habit. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> can you imagine -- >> waking up to that? what a sight. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, will it rain more? >> a little bit this morning. this afternoon looks quieter. still come coming from the east, highway 4, antioch. not a lot. pittsburg, concord, martinez, highway 4, maybe a little bit. there's not a lot to this but there's enough to give some light rain. your forecast, showers. but they are winding down. some drier air moving into the north bay. it's cold out there, though, for this time of year. breezy, sun and clouds. rain will be moving south, well south. a couple of cells left in southern marin county, into san francisco. this is light stuff around brisbane. there's been light rain. sfo has had rain. south san francisco, san bruno. but there's not a lot left. a little over towards hayward. a couple of cells. after that, san carlos might get a little bit. it's turning spotty and is starting to weaken. if you are down to santa cruz,

that's where the heavier rain is. but the cold air is in place. 42 livermore. walnut creek, 44. it's cold. even though the rain is ending it went be very warm today. you can sees dry air moving in. we're about ready to say goodbye to the showers. it looks like things are less than an hour and a half ago. sunny, cool, breezy, highs. upper 50s, very 60s -- very low 60s. here's sal. today is another day to leave extra time. you've probably become good at this since it's been raining all week. the bay bridge is a little better than it normally is, especially if you are driving in some of these cash lanes or in the outside lanes from 880. i think the spring break affect is taking place. some schools are out. it's about a 15, to 20-minute drive time. san mateo bridge looks nice. westbound 92 on the right of your he screen on -- done your

screen -- on your screen. highway 4 has not been great. we've had a couple of fender berders along the way between pittsburg and concord. the traffic is going to be slow. same thing for vacaville to fairfield. drivers, you will have to deal with a bunch of slow traffic before you get past it. if you are getting on the road in vallejo, it's okay for you. 7:03. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. on storm watch, you may still need your umbrella when you head out this morning. but we will start to dry out from our recent wet weather later today. here is a look at some of the best storm pictures caught by our news cameras late last night. a strong storm cell dumped rain in chinatown. many cities across the bay area received .5 to 1 inch in just the past day. the storms have really soaked the seoul and that's causing trees to topple over.

crews are scrambling to remove the tree that's fallennen on the roads and -- fallen on the roads and the trees. tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: good morning. we spoke to a lady who said she was parked right where the tree fell yesterday. she considers this a close call. not the case for this gentleman looking at his jeep that was destroyed by the tree. this is just really quite a spectacle here. now that the sun has come up, you can see how massive this is and how it came crashing down on not just two cars actually, but three cars. now, we're on the 500 block of el dorado avenue near kaiser permanente medical center. if we can take a look at the video where the tree came crashing down around 10:30. luckily, no one was hurt. but power went out to several homes. it was later restored. one neighbor walking his dog

was forced to change his route, he said, because of the fallen trees. >> yeah, it's pretty crazy to see that big tree come down like that. smash two cars. [laughter] >> a little surprise in the morning. >> reporter: in san francisco, a tree also fell in the castro district. fire crews say the call came through at 9:30 last night at 0th and u re-- 20th and eureka. yesterday, we saw hail, lightning, between 1, 1.50 inches of rain. the rain has stopped. hopefully we're in the clear. if we come back here live, you can take a look at how not only are the cars wrecked, but if we pan up to the top of the pole, there used to be a street lamp there. that was -- that was knocked over. it's laying in the street. coming up, steve will let you know when the rain is back, when we're back for more. live from oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news.

>> thank you. for realtime updates any time we're offair, you can download our mobile app on your devices. in chile, there was an 8.2 earthquake. it hit off the northern coast of chile. this is surveillance camera from a store. you can see things falling off shelves. just a couple of things but then the shaking goes on and more and more things start flying off the shelves. at least six people have died. some from heart attacks. others because of severe injuries. the 8.2 magnitude quake was centered off the northern coastal city of iquiqui, all of the tsunami watches and warnings are canceled. the quake caused tsunami waves that were more than 6 feet tall. >> this quake is stronger than the strongest earthquake recorded in san francisco. the one that hit san francisco in 1906 is estimated to have had a magnitude between 7.7 and

7.9. the quake was followed by the great fire. combined, the two disasters killed about 3,000 people and destroyed 80% of the city. we'll be marking the 108th anniversary of that quake just 16 days from now. and the 1989 loma prieta quake had a 6.9 magnitude. while much of the damage was here in the bay area, the empy center was just outside of aptos in santa cruz county. 63 people died across northern california. it also left thousands of people homeless after homes were destroyed pie the shaking and the -- by the shaking and the fires that followed. well, the so-called apple space ship is ready to take off. but this is causing big traffic concerns in one south bay city. janine de la vega joining us live from cupertino. what's going on, janine? >> reporter: dave, construction is about to begin here at the new apple campus site that you see behind me. there are plenty of signs and

barricades up preventing people from traveling in lanes near north wolf and homestead. drivers say, though, in the afternoon, the backup gets bad. it may get worse with more changes coming. this map shows of a new apple campus and what it borders. it's surrounded by north wolfe road, tantou and homestead road. there are signs and cones on the streets telling motorists where to detour. crews have been working on the demolition of the old buildings on the site which used to house hewlett-packard. that's nearly done. but more work needs to be completed to relocate the public utilities and to get the site ready for the new apple campus 2. coon avenue will be affected. a section of it will be closed. there are also lane reductions happening on homestead and tantou. while some are frustrated with the changes, others say they

don't mind because of what apple will bring. >> just the vitality and energy that it will bring, including this shopping center, will be an upside for the whole neighborhood. >> coming down homestead is cumbersome, all the way -- the two lanes merge into one. there's a lot of people, the two lanes right here being closed on wolf are -- it's really annoying. >> the new apple headquarters will employ around 12,000 people which city leaders said would benefit the local economy because of the additional tax revenue it should bring. until the project is completed, the businesses and people who live around it will be affected. apple has sent out a letter to the neighbors to explain the changes coming. one neighbor said she also gets updates about meetings she can attend to voice concerns. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:10. apple and samsung, they are back in court today for the latest count in their ongoing

patent battle. the trial is at the federal courthouse in san jose. apple's lawyers say they have proof that samsung cop pipped its patents and apple wants $2 billion in damage. samsung, meantime, is accusing apple of stealing its patents. the court battle is putting google in the crossfire. yesterday in court, samsung presented evidence that a year before he died, steve jobs saw google as a growing threat. in an e-mail sent by jobs in october of 2010, he called for a meeting saying the primary reason for it is to declare "holy war google." this information was included in steve jobs's by grow graph -- biographty. a shooting last night at 11:00 at broadway. one man died at the scene. while the other victim is in critical condition. no one is in custody yesterday. investigators are looking for

witnesses or nearby surveillance video that might have caught the gunman. dublin police are asking for the public's help finding a man to robbed a gas station and threatened to burn it down. these pictures have been released from the robbery last wednesday at a shell station on doherty road. officers say the man was armed with a baseball bat and a can of gasoline. he threatened to burn the station down if the clerk didn't hand over the money in the register. the man got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. police believe he may be driving a ford fusion. 7:12. it was an april fool's joke that really backfired. what a south carolina woman texted to her daughter that landed her in jail. a missing snowboarder from san francisco is found alive. the action he took in the frigid temperatures. mixed news on the morning drive to work. some commutes are better.

7:15. we want to get back to our continuing coverage of the magnitude 8.2 earthquake in chile. this is video of people trying to run out of a store when the quake hit. large quakes are not unusual in chile. an 8.8 left 500 people dead and 1.5 million people homeless in 2010. last night, at least six people were killed. a tsunami warning was issued for chile, peru and ecuador following the quake, causing chile's coast to be evacuated. the national weather service

issued this map of the energy released by the tsunami in the south pacific following the earthquake. you can see the waves and the dark colors there. no watches or warnings were issued in california. but a tsunami advisory was issued for hawaii overnight. no evacuations had been ordered but beaches are closed to the public. >> we're pretty sure the waves are not large enough to cause flooding. they won't go inland. the hazard is strictly on the beach. >> the advisory comes a few days before the 68th anniversary of a tsunami that killed 159 people in hawaii following a magnitude 8.6 earthquake in alaska. other powerful tsunamis in recent memory include the one that followed a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in japan three years ago. hard to forget these images. that tsunami triggered 30-foot

waves and damaged several reactors. a 9.0 earthquake triggered a tsunami in the indian ocean. more than 230,000 people died in 14 countries including indonesia. 7:16. well, the death toll is now 28 from that landslide in washington state. 20 people are still missing. floodwaters are receding now in the town of oso, 55 miles northeast of seattle, but more rain is expected there. the mud, it is 70 feet thick in some places. it's also contaminated by hazardous chemicals and sewage. well, better news, a missing snowboarder from san francisco we told you about yesterday morning has been found alive. 26-year-old abraham finkelstein who went missing monday in the castle peak area near boreal, he's been found. he fin vanished and -- he

vanished and the search team spent more than a day looking for him. last night around 8:00, they got a call saying he was able to walk out of the cold, he found a house miles away from that search area. >> he's doing okay. he has some issues, he will be assessed for treatment. i believe them to be minor. hopefully, he will recover just fine. >> finkelstein who is an experienced snowboarder, built a shelter out of the snow to protect himself from those elements. >> that's one of the stories, you hear the news -- >> yeah. good news. let's check in with sal. what's going on in richmond, sal. >> on the richmond bridge traffic is gonna be not all that bad. we've been talking about this coming up to the bridge. definitely seeing a spring break effect, i noticed that some of the headlights were on. california state law says you need to have your headlights on whenever your wipers are in full operation even during the day. having a live lie discussion on my facebook page about this but

just remember, you could be cited if you don't have your headlights on any time your windshield wipers are in full operation. westbound bay bridge, this is a 20 to 25-minute drive time into san francisco. but the carpool lane is doing much better. there are no problems on the bridge itself. highway 4 has been slow because of some earlier issues. and so is highway 80 in fairfield and vacaville. both of these freeways are improving. transitioning to the south bay, 85 is slow after 17. so that's improvement. northbound 101 looks okay. 280 is slow at 17. 280 getting into the valley is not all that bad. 7:19. let's go to steve. >> you are welcome, steve. >> a pretty picture. breaks in the clouds finally. we're almost done with the system. have some rain totals and rain stats coming up. take a quick look around. maybe a couple of isolated showers around mt. diablo, blackhawk, highway 4. everything looks like it's

we still have showers. that means a wet commute. san jose and the santa clara valley has surprised me. 85 is slow after 17. 101 is slow up to mountain view. so definitely the spring break, some kids, college students not going to school. it's making it easier for those of us who have to work. back to the desk. a deadly 8.2 earthquake occurred in chile. and brian flores is in the studio following the latest developments and you are showing us the damage and the aftershocks they are still having. >> they are still going on. good morning. we continue to keep an eye on the website and chile continues to shake. just a few hours ago, a magnitude 5.0 aftershock rocked the same area where the main quake hit. since yesterday, there have been 35 aftershocks and experts say more are expected.

government officials said those living long the coast, to evacuate to higher ground. people sleeping in tents, cars and others waiting in hospital lobbies to hear about injured loved ones. the quake was centered in the sit of iquiqui -- in the city of iquiqui. we understand that six people have died. some were killed because of heart attacks. others because they were crushed from falling debris. three massive fires were reported in the country as well. chile's president who has only been in office for three weeks has declared a state of emergency and has deployed troops. meantime, experts warn of bigger quakes to hit the area soon. >> expect about another 8.8, 8.9 sometime here in the future. it could be tomorrow. it could be in 50 years. we don't know when it will occur. but the key point here is that this magnitude 78.2 is not the large earthquake we were

expecting for this area. >> experts say chile is in an area known as the ring of fire which has volcanos and fault lines. 500 people died in an 8.8 that was in 2010. that quake moved the geography of one city at least 10 feet to the west. now, tsunami warnings were issued when the quake hit but those have been canceled. a tsunami advisory, however, remains in effect for the state of hawaii. but experts say no major damage is expected. slightly bigger urnt can -- currents. back to you. >> this quake comes after the quake near los angeles. now, while there were no serious in that one, it knocked things off shelves. it rattled a lot of nerves. it caused water main breaks and rockslides down there. there were 23 aftershocks within the hour after that first quake. new this morning, the chp is investigating a deadly crash on an oakland freeway.

it happened shortly after midnight on southbound 880 near high street. investigators tell ktvu news the person killed had been involved in a car accident after spinning out on the freeway. at least two other cars hit him while he was walking away from the crash scene near the slow lane of the freeway. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the chp says the drivers who hit him are cooperating. memorial services continue today for the u.s. marine killed in a suspected drunk driving crash in fremont. this week, family members, friends and fellow marines are holding memorials all across the bay area for 23-year-old andrew silva. this morning's ceremony is at saint ann's church in union city. the marine just returned home from a tour of duty in afghanistan when he was killed last week. 7:35. the investigation goes on in san francisco in a deadly fire near the cal palace. an elderly woman was killed.

six other family members were hurt. the fire started yesterday evening near geneva in the sunny dale neighborhood. this is cell phone video. investigators say one man jumped from his third floor bedroom window to get away from the fast-moving flames. both firefighters and neighbors worked together to rescue the others. but the matriarch of the family did not survive. >> i'm happy i got to kiss her on the forehead one more time. i was able to be with my mother when we saw her. but a day won't go by when i don't think about her. >> the woman who died jane thompson. she was in her mid-80s. two of the six injured family members are listed in critical condition. the investigator ises are still search -- investigators are still itch soing for the cause of the fire.

a car belonging to a missing man was found tuesday morning off highway 1 north of belinas. searchers discovered a body nearby but it's not been formally identified. but family members say that car, it belonged to 93-year-old robert davis of san rafael. now, he was last seen february 26th leaving marin joe's restaurant in corte madera. >> my condolences to them. dad was a great guy and, you know, and -- i'm glad to see they've got closure. >> now, it was raining the tonight mr. davis disappeared. his family fears he may have become disoriented. investigators say very thick brush out there made it impossible to see that wrecked car from the road. happening now -- senators are getting their chance to ask about general motors' long delayed recall. they will question ceo mary barra along with two officials

from the transportation d. they are trying to find out why gm did not issue a recall when they first found out about the faulty ignition switches as well as the ntsb did not order a recall. they appeared before a congressional committee yesterday. muni's board of directors is now at the center of san francisco's heated battle over sunday parking. mayor ed lee wants to stop forcing drivers to feed the meters on sunday. but critics say that's a bad idea since charging for parking on sunday brings in more than $9 million a year. muni could really use that money. the muni board will likely have the final say when directors come up with this year's budget. oakland is taking a big step to stop illegal dumping on some parts of the city. we've been telling you for months about the problem of people leaving trash, clothes and furniture on city streets. now the city plans to place large waste containers around east oakland. they will start showing up by

the middle of the month. people are being asked to use the dump sters for all kind of trash. no questions asked. the hayward city council gave preliminary approval to an ordinance banning sleeping overnight on city property. the city spokesman says that's not intended to criminalize the homeless. but they need to make downtown hayward a safe place for everybody. the ordinance will have a final vote april 15th. if it's approved, it will take affect in may. meantime, san francisco supervisors voted to go ahead with a test of a private shuttle bus. buses using money bus stops. now, the critics wanted the board to reconsider that idea. they say supervisors had not considered the environmental impact of that plan. and now they say they may take this issue to court. the pilot program is due to start july 1st. it is 7:39. oakland as will host a day/night doubleheader after last night's game was washed

police are investigating a connection to two other sexual assaults at the world academy and at think college now earlier this year. now, during that most recent incident, police say the attacker went up to a 6-year- old girl. he allegedly lured her across the street with ice cream and then assaulted her. the scrool district will be adding -- school district will be adding more school and police patrols and are planning a special stranger danger assembly. the man in friday's attack is between 20, 25, between 5'6", 5'10", has an average build and black air, he may be driving a silver suv and he might have a force tattoo on his left calf. police are asking for the public's help finding a man accused of two groping incident near two pleasant hill schools. they released this video of the

a crash that injured a motorcyclist will go before a judge. now, michael quinn is scheduled to be arraigned on three felony dui counts. prosecutors say quinn ran a red light before he hit a motorcycle rider with a fire engine last june at 5th and howard. quinn resigned from the fire department after the crash. if he is convicted on all charges, he could get up to three years in prison. fbi agents raided another sacramento office linked to suspend state senator leland yee. the agents went to the office yesterday and people who witnessled the raid say the fbi -- witnessed the raid say the fbi focused on paperwork and a computer used by yee's assistant. a spokesperson for darrell steinberg said it was steinberg's office who told the fbi about that extra office of yee's. >> we told the fbi. we let them know that we found this office and we thought we

a large tree crashed on top of them late last night. tara moriarty has been more -- monitoring the cleanup for the last four hours. just spoke to a little girl who thought the whole thing was an april fool's joke. >> reporter: pretty adorable. she said she was asleep when the crash happened. she didn't hear it but heard the alarm go off. her brother heard it. it was no laughing matter. take a look. neighbors have been stopping by all morning. one of them in complete shock by what happened. >> that's amazing. oh, man. i just -- it's overwhelming. >> it's worse than a car zleent. >> reporter: we got a close look at the roots and the 15- foot-wide hole. we're in the 500 block of el dorado near the kaiser medical center where the tree came trashing down around 10:30 damaging three cars.

luckily, in one was hurt. power did go out to several homes. it was later restoredof the a little girl who lives here said she's upset that she will amonger be able to climb that old tree. >> well, we just moved here this summer and whenever i felt sad i went up and sang on it. it was kind of sad to see it fall. >> reporter: residents said their lights, heat and water went off. the roots from the tree damaged a pipe but now everything is restored. we did get a chance to speak to two of the three car owners. one of them is driving their car away right now. it has a hole in the back. it has a big gaping hole. he will take that to his mechanic right now. he said. and coming up at 8:45, we'll tell you exactly what he as well as another driver had to

say. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> wow. quite a sight there. thank you. in san francisco, check this out. another tree fell down and created quite a mess. it happened in 20th and eureka streets in the city's castro district just after 9:30 last night. firefighters responded and helped clear the mess. they did have to block off the road, though, during the cleanup. for realtime yum dates any time -- updates any time we are off air, you can download our weather app to your mobile device. developing news from chile this morning of an 8.2 magnitude earthquake, it hit off the northern coast of chile. this was centered off the northern coastal city of iquiqui. although they've canceled the watches and warnings of the tsunami between south america and mexico, that quake caused tsunami waves that were more than 6 feet fall. at least six deaths are blamed on the quakes, some of them from heart attacks and others because of severe injuries.

here's some photos. look at these. there have been reports of fires after the big earthquake. there have also been dozens of aftershocks this morning, including one that was a 6.2. now, ktvu's brian flores is following all of the developments from chile. brian will bring us a live report coming up at 8:30. oakland police are asking the public's help to solve a double shooting. it happened around 11:00 last night at bromley and seminary avenue. one man died at the scene while the other victim is in critical condition. no one is in custody yet. investigators are looking for witnesses or nearby surveillance video that might have caught the gunmen. daly city may soon follow the lead of san francisco and several other bay area cities. they may soon restrict the sale and the use of electronic cigarettes. the leaders are pushing for these cigarettes the same way

smoke something banned. that's because of second-hand smoke. but there's disagreement about how far the restrictions should go. dublin police are asking for the public's help finding a man who robbed a gas station and threatened to burn it down. police have released these surveillance pictures from the robbery last wednesday at a shell station on doherty road. officers say the man was armed with a baseball bat and a can of gasoline. he threatened to burn the station down if the clerk did not hand over the money in the register. the man got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. police believe he was driving a ford fusion. happening now -- microsoft kicking off the annual developers' conference in san francisco. the company is expected to give previews of the updates of windows. most people expect to see and hear a voice assistant with

apple's siri. the conference, by the way, runs through friday. there is a warning for commuters who travel near the new apple headquarters. the construction of the spaceship-like building will soon be causing some serious traffic tieups. janine de la vega joins us live from cupertino to tell us about the closures and show us what is happening right now. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. construction crews are here working at north wolfe road and homestead avenue. the number of lanes have been cut here. sidewalk access is also restricted in certain spots. that's proven to be a hassle for those who live and work in the area. this map shows the new apple campus and what it borders. it's stur rounded by -- surrounded by wolf, and homestead. there are roadwork signs and cones on streets, telling most tifts what's closed and where to -- motorists what's closed and where to due -- detour.

more work needs to be done to relocate the public utilities and to get the site ready for the new anle campus ii -- apple campus ii. prune ridge avenue is going to be affected. a section of it is closed. there are also lane reductions happening on homestead and tamtou. >> they've been good about keeping us posted. i'm just terribly disappointed they are closing pruneridge completely. that's our cutthrough to get to 280. now they bridge us down to homestead and wolf to get on the freeway. >> it doubles my commute time. my commute time is short. it's still a nuisance. for what used to be a simple commute is like -- usually backed up by a couple of hundred yards. >> the new apple headquarters will employ around 12,000 employees which city leaders said would benefit the local economy because of the additional tax revenue it should bring. until the project is completed, the businesses and people who live around it will be affected.

20s. mud is 70 feet thick in some places and also contaminated with hazardous materials and sewage. pg&e faces criminal charges for the deadly pipeline explosion that leveled a san bruno neighborhood. eight people died. dozens were hurt in the 2010 explosion that destroyed 38 homes. federal prosecutors filed felony charges that accuse pg&e of repeatedly violating the federal pipeline safety act. the charges claim the utility failed to keep proper records and did not conduct required inspections that could have prevented the disaster. if convicted, pg&e could face up to $6 million in fines and court-ordered oversight. pg&e's ceo released a statement saying "san bruno was a tragic accident. we have taken accountability and are deeply sorry. we have worked hard to do the right thing for victims, their families and the community, and

we will continue to do so." there is a happy ending for a missing snowboarder from san francisco we told you about him yesterday morning. 26-year-old abraham finking stein vanished while snowboarding on monday in the sierra back country. but last night about 8:00, rescuers got a call saying he was able to walk out of the cold. he found a house miles away from that search area. the people living in that house had just sat found -- down for dinner when he knocked on the door asking for help. >> he's okay. he has some issues. he will be treated for. i believe those to be minor. so hopefully he will recover just fine. >> he built a shelter out of snow to protect himself from the cold and the snow. >> i'm grateful.

evacuated. there have been several aftershocks still rattling that country. ktvu's brian flores in the studio now with the damage this has caused. >> reporter: speaking of aftershocks, there have been 35 of them since the quake struck northern chile. the latest one happened hours ago. it was a magnitude 5.1. that is by the way the same magnitude of earthquake from the la habra quake in southern california last friday. we continue to get video into the newsroom of when that quake struck. take a look. about 60 miles from the coastal town of iquiqui. we've seen footage of people leaving immediately and then the items falling off the shelves. we've seen people sleeping in tents outside or in sleeping bags because many had to evacuate to higher ground because of previous had i- issued tsunami warnings. since then the warnings have been lifted an some are currently returning home to assess the damage. this quake has turned deadly. the latest count, six people have died because of heart attacks or because of falling

debris say government officials. while we await word of any other damages, chile's president arrived in the coastal town and she has declared a state of emergency for three provinces there. >> translator: the country had been able to safely evacuate. i would like to call on those who remain to remain calm so we can assure their safety. >> reporter: and chile's president has deployed about 300 troops and about 100 anti- riot police to the area. back in 2010, about 500 chileans died after an 8.8 magnitude quake. but most of them were killed when a tsunami washed over coastal cities. those tsunamis were lifted from south america all the way up to the u.s. but a tsunami advisory remains in effect for hawaii. expects believe these waves will not cause major damage.

experts say this earthquake was pretty long as well. about 40 seconds in comparison, the loma prieta earthquake in 1989 was about 15 seconds. i'm brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the chp is investigating a deadly crash on an oakland freeway. it happened shortly after midnight on southbound 880 near high street. investigators tell ktvu news the person killed had been involved in a car accident after spinning out on the freeway. at least two other cars then hit him while he was walking away from the crash scene near the slow lane of the freeway. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the chp says the drivers who hit him are cooperating. memorial services continue today for the u.s. marine killed in a suspected drunk driving crash in fremont. this week, family members, friends and fellow marines are holding memorials all across the bay area for 23-year-old

andrew silva. this morning's ceremony will be at saint ann's catholic church in silva's hometown of union city. the young marine had just returned home from a tour of duty in afghanistan when he was killed last week. 8:35. the investigation in san francisco goes on this morning into a deadly fire near the cal palace last night. an elderly woman was killed. six other family members were hurt. that fire started yesterday evening near geneva avenue in san francisco's sunnydale neighborhood. take a look at some of the cell phone video of that building on fire. one man actually jumped out a third floor window to escape the fast-moving flames. firefighters and neighbors worked together to regular cue others. but the family's grandmother did not survive. >> i'm happy i got to kiss her on the forehead one more time. i was able to be with my mother when we saw her. but a day won't go by when i

avoid a future tragedy. they include investigating in state-of-the-art security equipment. family members of a missing marin county man finally have some answers this morning after a car belonging to that missing man was found down an embankment in marin county. a caltrans worker found the wrecked toyota camry tuesday morning on highway 1, north of balinas, they discovered a body nearby that's not been formally identified. the family member said the car belonged to 93-year-old robert davis of san rafael. he was last seen february 26th leaving marin joe's restaurant in core tau corte madera. >> my condolences. a great guy. you know, i'm glad to see they've got closure. >> it was also raining the night mr. davis disappeared. his family fears he may have

since charging for sunday parking brings in $89 million a year. muni could really use the money. oakland is using a new tactic to keep city streets clean. it will be putting large trash dumpsters in several locations around east oakland this month. we've been reporting on neighbors complaining that clothes, furniture and trash have been dumped on their streets for months. now the city council encouraging people to use the bins rather than leaving things on the street. 8:40. the hayward city council gave preliminary approval to an ordinance to ban sleeping overnight on city property. the city spokesman says it is not aimed at criminalizing the homeless but they say they need to make downtown hayward a safe place for everybody. this ordinance will have a final vote on april 15th. if approved, it will take affect in may. san francisco supervisors voted they are gonna go ahead

cupertino, the construction of the spaceship like building will soon cause major traffic tieups. drivers are warned, expect road closures and also detours. a magnitude 8.2 earthquake hit off the northern coast of chile. six people were either crushed to death or had heart attacks. we're also reporting there's damage and fires. back here at home on the stormwatch this morning, we're monitoring the cleanup. it's underway all around the bay area after the wet weather the past several days. rain soaked the ground, causing a lot of trees to topple over like this one last night in san francisco's castro district. that downed tree took out another tree on the same street. in oakland, a giant tree came down on top of three cars last night. one of those cars was flattened. tara moriarty joining us live in oakland. you are talking to people who were almost crushed by that

tree. i know they had to be terrified. >> reporter: oh, yeah. scary moments. a man said he was walking his dog when the tree almost fell on top of him. right now, crews are here. they say it will take them about two hours to get this mess cleaned up. a little girl who lives in the house says she was asleep when the tree fell. when the alarm went off and her brother woke her up, she thought it was an april fool's joke. obviously, no laughing matter. >> that's amazing. oh, man. >> reporter: we got an upclose look at the roots of the tree. a 15-foot-wide hole in the yard. we're on el dorado where the tree came crashing down damaging three cars. luckily, no one was hurt. crews worked overnight removing the limbs blocking the streets. power went out to several homes but was later restored. one man was nearby when the tree was restored. >> my uncle was walking over there.

he heard a crackling and then the -- and then a few seconds, the tree had fallen down. >> he came into the house, he goes, mom, let me show you something. he said i don't know if i would have been walking through this door five minutes ago. >> reporter: we talked to one woman whose car received the brunt of the damage. >> well, i mean, i had to call into my boss and say i'm not coming in for a while today to figure out why i'm doing. i texted her this morning say i'm not going to be in for a while. there is a tree on top of my car. >> reporter: now, the little girl who lives here said she's sad she won't be able to climb her tree anymore. she said the light, heat and water were cut off in the house last night. the roots from the tree damaged a pipe but now everything is restored. once again, we want to mention the fact that crews are gonna be out here for at least the next two hours with the wood chopper. they will grind up all of this
