good sunday morning everybody. you saw katie utehs just walk away there. she's at the san francisco rock 'n' roll marathon this morning. it is currently underway. you just saw her ktvu's katie utehs will have more on the road closures you can expect if you're head the to the city this morning. it is mornings on 2. sunday april 6th. i'm brian flores. >> and i'm allie rasmus. >> mike and claudine have the day off today. >> good morning to you. a good looking day. take a look at this beautiful shot looking towards the east. the official sunrise, 10, 12 minutes ago, and we have plenty of sunshine in store for today. the ridge of high pressure is going to continue to build, and our temperatures will transition from being seasonal yesterday to well above average for today. you can see from storm tracker 2 we have just a little bit of patchy fog out there this morning, picking up a little bit here in and around santa cruz and just off the coast. we will be mostly sunny for today and temperatures along the coast in the 60s to near 70 degrees. with that said i have an advisory to tell you about coming up in just a moment.

first let's check in on our temperatures. it's a cool start out there, 46 walnut creek. 47 in hayward. 49 in oakland. 44 santa rosa, novato and napa. low 50s san francisco, sfo and into redwood city. mid-40s for half-moon bay. for the afternoon today we've got some nice weather coming our way. 71 expected in san francisco, 73 for hayward, 79 in livermore. we'll be flirting with that 80- degree mark for some areas. upper 60s expected in pacifica. with that said a beach advisory for today. rip currents and sneaker waves will be a possibility. if you're going to be hanging out there, something to consider while you're playing on the beach. when i come back, i'll continue to show you what is going on out there. dry weather and the warming trend, with temperatures reaching into the low 80s eventually. i'll show you when coming up. all right rosemary. we are following developing news in richmond this morning where police are responding to a deadly crash. it happened around 5 this

morning after a driver lost control on richmond parkway. police are investigating the cause of the crash. we'll bring you more on this developing story as soon as we get more information. happening now, nearly 11,000 people are rocking and rolling their way through the streets of san francisco. ktvu channel 2 reporter katie utehs live at the starring line, and she tells us the energy at the transamerica rock 'n' roll half marathon is contagious. >> reporter: it was a festive start to this race. they're very efficient. they're already taking down the start line. runners are headed now towards the golden gate bridge. it's going to be a scenic beautiful run this morning. let me show you the start of the race. >> reporter: some of the advice that was given to the 11,000

runners, don't race until you get to the bridge. that's because in this route there are 1,000 feet of climbing involved, and 800 feet in the first # 40 miles. there were a lot of excited folks out here. we did speak with someone who was not happy with the event. >> at 6:00 this morning we were assaulted by a large sound of rock 'n' roll marathon with no notification. no prior, you know, information that this was going to happen to us this morning. >> as those runners snake their way through the city, they will finish at civic center plaza. there's some 13 bands set up along the course, so it is going to be very festive route. it is the first time that a race has finished at civic center plaza since 1987. so many folks very excited about this event. as you heard, there are some that felt they were not notified properly.

back out here live, you can see there's still some strag letters starting their run. we are going to change locations and for our next live shot you can see us at civic center plaza. we'll show you the festivities and excitement being set up there. might be a good day to check it out. live in san francisco, katie utehs channel 2 news. we have new information on a rescue mission at sea. a navy ship has reached a san diego family stranded a thousand miles off the coast of mexico with a sick baby on board. eric and charlotte kauffman and their two children set sail last month for a trip around the world, but their 1-year-old daughter got sick, and their boat lost power. this past thursday a 4-person crew from the california air national guard parachuted in to help them. at some point the family may be taken off the navy ship by helicopter depending on how the little girl is doing. >> the main issues, especially with children is they do really

well for a long time and they crash. that's what we're worried about. we're constantly monitoring every 15, 20 minutes we're watching to make sure that things stay stable. >> the family is said to be in good spirits and right now the girl is stable. a navy ship is expected to take them to shore sometime this morning. time now 7:05. the national weather service is warning abalone divers and beachgoers to use caution along the coast. a storm off the pacific coast is expected to create fast, long period swells. those swells increase the threat of sneaker waves and rip currents which increases the risk of swimmers being pulled out to sea. beachgoers should be especially careful on beaches that face west or northwest. new this morning, fairfield police are investigating a shooting at a house party that injured four teenagers. it happened at 10:30 last night on camelia and or kid and orchid streets. a group of teenagers started

arguing and then a fight broke out and someone started shooting. >> there was a little confrontation. one thing led to another. people were talking about guns. >> people were like running out of the house. i have a little cousin here so i went to see if she was okay. next thing you know we heard like gunshots and people screaming. >> police say three of the victims are listed in stable condition. a fourth victim was originally listed in critical condition but police say their condition has stabilized. police have not said if any arrests have been made. police in modell in modesto are investigating a stabbing at a slumber party. a 13-year-old girl stabbed her 11-year-old sister and her friend and turned the knife on herself. the girl suspected of the stabbing is in serious but stable condition. >> my understanding is they heard a scream, mom heard a scream and went to check on them. and that's when they found the victims and called the police immediately. >> neighbors say the girl may have special needs.

investigators won't confirm that, but they did say they're not sure if she will face any charges. an overnight chase in richmond ended with a crash. it happened around 1:15 this morning on androtte avenue and 28th street when police spotted a stolen car. the driver took off leading officers on a short chase before the driver jumped out of the car. the car rolled and hit a parked vehicle. two passengers in the speeding car were detained. eight people are now safe after being rescued when their boat caught fire near timer ron. the coast guard received the call about smoke just before 1 yesterday afternoon. the five adults and three children were told to put on life jackets and jump into the water to escape the fire. >> before they went in the water, they were able to fire safety flares and get the attention of a neighboring body. the neighboring boat came over and picked them up. they were only in the water a short period of time. so they were cold but not

hypothermic. >> rescuers wrapped them in blankets. no one was hurt. search and rescue teams will be out missing for a dc volusiaing for a missing hiker. magdalena glynn cost key. her car was later found in that location. anyone with information should call the marin county sheriff's department or bay area crime stoppers. uc berkeley will hold another clinic for people to get vaccinated against the measles after a second student was diagnosed with the disease. the clinic will be held from 10 this morning until 1 this afternoon on campus. the student may have exposed b.a.r.t. riders as well as other students. health officials say the student rode b.a.r.t. from oakland to berkeley on march 30th after returning from a trip. the student also attended class from april 1st to april 3rd. health officials say the current case is unrelated to another case back in february. a high school student in west sonoma county is

recovering from a case of whooping cough. parents and students were notified on friday. the school district's superintendent says the students case was not serious. according to the press democrat, the teen had been vaccinated against the disease. according to a recent study, california saw a rise in whooping cough cases in 2013, mostly because of parents refusing to vaccinate their children. 83% of whooping cough patients last year were kids. in february health officials confirmed the state's first death from whooping cough since the 2010 epidemic. the price to park in downtown walnut creek is about to go up. starting tomorrow the rates at most meters will double from a dollar an hour to $2. parking will be enforced seven days a week. meter hours will be enforced from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. for the first two weeks drivers will be issued warnings, and the goal is to get more people in the city to park in city garages. the city's offering free parking at garages for the first hour, special $25 monthly

parking passes for city garages are also available. the sanford women's basketball team has a tough challenge ahead when they take on defending champion uconn today. the huskies have won all 38 of their games this year including a blowout of sanford very early in the season all the way back in november. since then stanford lost only two other times. they know it's going to be a tough game. they say they are prepared for the challenge though. >> it's a basketball game. just take it smart, know our game plan and be confident and play together. that's all i'm thinking about right now. >> this is the stanford women's sixth final four in seven years. tipoff is at 5:30 tonight. in the men's final four kentucky fans were brought to their feet after a big thriller there. >> oh, aaron harrison beyond belief! >> and the crowd goes nuts there. aaron harrison hit a 3-pointer with 5.7 second left to play after taking a pass from his

twin brother andrew. kentucky went on to beat wisconsin 74-73 and will advance to the national championship game. kentucky is looking for its second national title in three years, and its ninth in school history. following the game, thousands of fans took to the street of lexicon kentucky to celebrate. police lined the streets as fans hung from trees and started small fires as you see. firefighters had to put out more than 60 fires. 30 people had to be treated for various injuries. >> a massive crowd out there. it was a really exciting game. >> oh, yeah. paying more to commute to san francisco, the big change for drivers who use the golden gate bridge starting tomorrow and why it could put a dent in your wallet. >> and a recall involving thousands of mazda vehicles. the insect problem that could be putting drivers at risk. >> it's a mostly sunny start to the day but it's a chilly start to the day. i do expect a fairy rapid rebound as we soar well above average for the afternoon.

grant oh lord to all who are bereaved. >> the first victims of last month's deadly landslide in washington state are now being laid to rest. they include linda macpherson who grew up in darrington and was the town's librarian for 28 years. friends and family say her memory lives on with out lives that she touched. >> she is now with god, and although she lived who went before her, her spirit lives in our hearts and resides in the river valley and mountains she called home and loved. >> 30 people were killed in the disaster. 13 people still remain missing. chinese search crews say they have discovered a pulse

signal and some white floating objects that could belong to missing malaysia flight 370. malaysian authorities say they are still trying to verify these reports. two naval ships be w high- technology equipment are being sent to the area. those ships will try to confirm if the signal is in fact coming from flight 370's black boxes. >> this is an important and encouraging lead but one which i urge you to continue to treat carefully. >> 12 military and civilian planes and 13 ships will take part in today's search efforts. search crews will focus on three areas which total more than 83,000 square miles. time now is 7:16 and a new warning for parents about e- cigarettes as it prompts a surgeon calls to poison control centers around the country. how the devices are enticing for kids. >> oscar molina learned the hard they e-cigarettes and children are a bad combination. >> it's pretty colors.

>> after getting an e-cigarette as a christmas gift both his 5- year-old daughter and 10-year- old son gave it a try without his permission. >> i don't know. it just looked cool. i liked the colors on it, buttons. >> his son posted a video of hills using the device which was purple with a cherry flavored liquid. >> it became a concern because i can't leave that thing laying around or somebody put something that's not vapor or harmless and i don't know, so i got rid of the thing. >> molina says luckily the e- cigarette did not contain nicotine and the kids were okay. an increasing number of children are accidentally ingesting, inhaling or touching liquid nicotine. new numbers from the cdc show in september of 2010, poison centers across the country got one call per month about e- cigarettes. fast forward to february of 2014, that number skyrocketed to 215 calls. more than half were about young children under five.

here in california. poison control report from january of 2013 to february of 2014 they handled 147 calls about e cigarettes. experts say part of the problem is that e-cigarettes are not required to be child proof and often come in bright colors and fruit flavors. >> i can remember a 2-year-old finding an e-cigarette that had slipped between the cushion of a couch and was found kind of sucking on the end. >> that was cara liu reporting. symptoms can include vomiting and seizures. poison control says as little as one gulp could be fatal to a child or adult. spiders are forcing mazda to recall tens of thousands of cars. mazda says it is recalling 42,000 mazda 6 cars because spiders can weave a web in a vent hose. the recall involves cars from the 2010 to 2012 model years

ridge of high pressure that will keep us high and dry for the next couple of days. today we're going to be warmer than yesterday. i'm talking by 5, even 10 degrees. a notable warmup coming our way for the afternoon. this morning many of us a few degrees warmer than where we started yesterday. santa rosa in napa a chilly start for you. warmer than yesterday and for the afternoon we're actually looking at temperatures again in the 70s. i think by the lunch hour we are going to see -- i want to go to concord where we are going to see temperatures well into the low 70s for some. here is a look at what you can expect for concord. as we get into the 10:00 hour already in the 60s. by lunchtime 70 degrees. into the 1:00, 72. going to 77 by 4:00 and into the evening hours still holding on to 70 degrees at 7:00, so if you're thinking about maybe eating outdoors, it's going to be mild all the way into the evening hours with sunsetting at about 7:36. it's a great day for a ball game. i will suggest the sunblock for

minutes. the first blast happened just after 6 p.m. local time. no injuries have been reported. the volcano is said to have been active since 1999. eruptions have occurred sporadically in the past 15 years. a historic lodge in golden gate park is in need of earthquake updates. rec and park staffers say the city isn't planning to do anything about it. the mcclaireen lodge was built in 1896. it's used by the entire recreation and parks department in san francisco. despite withstanding the 1906 and 1989 earthquake the next big quake could destroy the building. the san francisco examiner says the city plans to focus on other projects instead. there is growing excitement for fans of ben and jerry's ice cream in two days it will be free cone day. on tuesday ice cream fans are invited to come and grab the scoop of their choice between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. ice cream creators ben and jerry say it's their way of saying thank you to the people who enjoy their many flavors. the company has held a free

help them. at some point the family may be taken off the navy ship by helicopter depending on how the little girl is doing. police are investigating after a woman's body was found near lake merritt. it happened around 7 yesterday morning near the smith recreation center at park boulevard and 3rd. a bicyclist called police and said the woman appears to have suffered some head trauma. police are investigating the case as a homicide and have not made any arrests. we're learning more about the victim of a fatal pedestrian accident this weekend. the 98-year-old man who was killed while walking in berkeley is a well-known bay area psychologist and professor. police say joseph luft was crossing the intersection of bancroft way and sacramento street friday night when he was hit. he was a professor at stanford. the driver involved in that accident is cooperating with the police investigation. five people were ejected and one person died in a rollover crash nava cavill in

vacaville. one person was pronounced dead at the scene. several other passengers were airlifted to the hospital. alcohol may have been a factor in that crash. east bay police are investigating a pair of robberies that they say could be related. both happened on friday night. one was an armed robbery. the other an attempted robbery. police say a woman was leaving corners tavern in downtown walnut creek when a man with a gun demanded she give him her purse. he grabbed it from her, hopped into a red honda accord. >> i work in downtown walnut creek at a bar, we tell people safe numbers don't walk to your car by yourself. >> about 10 minutes earlier there was an attempted robbery inside a parking structure across the street from the movie theater in pleasant hill. the victims in that case say the suspect also got away in a red honda accord. police say none of the victims were hurt. san leandro police are investigating an armed robbery

where the victim fought back. it happened on friday night at 7-eleven store on east 14th 14th street. police say a masked man entered the store and held one of the clerks at gunpoint. the clerk says the robber was waving the gun around as he demanded cash from the register. the clerk says he then made a split second decision and then grabbed the gun from the robber. >> some people say hero, some people say brave. others say stupid. it's a little bit of both, of all three actually. i don't know if it was the right thing but got a 2001 off the street. >> police say they later found out the gun was not loaded. investigators are now using store surveillance to try and track down that suspect. san leandro police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. time now is 7:36. close to 200 guns are now off the streets of san francisco. they were collected this weekend during a gun buyback event and n visitation valley. police accepted handguns, rifles and assault rifles with no questions asked. attendees were paid up to $100

per gun and $200 for every assault rifle. law enforcement agencies across the bay area will have extra patrols this month looking for drivers who are calling and texts behind the wheel. >> we've all seen the studies that it's pretty dangerous. nobody should do it and almost everybody does. >> this week there was a crash in newark involving a distracted driver. the chp says a driver was looking at her cell phone just before she lost control and rolled over. >> using these devices while you're driving takes your eye off the ball and creates risk not only for yourself but for other people. >> a national campaign called you drive, you text, you pay is set to hit the air waves and social media this week. april is distracted driving awareness month. if you use the golden gate bridge to get in and out of san francisco get ready to pay more to cross it. starting tomorrow the toll is going up. the current tolls of $5 with

fast track and 6 without go up by a dollar tomorrow. after that tolls will go up $0.25 a year between 2015 and 2018. some drivers think that's too much. >> as a college student we're already kind i of -- our means for book prices and everything, it gets hard to pay tuition and then have to pay for bridge tolls as well. >> the toll hikes will bring in $138 million and that's supposed to help erase a projected $142 million deficit over five years. it may seem like traffic keeps getting worse in downtown san francisco, but studies show there's actually fewer cars on the road. the san francisco county transportation authority reports travel speeds on major city streets like market increase by 5% during the morning commute from 2011 to 2013. average speed increased 3% during the evening commute as well. that's because more people are walking and biking or even

undocumented immigrants. protesters were cited and released at the scene. close to two dozen protesters were also arrested in san francisco for blocking traffic at sutter and montgomery streets in the financial district. people in san jose are forming several neighborhood groups to help clean up trash and debris from a growing number of homeless encamp. s. santa clara county's homeless population is the fifth largest in the nation with the highest number of homeless veterans. a volunteer group formed to address the problems says it has hauled 50-tons of trash from creek banks and bridges in the past year. more than $1.6 million of the city's budget was set aside to pay for cleaning them up. a second golden state warriors coach in the last two weeks has been demoted or fired. assistant coach darren irvin was let go for what the team is describing as a violation of company policy. this does not appear to be related to the recent demotion of brian scalabrini. the timing timing is obviously

region. the navy is launching a $100 million program to use drones to supply troops and rescue wounded soldiers. the wall street journal reports unmanned aircraft could one day be capable of helping soldiers carry out night raids, search oceans and select targets for attack. the navy has tested the program at the marine corps base. the drones could help the pentagon deal with budget cuts and cut the risk of casualties. inner city teams from san francisco say they're looking at life differently after returning home from a trip to west africa. the team spent nine days in ghana. the trip was part of a program called operation genesis. san francisco police officer jason johnson says he started the program to help local teens understand the sacrifices made by their african ancestors. >> it was a real life changing thing. it humbled me a little bit. we think we have it bad. we complain about, they have it worse over there and they're happy about it. >> the group also met with

county looking a lot cleaner this morning. organizers say more than 600 people came out yesterday for the 2014 spring cleanup. in the past the event had to be canceled because of high water levels, but this year's drought allowed organizers to continue the event as planned. organizers estimate more than 10,000 pounds of trash and debris were removed along a 23- mile stretch of the river. salmon fishing season is underway and that means boat strikes could pose a risk to sea otters in monterey bay. boaters and fishermen are being asked to obey speed limits especially in areas with a high population of of the tores. 35 endangered otters have been killed by boat strikes in the past decade. salmon fishing season ends april 30th. the murder trial of oscar pistorius resumes tomorrow after a week long delay. pistorius is expected to take the stand for the first time in his trial this week. the case was postponed due to the illness of a court official. he's charged with murder in the

shooting death of his girlfriend last year. pistorius says he thought he was shooting an intruder. a makeover is in store for the former steel scape facility in richmond. a sacramento developer is working on a plan to build 700,000 square feet of new industrial space in that location. tomorrow morning there will be a news conference at the council chamber to provide information about the development. construction is set to begin sometime next year. a community near sacramento is coming together to help build a disabled vet a new home. yesterday the group broke ground at a spot in loomis where they would be building a new home for joshua hoterling. he lost both legs after stepping on an ied in afghanistan. he said he's taken aback by the kindness from this group of strangers. >> none of the guys have met me before. they're taking their saturday out to help a fellow veteran. it's extremely touching. >> the home will be built to accommodate his disabilities. a group called homes for our

good morning. >> reporter: good morning brian. those runners are faster than we are this morning. in the time it took us to move from the great highway to the civic center, the men's finisher we just barely caught him. the women's finisher just came across the finish line. her name is eleanor and she is from san francisco and she finished in i would say an hour 20. chris mocco is the men's winner. he's also from san francisco. he finished in 70 minutes and this is actually his second win. here's what he had to say about the course. >> beautiful morning, the hills man, the hills. i'm never doing that again. i need flat ground. my body wasn't meant for that. it's a really really challenging course but it's gorgeous so it went by very quickly. >> reporter: and our number 2 female just came across the finish line. she is one of 11,000 runners. they took off as we said from the great highway this morning around 6:30. the course goes over the golden gate bridge and back again, so it is absolutely beautiful

scenic route. they come through the marina, back here to the civic center plaza. there are 13 bands along the way. it is an absolute party out here and a little bit of girl power for you. a fun fact. about 60% of these runners are women. so get your running shoes on. head out. you can cheer these runners on and maybe sign up even for next year. live in san francisco, katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. we have new information on a rescue mission at sea. a navy ship has reached a san diego family stranded a thousand miles off the coast of mexico with a sick baby on board. eric and charlotte kauffman and their two children set sail last month for a trip around the world. but their 1-year-old daughter got sick and their boat lost power. this past thursday a 4-person crew from the california air national guard based at moffett field in mountain view parachuted in to help them. at some point the family may be taken off the navy ship by helicopter depending on how the little girl is doing. >> the main issues, especially

with children is they do really well for a long time and they crash. that's what we're worried about. we're constantly monitoring all the time, every 15, 20 minutes we're watching to make sure things stay stable. >> the family is said to be in good spirits and right now the girl is stable. a navy ship is expected to take them to shore sometime this morning. we're also following developing news in richmond where police are responding to a deadly crash. it happened around 5 this morning after the driver lost control on richmond parkway. this is the wrong video there. we apologize. police are investigating the cause of the crash. we'll obviously bring you more information on this developing story as soon as we get it. meantime, the national weather service is warning abalone divers and other beachgoers to use caution along the coast. a storm off the pacific coast is expected to create fast long period swells. they say those swells increase the threat of sneaker waves and rip currents which then increases the risk of swimmers being pulled out to sea. meteorologists say beachgoers should be especially careful on

beaches that face west and northwest. new this morning, fairfield police are investigating a the shaking at a house -- a shooting at a house party that injured four teenagers. that happened last night on camelia and or orchid streets. a group of teenagers at the party started arguing and then a big fight broke out and someone started shooting. >> there was a little confrontation. one thing led to another. people were talking about guns. >> people were like running out of the house. i had a little cousin here so i went to see if she was okay, and next thing you know we heard like gunshots and then people screaming. >> police say three of the victims are listed in stable condition. the fourth victim was originally listed in critical condition but police say their condition has stabilized. police haven't said if any arrests have been made. police in modesto are investigating a stabbing at a girl's slum slumber party. a 13-year-old girl stabbed her 11-year-old sister and then a 13-year-old friend early yesterday morning before

turning the knife on herself. two of the girls are in critical condition and the girl suspected of the stabbing is in serious but stable condition. >> my i understanding is they heard a scream, mom heard a scream. went to check on them, and that's when they found the victims and called the police immediately. >> neighbors say the girl may have special needs. investigates would not confirm that, but they did say they're not sure if she will face any charges. an overnight chase in richmond ended with a crash. had happened around 1:15 this morning when police spotted a stolen car. the driver took off leading officers on a short chase before jumping out of the car. the car rolled and hit a parked vehicle. two passengers in that speeding car were detained. the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. eight people are now safe after being rescued when their boat caught fire near fibberon the. they received a call about smoke. the five adults and three children on board were told to

put on life jackets and jump into the water to escape the fire. >> before they went in the water they were able to fire safety flares and get the attention of a neighboring boat. the neighboring boat came over and picked them up. they were only in the water for a short period of time. they were cold but not hypothermic yet. >> rescuers wrapped them in blankets and they were taken back to the marina in san rafael. no one was hurt. search and rescue teams will be out looking for a missing hiker. magdalena glinkoski was last seen, they captured footage of her. she was in her -- her car was later found in that location. anyone with information on her whereabouts should call the marin county sheriff's department or bay area crime stoppers. today u. c. berkeley will hold another clinic for people to get vaccinated against the measles after a second student was diagnosed with the disease. the clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the tang center on campus.

the student may have exposed b.a.r.t. riders as well and other students. health officials say the student rode b.a.r.t. from oakland to berkeley on march 30th after returning from a trip. the student also attended class from april 1st to the 3rd. health officials say the current case is unrelated to another case back in february. the price to park in downtown walnut creek is about to go up. starting tomorrow the rates at most meters will double from a dollar an hour to $2. parking will also be enforced seven days a week meaning sundays are no longer free. meter hours will be enforced from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. for the first two weeks drivers will be issued warnings. the goal is to get more people to park in city garages. the city's offering free parking at garages for the first hour. special $25 monthly parking passes for city garages are also available. the stanford women's basketball team has a tough challenge ahead when they take on defending champion uconn today. the huskies have won all 38 of their games this year including a blowout of stanford very

2. 8:24. a high school teacher in santa monica is on leave after an altercation with a student. several other students recorded friday's incident on their cell phones. it shows science teacher and wrestling coach mark black and a student whose face has been blurred out. witnesses say it started when the student was caught selling drugs in class. the school district is now investigating. one board member says letters sent to the board have overwhelmingly supported the teacher's actions. and a facebook page created in support of black now has more than 6,000 likes. students in dozens of states started common core testing in week, but students are opting out in record numbers and that could affect the quality of the data the government hopes to collect about the new curriculum. some parents say the tests are causing unnecessary stress and anxiety for students ask are taking power away from local districts and teachers. students at dover elementary school in san pablo were among the first to take the tests. >> we have as parents

roll half marathon. ktvu channel 2 reporter katie utehs is live at the finish line to tell us the energy level there is intense. you've been there all morning, what's going on? >> reporter: good morning. it's quite loud out here. i struggled to hear you a little bit. it is so exciting to see these people come across the finish line, many of them with their hands raised. they are pumped to have completed this, and the winners of both races, the men's and the women's are from san francisco so a lot of hometown pride here. they boat won last career as well. let me show you the men's finish. [ cheers and applause ] >> that was chris macca crossing the finish line with a limbo. so he finished with in style with about 70 minutes was his run time. the race started around 6:30 this morning from the great highway. it was a gorgeous view of the ocean. the runners went over golden gate bridge and finished here

diego family stranded a thousand miles off the coast of mexico with a sick baby on board. >> eric and charlotte kauffman and their two children set sail last month for a trip around the world, but their 1-year-old daughter got sick and the boat lost power. this past thursday a four- person crew from the california air national guard based at moffett field in mountain view parachuted in to help them. at some point the family may be taken off the navy ship by helicopter depending on how the little girl is doing. oakland police are investigating after a woman's body was found near lake merritt. it happened yesterday morning near the smith recreation center at park boulevard and 3rd avenue. a cyclist called police and says it appears the woman suffered some head trauma. police are investigating the case as a homicide and have not made any arrests. we're learning more about the victim of a deadly pedestrian accident this weekend. 98-year-old man is a well-known bay area psychologist and

professor. joseph luft was crossing the intersection of bancroft way in sacramento street friday night when he was center struck. luft taught at san francisco state university for more than 20 years and was a professor at stanford. the driver is cooperating with the police investigation. five people were ejected and one person died in a rollover crash in vacaville. it happened when a pickup lost control on pleasant valley road and chester way. one person was pronounced dead at the scene. several other passengers were airlifted to the hospital. police say alcohol may have been a factor in that crash. time now is 8:35, an east bay police are investigating a pair of robberies they say could be related. both happened on friday night. one was an armed robbery. the other an attempted robbery. police say a woman was leaving corners tavern in downtown walnut creek when a man with a gun demanded she give him per her purse. he grabbed it from her and hopped into a red honda accord where the getaway driver was ready to speak off. >> i actually work in downtown walnut creek at a bar.

we always tell people safety in numbers. don't walk to your car by yourself. be vigilant. head on a swivel. >> about 10 minutes earlier police say there was an attempted robbery inside a parking structure across the street from the movie theater in pleasant hill. the victims in that case say the suspects also got away in a red honda accord. police say none of the victims were hurt. san leandro police are investigating an armed robbery where the victim fought back. it happened on friday night at the 7-eleven store on east 14 14th street. police say a masked man entered the store and held one of the clerks at gunpoint. the clerk says the robber was waving the gun around as he demanded cash from the register. the clerk then says he then made a split second decision and grabbed the gun from the robber. >> some people say hero. some people say brave. others say stupid. it's a little bit of both of all three actually. i don't know if it was the right thing, but got a gun off

the street. >> they later found out the gun was not loaded. investigators are using store surveillance to try and track down that suspect. san leandro police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. close to 200 guns are now off the streets of san francisco. they were collected this weekend during a gun buyback event and visitation valley. police accepted handguns, rifles and assault rifles with no questions asked. attendees were paid up to $100 per gun and $200 for every assault rifle. law enforcement agencies across the bay area will have extra patrols this month looking for drivers who are calling and texting behind the wheel. >> we've all seen the studies that it's pretty dangerous. i mean nobody should do it and almost everybody does. >> there was crash last week in newark involving a distracted driver. the chp said a driver was looking at her phone just before she lost control and rolled over. >> using these devices while you're driving takes your eye off the ball and creates risk not only for yourself but for other people.

>> a national campaign called you drive, you text, you pay, is set to hit the air waves and social media this week. april is distracted driving awareness month. if you use the golden gate bridge to get in and out of san francisco get ready to pay more to cross it. starting tomorrow the toll is going up. the current tolls of $5 with fast track and $6 without, both go up by a dollar tomorrow. after that tolls will go up $0.25 a year between 2015 and 2018. some drivers think that's too much. >> we're already kind out of means for book prices and everything. it gets hard to have to pay tuition and book prices prices and then have to pay for increasing bridge tolls as well. >> the bridge district says the toll hikes will bring in $138 million to help erase a projected $142 million deficit over five years. it may seem like traffic keeps getting worse in downtown san francisco, but studies show there's actually fewer cars on

the road. the san francisco county transportation authority reports travel speeds on major city streets like market increased by 5% during the morning commute from 2011 to 2013. average speed increased 3% during the evening commute as well. officials say that's because more people are walking and biking or taking mass transit. a texas based startup is recruiting talent for its new san francisco office at shuttle bus stops in the city. the san francisco chronicle reports big commerce has been offering poached egg sandwiches as a gimmick to poach employees from other tech companies. the tactic appears to be working. the company says it has spoken to more than a thousand potential candidates and has extended offers to about six of them. caltrain is using a popular web site to reach out to people and address safety concerns. the transit agency held an and me anything session on ready this past week. it was organized after that video of a man's close call of a passion train was posted on

youtube. caltrain officials say safety is one of the agency's biggest responsibilities. a dozen protesters calling for immigration reform have been cited after blocking an intersection in san jose. it happened yesterday as part of a national day of demonstrations against deportations of undocumented immigrants. protesters were cited and released at the scene. close to two dozen protesters were arrested in san francisco for blocking traffic on montgomery streets in the financial district. people in san jose are forming several neighborhood groups to help clean up trash and debris from a growing number of homeless encamp. s. santa clara's homeless population is the fifth largest in the nation with the highest number of homeless veteran. a volunteer group formed to address the problem says it has hauled 50-tons of trash from creek banks and bridges in the past 12 months. $1.6 million of the city's budget was set aside to pay for it. friday night's postponement

welcome back to mornings on 2. time now is 8:44. president obama plans to attend a memorial service this wednesday for the victims of last week's deadly shooting rampage at fort hood texas. investigators say 34-year-old army specialist ivan lopez killed three soldiers and wounded 16 otherrings before killing himself. the three men killed were all experienced soldiers who served in iraq and afghanistan. one of the victims sergeant danny ferguson is being remembered as a hero for standing in front of a door to keep the gunman out. >> he held that door shot. there's no lock. if he was not being the one against that door holding it, that shooter would have been able to get through and shoot everyone else. >> sergeants timothy owens and carlos rodriguez were also killed. owens had just signed up for another six years with the army

official. pistorius is charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend last year. pistorius says he thought he was shooting an intruder in his home. the driver of a train that derailed at chicago's o'hare international airport has been fired. brittany haywood admitted to falling asleep at the controls before the crash last month. the train went off the tracks and up an escalator injuring 32 people. transit officials say it was haywood's second serious safety violation in less than 90 days. chuck hagel says the u.s. will send two ballistic missile defense destroyers to japan by 2017. it's part of an effort to counter missile threats from north korea. the two destroyers would be in addition to the five other u.s. missile defense warships also stationed in japan. >> in response to pinyang's pattern of provocative and destabilizing actions including recent missile launches in violation of un security council resolutions, i can announced to that the united states is planning to forward

at life differently after returning home from a trip to west africa. they spent nine days in ghana. the trip was part of a program called operation genesis. jason johnson says he started the program to help local teens understand the sacrifices made by their african ancestors. >> it was a real life changing thing. it humbled me a little bit. we think we have it bad. they have it worse out there and they happy about it. >> the group also met with other young people there to talk about the difference between life in the city's bay view district and life in west africa. some inmates from san mateo county are graduating and it's causing quite a few tails to wag. >> if i can transform some guys that had no knowledge about how to be kind to an ann animals or never had the opportunity, that is the best part of my job. >> the graduation ceremony marks the success of a program called tails. it gives inmates the opportunity to work with dogs from the peninsula humane society. for eight weeks they try to train the dogs who have social

problems and other issues that prevent them from being adopted. >> i learned that i really have a connection with the dogs and i'm glad i was able to participate in a program like this. you know, it's a big difference from where i came from. >> throughout the eight-week period, inmate handlers are with their dogs 24/7. they are responsible for the dog's exercise, socialization, grooming and house training. once a week they take part in an hour-long class to monitor progress. a community near sacramento is coming together to help build a disabled vet a new home. yesterday the group broke ground at a into the in loomis where they will be building a new home for joshua hoteling. he lost both legs after stepping on an ied in afghanistan. >> none of these guys have met me before. they're taking their saturday out just to help a fellow veteran. it's extremely touching. >> the home will be built to accommodate his disabilities. a group called homes for our troops provided all the funds necessary to complete the

twice yesterday, and each eruption lasted nearly five minutes. the first blast happened just after 6:00 p.m. local time. the volcano is said to have been active since 1999 and eruptions have occurred sporadically for the past 15 years. two people were stabbed after riots near u.c. santa barbara. hundreds of police officers were called in to break up the huge crowds last night after a major gathering to celebrate the school's spring quarter. at least five officers were hurt, including one hit with a brick and two hit with bottles. police say street signs were torn down, small fires were set and one fire was vandalized. >> a high-school teacher in santa monica is on leave after an altercation with a student. several other students recorded tint on their cell phones. you are looking at it here. it shows the wrestling coach

case as a homicide and have not made any arrests. we're learning more about the victim of a deadly pedestrian accident. the 98-year-old is a bay area professor. police say he was crossing the street friday night when he was struck. he taught for more than 20 years and was a professor at stanford. the driver is cooperating with the police investigation. meanwhile in vacaville five people were eject and one person died in rollover crash last night. it happened when a pickup lost control on pleasant valley road and chester way. one person was pronounced dead at the scene. several other passengers were airlifted to the hospital. police say alcohol may have been a factor in that crash. time now 9:35. east bay police are investigating a pair of robberies that they say could be related. both happened on friday night. one was an armed robbery, the other an attempted robbery. police say a woman was leaving corner's tavern in down town

welcome back to mornings on 2. time now 9:44. a new qarning for parents about e-cigarettes as it prompts a surgeon's call to poison control centers around the country. how the devices are enticing to kids. >> reporter: oscar molina learned the hard way that e- cigarettes and children arrest bad combination. after getting an e-cigarette as claims gift both his five-year- old daughter and 10-year-old son gave at try without his permission. >> i don't know, it just looked cool. i liked the colors, the buttons. >> reporter: his son even posted a video of himself using the days, which was purple with a cherry flavored liquid.
