is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. three girls all in elementary school targeted and sexually assaulted. now parents are questions why the school didn't do more to warn them. good evening. julie haener is here now for what we are working on for 6:00 p.m. >> parents are calling for better communication from the oakland school district after a string of sexual assault said targeting elementary school students -- alts targeting elementary school students. ktvu's allie rasmus spoke to parents who said they weren't told about the attacks for days. >> police are looking into the possibility the same man may be behind all sexual assaults. this is a sketch of what the suspect might look like. parents think they would have liked to seen this sketch months ago. >> reporter: three sexual assaults involving three different girls at three elementary school. the most recent on march 28 when police say a man lured a

six-year-old away from class and sexually assaulted her in his car. police believe this man may be responsible for all three crimes. the earliest on january 24. she wants to know why it took her two months to find out about the salts from administrators. >> i want to know if it happened once. >> reporter: as a parent she has the right to know when a sexual predator strikes at any school. other parents agree. >> because predator could move around so because, you know, they could move from one school to the next to the next, it is important to let the parents know to be on the look out. >> the school district says the district doesn't have a set policy for notifying parents district wide about a sexual assault involving one of its students. >> in the past part of the problem is we rely too heavily

on administrators at the site tocommunicate the information. >> the district -- to communicate the information. >> the district is looking to change that practice. . >> where there is direct messaging to the parents. . >> the changes need to happen now. >> what is the district going to do to make sure that all of us parents are aware that it is out there. as if it was a case of lice, measles. >> there is a balancing act they have to consider between communicating to everyone and maintaining the victim's privacy. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. we are following developing news in san jose, a house fire destroyed one home and damaged neighboring houses. the fire started and ktvu's robert handa spoke with

firefighters who are working to put out hot spots tonight. >> we were inside the fire area and even though there is still smoke firefighters say the fire is under control and they are right now watching and waiting. making sure the fire is completely out and the gas dissipated. a few hours ago from news chopper 2, the fire department got a call about 3:00 p.m. and they could see flames destroyed one of the homes on moss brook circle and spread to two neighboring homes. the homes are close together. as you can see the frames helped feed the fire. a gas line break accelerated the flames and homes were evacuated to a school. some told us they were alerted by the popping explosion sounds and by their neighbors. >> hollered there is a fire

across the street. i looked up, boom, like it exploded. we were on our way up the street. she grabbed my dog and away we went. >> we have no injuries. to fire personal or civilians and we are standing by waiting for pg&e. gas line break helped cause the fire or did come from the fire? >> i don't have that information. >> reporter: and firefighters are still keeping people out of the area to make sure the gas doesn't collect in pockets that could lead to explosions. it will be hours before they could investigate a possible cause. some neighbors heard work going obbefore the -- on before the fire broke out. we will have updates tonight on the 10:00 p.m. news and updates on twitter, facebook and www.ktvu.com. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a death in the north bay is now a homicide investigation. ktvu's rob roth is where a

man's body found by a hiker has police looking for clues. rob? >> reporter: right, frank, the first homicide this year. a hiker on saturday found a body up here in the preserve. police are saying little about their investigation but they say the community is not at risk. >> reporter: plooeswill only say the victim was a male. they -- police will only say the victim was a male and they have concluded it was no accident. >> they believe it was a homicide based on the evidence at the scene. they believe it was a victim of a homicide. >> police won't say if the victim was targeted or killed at random but they are saying the public is not at risk. >> we don't think this was a individual in the hiking trails where people using the trails are in no immediate danger that we believe.

we believe this was an isolated incident. >> reporter: neighbors will remain cautious till police sort out what happened. >> i was just discussing it with my family and i decided i wouldn't travel alone. i will take friends with me. >> police believe the body was on the trail a day or two before being discovered. reporting live, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. a man charge said with murder in a cold case was denied bail today. she was found astrangled to death in her car at the san jose -- strangled to death in her car at the airport in 1989. prosecutors charged her husband and his brother with her murder for financial gain. they are both behind bars and pleaded not guilty. the brother was denied bail. a former aid for california state senator leland yee will

stay out of jail for now. we caught up with keith jackson this afternoon as he was leaving court. prosecutors wanted to revoke his $250,000 in bail saying he didn't have enough collateral but the judge gave him more time. former san francisco school board president keith jackson was arrested march 26 and charged with soliciting bribes for leland yee. arraignment for leland yee, keith jackson and others are scheduled for tomorrow. jury deliberations began in the trial of a rape suspect accused of terrorizing a condo complies. he is charged with rape and caul four years ago -- and sexual assault four years ago. a prosecutor said it was the worse nightmares of the victims. and he admits he raped one woman and salted another and deny -- sexually assaulted another and denied he was

involved in a third attack. walnut creek is helping people navigate new pricing and parking rules. one of the most popular shopping and dining destinations and starting today it is more expensive for drivers to park there. ktvu's john fowler joins us live with how the city is trying to ease the burden of rates and exendsed hours. >> reporter: right now -- extend hours. >> reporter: right now parking is all the rage. the city says the goal is to make parking easier by increasing the turnover of on street parking. >> finding parking in downtown is difficult. the city today doubled rates, $2 an hour and extended meeters to 8:00 p.m. 7 days a week. >> not happy because i think there -- i understand it is a revenue stream. the city says it is only partly about money. it is to reduce demand for

street parking. garages are 50 cents an hour. >> less circling the block. easier to find a space on the street. as well as parking in the garages where there is plenty of parking. >> for the next two weeks no tickets just warnings after 6:00 p.m. and on sunday and so-called parking ambassadors will distribute information, some business owners say it will keep shoppers away hurting them and the city. >> if they don't spend money they will lose more. >> reporter: hogwash say business people. >> this is not typical of america. how many places have a neiman marcus and a tiffany? >> one city survey showed on weekend parking demands exceed 100%. the city is hoping the rates

will change behavior. john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details now on parking rates around the bay area. san francisco varies by zones. some spots are 25 cents an hour and other places $6 an hour. here is an example, burling anymore, 10 cents an hour, and $1 an hour. and palo alto no charge downtown but the city limits how long you can stay based on color coded zones. new legislation aims to inform cumes bowdacious consumers about flame retardance in perchture. he said there is evidence flame retardance are associated with health problems and officials say they don't provide any fire safety. under the proposal furniture makers would have to disclose

one-year-old baby rescued from a sail boat is responding well to medication. the family sent out a distress call thursday. pictures show members of the international guard as they helped get the family safely aboard a navy warship. they will make it to san diego by wednesday. the search for a missing hiker is growing more urgent. magdalena glinkowski was last seen a week ago sunday on mount tamalpais. a large scale search over the weekend yielded no clues to her aerobats. her parents flew in from the east coast and -- where about. her parents flew in from the east coast and made a plea for help. >> she is a very strong person.

drilling wells and some want restrictions. well drillers say it is the busiest they have been in 30 years. people are trying trying to use ground water because of the drought but they said it could dry up usable water and make the ground sink in some places. >> we are drawing on our savings account in a significant way and causing damage in isolated areas of the state. >> california does not regulate ground water. some people want the state to do that and put meters on wells. nothing but sunshine and blue skies today. it was fantastic out there. ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin is here to tell us about all the nice weather. >> it will get warmer. 5 degrees. 10 degrees warm in some places today than yesterday. highs tomorrow 5 to 10 degrees. look how green it is. the rain helped things out.

anncr: at jennie-o we heard of a place in iowa where every thursday people ride 10 miles for tacos. we thought we'd show up and surprise them with a better kind of taco made with jennie-o ground turkey cooked thoroughly to 165. i feed my kids turkey tacos over regular tacos any day. i think they are light and they are just fresh tasting.
