back. this is a live look north towards pittsburg. you can see just how gray the conditions are out there. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. rosemary oroscoe is tracking the rain and will let us know when it will arrive and how long it will last. >> wet weather arrived earlier over parts of the north bay, sliding over the peninsula and let's take a bit of a tour. we'll get in close and take a look at where this moderate rain is falling. the peninsula now getting wet here from san francisco across the airport at sfo, half moon bay, san mateo, redwood city, woodside, stretching into palo alto. this is beginning to shift into the south bay. that's where it will be heading next, into areas like san jose. that will be changing over the next hour or two. it will shift to the east where we have light to moderate rain falling over the east bay,

alameda, morago, you can see it stretches into east into concord. if you are not wet yet, eventually that light rain will begin falling. i want to get into the north bay. santa rosa one of the only areas that has picked up accumulation thus far. .08 in santa rosa. lake county has picked up quite a bit. you will notice as i back up. a very well-defined line. this is the front sweeping through. it will continue its sort easterly track -- south easterly track behind it. we'll remain cloudy and cool. we have another round coming in tomorrow. it looks like the weekend will be wet as well. when i come back, i will have a look at what you can expect for the evening drive. we'll take a look at how much rainfall we expect over the next knew days and we have sierra -- few days and we have sierra snowfall as well. >> thank you. one man is dead, another under arrest after a crash between a car and a motorcycle in fremont. it happened on fremont boulevard after 1:00 a.m.

a fast-food worker nearby even alerted police just moments before the deadly crash. now we're learning more about the people involved. sal castanedo is live. >> reporter: a driver going very fast blew through this intersection at the -- here at decoto and fremont boulevard. police say an officer witnessed the crash as he was trying to pull the speeding driver over. the driver became belligerent at the taco bell. he reportedly tried to pay with a healthcare card. he hit a motorcycle killing the rider only described as a male.

>> the suspect tried to get out of the vehicle and flee over a fence. the initial responding officer was finally able to catch up with him. >> reporter: as we mentioned, the driver was arrested. the violent crash took down several utility poles. we see crews waiting until officers finish the investigation to fix it. the busy intersection here has been blocked since early this morning. as of now, the suspect has been arrested. police say he will be charged with dui and other charges. the name of the person killed has not been released to the public. back to you. >> thank you. in san francisco, a driver was arrested for driving under the influence after a crash involving a fire hydrant. it happened at hyde and o'farrell just before 1:00. it sent water shooting 60 feet into the air. police say a sedan and taxi van crashed, sending the taxi plowing into the hydrant. the driver of the sedan was arrested on suspicion of dui.

new details in the san francisco shooting that left eight people injured in the city's tenderloin. police now say emeryville police have helped make an arrest in the case. we're still waiting for more information about who was arrested. yesterday, police chief greg sur told ktvu that the shooting was sparked by an argument over a debt of less than $50 from a previous drug deal and the intended target of the shooting was not injured. tonight at 6:00, san francisco police are scheduled to hold a town hall meeting to discuss the deadly officer- involved shooting on friday. tonight's meeting comes after family members and friends of 28-year-old alejandra nieta gathered to remember him last night at the bernal heights park where he was killed. officers say they were forced to open fire after he pointed a gun at them. but friends say they don't believe nieto was carrying a weapon. oakland police are looking for two men who robbed two

women at gunpoint in the city's upscale montclair neighborhood. ktvu's alex savidge is in the area where it happened and joins us now live. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: well, good afternoon to you, tori. oakland police are checking surveillance video from this area as they investigate this crime from yesterday. i can tell you, the surveillance camera that's mounted here on the mount clair parking garage did capture the two armed robbers running away after their holdup yesterday. two women were walking toward the garage to get their car car, and oakland police two young men one of them armed approached the women. this was before 5:30 yesterday afternoon. the investigators are not saying what the armed robbers got pay way with but the two women were reportedly quite shaken. this is an area that does not see a lot of crime and the head of the village says this robbery in the middle of a busy street is disturbing. >> encouraging everyone to be alert of their surroundings, to take initiative to, you know,

call in suspicious behavior and try to prevent these crimes of opportunity. >> reporter: those two armed robbers escaped in a car described by police as a blue, possibly an audi. investigators right now are going over surveillance video. they will be going over surveillance video from the garage and possibly other businesses in this area. but they are still asking for anyone in the area, anyone who may have witnessed what happened and there were quite a few people out to come forward with any information that may lead again to these two armed robbers who held up two women at gunpoint yesterday here in montclair. we're live in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, alex. police are looking for the public's help in identifying two burglars who broke into a home last night. a woman with her baby returned to that home and found the

burglars there. janine de la vega joins us live from palo alto to share new information that you just learned. janine? >> >> reporter: tori, police just released an image of the burglaries from security cameras inside the home. this break-in prompted a lockdown in the neighborhood and response from s.w.a.t. at this hour, these two men are still on the loose. now, this is the -- these are the two men police are looking for. right now, officers still have a very vague description other than the thieves appear to be in their mid-20s. they were wearing dark clothes. police say they broke into a home on ans avenue in middlefield sometime between 5:20 and 6:25 yesterday evening. a woman in her 30s returned to her home with the baby and a relative when she discovered the rear door was open. they quickly ran out. police spent more than five hours doing a search. in the end, they were unable to locate the men. now they are studying the video. >> they are looking over any items of evidentiary value that may be in the home.

for example if fingerprints were left, items removed, anything like that. routine investigative stuff that detectives always do after a burglary and are reaching out to other law enforcement agencies to see if there are any potential similar crimes that may have happened in other cities. >> reporter: neighbors say the couple who lives in the home recently moved in and are pretty shaken up over what's happened. about 100 houses were affected by the police activity last night and told to stay indoors. this morning, they are hopeful the thieves are caught. >> i'm concerned that the burglars didn't get caught. so clearly, i think all of us have to worry, and i think all of us have to use good judgment to make sure we keep our doors locked and like i said, watch out for each other. >> reporter: police have stepped up patrols in the midtown neighborhood which is normal after an incident like this occurs. they want anyone who recognizes the men from the photo to immediately call the police

department. reporting live from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. developing news now out of texas, where crews are battling a raging apartment fire near downtown houston. the houston chronicle reports the five-alarm fire started nearly two hours ago in a large complex under construction and it is still bumping. the smoke and flames can be seen for miles away. there are reports that embers are blowing towards nearby homes. so far, there are no reports of any injuries. this is the scene that's reminding people in the bay area of that massive apartment fire in the building under construction in san francisco's mission bay neighborhood two weeks ago today. religious freedom verses equality for women. the big issue before the u.s. supreme court today. whale watchers didn't have to go far to get a glimpse of gentle giants. where this video of a close encounter with a gray whale was wake taken.

summit in holland says he signed an emergency declaration for washington state at least 14 people were killed after that deadly mud slitd over -- mudslide over the weekend. officials have been unable to get an accurate account of people unaccounted for. right now, the number still stands at 170. governor jerry brown directed 18 members of california's elite urban search and rescue teams to go to washington to help with the rescue efforts and red cross volunteers from silicon valley are headed there to help. china today demanded that malaysia turn over the satellite data used to conclude that flight 370 crashed in the southern indian ocean. today, search planes were grounded and ships were pulled out of the area because of stormy weather conditions. crews have now narrowed their efforts to a 600,000-square mile area, about the size of alaska. that's still 20% of what they had previously been searching.

in beijing, relatives of the passengers of flight 370 held an angry demonstration, protesting the malaysian government's handling of the crisis. it's a spirited debate both inside and outside of the u.s. supreme court on whether the government can force businesses to provide health insurance that includes birth control. >> what do we want! >> freedom! >> when do we want it! >> now! >> protesters from both sides of the debate are outside despite the bad weather. inside, attorneys for the government and businesses suing the government are presenting their argument. among the those complicated issues are the rights to religious freedom and equalitity freedom workers. >> this is about whether the federal government can force people of faith to violate their own faith by paying for something that is contrary to the dictates and teachings of their faith. >> the plaintiffs in the case

from the decontamination of ships and the painting of dials and gauges with glow in the dark paint years ago. pay attention to your surroundings. that's what b.a.r.t. police are telling riders as part of an effort to crack down on crime around b.a.r.t. stations. during this evening's commute, officers will be handing out fliers to riders at the richmond b.a.r.t. station. the message will advise people to take their eyes off of smartphones and tablets to avoid becoming a victim. there have been 18 robberies near that station in just the last two and a half months. police say the robbers seem to be targeting commuters who are disstrarblthed with their mobile devices and -- distracted with their mobile devices and some using headphones. >> i see a lot of people doing that with the headphones and i see a lot of people doing it. i need to stop doing it. >> investigators say the men

are young, in groups of two for 0 or three and are stealing cell phones, cash and credit cards. anthe oakland zoo broadcast the release of the condor. the bird is one of four set to be let go. they decided to release only one because of rain in the forecast. officials say it was met at the opening of the cage by a previously released condor and then explored a feeding area where other condors were. the oakland zoo is working in partnership with the recovery program. and people in capitola did not need a boat to go whale watching on saturday. they were standing on the wharf. enjoying the day when a gray whale came up. videos were posted on youtube. and the light rain will

continue to fall over the bay area. this is a first in a number of rounds coming our way between now and the weekend. giving you a live look there over parts of the east bay where we have mostly cloudy skies and light rain beginning to fall over the inner east bay as well. we'll get back into the radar and take a look at where some of the rain is. i want to point out to the north, notice behind the front, the line there beginning to see a lit of a break in the north bay. once this line of rain moves through your neighborhood, you will be left with scattered showers. but we're not done yet. zooming in closer along the coastline, you can see light to moderate rain, areas along highway 1 across the santa cruz mountains. redwood city, strefth out into -- stretching out into sunnyvale and the line will continue to move your direction as we move through the afternoon. in in the east bay, we have light rain falling from oakland, san leandro, all of

the communities, hayward, dublin. looks like livermore is still mainly dry. areas right around concord seeing some light rain along highway 24, highway 4, 580, 680 getting wet at this point. to the north bay where we continue can a few scattered showers here around the napa area, perhaps shifting over into fair field. but scattered showers will be left today for the afternoon and the evening drive. i think it will be hit or miss. take a look as i put this into motion. it's 5:00. we have again on and off light rain continuing to fall with mostly cloudy skies. and it's a cool day out there. we had 70s yesterday. today we'll struggle to get into the 60s for some of us. i will show you that in a second. form morning we wake up and will be wet again-- tomorrow will be wet again. the sierra is picking up much- needed snow. we expect to see anywhere from

.5 to an inch over the next few days. as far as the sierra there is an advisory for a winter stormwatch and warning that starts today. it will last until thursday morning. the highest elevations could pick up a foot to two feet of snow. temperatures right now, it's a chilly one in santa rosa. 47 degrees under mostly gray foggy conditions. widespread upper 50s to low 60s around the bay. for the afternoon, we'll remain on the cool side. widespread low 60s around the bay. upper 50s over parts of the north bay and a few mid- to upper 60s in the forecast. here we go with today and into tomorrow. the wet weather will continue. it looks like we'll dry out thursday morning, could be wet but then we get an opportunity to and then the weekend looks wet. >> but we do need it. >> we do. >> thank you. >> you got it. it's not just a hairstale but a way to -- hairstyle but a way to make a difference. how students are helping global
