>> i'm dave clark. we get to talk about weather and traffic. there is a lot to talk about. i would take an umbrella. there's steve. >> wait five minutes. you will have sun and then get some hail, thunder, lightning. some hail reported in napa county. it looks like for the morning hours. really dynamic system moving onshore. the system that came between half moon bay and san gregorio heading to palo alto, maybe belmont. that will be brief, heavy rain. also morgan hill to gilroy, good, old-fashioned rain. nothing severe there. the line has moved out. from hercules right there. that's what popped over to benicia, hercules, pinole.

that's moved off. there was hail in mill valley. it looks like things have calmed for now. pretty cold rain, petaluma, santa cruz, tecate. some snow up at cobb mountain at 2700 feet. this is a very cold rain falling to the north. cold air is not only in place buts also on the way. santa rosa, 44. 43, livermore. san jose, 44. antioch is 42 degrees. and even the city is at 48. so it will be a cold day. any sunbreaks will only help juice up the atmosphere. showers, occasionally, some of these will be severe. this is the key. this swinging in is gonna give us intense rain. and the cold core of the low will come in. plenty going on. off-and-on rain. some of it will be heavy. possibility of more thunderstorms. 50s on the temperatures. here's sal. the rain usually means more collisions, sometimes flooding. we're looking at the south bay

and traffic in the santa clara valley looks okay. a little bit slow on 101. 85 is not that slow as we look at the peninsula, 101 looks okay getting into the south bay. but there is a big mess in the santa cruz mountains. northbound 17, we've had a slow slow traffic coming in because of a crash near the summit. there was a crash reported southbound in the same area. if you come into the valley on 17, please give yourself extra time. we also have a new crash reported on highway 4 right at 80, a car hydroplaned and other vehicles may have hit this car, one car went over the side. this is westbound 4 just near highway 80 in hercules. let's go to live pictures. 880 traffic here, looks good. bay bridge toll plaza, looking like 30 to 35-minute drive time into san francisco. 7:04. back to the desk. this morning, people around the bay area are cleaning up from yesterday's storm as more rain heads our way. tara moriarty is in berkeley

with a look at the damage left behind by a large lightning strike there. good morning. >> reporter: a lot of people who live in this neighborhood say it sounded like be a huge -- incd a huge -- an incredible bolt of lightning. this is a huge piece of wood from the tree that you can see behind me or what was once the tree. this used to be 85 feet tall with huge limbs. no more. the bolt struck the near yesterday afternoon near holly and buena. the impact destroyed a parked car, it ripped roofs apart and blew out windows throughout the area. >> there was a huge lightning flash. all of the air outside of our windows seemed to go yellow and white for an instant. and there was a huge roll of

thunder. it felt like the house was shaking. >> reporter: luckily, the lightning bolt didn't spark a fire but it did knock out power in the neighborhood. the debris scattering over a three-mile radius. the cleanup is extensive. later this morning, we're expecting roofing repairmen out here. it was raining off and on, so definitely the roofs will need to be repaired so more damage doesn't happen. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. in marin cleanup is underway after two redwoods took a beating. in sausalito a tree hit by lightning basically exploded sending chunks of wood flying. fortunately, the woman who lives in the home where the windows were shattered was not home at the time. >> i would have been sitting there. i definitely would have been hurt if i had been sitting there. >> in mill valley, another redwood fell on a house, causing major damage.

but no injuries. neighbors say storm drains backed up and made the cleanup extensive. planes were struck by lightning. none of the pilots requested special assistance. the planes were from alaska, united and united emirates. there could be more close calls with steve reporting another chance of thunderstorms. we checked in with sheriff's deputies in nevada county. they are still searching for the sierra for a missing 25- year-old snowboarder from here in the bay area last seen yesterday afternoon. he was last seen in the castle peak area across 880 near bor rial mt -- boirial mountain --

boreal mountain resort. his father says his son is physically fit and he had the necessary equipment to survive the cold. >> according to his father, he knows the area and knows the sierra hut. that's one of the first places we'll check. >> deputies say they are bringing in more resources because of the limited visibility because of this latest storm. two snowmobilers were missing but they were found safe shortly after midnight. if you are heading to the sierra, you are warned. expect snow and slush on the roads. right now, caltrans is requiring chains or four-wheel drives with snow tires. those requirements are in place for both 80 as well as highway 50. snowplows, they are also working overtime and in some places, the drifts, they are as high as some buildings. now, you can keep track of all of the storms even when you are away from us on your tv.

just download ktvu's weather app. you can get it on your iphone, your ipad or your android device. 7:08. police in oakland are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl after luring her away from school. it happened on east 28th street near bella vista elementary. brian flores is at the school piecing together how this could happen and the clues police have to go on. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning. opd also looking to see whether this case is connected to two others as welt. i'm sure many parents are hoping this guy gets caught. behind me is bella vista, near where this latest incident happened. they say friday afternoon around 3:15, this girl was walking near bella vista elementary school when a man lured her away and inappropriately touched her not too far from her on 10th avenue and east 28th street. after it happened, the girl made it back here to bella vista and reported it to an

acall -- an adult. we have calls into oakland police for more information this morning. this is who police are looking for. it would be good to pay attention. the suspect is described as latino between 20, 25 years old, 5'6" to 5'10", average build, black hair. police say he was driving in a silver suv. now, also important to note is that he was wearing a blue and black jacket with black shorts. he may have a tattoo of a horse face on his left calf. all of that information coming from opd the chronicle says the opd is looking at whether this incident is related to two others in the past couple of months. in late january, another 6-year- old girl was touched by a stranger on the campus of think college now elementary off international boulevard. on march 7th, another girl reported being inappropriately touched at the campus of world academy off 28th. police looking for any witnesses or any information to

come forward to them, crimestoppers also issuing out a $7500 reward for any information leading to an arrest. we're live in oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. 7:10. san jose police are searching for suspects in a new crime wave. there have been six drive-by shootings in the past few days. the most recent was late yesterday. police say one person was wounded in the gunfire off tully road but is expected to survive. police are trying to determine if any of these shootings are connected. 7:11. despite all of the rain we're getting right now, still some residents in the south bay today, you are facing tough, new restrictions on water use. a very bumpy road this week for general motors. it has just issued a recall involving a million of its cars and today the company's ceo is facing congress over a separate recall for a flaw that's blamed for a dozen deaths. we're looking at highway

parents and students in pleasant hill are on alert this morning after a disturbing incident involving a 17-year- old girl. police say the teenager was groped while heading to class yesterday morning. it happened on a trail used by many students to get to nearby prospect alternative high school and pleasant hill middle school. police say a man jumped out of the bushes grabbed the girl, then ran off. many parents are driving their kids to school this morning. with this, i mean, i will definitely drop her off and

keep picking her up every day. >> when we heard it, i felt like -- like why does it always happen to people like that? >> so far, police have a vague description of the attacker. a white man, 30 years old with a thin build and light-colored hair. 7:14. there is a new report that says american students are getting better when it comes to problem solving but they are still trailing kids in other nations. an spwsht test given to 15-year- olds in 2012, it shows that american students performed slightly above average. however, they still trailed kids in many other nations, including singapore, hong kong, canada and australia. the administrators are still applauding american students. they say the results suggest that kids here are open to uncertainty and are not afraid to use intuition to find an answer to a problem. happening now, these are live pictures from washington, d.c. where we're hearing from people about the long delay

general motors recall. the families of people who died when the air bags did not deploy in their gm cars are among those speaking along with two senators and also henry waxman speaking right now. let's listen in. >> now i want to acknowledge the families and some of those victims for joining us today, for speaking up about their loved ones. i know it's difficult. it takes a great deal of courage to speak out about what's happened. i know they are reexperiencing the continuing pain that they have been feeling. you've not only lost family members but you've lost them in an accident that might have been prevented had gm taken action sooner. >> henry waxman is a member of congress based in los angeles. later this morning, gm's ceo will face tough questions from a congressional subcommittee on the timing of this recall. and all of this a happening one

day after -- all of this is happening after gm issued an unrelated recall of 1.3 million cars. this problem is related to the power steering on several model cars, the malibus, hhrs and pontiac g-6 models. drivers can still steer the cars. it just takes more effort and gm says that could increase the chances of an accident. the transportation department has a new recall to make it easier for drivers of all light vehicles to see what's behind you. it would require rear-view cameras for all new cars, suvs and light trucks and vans. it would be phased in starting with the 2016 models. supporters say it will prevent drivers from backing up over little children. the government says every year 210 people die, about 15,000 are hurt in those kinds of

accidents. there is a new development in the story of mozilla's chief executive officer. if you used the fire fox to go to the cupid dating site, you will be stopped. cupid is pitting up a message asking people not to use firefox. they say the ceo, brendan ike, is an opponent for equal rights for guy couples and are offering users an opportunity to download another browser before they continue. it is 7:18. a new attraction is getting people in las vegas a new view of the city. the high roller ferris wheel officially opened yesterday. built by ceaser's. it's the world's tallest. there are 28 enclosed gas gondolas. it's expected to be overtaken

by a ferris wheel planned by staten island. that's expected to be taller. >> you go first and then i will go. >> i don't think so. hey, sal, you are ready to go. and there are things happening on the roads now. >> that's right. it's a little wet out there, as you know. we have a nice picture of the toll plaza here with the sun coming up. it's backed up beyond the 880 overcrossing. it's still slow here. it will be a big delay backed up for a 30-minute delay on the bridge unless you are in the carpool lane and then you will get by much sooner than that. also looking at 880 northbound and southbound, the traffic here looks good in both directions. there are no major problems there. i want to take a look amount some of the things here. westbound highway 4 at 80 there is a crash there. but traffic on 80 itself is not all that bad as you drive towards richmond. let's go to steve. all right, sal.

thank you. we still have a winter weather advisory in the sierra until 11:00. there will be a few sunbreaks. but that's only to going to help the formation of the possibility of -- i don't want to say severe but we've had thunder and lightning. it's too cold in the upper atmosphere and also at the surface really for us to get strong severe but out in the valley maybe, possibility here. a lot of the ingredients are in place. we get the scattered showers, thundershowers in the morning. a lot of reports of hail. this right there. very intense coming in probably late morning, early afternoon for the north bay and then for everybody by late this afternoon or into tonight and then the cold area of low pressure looks like it's tracking right close over the bay area. rainfall totals, want to get a couple in. cazadero, 1.65. 42 degrees. sausalito, .75. ben lomond 1.30. today could be one of those

countries where across the street -- across the street there's an inch and you get .3. redwood city, palo alto, menlo park, if you are getting heavy rain there, that's the cell. there is another one coming in on highway 1 south of half moon bay towards san gregorio heading up towards sky line. probably 280 there's heavy rain. the cell is moving across fremont, union city, newark, clipping sunnyvale, mountain view as well. up to the north, there's a little cell right over st. helena it looks like that popped up. but tecate had a report of hail. that's where it was. just moved off. that's the day it's going to be that you get brief, heavy rain and the sun will pop up. st. helena looks like pretty good rain, up to lake county. we've had reports of snow up at cobb at 2700 feet. that's a very cold rain.

42 in antioch. 43 santa rosa. 48 at sfo. some thunder and lightning definitely in the mix today and then it will turn more heavy rain -- when this comes in, this will be brief, heavy rain and then the possibility of more thunderstorms as the low gets closer. some of the rainfall projections about the same as we had. would be about .3 to an inch. sometimes the shower activity congress scattered wide -- shower activity scattered widely. this will all come by by wednesday morning. then we'll be on the drier side. chilly today, a lot of reports of hail. it will be a rainbow today. 50s on the temperatures. colder up north. i doubt some areas get above 51, 52. showers take us into wednesday morning and then a cool, breezy day. a brook thursday morning --

break thursday morning. a weak system brushes us. but then it's out of here. the weekend looks sunny and warm and next week looks dry and well. a criminal with a conscience in a bizarre home- invasion robbery in the east bay. >> he brought my mother kleenex. he wanted to bring her a chair. >> what prompted an armed robber to show some sympathy for his victim. back, back, back. >> you see that? an unusual encounter with a deer in the east bay, what prompted all of this? look at it.

it is 7:25. we're following developing news from new york state. these are live pictures from the scene of a deadly accident between a charter bus and a pickup truck. this is in albertson, about 45 minutes east of new york city.

it's on long island near hicksville, it looks like. it looks like the bus veered off the road somehow and it's propped up a little bit. a lot of activity near the scene. a fire truck there on the left and a lot of emergency crews as well. police say the driver of the bus died. at this point, it's still unclear what caused this crash. we'll have more details as it comes in. 7:25. a 21-year-old military veteran says her time spent in the military may have cost her a job. army specialist kala reyes is in the national guard. she recently interviewed for a job at a sales associate at macy's but says the hiring manager kept asking her about her time at war. reyes claims that manager said she wouldn't know how to approach people because of her time spent overseas. >> she explained to me, i've been here 15 years. i know you wouldn't be able to

be good here. i said well, isn't your job loss prevention. she said that's what you to. that's what you are good at. >> since she posted her story online, she has received a lot of report. she believes this is a misconception of people who have served in the military. the homeowner in contra costa county says an aggressive deer came after his dog and he got it all on video. >> whoa! >> back, back, back! >> the video was shot in the martinez/pleasant hill area last week where deer sightings are common but this one seemed different. >> it was just walking back and forth. it wasn't spooked. it was kind of odd it didn't get spooked. >> he took out his camera and started to record and that's when the deer went after the dog three times. ktvu showed the video to a vet and he says he has seen agres

gretion from deers towards -- aggression from deers towards dogs once or twice a year. the homeowner said he's spotted two little ones in the same area. not pretty enough? san francisco's considering a new law today that would address what many consider to be an ugly problem. >> reporter: we're live in fremont where water rationing starts today. there's a lot of cleanup going on today. we'll show you an accident this morning that wasted hundreds of gallons of water. we're looking at a commute that's getting busker is by the moment. busier by the moment. sun, cloud, showers, hail, low snow levels. a lot going on. we'll take a closer look at a cell at palo alto coming up in two minutes.

day. we've had plenty of reports of thunder, lightning and hail. snow up in the sierra nevada. we're waiting for this system here. that's the band that will move onshore late afternoon, early evening. that will give us brief, heavy rain. out ahead of us, it's severe weather. ango win, mid -- angwin 1.75. middletown, 1.61. clayton, .99. sausalito, .75. it looks like a strong cell that went overwood side. now it's over palo alto. there's one over san gregorio and then back to portolo valley. maybe skyline, you could hit heavy rain for a while. you can see the whole cell

moving off towards fremont, union city. there's still some lining up offshore. it's kind of hit and miss. this is why we call them shower. tecate, had reports of rain. napa. southern napa so far. a very cold rain with some snow mixed in mendocino county and lake county. we get the scattered showers in the morning, then this system will drive in a little bit later. that's going to give widespread rain. some of that will be heavy at times. 40s on the temperatures. bundle up, it will be a very, very chilly day. these highs are way below average. not only this has to go through but the cold low will trek over the bay area. that will be late tonight into early tomorrow morning. off and on rain. some of it will be heavy. thunderstorms again, more hail reports. thunder and lightning. early this afternoon. 50s on the temperatures. >> steve, it is busier now than it was 20 minutes ago. we reached the peak of the commute. let's go right to the pictures.

traffic on 24 is going to be pretty slow in pleasant hill and la fayette and also in orinda. it's about a 12 to 15-minute drive time as you drive through. also as we look at the commute here at the toll plaza, we're looking at a 35-minute drive time into san francisco. the south bay, 85 finally beginning to get slow, especially as you approach highway 17 here and on 101 as you drive on 85 up to 101, it is a little bit slow. santa cruz mountains has been kind of a mess because of earlier problems and morgan hill is slow as you drive through the south bay. no major problems on 101 after that. we've been looking at 80 westbound, moderate through richmond. 7:34. back to the desk. an early-morning accident in fremont caused a lot of water to be wasted on this first day of water rationing there. a car smashed into a hydrant. that caused water to just gush into a parking lot. ktvu's janine de la vega, joining us live you are in

fremont show us the mess and tell us about the new rules out there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. a lot of the mess is cleaned up. there's cleanup crews right there. they are using this vacuum to clean up the water and the mud and the rocks that were here. the drains help suck up a lot of the water that flooded this parking lot on mowry. i'm told about 2,000 gallons of water gushed out of this hydrant that you see right here. it was knocked down. now, this is what it looked like earlier this morning. a lot of sludge, mud and rocks covered the parking lot. the alameda county water district says after 4:00 a.m., a driver hit the hydrant, causing water to shoot up 40 feet in the area. not a good day on this first day of rationing in fremont, newark and union city. people who live in the cities can only water their landscape one day a week or face fines. there is also a ban on

refilling swimming pools and using sprays without automatic shutoffs. violaters get their first warning through the mail, the second one a visit to the home and then after that, water could be shut off to the household. >> we don't have any water. you can see the water is low at the query and lakes -- quarry and lakes. that's huge. hopefully with the rain coming in, we can get a good snowpack and we'll be able to get some water down to niles canyon. >> reporter: the alameda county water district gets almost half of its water supply from local rainfall. at the end of january. state water officials said we need the equivalent of a big storm every week through may. that's 16 major storms. we've had five. the biggest since february and march did end well but state reservoirs are still at low levels. water experts told ktvu that to get to normal precipitation we

need the wettest april, may and june that we've had in 130 years. back out here live, you can see the crews here from the water district are just finishing up all of the cleanup that they had to do out here. but again, as you can see, everything is drying out now. so still much-needed rain that we need out here. reporting live in fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:37. today, the mountain view city council could declare a state one water emergency. that could prompt educating the public about this nonessential water use. they get 87% of water from sfpuc. at ktvu.com, you will find real- time information on the water

level on all of california's reservoirs. look for the drought section on the news menu. happening today, former san francisco school district board keith jackson, who was arrested with leland yee, is due to appear in court this morning. he's accused of distributing campaign contributions to leland yee. jackson is also accused of drug trafficking, taking part in a gun trafficking plot and being involved in a murder for hire scheme. senator yee had his second court appearance yesterday. he did not enter a plea. yee is expected to plead not guilty to seven felony counts, including gun trafficking when he goes back to court a week from today. yesterday, yee did not talk to reporters as he left the courthouse in san francisco. but his lawyer questioned why the government's three-year investigation took so long.

>> it also raises the questions about whether they themselves, the government thought they had a case. >> leland yee remains free on $500,000 bail. leland yee may have a sizable legal defense fund thanks to the tens of thousands of dollars in campaign donations he's opinion given for his abandoned run of secretary of state. right now, yee has only $134,000 in his campaign account. however, the san francisco chronicle is reporting he recently deposited an extra $518,000 with a tv buyer for campaign ads. if he gets the deposit back he will have $650,000 for his beale bills -- legal bills. there's nothing legally that prevents him from using that money for his legal defense. san francisco supervisors take action on what many people consider to be an ugly problem.

they will consider new legislation targeting dozens at&t boxes installed on city sidewalks in reap sent years -- recent years. there are growing complaints, the metal boxes are big eyesores. under the proposal, at&t will have to try to harder to place the boxes away from sidewalks. state law allows san francisco so set out rules for where they are installed. the deadline for getting health insurance under the affordable care act has passed but those who tried to enroll online and could not finish get another 15 days to wrap up the process. it's based on the honor system, the government will not require proof that people tried earlier. the next chance to enroll will be in november. and new this morning, the white house has just announced that

president obama will make a statement this afternoon on the total enrollment numbers across the country for the affordable care act. reportedly, the goal of 7 million signups was surpassed. the 7 million target was thought to be out of reach by most experts. the president is scheduled to speak at 1:15 this afternoon our time. it is 7:41. he told his father, i'll meet you at the bottom but he never showed up. the desperate search for a missing bay area snowboarder. and bringing smiles to an area hit by tragedy. who made a surprise visit to those affected by the deadly mudslide in washington state. good morning. we're looking at a commute that's busy and a little bit rainy out there. it looks like it just rained on the san mateo bridge. we'll tell you what the wet weather is doing to the drive times around the bay area.

we have new video of a fire in the sacramento area where four dogs had to be rescued from a burning home just a short time ago. at first, firefighters were worried the homeowners may be trapped inside. you can see all of the smoke coming out of the roof. but after a search, all of the people who live there have been accounted for. power lines are also down in the area. firefighters say the fire did

start in the attic but there's still no word on what exactly what sparked it. happening today -- cracking down on distracted driving. pam cook is in the newsroom with the alarming statistics that is offered to improve in order to save lives. >> 6,000 people are killed in the u.s. every year. that's according to the chp because of distracted driving. starting today, a month-long crackdown on distracted driving begins in the bay area. that's part of national distracted driving awareness month. officers are looking for people who are texting or holding their phone, eating, putting on makeup and everything else that takes your eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. now, according to the california office of traffic safety, 80% of accidents involve some sort of distracted driving. another campaign that begins today is from mothers against drunk driving. the group kicks off 21 days of activities to prevent underaged drinking. a survey shows teenagers who

received a message about the dangers of underaged drinking are 80% less likely to drink. there are are a number of things that can be considered distracted driving. you can get a ticket for texting while sitting at a red light. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. we have new information about a homicide near pinole. it happened at a home near cornelius. sheriff deputies found the victim's body in the garage. they are questioning two possible suspects. we still have no information about the victim or what may have led up to the homicide. police in pleasant hill looking for a very unusual criminal who appears to have a conscience. this after a home-invasion robbery. take a look at the sketch after the strange crime on santa

lucia drive. police say the gunmen came into the house and attempted to tie up the mother and her daughter. and then the older gunman started to apologize. >> very apologetic. he brought her a clean -- kleenex, a chair, made her comfortable. >> they even brought them a tv set while they they would have something to do while he stole their valueables. the armed robber then drove off in their car. sal, how is the traffic in contra costa county? >> well, it's a little bit slow. if you are looking at highway 4, for example, you will see slow traffic coming through contra costa county from the construction zone. and then it slows in pockets from pittsburgh to concord including what you see here in baypoint. but it's going to be affected by the wet weather as well. so not only is it slow but the

underway. tuesday morning, the very first day of april. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. a quick look at weather and traffic. a little break steve, but a lot more coming. >> absolutely. been a lot of weather already. sun, downpour, lightning, hail. lots of reports of hail. the main bulk of the system is up here. that's what's swinging in. and then overnight we could get another -- i think some very low snow levels as well. had a good cell come on the san mateo coast. went across the peninsula, parts of the peninsula. now it's heading to fremont, union city, south of newark. it looks like it's falling apart. but there is a better cell which came on sell at san gregorio heading right over towards portola valley, skyline, 280, south of woodside, towards los altos, pretty good intense rain could fall out of that. you can see the cell and a series of hit-and-miss showers. nothing too intense. there's been a couple of them

few minutes. westbound bay bridge is lighter than usual. i tell ya, i think we figured out what's going on. it's spring break for a lot of schools. and a lot of schools have the week off and parents are not driving their kids to school, college students are not driving themselves to campus. and this is one of the things that we've seen better than usual traffic on the bay and on the san mateo bridge. also on the dumbarton bridge. it's not light enough that it's hoyle light. you still see slow -- holiday light. you still see slow traffic. 580 is slow through livermore and 880 is still slow from about tennyson road. it is a little bit better f it weren't raining and the roads were not wet, we would see better commutes. that may coming up in the next few days. this is the dumbarton approaches and traffic is doing well. 8:03. back to the desk. thank you, sal.

stormwatch coverage as more showers head to the area. people are still cleaning you up. tara moriarty has more information about how lightning struck an 80-feet tree. it's not 80 feet anymore. >> reporter: no. we just learned that a crane will be coming in and removing a very heavy piece of wood, about a 3,000-pound chunk of wood underneath that tarp. that crane will come in here and remove that. the man who lives inside the house, the house has been red tagged. he was perfectly fine. if we take a walk back here, this is the -- this is the house next door. you can see the damage here. and then one house down from that. wow, look at that. all of the huge wood chunks lying in the middle of the yard around the wood flew, damaging homes three blocks away. if we take a look at what the tree looked like before the

lightning struck. you can see it used to be this 80-foot tall tree with huge limbs. but no more. the bolt struck the tree around 1:00 yesterday afternoon near holly and buena avenue. the impact destroyed a parked car. it ripped roofs apart and blew out windows throughout the area. one neighbor told us she was three blocks away when it happened and she was motionless. >> i was just sitting at my desk and i didn't even see the lightning. i just felt this huge explosion and it -- i said -- i heard it was thunder. i thought it was thunder and i thought my good, that's close. >> reporter: luckily, the lightning didn't spark a fire but it did temporarily knock out power in the neighborhood. again, that house has been red tagged. we are told that the tree, if we take a look at the top of it back here live. that's gonna be chopped off sometime this morning. it will be interesting to see exactly how cold the tree is. another kind of funny tidbit. neighbors have been coming by

all morning grabbing pieces of wood like this as souvenirs. one lady said she saw the robert redford movie and wants to make a bat out of it. back to you. >> thank you. in marin, they are cleaning up of a two redwood trees took a beating there from this latest storm. in sausalito, a tree hit by lightning, it exploded, sending chunks of wood flying. it severely damaged the house and shattered its windows. fortunately the lady who lives there, she was not home at the time. >> i have been sitting right there. definitely would have been hurt if i had been sitting there. >> in mill valley, another redwood fell on the house, cautioned a lot of damage. but no injuries. neighbors say the backed of had up storm drains flooded the area and that weakened the trees. the rain in the east bay caused major problems for the commute. slick, wet roads caused a lot of accidents. on highway 24, one car spun outed, then it was hit by

another car. the oakland chp had 37 accident calls by 6:30 in the evening. they are warning drivers to be careful as the rain continues this week. right now search-and-rescue crews in the sierra are looking for a 25-year-old snowboarder who has been missing since yesterday afternoon. he was last seen with his father in the castle peak area that is across interstate 80 near boreal mountain resort. sheriff's deputy say the snowboarder was with his dad when the two got separate and the son never came off the mountain. the dad said the son knows the area well and was carrying the necessary equipment. deputies says they are bringing in more resources because of the limited visibility due this this latest storm. two snow molars were missing in the same area yesterday but they were found safe shortly after midnight. anyone heading to the sierra today, well, they are being warned to expect snow and slush on the roads. right now, caltrans is

an alert in pleasant hill after a disturbing incident involving a 17-year-old girl. police say the girl was groped while heading to school. it happened on a tram getting to prospect alternative high school and pleasant hill middle school. police say a man jumped out of the bushes grabbed the girl then ran off. the school district has advice for kids heading to school this morning. >> when a stranger approaches, you get away as quickly as you can. if a stranger approaches, you to make sure you tell an adult immediately. >> so far police only have a vague description of the attacker they are looking for a white man, 30 years old, with a thin build and light hair. the brother-in-law of jimmie johnson has died in a

water to be wasted ironically on the first day of water rationing day. a car crashed into a hydrant. the water gushed out into a parking lot. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live in fremont to tell us about cleaning up that mess and also the new water saving rules out there. janine. >> reporter: dave, they brought in heavy equipment in the last half-hour that you can see to pull the fire hydrants that you see there on the ground that was hit in this accident. crews are working to replace that hydrant. but as you can see, it's raining right now. and it's a good thing right now that they were habl to clean up all -- able to clean up all of the mud and sludge and rocks left out here because it could have been a -- this would have been a lot messier. this looked like a lot of mud and rocks covered the parking lot. the alameda county water district says after 4:00 a.m. this morning, a driver hit the hydrant, causing the water to shoot up in the air. crews used vacuums to clean it

near the sharp park golf course. city workers say it was the worse flooding in pacifica in years. at ktvu.com, you will find realtime information on the water level of all of california's reservoirs. look for the california drought section on the news menu. former san francisco school board president keith jackson arrested along with state senator leland yee is scheduled to appear in court this morning. jackson is accused of soliciting campaign contributions for senator yee in exchange for political favors. the fbi affidavit also accuses jackson of drug trafficking, taking part in a gun trafficking plot and being involved in a murder for hire scheme. in the mean time, leland yee had his second court appearance yesterday and did not enter a plea. yee is expected to plead not guilty to gun trafficking, when he goes to court and other charges. he did not talk to reporters as

he left the courthouse in san francisco. we did speak with legal analyst jim hammer about the case. he says from what he has head in the 137-page affidavit it's gonna be a tough case for the defense. >> i can tell you on a jury appeal level, i don't think any juror will like the fact that a state senator is accused of arms dealing in california. i think that's incredibly serious for the defense. >> yee remains free on $500,000 bond. the deadline to sign up for health insurance under the affordable care act, it has passed, but some people can still enroll. california's covered california website had a lot of traffic, as many rushed to enroll at the last minute. if you tried to enroll before midnight but you couldn't get on the website, you now have two more weeks to finish up. the people who did not enroll will pay a penalty when they file their taxes next year and you won't have another chance to sign up until november.

chunk of wood. we found out the man who lives there was on the opposite side of the house when the lightning hit. that's the good news. if we take a look, you can see it used to be anle -- an 80- foot tall gigantic tree. the bolt struck the tree near holly street. this destroyed a parked car. it ripped roofs apart three blocks away. it blew out windows. luckily, it did not start a fire but it did knock out power to the neighborhood. the house has been red tagged. the one where the tree fell on top of it. the tree is going to be chopped off at the top. the homeowner -- it was an arborist that came out and said the tree did need some trimming after limbs came out. we've also seen a lot of neighbors come out hire to take photographs and also to pick up the chunks of wood. they want to take them as a
