now at noon we're expecting word from leland yee's office any minute now regarding the senator's arrest and federal corruption and gun charges. the deadline to sign up for the state's mandatory health insurance is fast approaching. what enrollees can do to speed up the process. and march madness sweeps the south bay as the stanford cardinals hope to become the cinderella story in the ncaa tournament.

this afternoon, state senator leland yee is a free man out on $500,000. he was arrested yesterday as part of a five-year fib investigation that uncovered allegations of political corruption, bribery, trafficking guns and even murder for hire. he's due back in court on monday. yee represents district 8 which covers a large part of san francisco and san mateo counties i right now we're awaiting word from his representatives. we have not heard from yee since he was arrested last night. alex savidge is live outside of home. i spoke to representatives. >> reporter: they are calling for his resignation immediately. no word on who the plans are. we don't know if senator yee is inside the home. things have been mostly quiet here throughout the morning

following yesterday's stunning arrest of this veteran police and well-liked neighbor. >> reporter: this woman was the only visitor at state senator yee's home this morning but didn't want to stop and talk on her way out. fbi agents arrested yee at his home yesterday part of a series of raids. some who have lived in this area are surprised by the allegations of political corruption and gun trafficking. yee is accused of accepting campaign cash in explain for political favors. while omneighbors are sad -- while some neighbors are saddened, some are stunned. >> i think he really worked for the people, i think he had a lot of integrity until this came down. >> that seems you know out of

character for someone in his position for me. so surprising in this neighborhood of the it's a very homey neighborhood. you would never expect something like that to happen. >> reporter: but yee's arrest almost certainly puts his future in jeopardy. he was a front-runner for the race for secretary of state. now fellow lawmakers are demanding that he rein immediately. darrell steinberg said if he doesn't help down by tomorrow, his colleagues will vote to suspend him from office. >> don't burden your colleagues in this great institution with your troubles. leave. >> reporter: and yee's arrest will be a major blow to california's democratic party. he is the third senator to face corruption charges so far this year. senate republicans have expressed outrage at the serious charges leveled against yee and with so many democratic dealing with embarrassing scandals, republicans may see

an opening as we move toward the mid-term elections this year. as for yee's future in office here, we've reached out several times to his representatives and we do understand that there will be an announcement or some sort of statement coming from senator yee's press secretary, coming shortly here. so we will have that for you as soon as that does happen. we're live this afternoon in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, alex. more details now on the criminal complaint against leland yee. the 137-page indictment names yee and 26 others. the it tightment says -- indictment says he accepted campaign donations from undercover agents in exchange for political favors. it also alleges that he agreed to set up multi-million dollar gun sales between an undercover agent and arms dealer that yee knew. ironically, this was happening when yee was pushing gun control legislation. along with senator yee, who

and yolo counties. the chp says the 71-year-old cyclist was driving east a mile east of 505 when a car crossed the midline and hit him. the car took off and headed west toward winters. the chp says debris at the scene indicates it was a light- colored vehicle. the deadline to enroll in the state's insurance program covered california is now just five days away. and we're hearing there is a flurry of signups from people leaving things to the last minute. sal castanedo is in concord with what people need to know if they want to get health coverage. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: good afternoon. you are absolutely right, with that deadline fast approaching, people are signing up rather quickly. i want to show you this video that we took of the call center in concord. one of the three in the state helping people navigate through the sign up-- signup process. you can go to

coveredcalifornia.com. if you don't have health insurance, it's mandatory. failing to do so can carry financial penalties. a lot of people are getting it done this week. >> in the first three days of this week, over 50,000 californians signed up and got enrolledded for coverage. that's almost double the entire people who enrolled in october. we're not extending the deadline from march 31st. it's a hard deadline. but we are going to be allowing people that start the application process to get across the finish-line by april 15th. >> reporter: startth the process is as easy as creating a user name and password and saving it and verifying you want to sign up. you can go back later and pick your health plan after march 31st but before april 15th. rhonda sanchez says people who call can speed up the process by having certain things ready. >> have your documents ready.

there are a lot of people that are calling in that are naturalized citizens not realizing, when they go through the process, we need the information, social security number, dates of birth, your income information. if they have that, we can go through the process pretty quickly. >> reporter: the penalty for not signing up is 1% of your income or $895 whenever is greater. the state officials say the biggest setback would not have health insurance when you need it. if you go to the website, there are some ways that you can meet real people and go to events where people will help you sign up. there are events in baypoint, in concord and in oakland, for example. live in concord, sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, sal. a livermore man was burned and had to be airlifted after an eaum fire early this morning. this is cell phone video of the fire taken by a person who lives nearby. moments after it broke out, just after 1:00 this morning

and it's not clear how the fire started but at least two apartments were damaged. at least 11 people were evacuated. firefighters say the victim had severe burns to his hands and face but also respiratory problems which is why he had to be treated immediately. >> you know, the people -- the by sleep in this apartment came out like this quickly, like that. it was really bad. >> it took about 25 minutes for fire crews to put the fire out. overall, they estimate the damage to be about $100,000. at this point, they say it's too early to tell if it's suspicious. but it remains under investigation. breaking news out of san francisco regarding the corruption case involving leland yee. we want to go to john sasaki on the phone, where yee's attorney is speaking.

>> no comment. he's dealing -- he's dealing with what's on his plate. the most immediate thing was the secretary of state election. >> what's happened to the money he's raised for this race? >> all of the technical issue relating to this banning of campaign, i leave that to the technical campaign folks. >> did he get calls from other politicians such as stein steinberg who says he wants him to resign? >> we'll deal with that in due time. >> it seems like they are gonna vote to suspend him -- >> we'll deal with that in due time. at 9:30. these things are more in the nature of followup on what we did yesterday regarding the release conditions and the bond and so forth. >> can you elaborate on the release conditions? >> no, i want to concentrate on the secretary of state issue today. this is the letter that we sent on behalf of state senator leland yee with a little before the noon hour. i hearby wis draw my candidacy for application for secretary of state -- withdraw my candidacy for application for secretary of state effective immediately. >> how long you have been working on that with him, coming to this decision? >> no comment on that. of this was a personal, private decision by the senator hand he asked me to convey it to all of you.

that's the -- there is the decision that was made. we're not commenting on how we got there. but that's the decision that he wants me to relay to all of you. >> what would he say to the constituents in the district right now? >> we're taking it one issue at a time. that will be dealt with when we deal with the senate issue. >> do you have comments on how he and his family are doing? >> i will not talk about it. that yee with withdrawing his candidacy for the position. he was interested in running for secretary of state. yee's attorney, once again, refused to comment on the numerous calls for yee to resign from his position in the state senate saying we'll deal with that at a later time. yee will be in court on monday. that's the latest that we know at this point. but we're continuing to follow this story and much more on ktvu.com. we're gonna take a quick break and we'll have more right after this.

hatching today -- hatching today -- happening today, in four hours, the stanford men's basketball team will be playing a critical game that could win them a spot in the elite 8. janine de la vega is live at the campus where students have come down with a serious case of march madness. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. as you said, it really is a cinderella-like story for the men's basketball team here at stanford because they haven't made it to the sweet 16 since 2008. there's sure to be lots of fans here who will be cheering them on to victory tonight. they were seen as underdogs but now the cardinal men are on a winning streak beating out higher ranked teams to make it

to the sweet 16. >> i think any time someone does better than you pick, it gets everybody's morale up. >> reporter: it will get louder from students here when they cheer on the men's team at 4:15 this afternoon. stanford plays dayton in memphis, a team also considered and underdog but that's really stepped up the game. >> guys are really locked in on the opponents and what we need to do to be successful and we keep doing that and bring the effort and energy in the floor, and i think if we do that, we'll be all right. >> reporter: earlier there was speculation that the coach's job was in jeopardy because he has not been able to take the team as far as hoped. but that's all changed now. >> we were watching the game when they beat kansas. it was a little bit of a

surprise. there's been enough upsets where we know we can pull through. >> i love stanford. this is a really exciting thing. >> reporter: there will be viewing parties throughout the bay area. if they win, stanford will advance to the elite 8. reporting live from stanford, janine de la vega janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. a new study says two bay area cities are among the worst places to park in the nation. oakland is ranked as the second worse place to park a car. san francisco was right behind in third. chicago was number one for the worse place to find parking. san francisco charges twice as much to park a car. oakland was boosted into the number two spot. tornadoes touched down in three northern california counties yesterday. this is video of one of the tornadoes in roseville. the national weather service classified the tornado as an ef-

0 with winds of 65 to 85 miles an hour. about a dozen homes suffered roof damage. not far away in the town of willows in glen county, the national weather service confirmed that another ef-0 tornado touched down there. minor damage was reported but no one was injured. the third tornado was reported in butte county. tornado warnings were issued around 3:30 yesterday afternoon until around 7:30 in the areas as well as in placer, el dorado and sutter counties. a very active weather day for parts of northern california yesterday. today, things are different. lingering clouds and we'll hold onto the chance of a scattered shower. overcast. the bulk of the shower activity from yesterday has moved out to the east and basically dissipating but some more showers approaching the north coast and still some lingering snowshowers out towards the ser. seeing snowfall totals or storm totals on the order of 6 to 20

inches this week. very productive up in the sierra. we'll take anything we can can get. right now, not a lot to show you, a few spotty showers up in parts of the north bay out towards parts of marin county and sonoma county right around santa rosa, just outside to the north or basically the santa rosa area. a few scattered light showers. and there's the doppler sweep as well, not detecting much in the way of organized rainfall. we'll hold onto the chance for a stray shower thursday afternoon. lowerict asks out towards concord and walnut creek. san jose right now checking in with 60 degrees. as far as the forecast for tonight, we do have at -- the least for today we have some clouds out there. clouds and sun mixed. a chance of a shower and lingering clouds. tomorrow, mostly cloudy skies. north bay showers, there is a chance up in the north bay. the weekend we're tracking saturday rain and sunday

clouds. that's the next storm scheduled to move into the region. preseason baseball returns to the bay area for tonight with the as playing the giants. look for partly cloudy skies. winds out of the southwest right around 15 miles an hour and a temperature at first pitch around 56 degrees. the weather should be okay for the evening ballgame. back here hat least the wider perspective -- at least the wider perspective, you can see high pressure trying to return. with that, a lot of cloud cover for your friday. we're expecting some showers, especially up in the north bay. as i mentioned a chance everywhere. and then into saturday, first thing saturday morning, the rainfall rates will be increasing. moderate to heavy rain expected saturday morning. some clouds out there for tonight. tom, chance for scattered showers especially up towards sonoma county and partly to mostly cloudy. here is the rain line moving to the south saturday morning. some lingering showers saturday afternoon. forecast highs we're thinking a lot of upper 50s but mainly 60s. a look ahead to your five-day

forecast, the last few days of march. it will be fairly busy out there. north bay showers friday and then into saturday. morning rain could be heavy at times shund shut be the better way -- sunday should be the better day of the weekend. monday we could be packing more rain. it's nice to see raindrops on the five-day. >> march go going out -- going out like a lion. officials say this year's fair will have a nightly fireworks show following concerts with artists like leann rimes and eddie money. hours will be extended 11:00 to 11:00 p.m. tuesdays through sundays and the fair starts june 18th. we'll have more of the news after this.
