and it's getting a little bit more crowded. the metering lights are on. this is a 30 minute drive time into san francisco. you will be waiting at the toll plaza for more than half of that drive time. also looking at the commute here on the peninsula as we move in mere. it looks good to the airport in case you are catching a flight. for the most part the peninsula traffic looks good as you come up to the san mateo bridge and get up to the san mateo freeway. let's go back to the desk. we are following developing news. police are searching for the person who shot a man over night just down the street from samuel elementary school. police are out there. these are live pictures you are looking at. they are collecting evidence on snow drive in south san jose. this is two blocks from samuel sometime elementary school. police are going door to door.

they are asking neighbors what they saw and heard. neighbors called police. they heard shots fired. firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire at this business complex. it happened at 3:00 this afternoon on old bay shore highway. firefighters say several businesses are in this complex but it looks like the fire started in the back of a landscaping business. there were workers in the building where the fire started but they were not seriously hurt. new this morning an unusual crime in san francisco targeting those super compact smart carps. ktvu tara moriarty has been following the story since we

first learned about it at 1:30 this morning. tara. >> reporter: you know police have interviewed add least one witness that we know of. we are here in the portola heights neighborhood where we hope police are trying to gather surveillance video. this is a car similar to the one that was vandalized. it was the third time they they struck in the city. the video may look funny but the car owner is not laughing. this started around 1:00 this morning. then about ten minutes later another smart car was found on its side. a couple blocks away. the last occurred around 1:30. a couple minutes away in the portola neighborhood. a witness says he was shocked when he saw a group of a half of dozen people in hooded sweatshirts walk up to his roommates smart car and flip it vertically. >> it seems like it's some sort of organized act against smart cars or just a punch of kids trying to cause havoc.

>> all of the cars have sustained shattered windows and body damage. we talked to a sergeant and an officer this morning. we are only told the incident is under investigation. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:05. we are following new developments in the search for the missing malaysian airlines jet. a u.s. ping locator has twice picked up signals consistent with the sounds given off by the airplanes black boxes. now this is encouraging news but it may take days to confirm that the signals picked up in the southern indian ocean are indeed from flight 370. and they are running out of time. the batteries on the black boxes are only supposed to last 30 days. >> we are already one day past the advertised shelf life. we hope it keeps going for a little bit longer. >> there are also new reports that the plane may have taken a

root around indonesian air space. whoever was piloting the plane may have been trying to avoid radar detection. a marin county home was destroyed by fire. that fire started at 4:30 yesterday morning. now marin county firefighter took this picture of the effort to get the flames under control. three other homes were threatened but firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading. now three people were actually asleep in the home when the fire started but they did make it out safely. the cause of that fire still under investigation. general motors will begin repairs today on the more than 2.5 million vehicles at the center of a controversial recall. faulty ignition switches are tied to at least 13 deaths. owners can bring vehicles to a dealer to have those switches replaced. your time is 6:07.

happening today without you believe prices will double to park at a parking meter. alex savidge is out there right now talking to business owners. they say this could mean less customer for them. >> reporter: now you will have to pay twice as much. that means you will bring along extra change. the rate starting today doubles from $1 per hour to $2 per hour. and on top of that meter enforcement hours are also changing. the other big change sundays are no longer free. parking meters will be enforced seven days a week. the first hour of parking will will be free under this

noelani. >> it's a lot. hopefully that will encourage people from coming out. >> the city council approved the parking changes last year and there was an out reach campaign to give drivers a heads up. even though the changes do take effect today, there will be a grace period of sorts for the next two weeks. the city will only issue warnings in the evenings and on sundays to give people a chance. live in walnut creek alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. dozens of registers nurses are planning to picket outside of a clinic. it's right off of interstate 880 and it's expected to be fully open by june.

and it's -- it won't b replaced. time is 6:09. tuition at california universities cannot go up but they will have to pay more money to go to classes. this coming fall 11 of the 23 csu campuses will start charging a student success fee. the money from that fee will go to things like classes and faculty salaries. that will raise the total campus fees at san jose state to almost $2,000 a year. the suspension of leland yee has left his constituents without representation in sacramento. the state senate voted to suspend yee after he was

charged in an fbi avid. the president of the state senate has asked yee to resign so someone else could fill his seat and represent his constituents but yee has refused. his staff members are continuing to respond to questions. time is just about 6:11. another person crossing a san francisco street hit and killed by a car. this is the seventh one this year. the major street that added yet another chapter to its deadly history. next family rescued off the coast of mexico on their way home this morning. the message they have after their baby got very sick and the boat they were on was stranded. >> good morning. right now we are looking at a commute that is definitely busier than it was 30 minutes ago. as we look at the bay bridge the drive time here is 30 minutes. coming up a look at some other drive times around the bay. >> lots of clear skies. won't take long to warm up. but how long will it last and

houses were damaged in that big earthquake. chile's interior minister says government agencies are starletting to distribute food, water, and sanitary supplies. president obama and the first lady they will be going to the memorial service wednesday at fort hood texas. last week ivan lopez shot and killed three soldiers and wounded 16 manufacture before killing himself -- 16 more before killing himself. he got in an argument someone at the human resources. they is also visited fort hood back in 2009 when an army psychiatrist shot and killed 13 people. a ski trip over the weekend turned tragic for the family of a 67-year-old man from southern california. he was killed on a collision on an an advance run at north star ski resort.

it happened around 11:00 yesterday morning. he was air lifted to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. autopsy is planned for today temperature but investigators say he was wearing a helmet. a san diego family is thanking the military for rescuing them and their very sick baby. the rescuers including a team from moffett field worked for several days over the weekend to reach the stranded family. they're finally back on their way home. the kaufman family set sail across the pacific ocean in march and a short time later their baby developed a fever and rash and not responding to medication. >> they are tired. they are resting. but everything is really looking good. it's a great happy ending. >> the family boarded the uss yesterday morning. they are expected to arrive back in san diego sometime later this week. after they boarded the ship, the family released this statement. we are very thankful to be safe

everything. you are right. good morning, to you. let's take a look at what we have now. i would say the commute is getting busier by the moment. you can see highway 4 is slowing down. the drive time is a little bit up but it's still nothing unusual getting up to the concord area. 680 southbound a moderately heavy drive. i want to show you the traffic at the toll plaza year. there are no major problems on the upper deck of the bay bridge. if you are driving on 101 southbound the traffic on the peninsula continues to look pretty good all the way down the peninsula. if we pull back, you can see 101 to the south bay here is look good. let's go to steve. thank you. our weather is looking good if you like sunshine and warm temps. there is a little system out here which will give us a little cool down. i don't think it will make any impact until tuesday night into

traffic on southbound 880 in hayward. let's go back to the desk. i want to talk about that developing news. san jose police searching for suspects in an early morning shooting and it happened not far from an elementary school. janine de la vega is joining us now from the crime scene with new information about the victim. >> reporter: police have this neighborhood still roped off here on snow drive. they have been collecting evidence and taking pictures here for the last couple of hours. there is a silver lexus in the middle of snow drive here. police have focused on that car. and they believe the man that was shot was in that car right before the shooting. at this point officers are trying to figure out why the man was shot. neighbors heard multiple gunshots. when officers arrived they found a black man in his 30s.

he was conscious and breathing but rushed to the hospital. we are told he is in serious condition but stable. >> we are doing our canvas. and so we are talking to residents and also trying to make sure as far as bullets direction of travel that make sure there are not any strays. >> reporter: police are looking for witnesses and trying to figure out if there was some sort of argument going on. officers are trying to get to the bottom of this. this neighborhood is not considered a hot spot where they normally have a lot of problems. it's a few blocks away from samuel stipe elementary school. so far in this case they have not made any arrests. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police are investigating the death of a

man hit by a car while crossing the street. it happened at about 11:00 last night. investigators say a car hit the man while he was crossing the busy intersection. early reports indicate he was not in the crosswalk the driver stopped and is cooperating with police. seven people have been killed while crossing san francisco streets. four of those accidents were on vanness. san francisco police are vowing to reduce the disturbing number of deadly accidents. they are cracking down on speeders, red light runners, and other dangerous drivers. police have written 50% more traffic violations this year than last year. new this morning vandals are targeting smart cars parked along san francisco city streets. tara moriarty is live in the portola neighborhood. why this particular vandalism is so unusual. >> reporter: that sus --

suspects are flipping the cars completely over. this is a look at a smart car. one similar to the ones that were struck. we know one came to rest on its roof, one on its side, and one on its rear wheels. this all started around 1:00 when a smart car was found flipped on its roof. then about ten minutes later another smart car was found on its side a couple blocks away on anderson. the last one occurred around 1:30. a couple minutes away onboarden and sweeney. walk up to his roommates smart car and flip it vertically. >> i thought they looked like they were up to no good and then sure enough they walk up to this smart car right here. all huddle around it and lift it up and sit it on its hind legs. >> reporter: all of the cars sustained shattered windows and

body damage. they have since been towed away. we talked to a sergeant and officer with the san francisco police department this morning but we are told the incident is simply under investigation. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:35. the family of a come missing on mt. tam will meet with investigators. she has been missing for seven days now. last seen in surveillance video paying for parking at a state parking lot. after a couple days rangers noticed her car had not moved. they started searching. it's a rental car and the front seat was filled with groceries. >> there could be a hundred different scenarios played out. >> yesterday more than 100 search and rescue volunteers along with search dogs combed the mountain. they have about 20,000-acres to search. right now it's not clear when the search is expected to

resume. happening today be prepared because the cost of driving over the golden gate bridge is going up $1. that will raise it to $6. but this is just the beginning. the toll will raise. san jose people taking a bold new step to stop police officers from moving away to other cities. mercury news reports the city council is ready to ease disability retirement limits for public safety workers from its signature pension reform. the san jose police union has argued that injured police officers could be left without a job or a pension under the measure b retirement limits that voters approved two years ago. measure b is the main reason police officers keep moving away to other cities. the city council will take up

the issue tomorrow night. tomorrow people who live in the small coastal town decide whether to tax themselves more to pay for their nine person fire department. only about 1,000 people live in bodega bay but on weekends as many as 10,000 tourists descend on that little seaside community and it's those tourists that are being rescued by firefighters. >> they fall off cliffs. they get washed out to sea. >> we are first responders for the county parks and the state parks. and yet we receive no money from either one. >> homeowners will see their fire district tax jump by $200. opponents of that measure say they are basically subsidizing emergency care for out of towners. it's called the most promising lead yet as the urgent search for that missing

a violent car crash in napa county yesterday afternoon took the life of a four-year-old boy. it happened on state highway 121 and state highway 12. a four-year-old boy was killed. his mother was seriously hurt in this. the child and the mother were in an suv. now the chp says the driver 23- year-old flavio crossed the center line. he may have fallen asleep. bay area chef was in the car

time is 6:44. spring break celebration turned violent in southern california. look at this. at least six law enforcement officers and dozens of partiers were hurt. now police tried to control the almost 15,000 people who quickly got out of control. more than 100 people were arrested. the deputies say they have never seen anything like this in 15 years. university says this will all be investigated and the students that participated may be penalized. another fantastic season for the stanford women but it came to a heartbreaking end in the ncaa final four last night. >> condoleezza rice of course the stanford professor there

new this morning a dramatic moment in the murder trial of oscar pistorius. it happened just hours ago in south africa courtroom. >> i would like to take this opportunity to apologize to reeva's family. >> the cameras were not allowed to show pistorius' face as he took the stand his testimony began with that emotional apolly. prosecutors say it was a premeditated killing. pistorius faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted. time is 6:55.

two teenagers were killed in a crash crash over the weekend and we don't know yet if three others were seriously hurt in the crash will survive. this happened saturday afternoon in a rural part of vacaville. the pickup truck was speeding when it went up a curb and out into an open field where it rolled several times. it appears no one had seat belts on. all five were ejected from that truck. police in fairfield investigating a shooting that sent four teen angers to the-- teenagers to the hospital. the fight broke out and someone started shooting. police say all four of the victims are in stable condition. this by the way is the second shooting in that area within a week. back on thursday federal and local police shot and injured two brothers who police say are suspected of drive by

shootings. hollywood mourning the loss of mickey rooney. he played opposite judy garland. his career spanned more than 80 years. he started his career in his parents act while still a toddler and broke into the movies before the age of 10. time is 6:57. it was a bench clearing brawl that broke out at a charity hockey game. sticks and gloves were picked up players were kicked out of the game. the nypd went on to win 8-5.
