this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. evening i'm ken wayne. a criminal in the east bay caught at his own game. he was chased out of the convenience store by the clerk he was trying to rob. christina, what's the clerk saying about all of this? >> reporter: well, he says looking back it may not have been the smartest thing to do, but he was just reacting to a gun being turned on him. an armad robber at this 711 friday night was chased out of a store without any money. one of them is named mark. >> i saw a guy coming around the corner. i thought he was going to go use the sink. when i saw him pass up the sink, i turned and that's when i saw the gun. >> reporter: mark gets

confronted behind the counter. he made a split decision to fight back. >> i saw the opportunity and grabbed it from bothens and yanked it out of his hands. >> reporter: you can see he's now the one holding the gun. >> i was a little nervous at first. then adrenaline kicks in. >> it's a high caliber small handgun. >> reporter: investigators later determined the gun was unloaded, but the brave clerk didn't know that at the time. this. is not something that we advocate that the regular person does. it's extremely dangerous, but in this case it worked out. >> reporter: with several cameras around the store, investigators are using surveillance to track the suspect. >> when you look back on it, it's like i'm a family man. i gotta think about my family. >> reporter: for him, it was just another day on the job.

a job he's only had for three months. >> some people say hero. some people say brave. others say stupid. it's a little bit of all three. i don't know if it was the right thing, but it got a gun off the street. >> reporter: police believe this guy may be from out of town. take a look at the clothes he's wearing. he's described as a latino or white man in his 20s. if you know who he is, you're asked to call police. some scary moments aboard a pleasure boat this afternoon. a fire on the boat when it was about half a mile off shore. 8 people including children were on board. they knew the boat was getting hot, but they didn't know where the fire was. the coast guard advised them to put on their life vests and jump into the bay. they were picked up by people

on another pleasure boat. no injuries were reported and no word what caused the fire. new and potentially promising developments tonight for the search for the missing malaysia airliner. china said one of their ships picked up a signal that may be one of the black box recorders. there's concern the batteries could expire in a matter of days. the batteries weren't due to be replaced in a couple months. >> they are duce for replacement in june 2014. >> there's 91 confirmation they are related to flight 370. a u.s. navy ship is expected to reach a crippled sail boat with a sick girl on

board by about 10:00 o'clock tonight. a family was attempting to sail to new zealand, but their daughter got sick. this video of a team parachuting down to the boat on thursday. they say the girl is stable. plans to transfer the family to the navy ship at first light tomorrow. oakland police say a woman found dead near lake merit was a victim of a homicide. the bicyclist found the body outside of recreation center at park boulevard and third avenue. police have not said how she was killed or released her identity and no one has been arrested. shoppers are on edge after a 2nd armed robbery in just a week at a popular east bay mall. live in walnut creek, john. >> reporter: it is saturday

night and lots of people are coming here to celebrate, but what happened over there last night has some people on guard. downtown walnut creek is clone for nordstrom, female an marcus and night life. >> about 11:15 there was a woman in front of the corner tavern who was robbed at gun point. >> reporter: the woman left the restaurant and walked to her car outside when the man demanded her purse and pulled it from her. police say something similar happened last weekend outside yogurt land on california. >> she works in the city. you work in the city, you get mugged, that's supposed to happen. but not in walnut creek. >> reporter: there was an attempted robbery inside the parking structure. >> it's concerning that these guys are out here. >> reporter: it happened last

night, but the robbery was unsuccessful. the victims even went to see a movie afterwards. >> i work in downtown wall nought career in a bar. we always tell people safety in numbers. >> reporter: these crimes have many people being careful. >> you have to be aware of what's around you. not spending your time looking down at your phone and be aware of your surroundings. >> reporter: after the crime outside corner's tavern, the robber got in a car and sped away. the victim was unhurt. police in modesto are investigating a stabbing at a sleep over. a 13 year old girl stabbed her 11 year old sister and a 13 year old friend this morning before turning the knife on herself. two of the girls are in

critical condition. neighbors say she may have special needs. investigators won't confirm that. a 98 year old man has died after being hit by a car while crossing the street in berkeley. it happened in ban croft way and sacramento street. the driver did stop and is cooperating with the investigation. san francisco police took almost 200 guns off the street today. officers conducted a buy-back program collecting handguns, rifles and assault rifles. those turning in received gift cards up to $200 for each weapon. >> we haven't stopped since we started. we have to get additional people out because we're so busy. >> one man turning in a gun told us it had been in his

california. an infected student took bart from oakland airport to berkeley on march 30eth and attended classes april first through third. >> it's not uncommon that people are coming to class sick. >> reporter: measles is highly contagious. >> if someone in the infectious period is in a room like this and talks or coughs or sings or cries, the virus is suspended in the air. >> if you get vaccinated within 72 hours of being exposed to the virus, you can be protected from it. >> the measles virus is probably a good thing to take advantage of. personally i'm not that worried, but it is a serious issue. >> reporter: in february, a student commuting to campus on bart exposed an unknown number of passengers to the disease. berkeley health officials say the two cases are not related.

state wide there has been an increase in the number of cases. 51 cases this year compared to 4 for the same period last year. >> we know there's more measles in other parts of the world. newly this year, we are seeing an outbreak related to the philippines. >> just a shot in the arm and you won't get the measles anymore. sounds common sense to me. >> reporter: in berkeley, ktvu channel 2 news. more key tails now. there have been 51 measles cases in california this year. orange county has the most with 21. there are 11 in the bay area. at this time last year there were only 4 measles cases throughout california. a high school teacher in santa monica is on leave after an altercation with a student.
