last thursday after he found a gunman hiding near a trash can. the bullet went through bruno's jaw and into his chest, just one inch from his heart. police say the gunman continued to fire at officers before he was eventually shot and killed. the city of anaheim is paying for bruno's medical costs but once he retires those costs

estuary, perhaps heading towards the east where we are continuing to see those clouds break up and the sunshine will be pouring in for the afternoon. we'll be partly cloudy along the coastline. but again, beginning to see those low clouds erode as we speak. as we speak we do after storm on the approach there. it is several hundred miles out over the pacific. but it is making trek towards the bay area. it won't get us today, it won't get us tomorrow, but by tuesday morning we'll begin to see that rain move in. think the morning drive is going to be dry. this shows us how much rain we can expect to see. it is also going to give us a bit of a tame line. 9:00 a.m., the green still to the north. by 10, 11:00, it is moving to the north bay. by the lunch hour, 1:00 or so it is crossing over into the south central bay, along the east bay, as well as the peninsula, down the san mateo county coastline. as we get into 3:00 or so it's into the south bay. this storm could slow down a bit. it could speed up just a bit. but here is the timeline of

what we're looking at for tuesday. showers developing over the course of the morning and early afternoon. then i'm going to runt through to wednesday morning and show that you from tuesday morning into wednesday morning we could pick up quarter inch or so maybe a little bit more in some areas, and then the farther north we go the bet tear opportunity of picking up more than that, perhaps even a half inch to maybe an inch for our coastal hills. so we will be keeping an eye on that but that's tuesday into wednesday. for today a slightly warmer afternoon with patchy fog expected at the coastline, and that ridge of high pressure will be locked in for today as well as tomorrow. 47 degrees right now outside. concord, san jose 50 degrees. for the afternoon today, quite nice. 73 expected for sonoma, 66 in sausalito. to the east bay, temperatures in up ther 60s in areas like oakland, san leandro and hayward. low 70s for walnut creek, mid- 70s for antioch. it is going to be splendid.

firefighters are trying to find out what may have caused this fire at a southern california recycling plant. the fire started about 9:00 last night in pomona.

fire officials say bundles of plastic caught fire but that the building itself did not burn. it took nearly 80 firefighters to contain this one. a hazmat team was called to the scene. no one was hurt. legal analysts predict the oscar pistorius trial could be explosive this week. the murder trial of the south african olympic runner enters its fourth week tomorrow. prosecutors are close to wrapping up their case. the defense will then take over and has already promised to call the olympic athlete to the stand. now, it is uncertain if he will take the stand first or testify at the end of the trial. the defense plans to call experts who will testify that neighbors could not have possibly heard pistorius and his girlfriend arguing the night that she was shot to death. medical researchers say they have come up with a drug that is 100 times more powerful than morphine. the drug comes from the venom of ocean dwelling snails. so far researchers have only tested the drug on rats so the side effects on humans are unclear. a test on humans is at least
