a quarter after 5. he was met by a woman who was upset with the media attention and then he was picked up by a man. police spokesperson confirmed chris culliver was arrested this morning in san jose. investigators say he was driving a white mustang when he hit a bicycle and say tried to drive off. a witness followed him. he hit the witness' car and a few moments later the witness blocked his car. police showed up and arrested chris culliver. a cornerback for the san francisco 49ers. investigators searched the car and found brass knuckles and then they arrested chris culliver. we are told the bicyclist was treated at the scene and released. chris culliver released 45 minutes ago. we tried to ask him what

happened but he had no comment and we will have more. stay with us for the latest on this story. live in san jose, cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. mark ibanez joins us now. this isn't the first time he had trouble off the field. >> no, it isn't. this has been quite a day in the nfl. earlier this morning one of the biggest stars, desean jackson went to cal, and he was released from the philadelphia eagles for having gang connections. now the 49ers have major off field problems of themselves as you heard. it is chris culliver who caused a stir a year ago at the super bowl with several anti-gay comments. he was chastised. this time he does have major problems with the law. according to san jose police after 10:00 a.m. this morning a bicyclist hit by

a car. apparently driven by chris culliver and another vehicle followed chris culliver and cornered him and prevented him from leaving the scene at which time chris culliver threatened that man with brass knuckles. police arrived on the scene and arrested him and some of the charges, felony hit and run, reckless driving, felony possession of the brass knuckles. as far as a player concern, 49ers thin at cornerback. so, you know, his future with the team in jeopardy and he missed last year with a knee injury. that is the situation. his future with the team, i don't think a lot of people would trade that future with san francisco. >> thank you. we have breaking news right now in washington state. officials are holding a news conference right now following the massive mudslide. let's listen in. the latest numbers.

>> at night the victims are transported to the medical examiner office. autopsies are performed. the process of identifications takes place. if possible. the identificationings process has been very, very challenging. -- information process has been very, very, challenging. once identified we send a chaplain to the family and after that a medical examiner staff person calls the victim's family to arrange for a funeral home and then do we send out a press release identifying the victim. back to the matter of a daily victim count. like the families, the media, and you folks and the folks watching on tv, i have shared the frustration on the number being a moving target over the last six days. the victim count should be

announced only by the medical examiner's office. and only once a day. so that everybody is working off the same information. so from here on out, every day at 4:30 p.m. the medical examiner office will give the victim count to the incident command center here in arlington. they will pass that information on to whoever is doing the 6:00 p.m. briefing for you folks. that will be the only announcement on a daily basis on the victim count in the medical examiner office. yesterday afternoon at this time the total was 14. as you may have seen over night. three victims were brought in over night, bringing the total to 17. this morning the total was still 17. and that is your total for today. the total is still 17. that is the official number from the medical examiner office and that is the only

number we will give out. the operations folks made me aware this afternoon they did locate one more victim in the debris field but we are not including that in the total till they reach the medical examiner office. finally -- >> you have been listening to a news conference outside of seattle where the effort to locate victims from the massive mudslide continues. we have ben hearing about the process of identifying the victims and why there has been confusion on how many people have been confirmed dead. the latest number is 17. one more body has been found but hasn't been added to the count. as soon as we get more information on what is happening we will pass that along. continuing coverage now, california state senator leland yee was tripped of -- stripped of his power today, two days

after his arrest on corruption, bribery and gun charges. they called on leland yee to resign but leland yee refused so they took action. ktvu's mike mibach is live in san francisco where the calls continue for leland yee to step down. >> reporter: suspended but no resignation and no sign of leland yee outside his house here. a few blocks away we found house minority leader nancy pelosi who says that leland yee should step aside. >> today in sacramento a debate about scandal. >> reporter: only to be followed by a 28-1 vote. three senators suspended, including california state senator leland yee. >> innocent till proven guilty but i wish he would leave and spare this proud institution having to be associated with any of this.

>> i feel -- really, very disappointed. very sad for him and his family. >> house minority leader nancy pelosi said she is stunned with the allegations and believes he should resign. >> people of san francisco and this area have treated him with great respect. out of that respect he should step aside. >> reporter: leland yee's attorney released a statement saying suspension is the right step for now and is appropriatep in a system that presumes the innocence of the accused. >> they are freaking out. that is what is happening. they are freaking out right now. >> reporter: she questions why rod wright and ron calderon were not slapped with a suspension before the charnel -- charges against leland yee. >> that speaks to the leadership. that is a issue of concern. >> this reflects on three

individuals. >> reporter: he says his party is strong despite the suspensions. >> shows a human frailty about greed and needing money and willing to violate the road to the office to get extra money. >> -- we just lost mike there. governor jerry brown said given the circumstances of the quases and today's -- cases and today's suspensions the best way to restore public confidence is for them to resign. as we mentioned leland yee and two other lawmakers will continue to receive pay and benefits even though they have been suspended. law makers are already moving to change that in direct reaction tolyl loll's arrest -- leland yee's arrest. >> this process brought out the point that we need to have more tools on how to deal with

guinto. as did the school district leaders. >> surprised how young he was. he looks like a normal regular person. >> reporter: ron guinto is accused of molesting young boys who he took on field trips when he worked as a teacher. the field trips didn't add up. >> we didn't go here, we went somewhere else instead. that is when the whole thing started and we were shocked. >> reporter: a phone call between students spurred an investigation into the allegations. >> he got nervous, we put the phone on speaker. >> reporter: police arrested ron guinto at his school classroom last month. from lewd acts with a child to kidnapping. his attorney spoke out for the first time today. >> he is depressed as anybody would be. >> reporter: he asked the judge for more time to review the

new at 6:00 p.m. two people from the east bay in skateboarding accidents within three days of each other. one died and the other is in a coma and that man's family remains at his bed side. ktvu's john sasaki reports one thing could have made a difference in both accidents. >> reporter: he was a star athlete in high school before graduating in june. >> he is so smart. >> but now he studies are on hold after a skateboarding accident on march 20. >> these teens feel invincible. >> i talked to his mother at the hospital this morning. >> he has been in a medically induced coma since then.

helmets. >> the helmets are designed to break and fracture and absorb the energy that would have to go someplace else. >> reporter: california law requires helmets while riding bicycles and on skateboards. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. officials in the bay area and across california are set to launch a major crack down on texting and using handheld phones while driving. april is distracted driving awareness month. police will join 200 law enforcement agencies and the california highway patrol to crack down on drivers. in concord officers are planning a special high visibility enforcement operation starting on thursday. join ktvu and make the pledge to text later. we have a section dedicated to the campaign, including more information on the penalties if drivers are caught. look under hot topics.

he was saved by the bell. jose castillo inspected the damage to his car hours after an explosion at a metal plant shot a propane tack into his car. you can see the shattered glass and the roof ripped open. jose castillo was napping inside the car minutes before. luckily his cell phone alarm went off and he 3rd explosion -- he heard the explosion. >> shocked. but i am alive. thank god. >> firefighters say the propane tank missed jose castillo by a matter of feet. cal-osha is now investigating. a dry day but more rain is on the way. ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin is here with the time table for the next storm system. >> rain back in the forecast. storm system number two you see the clouds thickening up. the clouds by tomorrow everything where.
