coverage continues. this is ktvu channel news at awe. it's only april but bay area firefighters are on high alert tonight as the dry weather makes for dangerous conditions. more firefighters and early training. that's the plan by cal fire as it ramps up one momentarily for -- hasn't early for fire season. got an exclusive look at the first days of training for cal fire. with the elite tack unit. >> there, little a hot day and the bay area has had a lot of those lately and the conditions led cal fire to start training early before fire season really takes off. >> a cal fire helicopter starting up is a familiar sound but unusual in early april. cal fire's elite hell i pack unit took to the air today launching a training program that usually starts in may.

court. matthew switser now faces several charges including elderlier abuse. paul chambers is live in martinez, paul, what have you learned about this case. >> we were able to learn that the officer had numerous phoney prescriptions. he was able to use his power as a police officer to get into the victim's houses. the actions could likely cause death. >> today matthew switser didn't appear in court. the former concord police officer is facing 5 felony counts dating back to october last year. one count of burglary. one count of elderly abuse that according to the charging documents was under circumstances in conditions likely to produce great bodily harm and death. his attorney said david switser has a drug problem. >> this is a case of someone

a ship carrying a sick baby and her family is expected to reach san diego tomorrow. played a critical role in retrieving the family from their disabled sailboat on sunday. the one-year-old girl remains in stable condition and is expected to under go further treatment when the ship reaches lands. none of the federal agencies said they plan to seek reimbursement for the cost of this operation. within just the past hour the -- city council voted to ease disability -- in a 7-4 vote approved the so called disability make work proposal. underthe plan if an officer is injured on the job the city is required to find the officer another job. but the san jose police officer's union said that kind of benefit will not help recruit or retain officers. >> right now we've already had 21 resignations and 17 retirements and we've got more

this exhibit runs through april 17th. new at 5:00 the heroic rescue by a 9-year-old boy after his father is injured in a snow mobile accident. we are hearing first hand how that boy got help. quick thinking may have helped save his father's life. as john fowler reports his entire family is understandablely very proud. >> 9-year-old bodie feeling rightfully special. >> because i saved my dad and a lott of people are like, wow, you saved your dad. >> wow is right. this remote snow mobile accident could have killed bodie's father. this video after bodie led rescuers back. after the crash boldy struck off alone on his snow mobile to get help. >> pretty nervous and it was just a lot of pressure on me to try to get someone.

>> berkeley police say minutes after the officer approached the man he found himself on the ground being punched in the face. >> he was hit multiple times in the face, kicked multiple times. so it was an extremely brutal attack. >> berkeley police president says the officer was knocked unconscious and woke up and found the man trying to remove the gun from his bell. the man was arrested. his mental health status is unclear but says the officer involved is a 10 year veteran with extensive mental health experience. he helped develop the crisis intervention team. >> this is not a situation where words obviously were going to be of any use. i think the only thing that would have saved him would have been a taser. >> stein says berkeley and san francisco are the only departments at major bay city areas without tasers.
