section. a new sign that california state senator leland yee career could be over. he is bowing out of the race for sec of state. and now there are -- secretary of state and now there are more calls for him to resign. we have team coverage beginning with ktvu's eric rasmussen. >> reporter: california state senator leland yee made the announcement through his attorney around noon. she withdrawing from the race -- he is withdrawing from the race from sec of -- secretary of state. >> california state senator leland yee quickly exited without a word a night before his attorney faced cameras again today. >> within the last 20 minutes we have relayed a written request to the secretary of state. the letter signed by leland yee

1-68 children have some form of autism according to the centers for disease control and prevention. the numbers show a 30% increase from two years ago. ktvu's john fowler went to menlow park today to meet a young man who said it is important to remember the children are more than just numbers. >> reporter: he and his mom

mean increased services. >> every person with autism is different and supports and services that work for one individual are not going to work for another. >> reporter: his old teacher says he learned a lot from this young man. >> he taught me a lot of patience. to not look at everyone the same because we are not all the same. >> reporter: he is graduating with agry in communication -- with a degree in communication. he continues to plan to speak up. john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. the transportation security administration wants armed security police officers at airport check points during peak hours according to a report in response to the deadly shooting at lax. the tsa employee was killed in november when a armed man stormed the security check point. the tsa issued a dozen recommendations in the wake of the tragedy.

some of the other recommendations include increased security at ticket counters and mandatory training on how to respond to a shooting. >> god forbid we are in this situation again. >> the tsa can make recommendations but each airport is in charge of developing its own security plan which is then suggest to a- - subject to approval. the head of the tsa will testify tomorrow to review the recommendations. police arrested six baggage handlers at lax accused of stealing thousands of dollars of items. investigators questioned 8 other baggage handlers. the handlers are accused of stealing and selling them on craigslist. police expect to make more arrests. the 62-year-old woman who has been busted three times for

trying to sneak on flights has been arrested again. marilyn hartman was taken into custody yesterday after being spotted in the airport's baggage claim area. although police say she didn't try to board a plane just being at the airport is a violation of the court order for her to stay away. new developments in a story about a slaughterhouse shut down in the bake of a -- wake of a beef recall. regulators have approved plans to reopen under new ownership. they plan to have it running again by next month. the previous owner recalled almost 9 million pounds of beef last month ask currently -- and currently under investigation for skirting inspection rules. bank of america agreed to settle a mortgage security lawsuit. they are one of 18 institutions sued over the sale of mortgage

securities. the lawsuits claim they falsery recommended the loans behind the securities which led to the collapse of the housing bubble. the bank of america deal include cash payments of $6.3 billion. the national weather service confirmed a tornado touchdown down in a roseville neighborhood yesterday. the weather service classified it as a ef-0. this is cell phone video. it had winds of 85 miles per hour and damaged the roofs of a dozen homes. today homeowners were adding up the damage. >> the fire marshal said they will have to pull all of the stucco off and he said with the windows and everything probably between 25 to $30,000. >> tornadoes also touched down in glen and butte counties. our chief meteorologist bill martin talked to us about those after it happened on ktvu. bill, it sounds strange, how

happening now the oakland a's and san francisco giants are warming up for the first game in the bay bridge series. ktvu's fred inglis is live outside of at&t park in san francisco where the first of three starts in two hours. >> reporter: it is breezy but it is sunny here. fans lining up entering into the at&t park. it is bogged down because this is where they are starting to use the metal detecters and it is slowing the process down a little bit but they expect a sell out tonight anyway after this is just an exhibition game and the giants took the field worse. they worked on defense and offense, of course. both teams come up from arizona with injury issues. and some expectations. a's won 20 more games than san francisco last year and made the playoffs but one fan expects his team it return to the playoff run.

suv she was driving was struck by a oncoming train in morgan hill. mese say she end -- police say she ended up on thetric track -- on the tracks where she was hit. ktvu's robert handa has more. >> reporter: it was a strange series of events that lead to the crash. it started with a possible hit hit and run and ended with a young woman's death. >> reporter: the wemmage of -- the wreckage of the ford is what is left after a deadly collision with a train last night. she was driving her mother's suv when it was hit by a train just off central avenue. the young woman died at the hospital. >> i have known her for all her life. whole 20 years. it is just tragic to see this. it breaks my heart. >> reporter: police say

unexplained events led to her death. ktvu obtained this surveillance video. it shows her driving away seconds after side swiping the parked car. she headed away from the damaged car but the street is a dead end and she had to turn back. the video shows her speeding, almost hitting another vehicle, forcing it to swerve away as she drives off. >> she was panicked and made a u-turn. >> reporter: she hit another dead end jumped a curve, drove through a channel and got stuck on the tracks with a train coming. >> looks like her wheels were spinning. >> reporter: cal fire says the train operator slowed the train down to 40 miles per hour but it still crushed the suv and pushed it half a mile down the

tracks. >> she knew her name, her age and it decreased from that point on. >> reporter: police investigators are waiting for lab results to see if drugs or alcohol was a factor. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. fire investigators have determined an apartment fire this morning was started accidentally by a man who was smoking smoking and drinking heavily. the fire broke out just after 1:00 a.m. this morning. firefighters say two units were badly burned and the chief says the man in the unit where the fire started was seriously injured. >> has burns on his hands, face and concerned about respiratory burns and he was flown to a burn center. >> we have no update on the man's condition. the red cross is helping to assist the 11 people who were displaced by the fire. damage is estimated to be $100,000. a man has been arrested

accused of stealing two puppies. he was arrested yesterday after a woman reported two puppies were stolen from her home last week. police say the woman found her puppies listed on craigslist. they say she set up a meeting with the suspect and when she confronted him he ran away. police arrested him. investigators recovered both puppies. the dog were unharmed and returned to their owner. it is estimated an average of 22 milliary veterans die every day from suicide. every day. this week veterans all lobby -- are lobbying urging them to do something about the problem. today on the washington mall, jacqueline felt talked to a bay area veteran.

suchers have new clues as they -- searchers have new clues as they look for the missing malaysia airlines jet liner. officials say the satellite images show 300 objection in the indian ocean. a japanese satellite spotted 10 more pieces of possible debris. crews had to cancel yesterday's search due to rough weather. today's search resumed two hours ago but after a week of searching crews have not recovered a single piece of evidence from the jet liner that was carrying 239 people. it has been a very difficult mission. >> flying 200 nots as slow as we like to go. you get little time to identify objection.
