extended forecast and what is happening outside the door coming up. >> time now 7:01. new this morning a second uc berkeley student has been diagnosed with the measles. allie live on the campus now to tell us how the university is responding the best way to avoid getting that virus. good morning. >> good morning. the best way to avoid getting the virus is to get the vaccine. that's what will be happening here at the university health services center on the berkeley campus. health officials will give the vaccine to anyone who wants or needs it's today between ten and one this afternoon. this all comeses after health officials confirmed yesterday that a berkeley student was infected measl es and may have exposed people they say the student rode bart home from oakland airport on march 30th and attended classes on the campus april first through the third. measlesls is highley contagious. the virus can stay airborne for up to two hours.

if you get the vaccine with in 72 hours of being exposed you can be protected. health officials say if someone had it before or has it the vaccine they are unlikely to get sick. this is the second time in as many months that berkeley has had to deal with a student with measles who took bart. another one exposed an unknown number of passengers the infected student in this case is not related to the one in february. coming up in the next hour. we will talk about what the university is doing for the classmates of this infected student and talk about how long lue have to watch out for the symptoms of the virus. live in berkeley. >> all right. time now 7:03. california has seen a high number of measles cases. yesterday the state department said there have been at least 51 cases this year compared to only four the same time last year. most involve people who traveled to or were in contact

with known measles cases. also new, you may be $233,000 richer this saturday morning if you bought a mega millions lottery jackpot ticket in union city. some very lucky person matched five out of six numbers last night. that ticket was bought at island pacific supermarket. someone in los angeles won the 30 million dollar prize after matching all the numbers in last night's draws. that was bought at the century city 76 gas station. that winner has 180 days to claim the prize. >> happening now, several people are without water after a water main break-in oakland. it happened at 17th avenue and east 21st just a few hours ago. you can see that water gushing up from the street, causing a bit of a mess. east bay mud is at the scene and they say they will dig into the streets to repair that broken line. rescue operation is underway to help a family stranded a thousand miles off

the coast of mexico. airthe family set sail last month for a trip around the worm. their 1-year-old got sick and their 36-foot boat lost power in rough seas. on thursday night a four person crew from the california air national guard base in mountain view parachuted into help them. they say the family is in good spirits and the girl is stable. >> so far they have said they -- they have plenty of food and water on the boat and plenty of medical supplies. >> a navy ship will take them to shore today. they will then be transferred to a helicopter to take them to a medical facility. >> people are still shocked this saturday morning about what happened last night at the oakland coliseum. >> due to field conditions, tonight's game has been postponed. >> can you believe that? 15 minutes before the a's were supposed to play the mariners,

the giants beat the dodgers 8- 4. >> happening today the city of san francisco is hoping to get hundreds of firearms off the streets during a gun buy back event. 529 guns were turned in at past events in the city and the buy back is sponsored by church groups, city supervisors and the mayor. they say that the program is part of a public safety strategy. that buy back is going to be held from nine to two. the new grocery outlet store on bayshore. $100 will be paid for any gun turned in. 200 for assault weapons. there is a limit of five firearms a person. >> army officials say they may never know motive behind the shooting rampage at fort hood. three were killed, 16 hurt but the shooter killed himself. investigators say he argued with other soldiers just before the shooting. now before the shooting lopez had been treated for depression

and stress. he was also being checked for ptsd. however the army said that his mental health issues don't appear to be the main cause for that rampage. >> we have not found any specific traumatic event, wounds received in action, contact with the enemy or anything else specific that he may have been exposed too while deploy. >> the service scheduled next wednesday on the base for those three soldier who were killed. the fort hood shooting has restarted the debate about military people carrying weapons on military bases. right now concealed personal weapons are banned inside united states military bases. some want to repeal the ban bypassing the safe military bases act. the army chief of staff said that's not necessary. >> we have those that are armed. i believe that allows us the level of protection necessary.

>> the safe military bases act is not yet scheduled for congressional vote. >> walnut creek police say they are seeing an increase in home burglaries in a neighborhood that doesn't usually have a problem with crime. it's a gated senior community with a guarded security entrance and only one road in and out the police say burglary reports have increased over the past six moss, so now the department is stepping up it's patrols. >> there was no patrols whatsoever. they wouldn't come unless they were specifically called. now they are here quite often and show quite a presence. >> police have not made any arrests. tyson is recalling more than 75,000 pounds of chicken nuggets. that's after customers reported finding small pieces of plastic in their food. it involves five pound bags of frozen white meat chicken nuggets sold at sam's club stores across the country. it also includes 20-pound bulk packs of nugget shaped breast patties.

that plane that went missing nearly a month ago. expects say the battery that run the black boxes will run out soon. search crews are using a toad pinger locater pinger to try to help them find the machine. it listens for signals from what they hope is an 't damaged black box. many say it's a long shot but they hope it works. >> we have nothing to loose. certain have a shot in the indian ocean than it has alongside the dock. if they can't find the boxes experts say it could take years to find the plane. the flight disappeared on march 8th while on its way touching a. it was carrying 239 people. homeland security are launching a campaign to get more countries to track lost and stolen passports. homeland security officials say many do not report missing passports, a trend they call disturbing and alarming. after 9/11 the criminal police organization created a database to allow 190 countries to track

police officer jason johnson. the group spent nine days getting some perspective on the difference between life in the city's bayview area and in west africa. officials with the san francisco court are warning people about a scam that involves someone who has been posing as a police officer. court officials say someone is calling people and telling them there is a warrant out for their arrest because they failed to show up for a summons. the court said it never makes calls asking for information or money. anyone no believes they are a victim are asked to call the police. >> there is a new study that says the characters you see on cereal boxes may look the you for a reason. adult cereals are put on higherselfs and children are put on the lower shelves. they found that the characters on the adult look straight ahead. they meet you in the eye. they say that the character others kid's appear to be looking down as if they want to

vaccine after the student may have been exposed to a unknown number of bart riders and other students. officials say the student rode bart from oakland to berkeley after returning a trip the student also attended class from april first to the third. the current case is unrelated to another case from february where a student who went on bart also had the measles. the best way to avoid it is to get the vaccine with in 72 hours of exposure. today uc berkeley and the city will hold a clinic for people to get the vaccine. it'll be held from ten to one. there have been a high number of cases throughout the state this year. yesterday the california department of public health reported there had been at least 51 cases this year compared to four the same time last year. most of those cases involved people who traveled to or were in contact with known measles cases. >> time now 7:32, dramatic rescue operation underway. trying to help a family stranded about a thousand miles

off the coast of mexico. eric and charlotte coffman and their children, they set sale last month from san diego for a trip around the world. however, their daughter became very ill and the boat lost power. thursday night a four person crew from the california air national guard based at moffet field, they parachuted down to help them. they are saying that the family is in good spirits, the little girl is stable a ney vai ship is expected to take them to shore sometime today movement back here at home wet roadses and high speeds blamed for an accident in santa rose that sent two to the hospital. the chp said a trash truck was going to fast, it lost control after leaving highway 101 at river road. the truck slid across the road, hit a light pole and then went into an intersection causing two other cars to crash. two people were taken to the hospital, they are expected to survive. >> police are teaming up with

charges. the officer is a ceus of stealing prescription painkillers the apartments of senior citizens. he has been on paid leave hips february. he has ptsd as well as prescription drug abuse. >> he was fighting very serious addiction problem. it started out with prescriptions, and he had an on duty injury. >> yesterday a judge set bail for him at $480,000. he is due back in court on tuesday. >> a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the family of a father and daughter killed by a reckless driver in 2012. the two were both killed while riding their bikes. the driver led not guilty. so far no word on what sort of damages they are seeking in that lawsuit. with the alter nation

the disease. the student rode barton march 30 march 30th and attended classes the first through the third. if you get the vaccine with in 72 hours of being exposed you can be protected. >> personally i'm not that worried but it is a serious issue. it's not a joke. i think it'll be okay. >> reporter: this is the second time in as many months that they have had to deal with the student with measles. in februarya a student exposed an unknown number of passengers to the disease. berkeley health officials say the infected student in this case is not related to the one in february. now measles symptoms can be start one to three week its after exposure. first they seem similar to a cold or flu. after three to four days after the symptoms start is when the

patient gets blotchy red rash and health officials say the person can be contagious for days before and after that rash breaks out. anyone who wants to get a vaccine can come to the university health services center to do so. >> all right a high number of cases around california this year. yesterday the state department of public health reported there had been at least 51 cases this year. compared to only four the same time last year. most of those cases involved people who traveled to or were in contact with known measles cases. >> also new this morning, you may be $233,000 richer this saturday morning if you bought a mega millions lottery jackpot ticket. some very lucky person matched five out of six numbers in last night's drawing. that ticket was bought at island pacific surer market. someone down in los angeles

again talking about advisory for the coast. i will have that and have a look at the extended forecast. >> new this morning, a second berkeley student has been diagnosed with the measles. allie live for the on campus with how the university is responding and the best way to avoid coming down with the virus. >> reporter: the best way to avoid the virus is to get the vaccine against the measles if you haven't gotten a vaccine already. between ten and one this afternoon anyone can come down to the university health services center here. and get the vaccine. they are offering it after they confirmed yesterday that a student infected with measles may have exposed other students and other people on campus to the disease. according to health firs, this student rode bart, march 30th and then attended classes april first through the third. measles is very contagious. the virus can stay airborne for two hours. if you get the vaccine with in

72 hours of being exposed you can be protected from the disease. health firms say if someone had it before or had the vaccine they are unlikely to come down with it again. this is a second time in as many months that berkeley has had to deal with a student with measles. in february a student going to campus on bart exposed an unknown number of passengers to the disease. berkeley health officials say the infected student in this recent case is not related to the one in february. across california, state health officials have seen the increase in the number of cases a california department of public health -- the california department of public health reported 51 cases this year. health officials say most of those cases involved people who have traveled recently or were many contact with other people who had confirmed cases of measles. again back here at the university health services center on the berkeley campus they will be offering the measles vaccine between ten and

old on stevenson street. it's a neighborhood boreddenning the regional trail. candles are marking the spot where he was found. police say it appears he was targeted. they say he had a long criminal record and even survived a bullet wound to the head in 2001. >> he also has a extensive history with our department for weapons and drug related offenses. he was able to speak to police before he died from his wounds. so far no arrests have been made. >> the stage is set for a federal trial involving a suspended state senator encore ropings charges. yesterday a jury returned indictments on him and 28 other defendants. the indictment mirrors the criminal complaints released last week. it alleges that yee and former school board president keith jackson promised political favors for bribes from undercover fbi agents. all 29 people are due in court next tuesday to respond to the charges. >> with this many defendants

ptsd and also prescription drug abuse. >> he was fighting a very serious addiction problem. it started out with prescription. he had an on duty injury. >> yesterday a judge set bail for him at $480,000. he is due back in court on tuesday. >> a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the family of a father and daughter killed by a reckless driver in 2012. the two were both killed while riding their bikes in concord. the driver a teenager at the time pled not guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison. no word on what sort of damages they are seeking in that lawsuit. a san francisco police officer is recovering from nonlife threatening injuries after being hit by a suspect in a stolen vehicle. it happened yesterday about 4:30 near turk and jones. police say that the suspect was trying to drive away as they

attempted to take him into custody. he crashed in to several vehicles and then struck the officer. police say that the suspect then got out of his car and took off running but officers were able to catch him. >> the oakland police department welcomed a record number of graduates from its latest melissa police aca demy. they were cheering for 47 new police officers. now, there are 659 sworn officers. two more academy classes scheduled later this year may boost that to more than 700. the signing salley is about $70,000 a year. more than a dozen people came together yesterday raisinga flag in awareness of all the people still waiting for or transplants. it took place at john muir. family and friends of the late officer took a moment, remembering his sacrifice.

this afternoon. now, this all comes after health officials in the city and the university confirmed yesterday a uc berkeley student was infected with measles and may have exposed people to the disease. now, the student apparently rode bart from the oakland airport to berkeley on march 30th and then attended classes on the uc berkeley campus april 1 through 3. measles is extremely contagious. health officials warn the virus can stay airborne for up to two hours. but if you get the vaccine within 72 hours of being exposed, you can be protected from the disease. >> i'm pretty sure i've been vaccinated. if i hadn't, i would, though. that's terrifying. >> it's very easy. it's a shot in the arm and you won't get the measles. sounds common sense to me. >> reporter: this is the second time in as many months uc berkeley has had to deal with the measles exposure. berkeley health officials say the infected student in this

recent case is not related to the one in february. now, measles symptoms can begin one to three weeks after exposure. at first, symptoms seem close to flu symptoms. usually around three to four days after the onset of symptoms, people then break out in a blotchy red rash. now, health officials warn that an infected person is contagious for several days before and after that rash breaks out, so the uc berkeley student may have unknowingly exposed his or her fellow classmates to the disease before he or she had all the symptoms. live in berkeley, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. there's been a rising numbers of measles cases around california this year. yesterday, the state department of public health reported there had been at least 51 cases this year compared to only four at the same time last year. most of those cases involve people who have traveled to or were in contact with known measles cases. well, a rescue operation is under way to help a family

stranded a thousand miles off the coast of mexico. eric and charlotte kaufman and hire two children set sail from san diego last month for a trip around the world. but their 1-year-old daughter got sick and their 36-foot boat lost power in rough seas. on thursday night, a four- person crew from the california air national guard based at moffett field in mountain view parachuted in to help them. they say the family is in good spirits and the girl is stable. >> so far, they have said that they have plenty of food and plenty of water on the boat and plenty of medical supplies. >> a navy ship is expected to take them to shore sometime today. the family will then be transferred to a helicopter, which will fly them to a medical facility. 9:05. happening right now, 15 people have no water after a 6-inch water main broke in oakland. this happened on 17th avenue and east 21st street, just a couple of hours ago. look at all the water gushing up from the street. east bay mud, still at the scene. they say they will have to dig into the street to fix that

broken line. it's expected to take most of the morning to get it fixed. oakland may have a new police chief at the start of next month. yesterday, mayor jean quan said a selection could come during the first or second week of may. last week, mayor quan announced interim chief sean went has her support. went was also praised by the police department's federal monitor. the search has also been opened to other candidates since the recent hiring of a new recruiting firm. san leandro police are looking for a man they say tried to rob a 7-eleven store. he ran away after being charged at by two store employees. he entered the store on east 14th just before midnight. police say he was wearing a ski mask and had a gun. the employees tried to hold onto him until police arrived, but he did manage to escape. he was last seen running on bellevue drive towards san leandro boulevard. walnut creek police are searching for a man who stole a woman's purse and cell phone

last night on broadway plaza, in front of the corner's tavern. police say the man drove off in a red-colored honda hatchback, possibly a honda civic. the victim told police the man was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and was covering his face with a dark scarf. he's believed to be in his early 20s, about 6' 1 with a medium build. walnut creek police say there's been an increase in home burglaries in a neighborhood that doesn't usually have a problem with crime. ralph moore is a gated senior community with only one way in and out. but burglary reports there have increased over the past six months. now the department is stepping up its patrols. >> there were no patrols whatsoever. they wouldn't come here unless they were specifically called. now they are here quite often and show a presence. >> police have not made any arrests. 9:07. happening today, the city of san francisco is hoping to get hundreds of firearms and weapons off the streets during a gun buyback event that started a couple of minutes

ago. 529 guns were turned in in the past events in the city. the buyback is sponsored by church groups, by city supervisors, and by mayor ed lee, who says the program is part of a comprehensive public safety strategy. now, the buyback has just started at 9:00 this morning. it will go on until 2:00 this afternoon at the new grocery outlet store on bayshore boulevard, near sunny dale. $100 will be paid for any gun that's turned in. $200 for an assault weapon. there is a limit, though. five firearms per person, and they do have to be unloaded and in working condition. u.s. army officials say they may never know the motive behind wednesday's shooting rampage at fort hood, texas. 34-year-old army specialist ivan lopez killed three soldiers. he wounded 16 others and then killed himself. investigators say lopez argued with other soldiers just before the shootings. lopez had been treated for

hundreds of people came together in arlington, washington to pray for the victims of last month's deadly landslide. >> therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way -- ♪ >> the arlington ministerial association worked with more than 30 church communities to host last night's event. a large banner that read "together" was hanging behind the podium. search officials say 30 people were killed when the mudslide buried the community of oso on march 22nd. they say more than a dozen people are still missing. some victims of last month's landslide are looking into suing the government. many of the victims say they didn't know about the danger of a collapse, despite years of prior warnings. most law experts say the chance of winning a lawsuit would be slim. typically, government agencies in washington state are not liable for landslide damages. another option might be to sue the logging company that clear- cut a small section of the plateau above the hillside. but at this point, it's unclear if that logging contributed to the slide. time now, 9:24. if you ever wanted to own

sanitary business, where people respect it and want to come to you, it's kind of hard when you have stray cats. >> downtown business owners say something needs to be done to curb the growing stray cat population. the ordinance would make feeding cats on city property a misdemeanor, but volunteers with local animal organizations say that's not going to solve the problem. >> it's cruel. it's ridiculous. you can't trap and release cats unless you can feed them. >> the city council is scheduled to vote on the issue next tuesday. time now, 9:26. there's a new study out that says the characters you see on cereal boxes may be looking at you for a reason. a cornell university study found that adult cereals are put on higher shelves. kids cereals are on the lower shelves. they also found the characters on adult cereals look straight ahead at adult eyes. they say characters on kids cereals look like they are looking down, almost as if they are trying to establish eye contact with the kids. >> the eyes were inreflected at

airport on march 30, after an ought-of-state trip, then attended classes on the uc berkeley campus april 1 through 3. >> it's not uncommon that people are going to class supersick. >> personally, i'm not that worried, but it is a serious issue. measles isn't a joke. i think it will be okay. i think they are doing a good job with everything right now. >> reporter: measles is highly contagious. health officials warn the virus can stay airborne for up to two hours. but if you get the vaccine within 72 hours of expo sure, you can be protected from the disease, which is why health officials urge people who may have come in contact with the infected student to get vaccinated now. this is the second time in as many months uc berkeley has dealt with the issue. in february, a student exposed an unknown number of bart passengers to the disease. the infected student in this recent case is not related to the one in february. now, if someone's had the vaccine as a child or has had

measles already, health officials say it's not likely they will get it again, so they are already safe. however, the concern is expo sure to other people in the community. children cannot get the measles vaccine until they are about a year old, so babies are particularly vulnerable to measles, when the people around them are not vaccinated. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. california has seen a high number of measles cases. yesterday, the state department of health said there's been at least 51 measles cases this year compared to only four of them same time last year. most involved people who traveled to or were in contact with known measles cases. well, the stage is now set for a federal trial involving suspended state senator leland yee on corruption charges. yesterday, a grand jury returned indictments on yee and 28 other defendants. the indictment mirrors the criminal complaint which was released last week. it alleges that yee and former san francisco school board president keith jackson promised political favors for bribes from undercover fbi agents. all 29 people are due in court next tuesday to respond to the

charges. >> with this many defendants and charges this serious, each defendant is suspicious of every other defendant, wondering is his lawyer walking in and talking with the authorities right now? >> yee is free on $500,000 bail. nearly two dozen bills introduced by state senator leland yee are in the pipeline, but their future is in limbo. one is a covers shall gun control measure that would ban the sale of rifles with a bullet button. it allows magazines to be detached quickly so another can be loaded. technically, other lawmakers could carry yee's bills, but former senate president pro tem says it's not likely to happen this year. >> i don't think anybody wants to move a bill that's got senator yee's name on it frankly. there is a real pall over the legislature right now. people are very upset. >> he says yee's bills will likely be introduced again next year. time is 9:35. disgraced former san francisco

supervisor ed jew has served five years in federal prison. now he's going to county jail. he'll be serving a 30-day sentence for lying about where he lived when he ran for supervisor in 2006. yesterday, his lawyer made an unsuccessful attempt to persuade a judge to sentence him to home confinement and community service. he was in federal prison for extortion, mail fraud, and bribery conviction. his lawyer says he had helped other inmates with their education while he was in federal prison. >> he'll do things in prison that he continued to do. he would rather not spend that 30 days in jail, but you're not going to argue with the judge. >> he has to perform 200 hours of community service. he is expectedded to surrender to authorities next thursday. a former west sacramento police officer is being sentenced to 205 years in prison. officer sergio alvarez was arrested last year. he was accused of kidnapping and raping women while on

patrol. prosecuters say he forced victims to perform sexual acts by threatening to arrest them on a variety of charges. >> these victims were vulnerable and that's why he preyed upon them. and that also makes the case very challenging. >> during a trial, a letter from alvarez's estranged wife was read. she said she left him two months before he was arrested because he started becoming angry and hot-tempered. she also says she suspected him of being a sexual predator. a suspended concord police officer will be back in court next week to face several felony charges. officer matthew switzer is accused of stealing prescription pain killers from the apartments of senior citizens. he has been on paid leave since february. his defense attorney says switzer suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder and prescription drug abuse. >> he was fighting a very serious addiction problem that started out with prescriptions. he had an on-duty injury.

>> yesterday, a judge set switzer's bail to $480,000. he is due back in court on tuesday. a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the family of a father and daughter killed by a reckless driver in 2012. solomon nuri and his 9-year-old daughter were both killed while riding bikes in concord. the driver, a teenager at the time, pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter and was sentencedded to seven months in prison. no word on the damages being sought in the lawsuit. police in san leandro are teaming up with local people and business owners, creating a database of private surveillance cameras. police say surveillance video is a valuable tool in fighting and solving crimes. that's why san leandro police are trying to locate as many private security systems as they can. by creating a list of available resources, police officers won't have to go door to door looking for surveillance video. >> if we knew exactly where to go to right away and we were able to bypass some of the

other residences that where he knew didn't have video, those officers could spend time actually out in the field looking for the suspect. >> police say so far 26 people and two businesses have registered to be a part of the new surveillance camera database. pittsburg police investigating that city's first homicide of the year. police say a neighbor found 36- year-old san luis vega astephenson street in a neighborhood that borders the delta dianza regional trail. there are candles marking the spot where vega was found. it appears he was targeted. police say he has a long criminal record and even survived a bullet wound to the head in 2001. >> he also has an extensive history with our department for weapons and drug-related offenses. >> investigators say he was able to speak to the police before he died from his wounds. so far, no arrests have been made. more than a dozen people came together yesterday to raise the flag in awareness of

the people still waiting for organ transplants. the ceremony took place at john mere medical center. friends and family of the late stage officer kenyon youngstrom took a moment to remember his sacrifice. officer youngstrom was killed in 2012 during a routine traffic stop. his organs helped save the lives of four other people. >> kenny was shot and killed serving the people of the state of california and he died gives his life back to the citizens of california. >> the california transplant donor network says about 10,000 people in northern california are on the wait list for organ transplants. time is 9:40. you know it's almost easter. in the spirit of the holiday, the heyward animal shelter is holding a bunny adoption. now, it will be held today from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. look at that face, at the animal shelter on barns court. organizers say taking care of a bunny is not easy. there's a lot involved. that's why they are also

. 9:44. look at this. federal agents found two sophisticated drug smuggling tunnels between tijuana and san diego. a 73-year-old woman has been charged with helping to run one of those operations. first tunnel, 600 yards long, 70 feet down. it was found under the cement floor of a warehouse filled with children's toys and tv's. the second tunnel was more than

job training programs to help people find a job. a transgender student in oregon is making headlines after a christian university has refused to let him live on campus with other male students. chase is a sophomore at george fox university. he is undergoing a mail-to- female transition and is taking legal steps to change his gender. but he had to file a complaint with the u.s. department of education after he was discriminated against based on sex. >> it's ridiculous. it's deeply discriminatory. i do not agree with it at all. i think he should be treated like any other male, because he is a male. >> a spokesman for the university says placing him with other males would be against the school's theological commitments. the university says it has given the student two options, either live on campus in his own room or finding housing off campus. a woman thought her dreams were in jeopardy when she got so sick she had to drop out of

high school. now she's achieved something no one else has. last night, she was among the more than 60 people who graduated from the castro valley adult school. she is being recognized for her achievements and also for where she's headed. >> reporter: selin wong loved high school. she was a 4.0 student, played flute and tennis and dreamed of college, and then at the start of her junior year, she got sick. >> i was ill with stomach aches, headaches, dizziness and sensitivity to light. >> reporter: it was so bad, she dropped out of school. by the time she recovered two years later, she was 19 and too old to go back. since she couldn't go back to san leandro high school, she came here to the castro valley adult school. she wanted her ged, but didn't realize that coming here would open up the door to so much more. >> i remember going there, crying the first day, like how did i even end up here? >> reporter: the staff told her she had options and she could have her dream. >> you wanted to go to college?

>> yeah. >> how badly? >> very badly. >> reporter: she completed two years of classes in just 11 months, then reached for what she once thought was impossible. then one day last fall, her mom called to tell her a package had arrived. >> when i opened it it, oh, my god, it was actually columbia university. >> reporter: selin is the first person to ever graduate from castro valley adult school and go straight to an ivy league school. the 20-year-old has sense spoken in sacramento about the importance of adult education and last week was inducted into the alameda county women's hall of fame. her accomplishment brings her family to tears. >> it's really big in my family because i am the first one who goes straight to four-year. >> reporter: the road ahead may not be easy. she still needs scholarships and knows things will be hard for her family when she's gone, but also knows what it's like

the wind turbines are slowly cranking there. partly cloudy skies. you can see them overhead and we will have a northwest breeze for the afternoon, especially along the coastline. with the sun shining, if you're thinking about heading out to walk the dog, maybe play in the sand, this to be aware of. the system that brought us some rain yesterday kept those showers going most of the afternoon and into the evening hours, now pushing off to the east. we have a ridge of high pressure pulling in, just in time for the weekend. as it strengthens, it's going to continue to drive our temperatures up. we're sort of in the transition. until this takes over, we have that north-northwesterly breeze again with the pressure gradient for the afternoon. i think the coast will be especially breezy and some of us inside right around the bay seeing the wind pick up for the afternoon as well. keep that in mind. temperatures from yesterday into today, up by 5, 10 degrees, especially the farther inland you go. for the afternoon on sunday, we'll take a hike.

. a school bus driver in missouri is looking for a new job after being caught on his phone, texting while he was driving. now, the video was recorded on thursday during a rain storm. the driver had one hand on the wheel, but can be seen looking down at the phone which he had in his lap. missouri is one of seven states in the country that does not ban texting while driving. >> i think it's crazy. i think it's as dangerous as drunk driving. >> this all comes as the department of transportation launches its first-ever national campaign against
