are expected to continue. it's a wet one over san francisco. you can see stretching through daly staid city and if i head to the hills we still have low snowfalling over the sierra where snow levels have been reported down to about 3,000 feet. and the sierra have picked up snows to 3,000 feet. we're going to back up and show you the systems responsible for this. it continues to track back to the bay area. this is where the coldest unstable air lies and that explains why we've been so active this afternoon. it's going to move through by late tonight. this is going to finally wind down and will be out of here by tomorrow. i'll be tracking it for you between now and then. we'll show you how much rain is falling between now and then and we'll have what you can expect for your wednesday. never good when it's raining on your evening commute. this is 880 in oakland. the lanes on the right are headed toward downtown oakland and the lanes on the left headed to the oakland coliseum and it is packed.

the commute direction coming into the east bay, those are the lanes on the left. you can see it's really slow going. heading over to the peninsula doesn't look that bad at least at this hour. >> we've been getting reports of heavy rain, lightning and thunder from many people in marin county coming into our newsroom today. so of course we sent out our own noelle walker to san rafael. you're still getting soaked. >> we had these cells where it was dumping on us, and now we're in a steady rain for the last couple of minutes. we've seen sun, clouds, rain. we've heard reports of thunder and lightning like you mentioned. we even saw a little bit of hail. what you saw depending on what you say and where you were. it was almost like someone had a faucet up there and they were turning it on and off throughout the day.

we even had a brief hailstorm that we did experience. that came with a noticeable temperature drop. but that pea sized hail it just melted as soon as it hit the pavement. we talked to a couple of people with differing opinions about our spring showers. >> yeah, the rain is great. i'm waiting for more thunder. >> we don't get it too much. >> mother earth needs a shower too you know. >> i'm tired of it already. >> we haven't had that much. >> i know but when you had to drive to santa rosa it's not a good idea. it stayed dry all day and i get on the freeway and it's going to pour. >> right now you're looking at the san rafael bridge as people go to san rafael county. it is a soggy commute. so if you're about to jump in the car to head home or go out for the evening be careful out there on the roads. lots of spray and give yourself extra lee time. if you have your windshield wipers on you're supposed to

have your head lights on as well. there's a brief break in the clouds, and it has a green ting to it. we'll explain that to you at 6:00. noelle walker. the weather also brought hail in the sierra. some people said some of the hail was bigger, close to the size of a golf ball. here's another picture showing how the hail accumulated on the ground. it covered lawns, rooftops and cars but thankfully no damage was reported. people rushing to clean up from last night's storm had to do more of it today as more rain came down. in berkeley a large sicoy was struck sending a big chunk of it over a home. tonight a crane was brought in to remove that mess. john fowler live in san

francisco with the wet clean up today, john. >> reporter: that's right, this was an exciting day actually. we had lots of rain, lots of lightning and thunder. i want to show you the snarl this has caused for the commute. this is -- this is the embarcadero. that's howward street, one way to get to the bay bridge and you can see, the streets here are clogged. everyone though the rain has eased off just a bit now. all around the bay where we were. the storm hit occasionally with very surprising strength. heavy rain and briefly pea sized hail. cell this afternoon along ocean beach. big waves pounded the sand here. and in pacifica where for a

time radar showed tornadic spinning offshore. no funnel cloud formed. and crews were removing what was left of an exploded redwood tree in berkeley. lightning blew apart the 80- foot tree severely damaging this home. we canvassed the street and residents reported few problems today. if you're expecting any commuters from downtown san francisco, you can expect some delays for all of them. we talked to several people today who said that although there was some inconvenience, this rain was needed for the drought. >> and we will continue to track this storm as it develops and changes throughout the

hour. we will bring you any reports of damage or traffic back ups as we get them. and now to the latest on the arrest of senator yee. >> reporter: the fbi has made it clear this is an ongoing investigation and today it became apparent they're still looking at possible evidence. nearly a week after it rained at leland yee's capital office, fbi agents raided another office associated with the suspended state senator who's charged with wire fraud and arms trafficking. >> we told the fbi, we let them know that we found this office and we thought that we wanted to make sure they had all the information that they needed. >> reporter: a yee assistant shares the office with other

senate staff that are not part of the investigation. the fbi was focused on paper work and a computer used by yee's assistant. >> we spent a couple of hours looking through the office, looking through the computer. >> reporter: today appeared in federal court in san francisco on a $250,000 bond hearing. he is considered a central character in the case. his charges range from drugs and arms trafficking to a murder for hire. >> there is no murder, there is no crime, it's all in the mind of an fbi agents. >> they went to keith and kept up that pretense to get him in. >> reporter: they repeated the theme raised yesterday by yee's attorney. that the fbi investigation

which netted two dozen suspects was a waste of taxpayers money. >> it succeeded to some attempt in creating i want to call it a sort of hysteria about what is this all about. >> reporter: leland yee's attorney declined comment about this latest raid. he is due back in court next tuesday presumably to answer a not guilty plea. live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. a runner who went missing along a trail in placer county is thanking his rescuers. they found robert rogue this afternoon in the michigan bluff trail area. that's near the small community of forest hill. he was brought back into a base camp talking and smiling and was then loaded into an ambulance. the search began sunday after he got separated from a running group. he spent two nights in the wilderness. a snowstorm also hit the area yesterday. officials say he complained about cold hands but other than that he appeared to be in good

the search for a missing snow boarder is growing more urgent as time passes. 25-year-old abraham figelstein is from the bay area. he was last seen yesterday afternoon in the castle peak area across interstate 80 near boreal mountain resort. the sheriff deputy says the missing man was hiking with his dad. he told his father he was going to snow board to the bottom but never made it off the mountain.

his dad said his son is physically fit and was carrying the necessary equipment to hopefully survive the cold. another search this one for a missing 93-year-old man has now come to an end. his car was found today down an embankment down the north bay. he was last seen february 26th after being seen with his daughter. he drove off headed for his home in san rafael. today after more than a month his car was found off highway 1 just north of molinas which is nowhere near where he lived. ktvu's tom vacar near the scene now. tom who found the car? >> reporter: it was an inspector doing the most simple of inspections. what he did was simply look down. and this is the situation that developed. at mid-morning a caltrans road condition inspector walking on the shoulder of highway 1 discovered a car down a steep hill 100 to 200 feet down the southbound lane.

initial reports indicate the air bags had been deployed and the car was open with no one inside. the inspector called the chp with the car's information and was soon matched up with the san rafael missing person's report of 93-year-old robert davis who had been missing since the ends of february. responders then found a body which was brought up the road and transferred to the coroner's van. >> they were successful in finding remains. they will work on identify which we do not have at this time. >> reporter: now that probably means the victim was able to get out of the car. at least was out of the car at the time and may have indeed died of exposure. that will certainly be discovered during the autopsy. everyone as we speak right now. a huge wrecker is trying to pull the car up, up the side of the road. that will probably take place in the next few hours. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news.

tonight a second student in pleasant hill says she was groped on her way to school. and police say today's case is nearly identical to the one we told you about yesterday. john sasaki reports and show us a photo the student took before the suspect took off. >> reporter: a quiet spot, but what happened here at 7:30 this morning has shaken the community. >> it's very concerning. i certainly hope the district is taking it seriously. it would be nice to see police presence in the morning and in the evening when students get out. >> reporter: a girl walking to school was groped by someone. the girl was walking along harriett drive. she turned around and he was running away. but she was quick enough to take out her cell phone and take a picture of him. you can see the man is wearing a bright blue jacket. >> i can't tell you whether it's one person or not. he said two because this is the

second such incident this week as we reported last night. the same thing happened yesterday morning in this east bay mud trail near pleasant hill middle school. >> it's scary. very scary. that's the reason why i pick up my daughter. i don't let anyone else pick up my daughter. >> reporter: the message said in part please use this as an opportunity to speak to your child about being safe to and from school. it went on to say kids should walk in groups and report any incident to the school. >> you're grateful the child got away safely. you're grateful that's all that it was. >> john sasaki reporting there. the descriptions were slightly different in the two incidents. one was a white male. the other was described as hispanic. police want to hear from anyone with information about the incident or the attackers. a plan to create a registry

of private surveillance cameras is moving forward. council member sam lacardo proposeed the idea after home surveillance videos helped lead to the arrest of a suspected serial arsonist. the data base would be voluntary and backers say it will save police valuable time because they will already know who has a surveillance camera and in the event of a crime they won't have to go door to door asking people. the city council's rules committee will take up the idea tomorrow afternoon. >> we've been showing you rain, hail and right now our meteorologist rosemary orozco is tracking lightning strikes happening over the area. >> that will be the case as we move through the evening hours slowly tapering off. by tomorrow the system will finally by out of way. you can see it is very widespread out there at this hour: and it's going to continue as we move through the evening hours. i want to shift in a little closer. along highway 4 as well.

so between areas like pittsburg and bay point. we have good rainfalling at this hour. rainfall rates about .4 of an inch per hour. so very dicey along this roadway. and highway i should say at this hour. but it is very widespread. moderate to even heavy rain reported over the parts of the east bay. along 580, 680, 24, 880 you call it. we have rain everywhere at this hour. shifting into the south bay we have some light rain over san jose. a moderate rain campbell, sunny vale shifting off along the peninsula. along the coast as well as the peninsula just very widespread. highway101 as well as 280. a very messy commute to san francisco. our bridges are wet, into the north bay looks like just a few pockets here of dry weather. but most of us wet over the north bay as well. i'm going to turn off the radar and show you the center of circulation. there it is. right there. and you can see, the counter clock wise motion continuing to send those bands our way. that's why it's been on and off

again and very active at times. so this system is going to continue to work its way toward the bay area. it will be shifting to the south overnight. and by tomorrow it's out of here. rainfall totals from yesterday, more than an inch in many places. and we could see 2-inches before it's all said and done. so that is actually some good news. let's time this out. here we are with the steady rain. by 7:00 it begins to wind down just a little bit. as we get into the evening hours we will remain with the possibility of scattered showers and embedded thunderstorms by tomorrow morning. it's finally shifting out of here. maybe a few scattered showers especially in the southern edge of the bay area. tomorrow morning when we get out the door it's going to be chilly. upper 30s in areas like santa rosa, napa, 40s around the bay. 42 especially in morgan hill. your extended forecast here. so we'll leave in just a possibility, maybe a few showers tomorrow morning. that will be it. we're going to dry out. it'll be a cool day but we'll be dry wednesday as well as thursday. we get another chance of rain

in washington, d.c. today the relatives of people killed in car accidents accuse general motors of valuing profits over human lives. the company ceo met with those family members before testifying before congress today. 14 deaths right now are linked to ignition switch defects going back more than a decade. gm now says the switch failure cut power to air bags so they

tonight we're tracking a storm that is not letting up. strong bands are swinging into the parts of the bay area bringing in heavy rain and in some cases thunder. and in san francisco today, people tried to stay dry as the rain was pouring down. we want to bring in rosemary now. rosemary you were saying earlier we haven't gotten to the center of the storm, that's still offshore. >> that's right. that's where the most unstable air. the coldest air lies and that's why we're seeing such active air. it will finally taper off. and i do see an end in sight. it's not going to come this afternoon. giving you a look at the widespread rain and as gasia

mentioned embedded thunderstorms. we do have moderate rain and lightning popping up along highway 4 right over the bay area. you have good rainfalling over you. if i shift a little bit in areas around cordelia. 680 that stretch between benetia and cordelia. we have wet roads over the central bay and into the south bay. our bridges are wet picking up moderate rain over areas along the south bay. we shift in along the palo alto area. you can see moderate rainfalling there. so sliding back showing you the rain continues over the bay area. this is going to move through. once the steady band moves through we will be left with scattered showers and the possibility of thunderstorms for your evening hours before we finally begin to dry out. i'll show you the futurecast model, show you when i expect to see that drier weather.

the final snow pack survey of the season shows our rain only amounted to a drop in the bucket. the totals are one of the lowest recorded since officials began collecting the data more than 70 years ago. >> we had a depth of snow of 23.7. water con -- content of 8.1. surveyors from the department of water resours says the snow pack is far below normal as the spring melt approaches. today's measurement was critical, the measurement confirmed the grim drought diagnosis for the coming months. >> we're obviously not looking all that promising for our spring and summer certainly in terms of recovering on the reservoir storage. which is around 3/4 average. >> the snow pack has been called california's frozen

reservoir. the run off feeds help quench the water needs of farms and cities. it also helps to determine how much water we'll have for the rest of the spring and the summer. we have breaking news now. a powerful earthquake has just hit the pacific ocean off of the northern region of chile. authorities have ordered an evacuation of coastal areas in case of a tsunami. right now there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage. the u.s. geological survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 8.0. it was so strong it can also be felt in the neighboring countries of bolivia and peru. we're working to get more information as we get it we will bring it to you. the man who bought the one winning lottery ticket worth $425 million has finally come forward. he did so today. he bought the ticket at a gas station in milpitas this past february. allie rasmus spoke with the man's spokesperson about what he's going to do with all that men and why it took him so long to can come forward. >> reporter: we know the

winners name is raymond buckston. we know he lives some where in northern california, we don't know his exact age but he considers himself to be a senior citizen. this photo says it all. the power ball winner wants to keep a low profile. he's using the check to cover up his face and has a t-shirt that says left of the jedi. he realized he had the winning ticket he immediately resigned from his job. he plans to travel, spend time with his family and use the bulk of his winnings to start a charitable foundation focused on child hunger and education. buckston waited a month and half to claim his prize because he wanted to be prepared. this man really did his home work. one of the first things he did was go online to the california lottery website to get a winners handbook online. it comes in five different

the death toll has risen once again following that deadly mud slide in washington state. authorities now say the count has gone from 24 to 27 with 19 of those victims positively identified. almost two dozen others are still missing. workers say dry weather has helped them in their muddy search for human remains but they say every step they take is dangerous because the soil is contaminated. they are also carefully collecting any personal item s that they can find. like an american flag that may have once flown on a front

city. i think that appeals to a lot of candidates. >> reporter: we reached out to the vallejo police officers association but didn't hear back from them. the spot costs $60,000 to make and would be paid for with money from a state grant. allie rasmus, ktvu news. president obama is calling the obama care roll out a success. according to new white house figures more than 7 million people have signed up for coverage. president obama spoke from the rose garden to announce that numbers beat the original projections. the numbers though don't include thousands that have signed up on state exchanges in the final day before the deadline. the white house says the age break down includes enough young healthy people to keep premiums under control. >> i will always work with anyone who's willing to make this law work even better. but the debate over repealing this law is over. the affordable care act is here

as i speak. looking at just the western edge of the valley begining to see that rain. you can see here an overview of what's happening. wet everywhere. the northern edge of sonoma counties. looks like we have a break on the backside here. so we are beginning to see at least a break from this steady rain that will continue to push to the east. move through the central valley and then up the hill to the sierra where it will bring us more snow. giving you a look here, areas like antioch, oakley, brentwood, lightning firing over this area. and the rainfall rates pretty moderate to heavy at times. looks like .3 of an inch an hour has moved through the area. highway4 a messy commute to this afternoon. it doesn't matter what highway you're on. it is likely to be wet. we can take a look over the north bay where the rain is generally light but still coming down. our bridges are wet, from the richmond san rafael, the golden gate, the dumbarton. it's just very widespread. the rain continuing to fall at this hour.

i'm seeing a little bit of rain. right along that area. along that stretch of 580, 880 seeing moderate rain at this time. backing up just a bit. this will move through and we will be left with scattered showers for the evening hours. right now the snow continuing to fall over the sierra. this morning we woke up with snow levels down to about 3,000 feet but it looks lightning right now snow levels hovering around 1,000 feet. so if i show you what's going on offshore, this is the storm we've been tracking. it's been out here for quite some time. but it is slowly working its way closer to the bay area. notice the counter clock wise circulation. you can see how it continues to send the bands our way. everyone behind the steady rain we still have the possibility of showers in our evening forecast as well as the possibility of thunderstorms. by 7:00, 8:00 we're tapering off to scattered showers.

football field blindfolded. >> first time offenders can face fines of up to 200 to $250 just for one cell phone ticket. that's even, that's only if you're stopped without causing injury or death to someone else. more than 300,000 people were killed in distracted driving related crashes in 2012. oakland police are looking for a man who lured a 6-year- old away from her elementary school and then sexually assaulted her. it happened on friday around 3:15 in the afternoon on east 28th street near bella vista elementary. fortunately the girl was able to get back to the school and tell an adult about the incident. parents say they are surprised to hear about the assault. they also say that the school typically has a good security system. >> they don't really let people in that they don't know. it's a new lock down procedure. i don't know how he was able to either come in on the school or around here. >> the man described as latino between 20 and 25 years old.

but first new at 6:00, police and school officials are still trying to figure out who's behind a twitter page filled with gossip from students from several bay area districts. it was inappropriate and graphic and some say the gossip boarded on bullying. and claudine wong tells us what she found out when she started asking questions. >> reporter: we pulled it up and started making some calls. just within the last couple of hours that twitter page was actually taken down after police and school officials got involved. most of what's on this twitter page is inappropriate. with references to sex and rape. the page named ghetto gossip g. those followers appear to be students from high schools in benecia, vallejo and american
