"mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." here is a live look at fremont boulevard and dakota and fremont. that intersection has been shut down for nearly six hours after a deadly crash. ktvu's tara moriarty has been on the scene all morning long and she'll have more on what police say caused the crash and when this busy intersection may open again. sal's gonna join us in a minute for alternates for traffic. it's tuesday, march 25th. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather, steven, grab and umbrella, right? >> that's right. rain is moving across the

sonoma county. willits valley coming down good. that's a good thing. we need the rain, as you know. the system is marching. it has a ways to go before the rain comes in locally. we've had clear aarea -- clear areas. look for cloudy skies around noon and the rain me gins. that will be sooner to the north and there could be sunbreaks later this afternoon as we get the system to come by. it looks like it's slowing down a little bit. it's on its way. a lot of cloud cover beginning to move in. you can see the rain beginning to show up as well. still offshore, right there. the radar beam is picking umg on the mendocino/sonoma coast. not just one system. there's more on the way. especially on wednesday, main early thursday. once we get the first system, new york the ridge out -- first some, knock the ridge out of the way. if you need to do anything, do

it early. rain will move in late morning/early afternoon. clouds are increasing. a winter storm warning. that doesn't begin until 3:00. it will be cooler for all today. 50s, 60s for most with a south breeze near 70. morgan hill gilroy. here's sal. we have a look at the commute. it's busy as we get to the peek of the morning drive. if you are driving on 880 northbound and southbound, it's not stop and go but you will see crowding between the coliseum area of oakland and downtown. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, it's not as bad as it was yesterday. this is about a 25-minute drive time. better than normal but there's waiting going on before you make it on the span. on fremont's freeways, hayward to fremont, the traffic is busy from 238 as you head on down to dakota road. there are no major problems after that. the fremont intersection remains shut down after a fatal

crash earlier this morning. ktvu's tara moriarty is live at the scene where a motorcyclist was killed by an allegeled drunk driver. tara? >> reporter: yeah. the officials are not saying exactly how fast the driver was going. it must have been pretty fast because the intersection where it happened was right here but where the motorcycle ended up is back here where the police officers are near the back of that stop sign and then the body we're told is still on scene right behind the bushes near that bank sign. the crash happened at about 1:15 this morning at dakota and fremont where you can see debris strewn all over the roadway. the motorcyclist was thrown and died immediately. officials say that minutes before the driver of a mini cooper was a nearby fast-food place when a worker noticed something was off and decided to call 911. >> at about 1:10 a.m., we received a call into our dispatch center from an employee at taco bell and taco

bell is located south of this area on fremont boulevard, about a mile down the road. and the employee at taco bell said we have a patron in our drive-thru, he's very belligerent, appears intoxicated. >> authorities did not see the motorcyclist at first, but two pointed out that a body was lying on the side of the road. police followed the suspect who slammed into a utility pole, his car bursting into flames. he ran off into a field but was caught, he's undergoing toxicology tests and is being booked for dui. no word on the victim's name. the suspect's name, aches exander yawn -- alexander yawn. police say they expect this intersection at dakota and fremont to be shut down at least past the 9:00 hour. this is obviously, you know, the commute rush hour. so do expect delays around the area. if you can, definitely avoid it

at all costs and try some side streets. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:06. police in richmond investigating a shooting last night that left a man critically injured. the man in his 20s was found on main avenue near boreman park. he had been shot several times. now, police say a dark car was seen speeding away from the scene. this shooting follows two homicides in richmond last thursday and friday. now, on thursday, a 43-year-old woman was killed at 4th street and florida avenue. 24 hours later, the man was killed at south 35th street and wall avenue. dark colored cars seen leaving the scene. police don't believe the polices are related. the investigation continues. b.a.r.t. riders in richmond have been robbed at gunpoint. ktvu's alex savidge is at the richmond station now with more on the specific passengers that are being targeted a what

police are doing today. >> reporter: good morning to you. later on today, officers will be handing out fliers to b.a.r.t. riders, warning them to stay aheart. the message from police, take your eyes off the phone or tablet as you are walking to and from the station to avoid becoming a victim. police are seeing a surge in oldups recently in and around the station. the victims are being followed in many cases from the richmond station and then held up at gunpoint. once they get a few blocks away. richmond police say they've taken 18 robbery reports in this area in just the last two and a half months. the robbers seem to be focusing in on commuters who are distracted with the mobile devices. it's also people who may be listening to headphone as the time. >> robbers prey on people they feel are vulnerable. if you are not paying attention that makes you ultimately vulnerable. >> reporter: in all of these recent cases, the robbers have

been young men and working in small groups of two or three people. police say they are getting away with cell phones, credit cards, cash and jewelry. and many of the victims have been spanish speaking. that's part of the reasons that police officers will be passing out fliers in english and spanish. both richmond and b.a.r.t. place will be working together, passing out fliers warning commuters about the recent spike in robberies. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, alex. china is now demanding that malaysia turn over satellite data used to conclude that flight 370 was lost in the southern indian ocean with no survivors. today, search planes were grounded and ships were pulled out of the area because of bad weather. the search area is focused in the southern indian ocean a vast area, some of the most treacherous waters on earth, covering more than 600,000

square miles. that's huge. it's still 20% of the area being searched. coming up at 7:45, ktvu's pam cook will have more on the offer from australia to family members of passengers and the protests by those who want prove from the government that their loved ones are dead. the frantic search continues in washington state for survivors of a deadly landslide. 14 people are now confirmed dead. at least 176 more are still unaccounted for. coming up at 7:15, a live report on what rescue crews say is complicating the search efforts. 7:10. another storm is on the way bringing rain back here to the bay area. you just heard steve paulson, he expects between .3 to .5 in the bay area today. that's not enough to have a big impact on our drought. the forecasters say it may ease some of the problems. the rain is not expected until later this morning.

welcome back. 7:15. the investigation goes on at a navy base in norfolk, virginia into a deadly shooting. base officials say a sailor was shot and killed on board the u.s.s. mahan. the shooter described as a civilian was later killed by naval base security. it's not clear yet if the shooter had permission to be on that ship. the naval base, which is the largest installation in the world, was put on lockdown for a while but it has now returned to regular operations. back here at home, san

francisco police will hold a town hall meeting tonight. they will talk about a deadly officer-involved shooting. the meeting comes after family members and friends of the man killed in that shooting met last night for a candlelight vigil at bernal heights park. that's where police officers shot and killed 28-year-old alejandra nieta. police say they were forced to shoot after he pointed a gun at them. but friends say they don't believe nieto was carrying a weapon. the meeting is at 6:00 at the leonard flynn school. the death toll has risen to 14 three days after a massive landslide and the list of people unaccounted for is still over 150. our reporter is live in snohomish county, washington, where crews are still in rescue mode this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to

you. search teams are using dogs, sonar and helicopters to find those who are still missing. but the mud is just so thick. 15 feet deep in some areas and no one has been pulled from that rubble alive since saturday. >> this is a full-scale rescue effort. >> reporter: more than 100 emergency responders are scouring the vast debris field left after saturday's landslide looking for any signs of life. the wall of trees, rocks and debris swept through a rural community northeast of seattle costing lives and wiping out homes. fire officials say getting around is a huge challenge. >> sometimes it takes five minutes to walk 40, 50 feet and get our equipment over the berms. >> reporter: amid the grim scenes, there are bright spots. this 4-year-old boy was stuck

in the mud. >> mud compacted around him. he couldn't move. >> reporter: crews managed to pull him out and get him to the hospital. volunteers are organizing donated food for those hardest hit in this close-knit community. >> it's really tough. every time i hear a name, i know that person. maybe not very well. i know who they are. i know who their family is. >> reporter: president obama declared and emergency as fema's supplies and equipment began to arrive on monday. flood something a problem and water is spilling over banks and into homes. and because of that threat, tori, this is the closest we can get from the perimeter. officials here say this is a very unsafe area, still mainly, they are worried about the potential for an additionallandslide especially because the forecast is for rain all day and the rain has just started. back to you. >> thank you. the red cross in silicon valley

is sending three volunteers to washington to help with the relief efeither. more than a -- relief effort. more than a dozen firefighters are responding to the disaster area. the firefighters are trained in search and rescue operations and will help move the huge amount of rubble to try to find more victims. just a heartbreaking scene up there. we're gonna turn to sal. you are watching a lot of different things, the roads and the bridges. >> we're looking at the commute. this morning's commute will be busy especially on highway 4 coming out of pittsburg and getting up to the willow pass grade. there aren't any major problems associated with this. it's slow traffic. the morning commute is backed up at the bay bridge. this is a 20-minute drive time most of the time is on the bridge. just got some new news from tara at dakota and fremont, she

told me that dakota at fremont is likely to be closed until noon, according to police, as they continue this investigation of a deadly crash. one thing we want to let you know, this is not affecting the freeway traffic. it's always slow from hayward to fremont. this morning something no exception. it gets better after stevens boulevard. let's go to steve. in if you are up in mendocino county, .25 some reports. jim up in eureka said it looks like the system has gone through. well, it has. kind of. there's still cloud cover but there's been heavy rain to the north. our system is a two-pronger. we're getting some of the cloud cover. the rain line is back here. we have a ways to go. i've been saying around the noon hour. but the morning should be just fine.

fuel. the big rig driver was not hurt. today, investigators in chicago will be back at the scene of a commuter train derailment at one of the nation's busiest airports where more than 30 people were hurt. the train jumped the tracks at 3:00 a.m. yesterday, flew onto the platform and went up the escalator. a union still has said the train operator may have dosed off at the time of the accident because she had worked extensive overtime recently and was extremely tired. but investigators say things could have been a lot worse if it had happened later in the morning when the platform would have been packed with people. 7:26. the mayor of new york calls this the number one terror target in the world. but now three men are talking about how easy it was to walk up and base jump off the new world trade center tower. >> ready? >> yes. >> okay, brother. >> want to try that, tori?

>> no way. >> september 30th, 3:00 this morning. wow. yesterday, the three men turned themselves into police. an accomplice who was the lookout surrendered. their lawyer says they snuck in through a hole in a fence at the construction site. officials in berkeley are expressing their opposition to a plan to transport crude oil on train tracks in the east bay and the south bay. the contra costa times reports the phillip 66 oil company has proposed using amtrak train tracks for crude oil shipments. but berkeley officials say the transports would pass through highly populated areas and that could put communities from benicia to san jose at risk of an explosion like the one that killed 47 people in quebec last july. 7:27. a teenager caught in the crossfire while walking home from school. how witnesses jumped into action when a 14-year-old boy was shot. >> reporter: we're thrive in san carlos where the driver of a pickup truck crashes into a

lost control. sheriff deputies will be investigating that. we understand the driver and no residents were injured as a result of this. at the high of the outage, more than 1200 customers were without power. pg&e crews worked as fast as they could to reroute power to customers affected. at this point, about 100 customers are still without power this morning. we spoke with one woman who lives right across the street from where the pole went down. >> i looked through the window. i couldn't see anything but the light pole down and transformer hanging. i said oh, my god. i called 911 immediately. >> reporter: now, as a result, many residents, as you can imagine here in san carlos, will be inconvenienced today. originally, pg&e estimated power to be fully restored around 8:00 or 8:15 this morning. but i just got off the phone with them about 20 minutes ago. now it looks like they will be here all day. power will be restored to those remaining customers about 100

or so sometime this afternoon, has they couldn't give a more accurate estimate. back out here live, you can see pg&e crews still working to it looks like pour sand out there as well as restoring the power pole. we also saw a sheriff's deputy here. many residents without power and they will be without electricity for most of the day. sometime around 5:00 is when pg&e estimates probably when power will be fully restored. in terms of road clesh ures, melody between heather -- closures, melody between heather will be closed. back to you. >> thank you. 7:36. san francisco police still searching for suspects in a shooting that injured eight people in the tenderloin neighborhood over the weekend. ktvu news obtained exclusive video of the gunfire sunday night. you see a sedan pulling up to turk and taylor. a man in a white t-shirt and dark sweatpants gets out of the

car, walks into the crowd, then he starts shooting before jumping back into the car. now, you can see people falling to the ground, diving for cover. police say the shooting came after the gunmen argued with another man over a debt of less than $50. 7:36. a smartphone played a big role in a tense s.w.a.t. standoff in palo alto. it all began when two burglars broke into a woman's home yesterday evening. janine de la vega has been talking to police and neighbors and joins us now live. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. police are stepping up patrols in this neighborhood after this incident happened. neighbors who live here say that crime doesn't really happen in this area. this is the midtown area of palo alto. some of the people here have video cameras on their home and police hope that evidence will help them in this case. this all started at 6:30 last night. a woman in her 30s returned home with her baby and another relative and noticed the rear door had been forced open. she heard a door slam.

they ran outside and called 911 to report burglars in the home. police arrived on scene and determined the suspects were inside. police say they were able to see the suspects in the house because the woman was able to view cameras in her home through an app on her phone. the s.w.a.t. team were called. avfive hours, the police entered the home and determined the suspects were no longer there. >> i see there's suspicious activity going down. >> reporter: well, the suspects ransacked the house and piled up valuables. it's unknown what they took. officers realize the surveillance camera was not a live feed. they believe the suspects broke in between 5:45 and 6:26 yesterday evening. police will be reviewing the surveillance video to she if it's good enough to release to the public in hopes that they

can help identify these burglars. reporting live from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:38. a 14-year-old boy recovering after being shot in the arm while walking home from school in antioch. police say it happened yesterday afternoon on sycamore street. they say a man walking on the same street fired shots at a fire driving by. one of the bullets wounded the 14-year-old boy. people who live nearby heard the gunfire and ran out to help the boy. >> i seen him walk by practically every day coming back home from school. he always by himself with his muse nick his ears. you see him walking -- music in his ears. you see him walking. he don't mess with anyone. >> the gunman is described as african-american between 18 and 20 years old. about 5'10" to 6'2". he has black braided hair. the car he was shooting at was described as a mall dark

compact car. the wounded boy spent a couple of hours at the hospital before going home with his family. more than a dozen suspected gang members are behind bars this morning after a year-long investigation on the peninsula. it was called "operation sunny day." authorities say that's because the suspects would say "it's a sunny day in east palo alto" when their kills wag successful. 16 people -- was success f 16 people were -- was successful. 16 people were arrested. in washington, d.c., the supreme court is hearing arguments on the birth control mandate in the new healthcare law. demonstrators on both sides of the issue gathered outside the supreme court it looks like they are in a lot of rain as well. we have a reporter there where the arguments, they are expected to wrap up in about an hour from now. now, coming up at 8:15, we'll tell you why some companies say they should be exempt from the new law and the types of birth

control they say they would be willing to cover. 7:40. the redwood city council has denied an appeal of plans to redevelop pete's harbor. the decision came after council members praised plans for a 402- unit waterfront development on the harbor. the project calls for apartment buildings three to five-stories tall, marina, swimming pool and clubhouse. opponents of the project had been fighting to stop evictions for people who lived on house boats in the marina. san francisco may become the first city in the nation to tax soda. last night, scott wiener and eric mahr joined local physicians at a town hall meeting. they are sprying to build support for the 2 cents per ounce tax on soda and other sugary drinks. they say it's a promising way to fight obesity and diabetes. >> you can still buy whatever drinks you want to buy. but when you have a drink like

>> trying to. we see some slow traffic on 680 southbound getting out of the walnut creek area and heading down to danville. it's not as bad as it usually is, though. sometimes we see the traffic that slows in pleasant hill and it stays that way until san ramon. as we go out to the westbound bay bridge, that traffic is backed up for about a 35 to 40- minute drive time between oakland and san francisco. also this morning's commute in oakland has been slow. northbound. very slow from about 238 all the way up into downtown oakland. we don't see a reason for that. 580 is the best bet. it slows at 13 on the way to the lakeshore curve. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very good morning. mostly cloudy now. it was clear here for a while. in fact, still might be some sun east and south. clouds continue to roll in. rain has been up in the north up in mendocino county and starting in cazadero.

the key is cold air and good jet stream support. clouds on the increase. rain developing. not too much for some. a little heavier to the north. the breeze showing signs of picking up. it will be cooler with 50s and 60s. here's sal. steve, we we've spotted something on the willow pass grade. we just spotted it. it looks like it's a crash between a minivan and another vehicle. eastbound highway 4 has come to a dead stop as the chp has pulled up on the scene. it looks like there's something in the lanes. but they are trying to get this out of the way. you can see that traffic is at a standstill on highway 4 coming up the baypoint, coming ut 0 of concord, eastbound highway 4. this is an unexpected delay. these are the kind of delays that really get to you. if you are driving eastbound toward antioch, you are not expecting it at all. you expect westbound to be slow

westbound will be slow as joe pushes off to the left. you can see traffic is definitely slowing down looking at this. we'll keep an eye on it for you. let's take a look at westbound bay bridge. it's about a 30-minute drive time into san francisco. if you are driving in the east bay, the slowest freeway is 880. it's backed up to hayward all the way down to oakland. 580 is getting much busier coming out of san leandro as we make your way towards the oakland hills. we do have trouble in fremont. freemont intersection remains shut down after a fatal crash earlier this morning. ktvu's tara moriarty is live at the scene where a motorcyclist was killed by an alleged drunk driver. tara? >> reporter: we're at the corner here of decoto as well as fremont boulevard and now police are saying that this intersection won't be reopened until after noon and that's because there's so much debris. you can see how many markers there are on the roadway. the collision happened in the intersection but the body of

the motorcyclist is behind the bushes near the bank sign. the motorcycle is down near the stop sign and the car is where it smashed into the pole. this all happened about 1:15 at decoto and fremont where you can see the debris is all over the roadway. the motorist was thrown and died immediately. investigators say that minutes before the driver of a mini cooper was at a nearby fast food place when a worker noticed that he appeared drunk and decided to call 911. the driver then smashed into the motorcyclist a mile away and kept driving. >> the vehicle collided with the utility pole caught on fire. the suspect got out of the vehicle and took off on foot into a field. >> reporter: officers didn't see the motorcyclist at first but two passersby pointed out that a body was lying on the

from the scene. the shooting follows two homicides last thursday and friday. on thursday, a 43-year-old woman was killed at 4th street and florida avenue. 24 hours later, a man was killed at south 35th street and wall avenue. dark colored cars were seen leaving the scene of both of those deadly scenes. police do not believe they are related. they are still investigating. there's a warning this morning in richmond for b.a.r.t. riders because of a recent surge in armed robberies. alex savidge is live at the richmond station. alex, some people are making themselves vulnerable. >> reporter: good morning. armed robberies on the rise in this area and police say in many cases people are distracted by their smart phones as they are walking away from the itch aremond b.a.r.t. station. that's part of the reason the warn something going out to commuters. victims are being followed in many cases as they leave the

station and then held up a few blocks away. that's why later on today, officers will be happening out fliers at the richmond station. richmond police says they've taken 18 reports. the robbers seem to be targeting commuters distracted by their mobile devices. oftentimes they are disstrarblthed listening to -- distracted listening to headphones as well. some b.a.r.t. drivers admit they get distracted. >> i see the same thing, putting their headphones on or they are just focused on their phone. i see a lot of people doing it. i'm gonna stop doing it. >> reporter: in these recent case, the robbers have been young men working in small groups of two or three. police say they are stealing cell phone, credit cards and cash and many of the victims have been spanish-speaking. that's why officers will be passing out fliers in spanish and english tad.

the bay bridge, this commute is a 35, 40-minute delay. haven't had anything major on the span. most of the waiting time is at the toll plaza. san mateo bridge has been stop and go. it picks up again. it slows down heading out to the high rise. about a 10, 15-minute delay. you will have to deal with wet weather later today and for sure tomorrow. so put that into the back of your head. if you don't like to drive in the rain, you might want to consider using public transportation. westbound 50 slow getting into -- 580 slow getting in. decoto road and fremont remains blocked for police investigation. more than 100 people still have no power in san carlos after a truck slammed into a power pole early this morning. brian flores is live at the scene. >> reporter: i wish i had

better news. but there's still a lot of work to do. power expected to be fully restored sometime this afternoon. that's the very latest from pg&e. as you can see behind me, as we approach the later morning here, you are getting a better view of the truck that hit the power pole this morning. we're on the 3400 block of melody drive. the truck knocked out power to hundreds of people who live here. it's still here. according to pg&e, again, still a lot of work to do until power is fully restored. want to go to video. again, the 2400 block of melody drive. still unclear this morning, however, how driver lost control as he was driving uphill in his lifted chevy silverado pickup truck. the sheriff's department is here investigating. we've not heard of a cause just yet. we understand the driver and luckily no residents were injured or hurt. there was a lott of damage to the -- lot of damage to the power pole and the driveway to the home where the truck came

to a stop. many residents heard a loud boom when they came out and then called 911. about 1200 customers were affected. pg&e crews worked quickly, however. as of this point, about 100 customers are still without power. we spoke to one woman who described how she will be affected. >> we haven't been able to sleep. you know, we have -- i have my grandchildren going to school. i don't know -- i have to go buy coffee, at least because we have no heater, no electricity. so we're not able to perform as usual. >> reporter: again, about 100 customers will be inconvenienced today. originally, pg&e estimated power to be fully restored around 8:00, 8:15. now it looks like power will be restored to those remaining customers sometime this afternoon. on the website it says somewhere around 5:00 this afternoon. that all depends, however, how

quickly they can replace the pole and restore power. back out here live, there's also environmental crews here cleaning up some oil that had spilled apparently from the truck as well. we have that drew, the pg&e crew as well as san mateo county sheriff's deputies. in terms of road closures, melody drive between heather is expected to be closed for the next few hours. we've seen several residents drivers here going through here breaking through the barriers. it's important if you do live here in this area that you don't go through here. it's closed off until the afternoon. we're live in san carlos, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:37. san francisco police still searching for suspects in sunday night's shooting in the tenderloin that injured eight people. ktvu news obtained exclusive video of the gunfire. it shows a silver sedan pulling up to the corner of turk and taylor. now, a man wearing a white t- shirt and dark sweatpants get out of the car and walks into

the crowd and starts shooting. you can see people falling to the ground, ducking for cover. people in the tenderloin say this gun violence is not new. >> you have to be careful of the company you keep around here. >> reporter: did you hear the gunshots. >> yes. >> reporter: how many shots did you hear? >> a lot of them. a lot of them. >> police say the shooting came after the gunman argued with another man over a debt of less than $50. that debt is believed to be tied to a drug deal. 8:38. two burglars are on the loose on the peninsula after ransacking a home and prompts a neighborhood search. a woman had returned home with her baby when she discovered she wasn't alone. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from palo alto where she's been talking to neighbors and police. >> reporter: good morning. neighbors say the couple who lives here with their baby had

recently moved into this new home built in this neighborhood. now, cameras were rolling inside their home when the burglars broke in, and police hope that that evidence will help them track down these thieves. this all started at 6:30 last night when a woman in her 30s returned to her home on ames avenue with her baby and another relative. notice the back door was open. they heard a door slam, ran outside and called 911 to report burglars in the home. police say they were able to see the suspects in the house because the woman was able to view cameras in her home through an app on her smartphone. the crisis and s.w.a.t. team were called. the suspect ransacked the home and it's unknown what they took. before 11:30, officers entered the home with the k-9 but determined the suspects were no longer inside. >> i don't think they will come back to the neighborhood, given the response. i'm not too concerned that they will come back to us.

he disarmed a sailor, then shot and killed the sailor. that gunman was then killed by base security. the navy spokeswoman says the shooter had clearance to be on that navy base. back here at home today, b.a.r.t. police will send out extra officers to the richmond b.a.r.t. station and the surrounding neighborhoods, warning people about a rise in robberies. richmond police say they've taken 18 robbery reports from b.a.r.t. riders in just the past two and a half months. and we're still following the breaking news in fremont where an investigation continues into an early-morning crash that killed a motorcycle rider. it happened about 1:15 this morning at decoto road and fremont boulevard. tara moriarty joining us live to tell us why the driver involved was arrested tara. >> reporter: well, you know, police believe that the suspect was driving at least 80 miles an hour when he slammed into a motorcycle right in the middle of the intersection.

the motorcycle's body is still on scene there where you can see a couple of police officers right near the bank sign. several yards away near a stop sign is actually where the motorcycle is. and then the car involved in the crash is actually down the street where it smashed into a pole. all of this happened around 1:15 at decoto and fremont where you can see debris just scattered all over the roadway. the motorist was thrown and died immediately. officials say that minutes before the suspect was going through a drive-thru taco bale when a worker noticed that he appeared belligerent and called 911. a police car spotted the driver and then the suspect smashed into the motorcyclist about a mile away and kept driving. >> we're still looking for bets and pieces. there's -- bipts and piece -- bits and pieces. there's debris everywhere. there's motorcycle debris everywhere. there's clothing out there. we'll be picking up those pieces. all of those will help piece

indian ocean. now, search planes are grounded right now. ships have been pulled out of the area because of the strong winds, rain and huge swells in the search area. today, the australian defense minister had a dismal assessment of the search. he says it's not like looking for a needle in a haystack but they need to find the haystack. that's hard to take for family members waiting for word on their loved ones on that plane. >> i don't know why i -- i want to see some degree of the aircraft and the black box to know what happened. there are too many unanswered questions. >> malaysia airlines has provided initial financial assistance of $5,000 per passenger to families acknowledging that money is not the focus but that the prolonged search is naturally placing financial strain on the relatives. that was relatives protesting there to the embassy in malaysia in beijing. 153 of the 239 passengers on
