recently learned that fire investigators may have a tough time determining exactly what happened because of a specific tactic firefighters used to put out the flames. more on that in a couple of minutes. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, you still see fog out there? >> i see a little bit of fog. a lot of reports of that. also a nice twitter picture. we built this city. it's very low. bit there. pacifica half moon bay. el granada reporting fog. earlier this morning from the marina district and richmond we had foghorns. it will still be okay. it will still be nice. mge, upper 60s, loy 70s at bam time. just not as warm as yesterday. today will be cooler. some fog, mainly confined to the coast and very shallow. not making much of a difference except close to the coast. 60s, 70s. there will be warm

temperatures. that fog is way to low. a few high clouds. with that fog there, 40s, 50s, to almost 60. santa rosa, 48. most locations, mid- to upper 50s. it will still be nice. mostly sunny. warm a little bit cooler over by the coast. we'll get a mini summertime pattern. here's sal. all right. we're looking at a commute that so far looks okay in general. we've had some slow traffic out there. we have a big crash in castro valley. but the bay bridge will be front and center today with that home omer at at&t park. we'll see traffic slow all day either coming to or leaving san francisco. right now it's about a 30- minute drive time. after 9:00, it probably won't get better with some people coming in for the home opener. first pitch 1:35. this is 880 in oakland and the traffic in both directions near

the coliseum. looks pretty good northbound and southbound. westbound 580 castro valley sneer stroh bridge there is a -- near stroh bridge there is a crash there. traffic is quickly slowing down coming into castro valley. if you drive through castro valley, give yourself an extra 10, 15 minutes if you can. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. continues coverage this morning of a large fire in san jose that destroyed one home and damaged two others. it began around 3:00 yesterday afternoon on mossbrook circle, not far from westgate mall. about 30 minutes ago, we learned that it might be difficult to determine how the fire started. ktvu channel 2 reporter, janine de la vega, has more on what could hold up the investigation. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. i want to show everyone, some of the damage, now that it's light outside, you can see burned, charred, destroyed

cars. this is where a house used to stand. now it's just a pile of rubble. there is a chimney left standing there. firefighters brought in a bulldozer. that's disrupted a lot of the debris. it makes it difficult for an investigator to look for evidence. the fire was a stubborn one to fight. it began at 3:00 yesterday afternoon. flames shot up in the air about 50 feet. it burned for about around eight hours. the people who lived in the house where this fire started barely had enough time to escape. it destroyed their home and damaged the two neighboring houses. a dozen people were evacuated. the neighborhood is full of ikeler homes. >> these ikelers are susceptible to going up in flames very fast. we all know that. we all tried to do as much as we can to be careful. >> reporter: this morning, most of the people are back at home.

two of the three families are being held by the red cross. they are looking for answers. we know a gas line was damaged and fueled the fire once it started. there was also a lot of wind. an investigator went into the property yesterday. a firefighter told me that an investigator seemed to think that the fire may have started near an electrical box. but that was just preliminary. it's unclear if any investigator will come back out today. still, no definitive cause of this fire. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thanks, janine. more details on the types of homes that caught fire. they are called ikeler homes. they can be found all over northern california and in parts of southern california. the homes are designed to bring the outside in with a lot of windows and open space. but firefighters say that type of floor plan actually helps fuel the flames. they say the homes create a draft effect that sucks air up and through the house.

people who live in the homes say they were aware of the increased fire damage. the homes are known as seven- minute eichlers because of how fast they burn. they can be found in san rafael, san mateo, mountain view, walnut creek, oakland and san jose. 7:07. the woman found beaten to death by lake merritt has been identified as a 23-year-old mother. kimberly robertson recently moved here from dallas, texas. she was the mother of a 3-year- old. her body was found near park avenue and third avenue. investigators are still not sure if she was killed there or killed somewhere else. family members say she was last seen getting into a van outside of a oakland nightclub late friday or early saturday morning. the california air national guard has released new pictures of this week's dramatic rescue at sea. on sunday, a navy warship

rescued a family off their sale boat hundreds of miles off the coast of mexico. a national guard team played a critical role in the mission. the 1-year-old girl remains in stable condition on board that u.s. navy ship. the ship is scheduled to arrive in san francisco where the baby will undergo further medical treatment. police in novato have released a sketch of a man they want to talk to in connection with a homicide. they say this man might be from central american country. police are offering a $1,000 reward for a positive i.d. on the man. the homicide victim has been identified as 31-year-old jimmy lucero tejada. a hiker found his body friday evening in an open space near the loma verde preserve. police have not said how tejada was killed. it's the first homicide in novato this year. there were none last year. 7:08. today is opening day at at&t park for the giants.

fans are already lined up this morning. ktvu's alex savidge is live from inside the ballpark now with more on what to expect if you are going to the game. alex? >> reporter: well, the san francisco giants are coming back home. they are ready to kick off the season. the home opener here in san francisco and the stage is all set for this game later on today here at at&t park. look at this field. this is a beautiful site here. take a look at this grass. we're not allowed to touch it. that's just the rules here. but just perfectly cut grass. everything ready to go for the home opener. i thought the field looked perfect. you can see there in the distance, they are putting the finishing touches on that. they are doing some trimming work there. you can see some gentleman doing some trimming work just to make sure things are perfect when the giants and diamondbacks get together later on today and there will be a lot of fans. the place is packed. it's a soldout game. fans are already here at the

ball park. table a look at some of them. they are inside the public house. they are watching the broadcast from knbr. the giants, they are doing well so far. fans are excited. they are 5-2 so far. first place in the n.l. west. they've been on the road and now coming back home for the opener. they've played the diamondbacks first and then they played the dodgers. they are in first place. the fans are feeling good about this season and they say opening day, the home opener, it's a special day. >> we had to be here. i grew up two blocks from candlestick. i've been to many, many, many home openers. just gotta be here, man. >> reporter: if you do come down to the ballpark today or any time this season, you want to keep in mind, there are new security measures in place this season. we'll talk about some of them. you see these metal detectors? we got video of them. they will be up at some of the

7:14. we're learning new information about a shooting at a los angeles police department building. investigators now say an officer was shot seven times after a man walked in and opened fire. two officers fired back critically injuring the suspect. it happened while a community meeting was being held at the police station and witnesses

report hearing at least 20 shots. >> if an individual comes into a police station and starts shooting for no reason, we don't know what this person is capable of. >> the officer who was injured is still in the hospital this morning and is expected to survive. the gunman was last listed in critical condition. just last june, a gunman ambushed two police detectives outside that same police station and that gunman was never caught. we are learning more about what led up to the shooting at fort hood that left four people, including the gunman, dead. investigators say army truck driver ivan lopez had requested leave before the shooting. they did not say whether the request was denied or approved. last wednesday, lopez opened fire killing three people and injuring 16 more before turning the gun on himself. there are reports he got intoen a argument with other soldiers before the shooting. two students in santa monica, they've been arrested after fighting with a teacher

and it was all caught on tape. on monday, an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old were arrested charged with battery. look at this video from friday. you can see a long-time teacher and wrestling coach trying to pin a student to the ground. witnesses said it started after a conflict between the student and the teacher about the student's drug use. the school board put the teacher on leave, saying his use of physical restraint was unacceptable. now, the superintendent apologized later for making those comments after thousands of parents and former students flooded the school board with angry letters like this and e- mails defending the teacher. one such advocate was a former student and a founder of the silicon startup placebo. daniel jacobs started this petition asking that that teacher be reinstated. jacobs praised the teacher's actions to protect his

students. the investigation is still underway. students at uc santa barbara are still talking about a violent raid during a block party over the weekend. the student body president sent e-mails to students saying they need to take more responsibility for their actions. at least six law enforcement officers and dozens of spring break students were hurt when 15,000 people hit the streets and things quickly got out of control. want to check in with sal. some people say there's kind of the staggered spring break and that's keeping traffic light over the last couple of weeks. >> i think so. i think that would help us all out. i don't see anything that light out there. but i guess it could be heavier. let's take a look at 880. this looks good. it doesn't start slowing down until after 8:00 when a lot of people push into downtown oakland. but the bay bridge is slow. it's backed up for a 30-minute

sex and race. this falls on what activists call equal payday. that's the day the average american woman would need to work to american as much man as her male counterpart did in the previous year. a coalition of community groups and labor unions took the first step in the proposal to increase the minimum wage in san francisco to $15 an hour. the group filed paperwork  yesterday for a proposed measure on the november ballot to increase the minimum wage to $13 an hour in 2015, $14 an hour in 2016, and $15 an hour by 2017. san francisco's chamber of commerce has concerns about the proposal saying it should be studied to make sure it doesn't have negative consequences on job creators around the economy. san francisco right now has the highest minimum wage of the country. $10.15 an hour but not for long. santa fe, new mexico wage is

85 living up to its horrible reputation. i get so many e-mails and tweets about 85 being the freeway of death. they are kidding, of course. but it's very slow all the way to saratoga. back to the desk. >> all right, sal. happening today -- a former concord police officer will face a judge on charges that he stole prescription drugs from senior citizens. tara moriarty is joining us live from the contra costa county courthouse to tell us how his case could affect hundreds of other cases. >> reporter: good morning. matthew switzer will be appearing before the judge later this afternoon. he did officially resign yesterday. we reached out to fellow police officers with the concord police officer and they say they were shocked and devastated by his arrest. this casts doubt on his credibility. that means that hundred of cases that he was involved with could possibly be overturned. now, switzer was a k-9 officer with the concord police

department and turned himself in and was booked into jail on friday. he's accused of using his position as a police officer to enter a senior living center steal norco, a powerful prescription drug. his attorney said he was stopped in 2012 and received dog bites and had to be treated with a. >> he was the lead investigator. he was the officer who decided to pull over my client and the officer who decided to release a dog on him, ultimately resulted in my client being bitten. >> reporter: the client claimed that he ran from switzer because the officer was acting unreasonably and unprofessionally. the jury didn't believe that. they convicted him. the prosecutors never called switzer to the stand. that's because switzer himself was under criminal investigation and on leave. now the public defender's office will have to pore over thousands of open and closed

cases that involve switzer. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. also happening today -- leland yee is due back in court in just a couple hours. he's scheduled to enter a plea. his arraignment is set for 9:30 this morning in federal court in san francisco. now, he's accused of corruption and gun trafficking. codefendants keith jackson and ray manned shrimp boy chow are also scheduled to be in court. the california senate has removed the web pages of yee and two other suspended state senators. most senators have their photos on their district home pages. the home pages for yee and rod wright and ron cal de -- ron calderon just show the seal with no mention of their name. all three senators are still being paid their $95,000 a year salaries. an alert cashier at grayton

casino is responsible for ending the luck of an elaborate credit card ring. brian flores is in the newsroom to explain how the cashier figured out and the warning that shorts have for people all over the bay area. good morning, brian. >> good morning. practically all of us use ke bit or credit cards -- debit or credit cards. the victims didn't know their cards were being used. people in this ring would steal active credit card or debit card numbers and use the machine to make the credit cards with the new number. the counterfeit cards would be used to withdraw thousands of dollars in cash or used in major purchases like cars or hotel rooms. investigators arrested six people so far in this ring. the suspects arrested all over the bay area, including walnut creek, san francisco and hayward. police are still looking for one other person involved. the group would mainly operate inside a hotel room at the double tree in rohnert park.

an alert cashier noticed a discrepancy when somebody from the group tried to use a counterfeit card and cash voucher. they say the information didn't match. this is how investigators say ring leaders got the numbers. >> they can steal it when someone orders it over the internet on a nonsecure site. they get it from internet sites. we've had a lot of cases where they put a skimming device inside a gas pump. >> also recovered at the hotel parking lot were a couple of stolen mercedes cars that were rented at bay area airports, again, by stolen credit card numbers. inside the room were drugs, a meth pipe and a laptop computer with a card reader. over all, about 50, 60 cards were recovered. losses are estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars. in the newsroom, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:37. there is a new trend involving counter fit money spreading in sacramento county. in this case, the problem is

not with $100 bills but with fake 10s, 5s, even 1s. at the arden fair mall one man was caught with $13,000 in fake bills. now more businesses are buying systems. >> they feel there's less attention paid to a lower denomination bill than the higher ones. >> the sacramento county sheriff's department said they see about 50 counter fit cases every year. most cases go to the secret service. top democrats are standing up for dianne feinstein after a former director accused her of being too emotional. kyla campbell is live in washington, d.c. to explain the backlash there on capitol hill. >> reporter: on one of the sunday morning political shows former cia director michael

with more. >> it's called a brain health registry. the focus, to tackle the tough diseases such as alzheimer's and parkinson's. you sign up on the website brainhealthregistry.org, answer questions, play some games and they do the research. organizers want you to do back to the site every three to six months to take more testifies and help researchers understand the brain. it's the first project to use the internet in this way. the information will be used to study other things like depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and other neurological issues. you won't get scores back because they say that could influence things. hundreds of hospital workers are finding out they will soon be out of a job. the palm drive hospital board made the controversial decision last night, they are closing by

the end of this month. now, it's in sebastopol and provides the closest emergency room for outlying areas. board members voted to shut down the hospital because they are running out of money. the ceo says on average only eight beds a day are filled and the er, the hospital labs are losing almost $2 million a year. the closure will force people in towns to drive. >> now any kind of medical calls will take 15, 20 minutes longer just to get to the er. >> because of that decision, 250 people will also loss their jobs. task force plans to look at the option of reopening the hospital as an outpatient facility without an emergency department. covered california is being called a success. but some say the state has not

done enough to reach out to the latino population. according to initial reports, only 26% of hshts enrolled for covered california deadline. that's about 12,000 less than the state projected. latinos are a target for the program because they tend to be younger and healthier offsetting the costs of caring for sicker and older enrollees. >> it's not a good feeling. you are worried about your yearly physical and dental also. >> 3 million people have health insurance in california. covered california is still adding up their final numbers which are expected to be released sometime next week. 7:49. let's check in with sal. you are watching highway 24, aren't you? >> we are and tori mentioned that we might be having a better time because of spring break. >> yeah. >> i hope so, tori. look at highway 24. i want you to look at it with me. doesn't look all that bad. it's just a little lighter than

have said 76, 75. today, 70. i don't think the fog will be an impact. it is for a few. there are areas where the fog is rather thick but it's shallow and low. it will be gone by noon if not sooner and temperatures will be mild to warm. you can see the higher clouds coming in. yesterday this was clear. we have a little twist, a different forecast. a few upert 40s, mid-50s, generally running cooler about 3, 5 degrees compared to yesterday. most of the offshore breeze is kind of -- it's a push. there's a slight west. a little east, depending upon your location. it's not that strong at all. another nice day with a little cooldown by the coast. 31 up in tahoe. 33 in reno. each day i think we'll see an increase in the fog as this system inches closer, kind of budges the high out of the way. a lot of sunshine. a couple of patches of thick fog. i don't think it will last much locker. 70s for -- longer.

down their street and crashed into a parked semi and three parked cars. her stepdad claims she has a developmental disability and is prone to sleepwalking but has never done anything like this. no one was hurt. the girl was not arrested but she was cited and will have to appear in juvenile court. the university of connecticut is your new ncaa men's basketball champions. city. unless something happens, it never really has, in all of my years of doing this, it's always slow after a home opener getting out of the city. northbound 280 is a mess. 85 solid from 87 saratoga and 101 is backed up from southern san jose the whole way through. so santa clara valley not having a holiday. it looks terrible. back to the desk. continuing coverage of the fast-moving fire in san jose that destroyed one home and damaged two more. it broke out around 3:00 yesterday afternoon on mossbrook circle, not far from westgate mall. janine de la vega is finding out more about where the fire may have started and how the neighborhood is coming together to help the people who lost everything. good morning, ja neeb. >> -- janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. it's very sad. neighbors describe this as a war zone. this car, completely burned,

destroyed. behind it is the property that's basically now completely devastated. they put up these chain-link fences. there's no longer a house there. it's piles of rubble. the homeowner was on his way to los angeles, heard his house was on fire. he was teary-eyed and said he was just glad his family who was left there was able to escape but now, as you can see, all of this belongings are -- his belongings are gone. fire crews brought into a bull doser to move the piles of debris because the fire was still burning underneath it and they needed to get to the flames. an investigator was able to go onto the property before that to look for what may have caused the fire to start but now that the scene has been disrupted i'm told by firefighters it's too hard to collect any evidence. the fire was stubborn. it began at 3:00 yesterday afternoon and continued to burn for around eight hours. it destroyed one house and damaged the two neighboring

homes. >> she said she had like 15,000 photos on her computer and it's now a molten mass of yuck. so we're gonna try to see if we can eventually get into the house try to find that computer, grab the hard drive and see whether we can magically resurrect it. >> reporter: a couple of families are being helped by the red cross. they are looking for answers. firefighters watched over the homes overnight to make sure that nothing sparked back up. a firefighter told me this morning that investigators seemed to think the fire may have started near an electrical box towards the back of the home but that's just preliminary. it's unclear if any other investigator will be back out again today. so still no definitive cause of this fire. but we have learned from the people who live here this is a very tight-night neighborhood. they -- tight-knit neighborhood. they are do everything they can to support those who had their homes destroyed or damaged.

reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we have more about the type of homes. they are called cihler homes. these homes can be found all over northern california and in parts of southern california. they are designed to bring the outside in with a lot of windows and open space. the firefighters say that type of floor plan, it actually fueled the flames during yesterday's fire. the design of the homes, it creates a draft effect. it sucks air up and through the house. people who live in the homes that burned say they knew about the higher fire danger. they say the homes are known as seven-minute eichler because they burn fast. here in the bay area, the homes can be found in several cities including san rafael, san mateo, mountain view, walnut creek, oakland and san jose. 8:05. the woman found beaten to death by oakland's lake merritt has been identified as a young

mother. 23-year-old kimberly robertson had recently moved to oakland from dallas. she had a 3-year-old daughter. robertson's body was found saturday morning near park boulevard and third avenue. investigators are not sure if she was killed there or somewhere else. relatives say she was last seen getting into a van outside an oakland nightclub late friday or early saturday morning. in novato police released a sketch of a man they want to talk to in connection with a homicide in that city. they say this man might be from a central american country. police are kof offering a -- are overing a $11 -- are offering a $1,000 reward for a positive i.d. on the man. jimmy lucero tejada's body was found by a hiker friday evening in an open space near the loma verde preserve. police have not said how tejada was killed. it's the first homicide in novato this year and there were none last year. the search for a missing menlo park woman last seen on

mount tam has been suspended. the family is pleading for anyone who come forward who has any information. >> please contact rangers. >> she was last seen on this surveillance video at the book jack parking lot on march 30th. park rangers say she paid for day parking but never came back. they started searching for her over the weekend. so far no sign of her. >> we don't know if she's voluntary lost. we don't know if she's a victim of some foul play. but right now, she's just lost. >> now, her white rental car has been impounded by the marin county sheriff's department. park rangers say the search has been suspended until they get new leads or information about a specific part of the mountain to search. the california air national guard released new photos of this week's dramatic rescue at

sea. a navy warship rescued a sick child aboard a family sailboat hundreds of miles off the coast of mexico. a national guard team from moffett field played a key role in the position. the girl is in stable condition on the ship and that ship is due to arrive in san diego tomorrow with r the girl will go more medical -- where the girl will undergo more medical treatment. today, google is set to announce a glass for work program. it's tee signed to bring more business applications to its high-tech users. glass is currently only available to people who are testing the devices. it includes some business companies, hospitals and law enforcement agencies. details on how the program works will be announced today. 8:08. this is the day giants' fans have been waiting for. they are back in town for the home opener at at&t park. ktvu's alex savidge is inside

8:14. just moments ago, in fact, authorities in washington state raised the official death toll to 34 in the mudslide disaster in the town of oso. that's one higher than yesterday's death toll. the coroner's office is still working to identify this latest victim. 12 people are also still missing following the tragedy that occurred three weeks ago. 8:15. this morning we're learning more about a possible motive for that deadly fort hood texas army base shooting. investigators say the gunman, ivan lopez, asked for time off just before the shooting. but they didn't say if it was approved or turned down. last wednesday, lopez shot and killed three people, injured 16

more before he killed himself. there are reports that he argued with other soldiers before the shooting. rampage. we're learning more information about a shooting at a los angeles police department building. investigators say an officer was shot seven times after a man walked in and opened fire at 8:00 last night. two officers fired back critically injuring the suspect. it happened white a community -- while a community meeting was being held. witnesses report hearing at least 20 shots. >> if an individual comes into a police station and starts to shoot for no reason, we don't know what this person is capable of. >> the officer injured is in the hospital. he's expected to survive. the gunman was last listed in critical condition. last june, a gunman ambushed two police detectives outside of that same police station. that gunman was never caught. ford is announcing two recalls affecting about 435,000

vehicles. the bigger recall impacts about 386,000 escape suvs built between 2001 and 2004. ford says there may be corrosion issue with the car that could lead to steering problems. the second recall involved nearly 49,000 ford fusions, escapes, c-maxes and lincolns. ford said those vehicles have seatback frames that don't conform to safety standard and increase the risk of injury. hey, sal, what's happening on the roads now? >> that's very slow. last time i told you how bad it was. highway 101 northbound coming up to the 880 interchange. it's very slow. it begins near the capitol expressway. a lot of people going into work in the valley early it seems, earlier than normal. i want to show you this as we get up to the maps. we can kind of take an overview of the south bay.

hl health official will be addressing several thousand people this afternoon at a marketing conference and will go to portland before coming here at san jose state university for several lectures featuring prominent women. a group filed paperwork to raise the minimum wage for $15 for the november ballot to

raise the minimum wage to $13 an hour in 2015. 14 an hour in 2016 and 15 and hour by 2017. san francisco's chamber of commerce has concerns about this. they say it should be studied first to make sure it doesn't have anything niv impacts on job -- negative impacts on job creators and the economy. san francisco has the highest minimum wage in the country. 10.15 an hour. the santa fe, new mexico wage is due to rise to 10.66 an hour in may and a proposed ballot measure in oakland would raise the minimum wage from $8 to $12 toy 25 an hour. 8:24. a new study released this morning is giving hope to people who are paralyzed. researchers say they have successfully restored voluntary movement to four men who were told they would never move their legs again. >> there you go.

if you are taking transit which is probably a good idea, b.a.r.t. has no delays. caltrain and muni have some minor delays. back to the desk. later today, a former concord police officer will face a judge on charges he stole prescription drugs from senior citizens. tara moriarty is joining us live at the contra costa county courthouse to tell us how this case could effect hundred of cases. tara? >> reporter: officer matthew switzer will appear in court later this afternoon. he actually resigned from his job yesterday. his arrest is obviously calling his credibility into question. it would certainly have an impact on other cases that he's been involved with. now, switzer resigned, again, yesterday. he was a k-9 officer for the concord police department. he's accused of using his position as an officer to enter a senior living center and steal norco, a powerful prescription. one attorney said his client was stopped by switserser in

2012. switzer released the man on him. the man suffered dog bites had to be treated at the hospital. a jury didn't believe the man and he was convicted in february. switzer was never called to the stand because he himself was under investigation. >> unfortunately, my client was convicted without the jurors and court having this information and his recourse now is to ask for a new trial. we intend to do that. >> reporter: now the public defender's office has to sift through thousands of cases reviewing every open case as well as closed cases or convictions that might have involved switzer. that would lead to a retrial or a request for a dismissal. live from martinez, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. happening today -- suspended state senator leland yee is due back in court in less than an hour and is

scheduled to enter a plea. his arraignment is scheduled for k-9:00. he's accused -- at 9:00. he's accused of gun trafficking and corruption. two codefendants are scheduled to appear in court. the california senate has removed the web pages of leland yee and two other suspended state senators. most senators have their photographs on their district home pages. but the home pages for senators yee, rod wright and ron calderon now show the state's seal and the number of their districts with no mention of their names. one another note, all three of the suspended senators are still collecting their $95,000 a year salaries. an alert cashier at grayton casino is credited for ending the luck of a counterfeit credit card ring. brian flores is in our newsroom to explain how the group was eventually uncovered and the warning for others this

morning, too, good morning. >> in this age where cash is rarely used people need to be aware of unsecured internet sites and places like gas pumps. investigators say those are some of the ways this group stole active credit card numbers. once they got the numbers, they would use this machine, and then make new counterfeit cards. deputies arrested six people so far in the ring. two women and four men from places like walnut creek, hayward and folks. all of those involved were taken into custody. investigators say they would create the cards inside the room at the double tree hotel near rohnert park. they apparently thought the group was an easy target. but that was not the case here. an alert employee noticed red flags. >> atm, got a voucher, the coucher -- they go up to the cashier to try to cash it. the cashier looked at the

credit card, looked at the i.d., and noticed the credit card appeared to be counter fit. they ran the magnetic strip and some of the -- the magnetic strip didn't work. >> now, two of the people were detained at the hotel until sheriff's deputies arrived. when they got there, they uncovered two stolen rental cars. several thousands of dollars in cash, drugs, a meth pipe and a laptop computer with a card reader. the room they were in was checked in by a credit card card as well. the hotel manager became suspicious when the suspects tried at least four other cards before a fifth one finally worked. meantime, the group made about 50 to 60 counterfeit cards. investigators say they are looking for one more person involved in the ring. losses estimated to be about tens of thousands of dollars. we're live in the newsroom brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. democrats in congress are standing up for a california senator accused of being emotional. that was the adjective used by

a former cia director when describing dianne feinstein. he said the senator was not objective into the interrogation methods. kyla campbell is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom to explain the backlash on capitol hill. kyla? >> reporter: on one of the sunday morning shows, michael haden said the investigation results might show feinstein's deep, emotional feeling and lack of onivity. they -- objectivity. they voted about the questionable methods of the cia. the cia is moving those sections before moving forward. top democrats were quick to defend feinstein saying haden would not have made those same accusations against a man. >> because she criticizes

tactics led by general haden that was torture, she is being too emotional? i don't think so. >> reporter: feinstein defended her investigation into the cia's tactics, calling the former director's comments nonsense. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. happening today, another $100 million donation for ucsf from the ceo. mark bennyoff and his wife gave money to children's hospital back in 2010. the new donation will be split between ucsf and children's hospital oakland. that hospital will now be renamed ucsf bennyoff children's hospital oakland. back in january, the two hospitals formed an alliance. they are jointly conducting research and offering comprehensive medical care. if you are looking for a way to cool off, why not grab a free scoop of ben and jerry's

the grass perfectly cut already for opening day. they face off against the arizona diamondbacks. you are looking live. you can see they are practicing the unfurling, if you will, of the american flag. that's gonna happen right before the first pitch this afternoon. these folks are gonna be involved in that. it takes some practice to make sure the flag unfurles properly -- unfurls properly. all part of the festivities on opening day. the giants, they are playing well so far. 5-2 so far. they've been on the road against the diamondbacks and then the dodgers. they are coming back home here for the home opener first place in the n.l. west. they are playing well. fans are excited about today's game. they are optimistic about this season. >> i couldn't sleep. ready for a great game today.

to her car. ed lee is going to the state capitol showing his support to reform the ellis act. he will testify at a hearing on the ellis act reform bill that's sponsored by mark leno. leno's bill would give san francisco renters protection from eviction under the ellis act by el estate -- by real estate speculators. it would require an owner to own a building for five years before invoking the ellis act. the city right now bans rentals that are less than 30 days unless the host has a permit. some people are renting out spaces in their homes to tourists to make some extra cash. now, people who went out spaces on websites like air b and b, they are now facing fines, even the possibility of eviction on the grounds of illegally running a hotel. chick-fil-a is hoping to become a major player in the
