cash lanes getting into san francisco. the traffic backup here, the delay, i should say the drive time is about 20, 25 minutes. it's better than it was in the last few days. moving along and taking a look at the san mateo bridge. it looks pretty good. heading out to the high rise. when you get there, san mateo, 101, noticeably lighter heading down to redwood city and palo alto and even the stretch between half moon bay and 280 on 92 is improved. as we look at the santa cruz mountain, the traffic there also looks good. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. lawmakers in sacramento may vote as early as this morning to suspend state senator leland yee. tara moriarty is live in front of yee's sunset district home with what comes next for the once prominent bay area politician. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. well, leland yee is refusing to step down as state senator and that is perhaps in part due to the fact that if he does choose to resign, he will not be paid. we know he has some financial

issues right now. we do know that in two hours, the state senate is going to be meeting and then voting on whether or not to suspend him. last wednesday, this past wednesday, when he was arrested. darrell steinberg made an open plea asking him to leave and not burden his colleagues with his troubles. yee was arrested by the fbi in a criminal sting operation that also netted a notorious chinatown gangster. yesterday, yee's attorney announced the withdraw from the stays for secretary of state. >> i hereby withdraw my candidacy for secretary of state effective immediately. best regards, leland yee. >> reporter: more details about alleged trafficking and firearms has surfaced. the fbi criminal complaint accuses yee of conspiracy to illegally import firearms,

including rocket launchers worth $2.5 from a separatist group in the philippines. dianne feinstein did issue a rebuke saying "it's become clear he's lost the confidence of his colleagues. for the gooded of his constituents, he should step down." live in san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we're learning more about the 26 other people arrested in that same fbi sting as leland yee. one of them is sports agent, marlon sullivan, who grew up in san francisco. the fbi accuses marlon sullivan of plotting with underkonder agents in a murder-for-hire plot, gun trafficking, drug trafficking. and keith jackson is accused of helping with the murder for hire conspiracy, gun trafficking and drug trafficking. the people who know jackson are shocked. >> i was shocked, stunned,

saddened regarding the allegations such as the ones that have been alleged. they are serious. >> brandon jackson, keith's son, is accused. it said that jackson toledo agents that his son was shipping 300 pounds of -- told agents that his son was shipping 300 pounds of marijuana to memphis, tennessee every month and it states they solicited and fbi agent to provide cocaine for them to sell. make sure you stay here with us at ktvu channel 2 for the latest on state senator leland yee and the others charged in the case. we'll bringing the latest on air and online as it happens. 7:06. there's developing news in east san jose where police are investigating a suspicious death. 911 received a call around 7:40 last night about a possible dead body at this house on aborn road. when officers arrived, they found the body of a man. so far, there's no word yet on

his identity or how he died. but police say they are treating this case as a suspicious death. homicide investigators responded to the scene as a matter of protocol. 7:06. police in san leandro warning everybody be on the alert for a scam artist. brian flores live in san leandro now to tell us why police say, brian, there may be more victims out there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, yeah. we're on the corner of doolittle in san leandro. this is the location where the last scam took place. police are warning people just be aware of your surroundings. now, this all happened at 11:45 in the morning on tuesday here. police say the scam artist waved down the driver of a big rig truck saying it was emitting a large plume of smoke. well, when the driver got out of his truck to inspect it, the scam artist somehow rummaged through the truck quickly looking for any items. now, it's unclear if other items were stolen. police believe there are other victims out there, similar

crimes which is why they are putting out this particular type of info. here is a quick description of who police are looking for. police say he's a hispanic man, 25, 30 years old. about 5'10" and he was last seen driving away in a small gray compact car. san leandro police say criminals are getting more creative using various scams to target people. they are warning people to be aware of your surroundings. we're live here in san leandro, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. well, this morning, rescuers in washington state are telling people brace themselves. the death toll is expected to go up a lot after that massive mudslide. at least 25 people are known dead when the rain-soaked hillside collapsed saturday. but at least 90 people are still missing. so far, everyone who has been found alive, they were rescued within the first couple of hours. rescuers are holding out hope they refuse to call this a recovery operation but they say the work is grueling.

>> it really doesn't hit you until the day is over. we're out there digging through people's lives, doing the best we can to bring closure to some of the families. >> and looking at the scope of the tragedy, as that sinks in, some of the people who live in the area are angry with local officials. they say they refuse to let them join the search immediately after the landslide when the chances of finding survivors were the greatest. now, today, more local volunteers will be heading out to help with the relief efforts. the american red cross says nine more volunteers from the bay area are going up to provide support and comfort to the people waiting to hear about missing loved ones. if you want to help, the red cross says the best way is to donate money. one family that lost their mother in that landslide went back to their property trying to recover a safe. but they found something else very valuable. >> oh! >> can you believe this?

welcome back. 7:13. happening today -- the richmond schoolteacher accused of sexually abusing students is due in court. 32-year-old ronald guinto was arrested earlier this month. if convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison for several alleged sexual abuse allegations. the arrest came two months after starting his work at mira vista elementary in richmond of the abuse happened during field trips while he was a teacher at his previous school. this scandal has prompted big changes in the hiring process

for the contra costa unified school district. also today, a former santa clara elementary school principal is due to find out if he will stand trial on drug charges. eric lewis was arrested in 2012 on five charges of selling drugs. prosecutors say they hope to have a decision on a trial by the end of the day. they say methamphetamines, ecstasy and a date rape drug were found in his home. lewis had been the principal of montague elementary school. a newlywed who confessed to killing her husband has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. 22-year-old jordan lynn dwram received the sentence after pleading guilty in december to second-degree murder. she says she shoved her husband off a cliff at montana glacier park just days after marrying him. graham filed a motion to withdraw her plea, arguing that

prosecutors in bad faith were pushing for a stiffer sentence. prosecutors say she was trying to delay sentencing. a booming internet fad called revenge porn could be a federal crime. that's when someone posts lewd video or photos of a non-done senting person usually in the -- non-consenting person usually in the case of a jilted losker or hacker -- lover or hacker. california state law makes this a crime. but most websites cannot be forced to remove the content because of a loophole in the law. if spas, speier's legislation could close the loophole -- if passed, speier's legislation could close the loophole.

the lake tahoe visitors' authority may cancel the annual 4th of july fireworks show. a couple filed a lawsuit claiming debris from the fireworks is polluting the lake and violating the clean water act. well, the agency scheduled an emergency meeting yesterday to consider ending its sponsorship for the fireworks show. >> it's just really sad that a couple people could destroy such a family tradition. >> the couple says they want to protect the lake and they have no intention of trying to stop the fireworks. they say they just want proper

permitting and cleanup enforced. tourism officials say they will wait another week. they hope to settle the lawsuit before canceling the event. 7:16. california is adding a lot of jobs according to a new report. riverside in southern california had the highest job growth rate in the country according to the u.s. bureau of labor statistics. san francisco came in a very close second. los angeles was 10th in the country. state rankings of california in third place, only utah and north dakota had stronger job growth and the only state to lose jobs was west virginia. 7:17. well, new this morning, u.s. attorney general air irk holder has just -- eric holder has just extended federal recognition to the marriages of about 300 same-sex couples in michigan. the weddings took place before a federal appeals court put the weddings and marriages on hold. holder's action allows the

couples to get federal benefits. a judge struck down michigan's guy marriage ban. but on tuesday -- gay marriage ban. but on tuesday, they put a halt to same-sex marriages. we want to check in with sal to see how things are moving on this friday. >> we're looking at a commute that's moderate. it's better than it was going -- where it was yesterday, for example, this is a look at the richmond bridge. there is a little bit of slow traffic coming up on the toll plaza but the backup isn't that deep if you are trying to get into marin county. shouldn't be that bad. as we look at the commute on the bay bridge toll plaza, there is a little bit of slowing. this is about a 25-minute drive time. if you have been following us all week, if you have been watching, first of all, thank you and you know this is better than it has been the last few days. the commute on highway 17 is much better today. let's take a look at drive times, 280 from serramonte to san bruno, only three minutes. that's good. 101 from the 280 interchange

to stay away from sfo has been busted again for hanging around the airport. 62-year-old marilyn hartman was arrested wednesday after she was seen in the terminal 3 baggage claim area. it was the fifth time hartman has gotten in trouble at sfo. investigators say on three different occasions, she tried to sneak onto a plane. one time she made it on board. a judge ordered her to stay away from the airport unless she has a legitimate airline ticket. hartman has told police in the past she has cancer and wanted to go to a warm place like hawaii but her story has never been verified. don't be surprised if you see people hanging from ropes outside the hyatt regency hotel in san francisco today. they've earned right to this unusual view of san francisco because they raised money for the group outward bound. now, former 49er guy mcintyre was one of the first to rappel

on wednesday on federal charges of corruption and conspiracy to traffic in guns. yesterday, yee withdrew from the race for california secretary of state. coming up for you at 8:00, ktvu's tara moriarty, will have a live report on the growing number of people calling for yee to resign his state senate seat. in the meantime, gun control groups trying to stem the damage as leland yee, one of the legislators most outspoken gun control supporters, is now facing gun trafficking allegations. the gun control groups say the charges filed against senator yee cloud the future of two of his gun control bills. one bill would ban devices that allow for quick reloading of military-style assault weapons. the other one calls for a study of safe firearms storage methods. gun chrome groups are gonna try to find another lawmaker to take the lead on gun control legislation. make sure you stay right here with ktvu channel 2 for the latest on leland yee and all of

the others charged in this case. we'll bring you the latest on air and online as it happens. it is 7:33. a teenaged would i is in stable condition after get -- a teenaged boy is in stable condition after getting shot last night in san francisco. it happened at 8:00 on kirkwood avenue near earl street in the hunter point district. officers quickly sealed off the block. police tell us the boy is 14 years old and was shot in the upper body. the shooting remains under investigation. an east bay man accused of a fatal crash that killed a u.s. marine from union city who had just come back from afghanistan, well, he's now facing a second-degree murder charge. the driver, 23-year-old alexander appeared in court yesterday on the charges of murder, vehicular manslaughter and hit and run. investigators say he had been drinking whiskey, then started driving his minicooper early tuesday morning. police say he ran a red light

and slammed into 23-year-old marine, andrew silva and his motorcycle. >> he comes back here. this is home. this is supposed to be safe. this is supposed to be where everybody feels at peace. one person makes a dumb mistake. all of this happens. >> a memorial continues to grow at the intersection where that crash occurred. it includes silva's military boots, american flags and photos of him in uniform standing with his wife. a memorial fund is now established for silva's wife and their 2-year-old son. donations can be made to the andrew silva memorial at any branch of fremont bank. happening today -- an important vote to overhauling muni. the agency running the service transit is considering major changes to most of its ill ra and bus lines. the biggest changes in 30 years. ktvu's alex savidge is live at san francisco city hall with the effort to improve muni efficiency and reliability. alex, what are the changes? >> reporter: well, i will tell you what.

the goal here, to improve muni's on-time performance. it's a system that a lot of riders say is slow and unreliable. in less than an hour, transit officials will meet here and will be voting on a major overhaul to the system. among other things, certain routes would be eliminated and there would be other routes that would be added. new routes that would be added. this plan is known as the transit effectiveness project. it would be the first major overhaul from muni in more than 30 year. the municipal transportation agency board of directors will vote on whether to green light this project that's been in the works since 2008. it was developed with a lot of public input. now, in some cases, buses would pick up more often. on other routes they would come less often. there would be more express buses and expanded hours of operation. riders we talked to are hopeful things will improve. one woman we spoke with who commutes from daly city into san francisco told me she just can't rely on muni. >> i tried to but it's hard

because it's not really dependable. and -- especially in the morning. the afternoon, it's better. underground, too. [laughter] >> you know, it's -- it never comes when it is supposed to. >> reporter: also under this plan, the mta would make infrastructure changes along certain routes here in san francisco that would improve pedestrian safety. a very important topic here in san francisco. the price tag for this project stands at about $44 million. transit officials will be discussing all of the financials involved here and they will be vote -- they will be voting during a meeting that gets start the at 8:00 here at city hall. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:37. this morning, b.a.r.t. takes another step in its move south to san jose. a new phase of the expansion project gets underway at lundy avenue and sierra road. crews will be spending the next

six months doing work below the intersection, it's all part of the massive 15-mile extension project. b.a.r.t. trains are scheduled to begin rolling into san jose in 2017. a lot of questions remain after a bizarre series of events in the south bay that ended with the death of a young woman. 20-year-old monica karanza was killed when a train hit her car at east central and butterfield in morgan hill. investigators say it all started when karanza apparently sideswiped a car. ktvu obtained this video that shows her driving. >> she was panicked, i guess, and made a u-turn and b-lined it that way. >> she went down two dead end streets over a curve, and on the tracks. police say it appears she was trying to drive away as the train approached. officials are waiting for lab

ruths to see if drug -- results to see if drug or alcohol were involved. officials are seeing varying debris of blue and gray in searching for the missing flight. the new search zone is about 1,000 miles west of perth, australia. >> because of ocean drift, this new search area could still be consistent consistent with objects previously identified over the past week. >> although the plane has not been found, chinese insurance companies have begun to pap compensation to some of the passengers' families. relatives have received about $50,000 per person but experts predict malaysia airlines and

welcome back. 7:45. we're following breaking news. we're getting reports of an explosion in san leandro. it happened about 30 minutes

ago on doolittle drive and davis street. still not clear what exploded. but one viewer told us debris flew about a quarter mile. leam county fire department says there are no injuries to report so far. we have ktvu's brian flores heading there now. he will have a live report on everything coming up shortly. pg&e says it expects to face federal criminal charges as a result of the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. the blast killed eight people, injured dozens and destroyed 38 homes back in september of 2010. the utility has been accused of pour record-keeping, poor maintenance and failure to identify safety threats. pg&e sold the securities and exchange commission, it expects prosecutors to file criminal charges any day now. >> nothing can bring back the lives that were lost, the --

the ruin that occurred. if pg&e is -- if the u.s. attorney determines that there's criminal negligence, then certainly criminal charges should be filed. >> pg&e released the statement apologizing again for the disaster. since the blast, the company has launched a massive effort to test and repair all of the pipeline. 7:46. well, a thrilling season for stanford's men's basketball team has ended. the cardinals had a heartbreaking loss in the sweet 16. >> and now they beat pac 12 sanford. >> yeah. 10th-seeded sanford was ushered out of the tournament by dayton last night. final score, 82-72. way to go, johnny dawkins. one stanford star was just overcome with emotion when that final buzzer sound. >> it was tough.

beat the warriors, 99-90. 7:48. now back to the license we told you about just minutes ago. brian flores has just arrived on the scene of an explosion. this is in san leandro at dolittle drive and davis streets. what can you tell us? >> reporter: one person is just lucky to be arrive this morning. take a look at the damage from this explosion, if you will. one person from what we understand was sitting inside this honda accord just taking a quick nap before he started to work when all of a sudden, some time of cylinder, a propane cylinder flew across dolittle drive andlanded on top of this car where this man was sleeping. this came from a nearby construction company right across the street. this happened around 7:13 this morning. i want to bring in paul tavares who works here at bay fab metals. this is crazy. your employee is very lucky to be alive. >> i was in shock. i was sitting in the office. i heard and explosion.

i thought a truck hit the building. i came out and we came out to try to see what's going on and -- i thought it was an abandoned car. and then i realized it was my employee's car. i walked you. i was in shock. when i saw him standing there, i was surprised that he's still alive. >> reporter: did anyone from the construction company come over . >> i ran over there. somebody pointed that way. i ran over there and said did you have an explosion? one of the employees said yes. i said what was it? he said a propane tank. i said, i think i know where it is at. follow me. it's one of my employees. it almost killed one of my employees. i think he's in shock. he's okay. he's starting to come back. pain in his arm. i didn't see any cuts. i know they a lot of glass all

over his head. it probably missed his head. >> reporter: this is a normal routine for him. >> gets here early to beat the traffic. we start at 7:30 on fridays. he was getting ready to get up, heard the explosion and he -- he said it felt like 30 seconds. it was probably shorter than that. it went right through his car. you look at the side of the door. it's crazy. >> reporter: come take a walk with me. as we look at the propane tank underneath the red truck. any idea how it got here? >> it's a scrap yard. >> reporter: okay. >> there's been a couple of issues in the past. there's been fires. this is the first time i've ever seen something like this happen. i mean, even i'm in shock and i didn't go through this. i'm lucky my employee is still alive. >> reporter: very lucky, indeed. that's what's going on off the 800 block of dolittle drive. one person very lucky to be arrive -- alive. very lucky. he was just sleeping in his car

that, tori. take a look at this damage right away. take a look at this. one man was simply sleeping inside his car taking a quick snooze before he goes into work. this is a daily routine before he goes into work at bay fab metals. all of a sudden, some type of cylinder with some type of propane tank comes from across the street at a metal recycling plant, it explodes and flies across dolittle lands on top of this car and barely hits the man. that man who works here only had minor scrapes and scratches on his head. he was take on a nearby hospital. he's expected to be okay. you are just laying down. all of a sudden this propane tank comes in like a missile and land on top of the car. hear from an employee who heard the explosion from across the street. >> i was in shock. i was sitting in the office. i heard an explosion. it felt hike an explosion -- like an ploeks.

we came out to see -- an explosion. we came out to see. when i walked up i was in shock. >> reporter: the employee named jose is just lucky to be alive. want to go to a chopper shot right now if we can of the metal recycling business across the street. unclear how far is traveled. but it traveled pretty far again. as we take a look at the damage, this is the propane tank underneath the red truck as you can see. it landed on top of the car landed on the red truck. in terms of the damages from any businesses there doesn't appear to be any damage to the business besides the car. this is a brand-new car. san leandro fire and police are here. but the fire department is deciding to leave because there wasn't technically an explosion. this is has turned into a police investigation. we'll bring you an update as soon as we find more

suspend him. yee has refused to resign because he will not be paid if he does so. we know that on wednesday, the day of his arrest, we had darrell steinberg making an open plea to him, asking him to leave and not burden his colleagues with his troubles. yee was arrested by the fbi in a criminal sting operation that also netted a notorious chinatown gangster. yesterday yee's attorney read a letter from his client to the current secretary of state in california announcing his withdrawal from the race. >> it's a personal choice. that's the choice he has made without any political implications. it's the personal thing he wanted to do. >> reporter: more details about yee's alleged trafficking and firearms have surfaced. the fbi criminal complaint accuses yee of conspiracy to illegally import firearms

shocked. >> i was shocked, stunned, saddened. the allegations are serious. >> keith jackson's son, brandon, is also accused in the fbi complaint. it says that jackson told undercover agents that his son was shipping 300 pounds of marijuana to memphis, tennessee each month and it states that the jacksons and sullivan solicited an undercover fbi agent to provide cocaine for them to sell. stay with ktvu for the latest on state senator leland yee and others charged in the case. we're bring you the latest on air and online as it happens. we have developing news in east san jose. police are investigating a suspicious death. now, aen in call came in last night about 7:40 about a possible body discovered at this home on aborn road. when police arrived, they found

a man's body. so far, we don't know the man he's name -- man's name or how he died. but police are treating this as a suspicious death and homicide investigators were there as a matter of protocol. a north bay slaughterhouse closed due to a health scare will reopen under new management. federal regulators have approved plans to reopen the plant on april 7th. it was owned by rancho feeding corporation but shut down after voluntary recalling nearly 9 million pounds of meat. marin sun farms will take over onlationrations which is -- operations, which is still being investigated for failing to follow inspection rules. washington state is bracing for more sad news, a steep rise in the death toll following that massive mudslide. at least 25 people are known to have died when the rain-soaked hillside collapsed on saturday. at least 90 people are still

missing. so far, everyone who has been found alive was recovered within the first few hours. still, rescuers are holding out hope for a miracle and refuse to call it a recovery operation. >> we're not gonna run, big, huge heavy equipment over areas where we may collapse something, where we could have a survivor. now, i want to brace everybody that that chance is very slim but we haven't given up. >> the body of a 4-month-old baby girl was found yesterday with the scope of the tragedy sinking in, some people living in the area are angry with local officials for refusing to let them join the search immediately after the slide when the chances to find survivors were greatest. today more lowell volunteers will head out to help with the relief efforts. the american red cross says nine more volunteers are going to provide support and comfort people waiting for information on missing loved ones. if you would like to help, the red cross says the best way is

the rich 3407d teacher you -- richmond teacher accused of sexually abusing his students is due in court. police arrested ronald guinto

earlier this month. if he could spend of rest of his life in prison if convicted. his arrest came two months after starting his job at -- at richmond's mira vista elementary. the alleged abuse happened during field trips while he was a teacher at his previous school. the scandal has prompted big changes in the hiring procedures for the contra costa unified school district. a booming internet fad called revenge porn may soon be a federal crime. revenge porn is when someone posts lewd video or photos of a non-consenting person, usually it's a jilted lover or a hacker. congresswoman jackie speier is about to introduce a bill to cillize postings like that. california state law already makes it a crime to share this porn. but most of the websites can't be forced to remove the content because there is a loophole in the law. however, congresswoman spear's legislation would close that

loophole. camp mather will remain open after all. earlier this month, a 90-year- old camp sent letters out saying it may be forced to scale back the number of campers who go to visit because they have water problems. the carm was evacuated last summer during the rim fire and the water line that carries the camp's water. it was damaged in that fire. however, camp leaders are saying the problems have been fixed and the camp will open. the lake tau toe visit oors's authority may -- the lake tahoe visitors' authority may cancel their fireworks show yearly. a couple filed paperwork regarding this citing pollution. >> it's really sad that a couple of people could destroy such a family tradition.

>> the couple says they want to protect the lake and have no intention of trying to stop the fireworks. they say they just want proper permitting and cleanup enforced. officials say they will wait another week in hopes of settling the lawsuit before canceling the event all together. let's get everybody where they need to go. i know you have the chopper working. you are still watching san leandro. i want to show you a picture and brian flores is on the scene of this car hit by a cylinder from a nearby scrap yard. there is the car and there's our crew. there's sid down there. you can see him. how are you? >> there's where the car is. newschopper2 is gonna take us down the street. this is pretty incredible here, to the scrap yard where the cylinder allegedly flew from. you can see the police vehicle there in the scrap yard. that's where the piece of the cylinder came and hit that car we just saw. brian flores will have a live report from the scene.

it's incredible that no one was seriously injured. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, you can see the traffic is backed you for about a -- backed up for a five, seven-minute delay. the entire drive time is 5, 7 minutes. not bad at all. 24 from pleasant hill road to the caldecott down to 8 minutes. 880 from 238 in san leandro to thorton avenue, fremont, 13 minutes. that's good drive time right there. let's go to rosemary. plenty of gray out there. giving you a live look over the east bay where we have a little bit of blue sky out there. we'll be clearing out to partly cloudy skies for most. over the north bay i think we'll be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy and even the possibility of a few scattered showers. take a look. we're mostly gray here. a little bit of drizzle falling under the radar, seeing it in areas like santa rosa and concord. i don't have to go very far north to pick up more, though. take a look at this. crescent city, the only area reporting steady light rain. it's gotten as far down as

mendocino and you can see above the hills there just east of clearlake of, we've got some scattered shower activity going on. this system will be working over the source of the day but we'll remain dry for the bay area. at least mainly dry. i think the north bay may see just a light passing shower. but there's the front. it is going to move through saturday morning. and we're all going to get wet at some point. i'm gonna show you this model. it doubles as a future cast model bringing in projections and it will tell us when the rain will arrive. picking it up, late tonight, see a few sprinkles over the north bay, a possibility. it's really in the overnight hours when it begins to fill in. by 3:00, 4:00 in the morning, now you can see plenty of green over the area, even picking up accumulation by 6:00, 7:00, it's shifting into the central bay and by 9:00 to 10:00, it looks like it's into the south bay. for the morning hours, the light rain to moderate rain picking up and steady.

police in livermore hope surveillance video will help

solve a robbery. police say a man robbed a woman an at atm wednesday night on first street. you can see the man's red sedan. look in the upper right corner of your screen. police say he demanded the woman's money and stole her cell phone. she was not hurt. a woman ordered by the courts to stay away from sfo was arrested again for being seen at the airport. she was arrested on wednesday after being seen at terminal three in the backage claim -- baggage claim. hartman has police she has cancer and wanted to go to a warm place but her story has not been verified. the city skyline challenge continues at san francisco's riot regency this morning.

well, good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." we're live in san leandro. will you look at this? breaking news from san leandro. this is where alameda county firefighters responded to this explosion on dolittle drive near davis. look at the wrecked car. debris landed on top of the car, almost crushed a brand-new car and a man had been sleeping there a little while before that. some minor injuries reported. it's just an incredible story. ktvu's brian flores is there. he's getting all of the details. he will bring you a live report later this hour.

friday morning, it's march 28th. i'm dave clark. let's talk about your weather now. steve's off. we have rosemary. >> good morning. it's a bit of a gloomy start. a few peeks of sunshine and drizzle. for your morning, mostly cloudy. santa rosa reported some drizzle earlier. concord had some. oakland, the roads were wet really early on my way in. we know it's out there. mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon. we'll leave in the slight chance at a few passing showers over the north bay as well. 53 degrees right now in concord. 52 walnut creek. widespread 50s around the bay. 57 oakland, 54 redwood city. 52 in livermore. 55 half moon bay. one last stop here, santa rosa and novato in the low 50s as well as napa. partly to mostly cloudy. especially over the north bay today. temperatures in the afternoon a lot like yesterday for some of us slightly warmer. 70 degrees expected in livermore. 67 in oakland.

64 san francisco. mid-60s santa rosa, 66 san rafael and low 60s with partly cloudy skies to mostly cloudy skies at the coast. we do have a new storm coming in and in fact we're going to be wet for your saturday. i'm going to show you the timing on this system talk more about what's happening in the sierra with some additional snow coming our way as well. more on that in just a bit. good morning, sal. >> good morning. traffic is going to be okay. if you are driving in many areas in fact, it's become a little bit better. but we do have a little bit of slow traffic in hayward -- in oakland. northbound 880 after 238 heading up to downtown oakland. also looking at the commute here, bay bridge is cleared out. very nice coming into the city. there was a minor crash at the toll plaza but it's not causing any slow traffic. 880 southbound near alvarado, they were clearing a crash there. this is northbound 101 as you come up to the -- to the interstate 880.

this is 580 coming up to the bridge. these traffic cameras are doing very well. 8:33. let's go back to the desk. >> all right. now to the breaking news in san leandro we told you about. a man is very lucky to be alive literally after flying metal from an explosion almost crushed him and badly damaged his car. this happened about an hour ago. ktvu's brian flores is right there. you've got the incredible stories and the pictures. tell us about it, brian. >> reporter: boy, dave, very lucky to be alive is an understatement in this case. take a look at the damage from this car this morning. a man, imagine just an employee here who works at bay fab met at here was taking a -- metals here was taking a nap before he went into work. all of a sudden, some time of propane tank from 350 yards across the street over at a metal recycling plant explodes. it flies like a missile projectile lands, lands on top of the car and -- of the car and the man lucky to be a --

tosh alive. a few scratches on his face. the man very lucky to be alive. very damage to the car. this is a brand-new car by the way. a honda civic. but hear from the person who heard the explosion moments after, actually the person's boss. he said it sounded pretty bad. >> i was in shock. , i was sitting in the office. i heard an explosion. i come out with my other two employees. we come out and try to see what's going on. we looked at the car. i actually thought it was an abandoned car. i realized it was my employee's car. i was in shock. >> reporter: i'm sure a lot of people were in shock especially the employee jose who has been here quite a few years. cal/osha has been here. they are at the metal recycling plant across the the -- across

the street. back out here live, take a look. this damage in this scene, pretty incredible. this is the propane tank that we mentioned. part of it. the other piece is across the street at the recycling plan. but again, this man very lucky to be alive. a few minor scratches and scrapes. he was sent to the hospital. we spoke to his boss. he's wondering about his car. wondering how he will get home. he's very lucky to be alive. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> incredible story, thank you, brian. happening today -- big changes may be coming to muni. a vote this morning may overhaul the muni system. changing most of muni's roots. alex savidge is live at san francisco city hall to tell us about this plan to improve efficiency and service. >> reporter: good morning. i just spoke recently with a spokesman for the municipal

transportation agency. he tells me this project makes someone reliable. right now, they are in the middle a meeting. at the end of the meeting, they will be voting on a sers of sweeping changes to the system and are responding to feedback from riders. among other things, routes will be eliminated, others will be added. some will be realigned. this plan is known as the transit effectiveness project. it will be the first big big service overhaul. they will vote whether to green light this project. this was developed with a lot of public input. in some cases, buses would pick up more often. other routes, less often. there mob more express -- would be more express lines. they are trying to stream line

a system that some say can be unreliable. >> we're trying to ensure that this is meeting today the need of san francisco. we've had a system in place for hundreds of years. we're trying to make sure it's up to the 21st century needs of san francisco. >> reporter: also as part of this plan, the mta would make infrastructure changes along a number of the routes here in san francisco to improve pedestrian safety. an important issue in the city. the price tag for this project stands at about $44 million. if the mta does give the go ahead, the first phases of this proecket j would start by this -- project would start by this summer. things would be completed by 2016. transit officials are meeting at city hall. there will be a happens for the riding public to weigh in. at the end of the meeting, the board will vote on this overhaul to the muni system.

alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. 8:38. happening today, president barack obama is in saudi arabia meeting with the king. but the president is not expecting the same warm welcome he received in europe this week. kyla campbell is live in washington, d.c. to explain the tension heading into today's talks. kyla? >> reporter: saudi arabia's king is frustrated with the u.s. for not taking military action in syria and for not being tougher on iran. the white house just sent me information saying that while the u.s. is pursuing a nuclear deal with iran, officials are still concerned about iran's behavior when it comes to nuclear ambixes. as -- ambiggses. as for the civil war, they won't say whether the u.s. changed its opposition to the saudis wanting to send troops into syria. the white house says that president obama will reassure the king that the u.s. is not neglecting the key ally in the gulf. the leaders are meeting for just a few hours today.

everyone's bracing for bad news. the death toll is expected to go up sharply. at least 25 people are already known to have died. 90 are still missing. lawmakers in sacramento may vote as early as this morning to suspend state senator leland yee. that's after he was arrested on wednesday an federal charges of corruption and gun trafficking. yesterday, yee withdrew from the race for california's secretary of state. so far, he has not responded to calls to resign as senator. in san leandro, a new car, this one was almost destroyed by flying debris from an explosion. a cylinder landed on top of this car from a nearby recycling facility. a man sitting inside the car got away with a couple of scratches. somehow he's lucky to be alive. brian flores is right there and will bring you a live report on that in just about eight

minutes from now. pg&e says it expects to face federal criminal charges as a result of the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. the blast killed eight people, injured dozens and destroyed 38 homes back in september of 2010. the utility has been accused of poor recordkeeping, poor maintenance and failure to identify safety threats. pg&e told the s.e.c. it expects prosecutors to file criminal charges any day now. nothing can bring back the lives that were lost, the -- the ruin that occurred. if pg&e is -- if the u.s. attorney determines there's criminal negligence, then certainly criminal charges should be filed. pg&e released a statement apologizing again for the disaster and since the blast, the company has launched a massive effort to test and repair all of its pipelines. 8:45.

in the midst of all of the stories we talk about, some of them heavy, as sal comes back, there's news now a local high school star is now an oakland raider. >> worth a mention. maurice jones drew from della sal. i'm sure the guy on sports will talk about it. de la salle high school, we know that. traffic on the roads is light. you are wondering how we can mention that? look at highway 24, a beautiful commute to oakland. it's about a five-minute drive. this is the bay bridge toll plaza, we've cleared out. it's looking good coming into san francisco. even the nimitz freeway and the south bay are looking very good. today we haven't had much of a crowd. a couple of slowdowns here and there but nothing major. so go ahead and enjoy it. don't drive too fast, though. let's go to rosemary. good morning to you.

overcast skies giving you a look over the bay. it's quite gloomy out there. we'll be partly sunny to partly cloudy for the second half of your day. today, the calm before the storm. take a look at all of that moisture that continues to move in through the bay area. could even squeeze out a few passing showers, especially over the north bay. all in all, mainly dry for your friday. temperatures will be on the mild side. i love to show the water vapor because it helps us see what's going on. easy to see those bright pinks. that's the higher elf will of moisture in the air. that will be sliding south over the last 12 hours. eventually, it will make it into the bay area by the morning. you can see the center of circulation in the pacific. this is the next storm coming our way. the front is expected to move in. it looks like in the overnight hours for the north bay. for today, a mix of sun and clouds. we'll leave in a few sprinkles follow the north bay just to cover our basis. by tomorrow morning, the rain will be steady and soaking as we move through the first part

another update on the breaking news we've beenle iting you -- been telling you about. debris from an explosion landed on top of a brand-new car from a metal recycling plant. brian flores was the first report otherren the scene and joins us live from san leandro for another update. >> reporter: an incredible story. take a look at the damage real quick if you can. this is where this employee of bay fab metals was taking a quick nap before he went into work around p:15. when part of a propane tank launched from a metal recycling plant about 350 yards across the street, went through the car and then landed right underneath this red truck. if we go to more video, employees say jose ka tee yowas taking a -- castillo was taking a nap before work. there was a boom or some type of explosion that employees heard. they came running out and

looked to the left and that's where they saw this brand-new car heavily damaged, honda civic. hear from one of the employees of bay fab describe what happened. >> i was in shock. i was sitting in the office. i heard and explosion which felt like the building shook. i thought a truck hit it. i came out with my other two employees. we looked at the car. i thought it was an abandoned car. i realized it was my employee's car. i was in shock. >> as were many people. san leandro police and san leandro fire did respond here. but we understand now that this investigation is now being led by the alameda county fire department. we should also mention at least from what we heard from san leandro police is that cal/osha has been called here to investigate. as we take it back out here live, this is an incredible story. one man lucky to be alive, taking a quick look in his car. from what we understand, minor scratches and scrapes on his body. a little bit of pain on his

arm. but other than that, he's going to be okay. we're live here in san leandro. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. well, nba star tim duncan is now among the people who think that the claremont resort hotel in berkeley is haunted. there is a legend that a 6-year- old girl who died there roams the hallways. tim duncan and the san antonio spurs stayed at the claremont before last saturday's game against the warriors. duncan as i he and a teammate heard strange noises, heards the sounds of a baby in up with of the rooms. he now -- in one of the rooms. he said he got the chills. he would rather not stay at the hotel again. apparently, got over it, though. the spurs went on to beat the warriors, 99-90. a thrilling see ston for stanford men's basketball team has come to an end after the cardinals' heartbreaking loss in the sweet 16. >> and now they beat pac 12

that rather than using the pretax dollars. they can be used for transit costs. >> other options include subsidizing up to $75 a month in commuting costs or providing private shuttles like the ones a lot of technology companies are using. they may also come one an alternative plan to get workers out of their cars. a florida woman's cell phone video capturing a man tailgating her getting a lot of attention because of what happens next. she posted the video online for her coworkers to see, dubbing it road neck road rage instant car raw. she said she was going the speed limit and other cars prevented her from getting over. it was after the other driver's attempted -- second attempt to cut her off, it all comes to an end.
