♪ . the second storm of the week moving across the bay area. coming up where the heaviest rain is falling and also the timing of another storm showing up in the five-day forecast. >> reporter: downpours and some destruction. i'll show you areas hardest hit by today's rain storm. rained out. the oakland as and san francisco giants' game canceled. and a pesky flooding problem returns. rain hits the bay area.

with some storm clouds lingering overhead, the impacts of our wet weather on this stormy saturday. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken waynes. we're on stormwatch. mark tamayo is tracking the rain. but first, katie hue tess -- katie utehs is live in san francisco where the rain brought down a big tree. >> reporter: a crane was just here to remove the stump of the tree. i want to show you what's left. that giant tree behind me. it's a trin to the one that fell and while we desperately need the rain, today's storm also brought some destruction. >> i'm very sad. >> reporter: during the rain storm, this giant chinese elm toppled in san francisco's castro neighborhood, taking out power and gas lines on its way down. homeowner neil rosenbaum said work exposed extra soil near the tree base. >> my hunch, this heavy rain

washed down the street, oversaturated the soil and the roots couldn't hold it. >> reporter: fromup and utility -- from cleanup and utility crews, habitat for humanity volunteers in concord, many drudged or drove through the downpours. >> decided why don't i come out even in the rain and dope nate- - donate them? such a good cause. >> reporter: the home building organization is seachting new or used tools. >> we're here tomorrow as well. we're hoping people will come out and we're hoping for sunshine tomorrow. >> reporter: while some desire sunshine and better hair days, local farmers simply hope the seasons will straighten out. >> when it gets really hot and it's sunny for day, the -- like our winter crops, we lose the crops. it should be spring and winter and now it's winter and spring. >> reporter: pg&e craws tell me

they should -- crews tell me should be able to -- they should be able to restore power to the homes. want to give you a live look outside at the oakland estuary. the rain clouds are moving out of the bay area. mark tamayo is live outside. still storm clouds. >> the heaviest rain has moved out. we still have lingering activity. as you can see with the rainfall totals. you will see the numbers coming up. here is the live camera coming up. the persistent light to moderate rainfall still at this hour. as far as the rainfall totals over the past 24 hours, the numbers adding up especially across parts of the north bay. take a look at the numbers. san francisco coming up nearly .75. .72. look at san rafael. over 1 inch of rain. san jose, we're adding to the

total at .25. ben lomond over 1 inch of rain. some developments up to the north, the national weather service in sacramento issuing a tornado warning in the corning area. in place until 6:30. that's latest information. we'll bring that up for you. until about 6:30. it could be around interstate 5 for this part of the state already seeing pictures of a funnel cloud developing. that's a tornado not touching the ground but something, at least a concern at least in the short term with the severe thunderstorm in place. here is a closer look at the radar. the extreme northern portions of the north bay, not picking up as much rainfall. but still a scattered light mist or light showers for san francisco and oakland. moving the maps in the yellows and reds corresponding to heavy your downpours, los altos, sunnyvale and san jose and morgan hill. coming up at 6:20, the timing of another storm. we have low snow levels in the bay area the forecast.

we'll have that coming up at 6:20. >> thank you, mark. today's storm is great news for ski resorts in the sierra. forecasters predicting as much as 2 feet of snow with the higher elevations. as you can see in this state of interstate 80 at kingvale. this is where the highway patrol closed east lanes for a time earlier because of the road conditions. you can see how treacherous they are. there are chain requirements right there on both interstate 80 between nyak and truckee from the twin bridges to myers. the final bay bridge series game between the as and san francisco giants was a washout today. there are reports of flooding in the coaches' room which has had its share the problems with water and sewage coming up through the plumbing. parts of the coliseum are below sea level. there were problems twice last september due to heavy rain. you can download our ktvu weather app for the latest

forecast and stormtracker2 live radar. you can take it with you anywhere any time on your smartphone or tablet. police say an officer's gun accidentally went off today during an investigation into a stolen car in san francisco's north beach. take a look. you can see the bullet hole that was left in the vehicle. a police spokesman says at about 10:40. an officer approached this car which was stolen parked at montgomery and broadway streets with the driver still inside. when the suspect saw the officer, he started to drive off but a car door was still open. >> the motion of the vehicle caused the door to fling open striking the officer in the arm. at that time is when the impact caused the weapon to go off that the officer was holding, that suspect took off. >> the officer was not hurt. police recovered that car a short time later on clay street. but the driver is still on the loose. investigators say there's no evidence that that driver was hit by the bullet. ♪

>> a march and rally to denounce the death of a 28-year- old city college student shot and killed last week by police. alejandro nieta was shot in bernal heights report after officers were called there to report on a man with a gun. when officers arrived, they asked him to show his hands and he drew what looked like a gun and aimed it at the police. that's when they say they opened fire. it turned out niet was holding a taser. oerks say they don't believe -- organizations say they don't believe he pointed it at officers. a predawn accident in the east bay ended with a car hitting a house. take a look. it happened before 6:00 this morning in el sobrante near hilltop drive and renfru road. sheriff's deputies say the driver was airlifted to a hospital. no word on his condition. deputies with are still trying to figure out if this morning's wet weather might have played a role in the accident.

firefighters in southern california have evacuated now more than 80 people from their homes due to damage from last night's earthquake. crews in fullerton red tagged half a dozen homes and apartments as well as an apartment building after discovering cracks in the foundation and other dangerous conditions. the tremor caused rockslides, including one flipping a car as well as broken water mains and power outages. people as far as san diego felt the shoelt -- jolt. >> compared to rolling. it was a jolt. more scary. >> more than 100 aftershocks followed including a magnitude 4.1 that hit this afternoon. no reports, though, of injuries. some south bay volunteers got together today to say once a gang member not always a gang member. john sasaki shows us how the young people are getting rid of their colors and escaping the

life. >> it was resources and job support for young people. perhaps the most life-changing support came from the east side heroes. >> we invite teenagers. >> the east side heroes use gift cards to help coax young people to help get away from gang life. >> i've done a lot of things i don't really want to talk about. they are just things that i don't think no one should do. >> reporter: the 18-year-old brought in red gang clothes as he's transitioning out of gang life and becoming more involved in society. >> it feels good. every time i walk down the block, people are smiling at me. they are not trying to cross the street avoiding me. >> reporter: it's all about the colors. so much so that even a jerry rice 49er jersey can qualify. the sad thing, some of these kids don't know who jerry rice

is. that's how far removed the average life of a bay area young person they are when involved in gangs. >> oftentimes, what happens, these kids get shot and i've seen instances where kids have literally lost the use of their legs. they are young. i'm talking 17 to 21-year-olds. >> reporter: this woman escaped the gun life. >> i go to college, work, take care of my son. trying to give him a better future. >> reporter: for his gang clothes, enrique got movie passes. he wants to see the new cesar chavez movie. back to you. there are new details about the federal investigation that led to the arrest of state senator leland yee. court documents show the investigation started three years ago. that's when dwree's chief fund- raiser was introduced on and you undercover a -- an

undercover agents. court documents say the agent led yee to chow. the state suspended him yesterday. and today's san francisco's mayor joined a number of other politicians including the governor urging lee to resign. >> i have to agree and join the governor and senator feinstein and others that he should make that independent determination to resign. it's one that i think shoulds the public interest in mind first. i hope he remembers that and honors that. i think that's important. >> mayor ed lee said the public deserves a lawmaker who can focus on representing them instead of being distracted by criminal charges. patients at one of san francisco's largest hospitals are being warned they may have been exposed to hepatitis and hiv. the california pacific medical center has learned that equipment used to examine lungs and die jethive tract of -- digestive tract of some patients was not properly sterilized. the hospital said employees at the california street cpmc

new developments now in the deadly landslide in washington state. we just learned a few minutes ago that one body was found today and the number unaccounted for has dropped dramatically. authorities say 30 people now remain unaccounted for. that's down from 90 yesterday. as for the search itself, it's been made even more difficult by yet another day of rain. eric rasmussen is in arlington with new video of the rescued and recovery ef. >> reporter: it's been one week since anyone caught in the landslide has been pulled out

alive. that did not seem to change the determination of workers digging through the mud and trees again today. >> at this point, everybody is tired. there's people out here that you can't get them to go home. they are looking for loved ones. >> reporter: firefighters say these borkers turned to face an american flag found in the rubble now hanging from a tree at half mast in the middle of this wide debris field. at 10:37, the exact moment the landslide wiped away homes and took so many lives, everything stopped but the rain. >> please observe a moment of silence for the victims and loved ones from the landslide. >> reporter: a minute later, the loud and difficult work resumed. crews are sorting and bagging personal bloggings pulled from the rubble. other -- belongings pulled from the rubble. others sifting one scoop at a time. washington national guard shared its own images from the search lending its hand in an effort expected to continue for weeks. volunteers with "operation barbecue relief" comforted first responders with good food. >> we're getting a warm meal to them and yet we're seeing exhausted people and hearing stories that are amazing. >> reporter: there's been some concern about additional landslides, geologists have

been putting tinfoil on the sides of trees so they can see any movement from a distance despite one brief false alarm yesterday, there was no interruption in the work going on today. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. >> anderic is tweeting. you can follow him for any major developments 24 hours a day. family and friends of a san francisco general hospital patient found dead in a stairwell are grateful for the review. it was ordered by ed lee in response to the death of lynn spaulding. these -- she disappeared from her hospital room. her body was found 17 years later. they set up a safety operation center. >> we have to work on some of these right away, especially the coordination of security at the hospital. >> the spaulding family said, "hope the recommendations will

be swiftly implemented so as to prevent another tragedy ever from occurring again." martin luther king iii viewed the bronze sculpture today for the first time. his father and mother depicted in that sculpture along with president lincoln and 22 other leaders. >> this is a great sculpture, not just a good or decent. it's a great sculpture because it truly per fon sees women and men who have changed our world. >> sculpture mario presented king with the proof. >> this, as i said, is a tool to educate young people, to educate older people. to educate students.

and it inspires you, especially if you begin to think about the work that's not done. >> the freedom center in atlanta is expected to take the sculpture of the kings and display it there possibly in the historic district of atlanta. once again, we are on stormwatch. second storm moving in producing rain, moderate to heavy. some more severe weather up to the north. once again, a tornado warning posted up to our north close to -- between corning and orland. this was a weather service tweet, a picture coming out of the thunderstorm responsible for this warning. this is in place until 6:30. a few more minutes there's a chance it could be extended. that's the latest toward glenn and tehama counties. you can see the rainfall right now beginning to move to the south and lots of snow piling up towards the sierra. that wasn'ter storm warning in place until 5:00 tomorrow

morning. closer inspection of the live doppler sweep, you can see the green indicating the mist or a few light showers as we come in closer and moving the maps to the yellows and roads corresponding to sunnyvale and milpitas, santa cruz mountains closer to morgan hill and gill ray, the rate is picking up as well over the past hour. in terms of the forecast, we have this, the cloud cover out there for tonight and march, 2014, winding up on a very wet note. we had the first storm on wednesday. second storm for today. another one that's scheduled to move into the region on monday and tuesday. so we have a little bit of a break for tonight. tonight, mostly cloudy skies. the chance, a fairly good chance of scattered showers looking out towards san francisco and out towards union square. tomorrow clouds and sun and then the extended more rain and a big dropoff in temperatures with possibly some snow in the bay area peaks. overnight lows first thing in the morning will be in the 40s out there with partly cloudy

skies, cool conditions. here is the overall weather, the cold front moving across the area. showers move out late tonight leaving us with partly cloudy skies. over the next three, four hours, we're tracking rain showers. tomorrow will be dry with partly cloudy conditions. here is a our forecast model showing you the lingering showers. tomorrow, partly cloudy skies and then on monday, our next storm moves onshore for monday afternoon. we'll have to watch that for the as home opener. tomorrow, mainly in the upper 50s to low 60s for afternoon highs. san jose will go with 63. san mateo, 61. half moon bay, 59. a look ahead to your five-day forecast, this is active for late march into april. you can see rain develops for monday. cold showers on tuesday with a possibility of thunderstorms. we could be tracking shower chances by thursday. it's a lot to keep an eye on over the next few days. possibly snow in the local hills. >> thank you, mark.

joe joins us now talking a little sharks. >> yeah. very few regular season games. still some things left to accomplish. the sharks are already a playoff team. a noon west coast start in denver where colorado goalie varlamov was the difference after the aves scored in the first minute and a half, sharks countered on a power play. that was thornton to pavelski. it took san jose a period to find its rhythm. that -- fine at score, 3-2. sharks could fall back to number three in the west depending upon what anaheim does tonight. multiple things combining the as and giants game. the sewers were not working properly. the game was washed out.
