we're live in san jose, where police investigators are trying to track down a driver who hit and killed a pedestrian this morning. we'll give you an update on the traffic situation out here because of the investigation. new details of a major

story that's still unfolding in pennsylvania. at least 20 high school students have been hurt this morning in a campus stabbing. and a widespread internet security flaw has been uncovered. it could lead your personal information at risk. what you need to know about the so-called bug. and major traffic news out of alameda. a person was just hit by a car. the major streets shut down right now because of this crash. "mornings on 2" starts now. you are looking live at the scene of a deadly shooting and run -- shooting and hit and run. coming up we'll hear what investigators are searching for that kept the usually busy thoroughfare shut down for hours. as you can see, it's now open. good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark.

let's talk about weather and traffic. a lot to tell you. steve's right over there. >> we also have a pretty good cool down on the old weather menu because yesterday's temperatures were way above. so a lot of fog here. 40s, 50s. but more 50s. some of that fog will be slow to head back to the coast. coast and bay will drop. 60s, 50s. way down from yesterday. some temperatures, 20 degrees above average for this time of year. yesterday, napa 85. oakland, 79. today 68. livermore, 86. soft 80. today we'll go 78 degrees. overall, the fog is back. it will get helped along by a weak low pressure system. about 5 degrees cooler. not only that, but the westerly breeze is definitely ramped up here. even napa showing where. yesterday we had any breeze at all. that's -- we hardly had any breeze. higher clouds will cruise

across as well. fog, low clouds, some sun but there's a mix of higher clouds. cooler for all. mainly 60s and 70s. we have a problem in alameda. otis drive near park. there is an injury accident involving a person that was hit by a car. otis drive at park street and that general area closed. you might want to use shoreline as alternates. you might want to think about just going around the area if you know the area. just go around a couple of blocks up on park street and go around this problem. this is right near the shoreline -- southshore center where trader joe is. please give yourself extra time. a lot of police and fire department on the scene doing the investigation. let's move along to the live picture of the bay bridge toll plaza. about a 20, 25-minute drive time unless you are in the carpool lane which will make it a lot less. no problems on the bridge itself. this is 280 in san jose. it's beginning to slow down a little bit into the santa clara

valley. 85 as well approaching 17. capital sproi as you heard janine say, you will hear her say has reopened. we're just about to go to that. let's toss it back tat desk. new this morning, police in san jose are investigating a deadly hit-and-run accident. it happened shortly before 2:00 this morning on capitol expressway. that street has just reopened. ktvu's janine de la vega has been at the crash scene since 4:30 this morning and joins us live with information about the victim. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. the eastbound lanes of capitol expressway opened up in the last five minutes. you can see it's very busy now as the morning commute is happening. it was closed for five hours from seven trees to snell avenue. the traffic investigation unit is handling the investigation. they've left the scene. they are back in the office. their focus is fidding evidence that will help lead them to a

suspect car. just before 2:00 a.m., the 911 calls started to come in after a man was spotted on capitol expressway. officers arrived and she was pronounced dead at the scene. they were able to determine that he had been hit by a car but the driver did leave the scene investigators did to a canvass of the neighborhood searching for anybody who may have witnessed the accident. there's not a crosswalk where the man was hit. it's also poorly lit when it's dark. homeless people in the area say they see a lot of jaywalkers. >> it doesn't surprise me because i know a lot of friends who do the same thing. they will just run across the street and like i said, some of these people are crazy drivers. >> reporter: in this case, police do not know if this man was a transient or not or who he is. investigators did, though, find debris in the road where the accident happened. they were trying to determine if it belongs to the car that hit the man. at this point, they are looking

for any leads in this case because they want to find out what the make and model of the car is. officers did tell us that the victim is african-american and he is in his 20s. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:0 of. more details -- 7:06. more details on pedestrian deaths in san jose. according to research compied by the mercury news. these types of deaths are on the ride. in 2013, 26 people were hit by cars. the most in the entire bay area. compare that to san francisco where there were 17 pedestrian deaths. in oakland, there were seven pedestrian deaths in 2013. san jose officials say the city is taking steps to improve safety for people walking on city streets, including 32 recently completed projects or projects in the design stage. 7:06. we're still following developing news about several people stabbed this morning at

a high school near pittsburgh, pennsylvania. new reports say 20 people were hurt at franklin regional high school in murrysville, pennsylvania and all of them are students. cnn is reporting several of the victims have life-threatening injuries. we're watching the scene from overhead. you see the ambulances and the emergency crews arriving. now, police say the attacker is a student who is in custody and is being questioned. police also say not all of the students were stabbed. some of the people were hurt as they ran for safety and fell down in the chaos. now, we're keeping an eye on this, monitoring this quickly- still developing story. we'll bring you another update coming up at 7:30. back here at home, a san  francisco supervisor pushing for police officers to wear body cameras. this is in response to last month's deadly police shooting of a city college student at bernal heights park. john avalos is calling for aer

aing to look at the -- for a hearing to look at the cost and the benefits of giving body cameras to the entire police force. he says those cameras would help rebuild the trust between the police and the public. now, greg suhr recently rolled out a grant-funded test program to give 50 plain clothes officers, body cameras. there's growing concern about a dangerous computer bug. it may be exposing personal information of millions of people. ktvu's alex savidge joining us live this morning to tell us who is at risk of what's called the heart bleed bug. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, dave, good morning to you. a number of websites and businesses are scrambling to fix this security flaw. that includes a lot of popular sites that a lot of visit. places like google, amazon and facebook. the problem centers around encryption. you have probably noticed a lot of the websites begin with

htts. the s stands for security. hackers may have found a way to get around that. this bug may be impacting up to two thirds of all websites. it was discovered by a security firm working with google. computer experts call this one of the most serious security flaws because anyone who goes online could be at risk. the websites are using a security software and hackers can potentially access things like passwords and credit card numbers without anyone even noticing. and the real troubling part about all of this, the bug has been in existens for two years -- existence for two years. but it was not uncovered. it's unknown how much damage has been done in the meantime. >> it makes you worry. there are a lot of things that can happen, personal security,

personal financing. and in the workplace. it makes me worry about that. makes me want to learn more about it. >> reporter: as far as what you should be doing, there is actually conflicting advice. some websites are urging users to go online sand change their passwords immediately but some security experts differ. they say it's probably not a good idea to rush out and change your passwords because accessing sites that are potentially vulnerable could put you at risk once again. we're live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. starting next month, it will be against the law to feed ferel cats in antioch -- feral cats. a permit is required if someone wants to keep more than five

accounts. the council decided to consider establishing several controlled feeding areas and implementing a trap, neuter and return program. the deadliest flu season in four years is coming to a close in california. officials say 355 people under the age of 65 died of the flu since september. that's three times as many as last year's flu season. health experts say the spike in deaths is likely due to the resurgence of the swine flu strain which hits young adults hard. the flu season is winding down and will officially end in mid- may. the death of mickey rooney now putting the spotlight on fighting between his family members. mickey rooney died sunday at the age of 93. his family members are arguing over what to do with his remains. yesterday a judge ordered no one can claim his body from the mortuary until the

7:14. an attack on a berkeley police officer is renewing calls to arm the department with stun guns. the officer responded to a disturbance call at aquatic park on monday. when the officer approached the man, the man knocked the officer to the ground and punched him in the face. the officer briefly lost consciousness and when he woke up, he found the man trying to take his gun. >> yeah, they been hit multiple times in the face and the head. kicked multiple times. so it was an extremely brutal attack. >> 44-year-old carlos alberto del gar zoe was arrested for attempted homicide and felony battery. investigators are looking into whether his mental health was an issue. the berkeley police association says the incident could possibly have been avoided if the officer was allowed to carry a stun gun.

the berkeley council may revisit the issue in the coming weeks. 7:15. oakland police say crime is down 15% but there's still room for improvement. last night the city's interim police chief and five area commanders held this publy safety meeting at oakland tech high school. the police say homicides are up. but the number of gun assaults, rains, robberies and burglaries are down. >> the trend that began last summer of a reduction in shootings, robberies, burglaries have continued through the first quarter of this year. >> each oakland police commander outlines specific problems in their arias. for example, street racing. that's a problem in west oakland and downtown. jack london square, known for car break-ins, prostitution is a problem along international boulevard. gun violence by gangs and street robberies like stealing cell phones, cash and jewelry at bus stops and from people

just walking on sidewalks. those are problems in east oakland. police in fremont telling homeowners install surveillance cameras. take a look at this video. you can see a woman stealing a package from outside of a house. police say this video helped them find the stolen items and the suspect. now, police say between 2012 and 2013 there was a 20% drop in home burglaries and they say more cameras is part of the reason why. >> it's great evidence and prosecutors losk that -- love that evidence. >> last night police hosted a workshop teaching people in the warm springs district how to establish a surveillance network. they told the people taking photos or video with their smartphones, that's another good way to capture anything suspicious happening in their neighborhood. 7:17. well, nursing homes are often encouraged to come up with

creative ways to entertain their residents. but a senior facility in new york may have gone too far. in fact, this nursing home is being sued accused of bringing in strippers to entertain its residents. >> so much craziness that's going on not related to the nursing holes-- homes. it don't belong here. >> this man saw this picture in his mom's room. it shows her putting money in the stripper's underwear. she said the stripper said to do that and she was told to use her own money. family members say it was not appropriate. 7:18. let's check traffic now. see if everyone is behaving themselves on the highway. how does it look, sal? >> we have a pretty serious crash here in alameda. otis drive. i want to put it on a map for you. if you do drive in alameda, you know that's a pretty busy area. you are gonna have to use some safety other roads to get around it. police investigation is on their way. we have a crew arriving at the

scene. we'll show you pictures of the area soon. but police remain on the scene. all right. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, this traffic here, about a 25 to 30-minute delay. no problems on the upper deck of the bay bridge. but i would say drive time because the delay is about maybe 10, 15 minutes but then you have to drive across the bridge. and there are no problems on highway 24. we promised you the drive time. it's about 12 minutes from the 680/24 interchange through the caldecott tunnel. it's a little busy here in la fayette and orinda. 680 is slowing down a little bit. but then there are no major problems along the way when it comes to lane blockage. thank you, sir. sun as you saw for some. yesterday, it was way down here. didn't amount to much. today it's been lifted. it will cool us down in a big way. especially those 20 degrees

above average. some higher clouds drifting by. not a big deal. you know when temperatures are 12, 13, 18 and 19 degrees above average. it has to come down fast. yesterday, 75 san francisco. 79 in oakland. 86 in livermore. 87 san jose. matt sent me a picture from his car thermometer and said 91. steve is this right? no, but gilroy was 88. car thermometers send to run normal. san francisco 66. for the 75 yesterday and 80 on monday. kind of feels like it. more fog cooler today. high pressure losing its grip. a little low is going to go right towards the southern california coast. that will continue to pick up the fog bank and give us a cooler pattern. plenty of low clouds in place. if you don't have those. it's already sunny, who -- 40s and 50s. the key was the breeze. 16, gusts to 23 at fairfield. oakland, sfo, all showing a

[laughter] >> yeah. >> i don't think that was too accurate. 7:21. if you drive a toyota you may be affected by a new recall. the company announced today it's recalling nearly 6.4 million vehicles. issues range from steering problems that could keep the air bag from deploying to drivers automatically sliding forward during a crash. toyota says it's not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the glitches. the problems were found in 27 models. they include the rav4, corolla, yaris and the highlander. we're still following developing news from pennsylvania. a shocking story. 20 high school students hurt in a stabbing rampage at a school. but not all of the injuries are from stabbings. what we're finding happened after the first attack.

appearance guidelines and they are upsetting some african- american women. the rules include a ban on many hairstyles like dreadlocks and unkempt or matted braids and cornrows. a national guard sergeant has started the white house petition saying the new changes are racially bias and show a lack of regard for epic hair. more than 14,000 people have signed the petition so far. three recent robberies in a quiet neighborhood on the peninsula in the last two days. the unusual weapons that has people on high alert. >> reporter: we're lav in san jose where the fire department remains on scene checking for any hot spots, surveying any damage after an early-morning house fire. coming up what may have caused it and how and how a family is doing. we're looking at a commute on 237 that will be slow getting up in the valley. some of the valley approaches are slow. we're also following a deadly

clouds. really being picked up by a stge a low which will enhance over the next few days. 40s and 50s but yesterday, no breeze. quiet, calm. today, 16. gusting 23 at travis. a west wind at oakland and and a west wind at sfo. although if you are inland, a lot more 50s and 60s. as you head towards the west. some thick fog. fog, sun, cooler. 60s, 70s for most. here's sal. steve, we have a problem in alameda. it's an injury accident and it's a deadly crash in alameda's southshore neighborhood. this is the -- this is on otis street near park in front of the southshore shopping center if you are not familiar, it's the center that has the trader joe's and the safeway and the old navy in it, that area there. the street is closed after a deadly crash that happened this morning. police are on the scene and you cannot get through. you can use some of the alternate routes. police say a woman in her 60s

was crossing the street when she was struck by a minivan. the driver of the minivan remained on the scene and is cooperating with authorities. but this investigation will take some time. you can see alameda police are still on the scene. let's go to other things. i want to show you the bay bridge toll plaza. that backup is -- or the drive time, i should say, between oakland and san francisco is about 25 minutes. pretty slow. we had something on the bridge that made it extra slow. they were clearing up a minor crash near treasure island. that's why you see it's pretty crowded there. also looking at the richmond bridge approach. we have more people coming in towards san rafael. that's about a five-minute delay at the toll plaza. no major trouble at the bridge getting into marin county. we're still following developing news from pennsylvania. 20 high school students hurt today in one of the worse mass stabbings in american history. pam coomb is in the newsroom.

you -- pam cook is in the newsroom. you are getting the latest information. >> this all happened just as the school day was beginning at franklin regional high school in murrysville, pennsylvania, a suburb of pittsburgh. police say a student took a knife to his classmates early this morning in the hallways and inside some of the classrooms. there are mixed reports on the number and types of injuries that the students sustained but police are saying the people injured are all students. some are in very critical condition. officers saying some of the students are stabbed. others were hurt while trying to escape the violence. >> currently, we have 20 students that have been injured. four of which have been flown by helicopter. the suspect is in custody. he's being questioned by the murrysville police department. >> the person in custody, a male student, a sophomore at the school, no clues at this point as to what may have

sparked this stabbing. fox news is reporting that a surgeon came out of one of the hospitals and kond grach lated a student saying she saved one's life by applying pressure to their wound. we understand a press conference has been scheduled to start any time. we'll monitor that and bring you the latest in our next hour of "mornings on 2." reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details now. mass stabbings are more common yore seas -- overseas but there have a have been a couple of. one year ago today, a student at a community college stabbed and injured 14 people. last september, one student was killed. three were hurt in a stabbing at a high school in spring, texas also near houston. 7:35. new this morning, a fire heavily damaged a house in san jose. it happened at 2:00 on medley drive near the east capitol

expressway. brian flores is live outside of the home where firefighters believe they know where it started. good morning, brian. >> good morning, tori. still pretty extegessive damage as you can see behind me. one san jose fire department engine is here. a fourman crew. you can see the damage on the home on medley court. pretty extensive. the san jose fire department says the fire started in the garage. as we go to video now. the san jose fire department says it likely started in the garage after 2:00 this morning. still unclear how it started as an investigator was here to determine that. it was believed it was electrical or some type of gas leak. five people live at the home. fire officials say it's two couples who live here as well as an 8-year-old child. they were awoken. they quickly evacuated. they were not injured. overall, 23 firefighters were here fighting this fire making sure it didn't spread. there were no evacuations to neighboring homes either. fire crews had to break down

the garage door to get a better fire line in. they set up a water curtain to homes next to the one on fire so it didn't cause any damage. overall, it took about 45 minutes to put it out. as we take it back out here live, still extensive damage. the car, the suv inside as well as to a boat. that was parked on the driveway there, you can see san jose fire department crews still here. but the issue here is the roof of the glaurge. a portion of the -- garage. a portion of the roof has collapsed on top of the suv. when investigators are done, that's when they will determine the best course of action to remove the car safely without putting crews in danger of the roof clap -- collapsing. the red cross was here. residents are being helped u they are staying at a nearby hotel and are doing okay this morning. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. meanwhile, san jose fire investigators say a large fire that damaged three homes on monday was not the work of an

arsonist. people returned yesterday to see what was left of the homes on moss brook circle. investigators say they are still trying to figure out what sparked the flames but believe it was an accident. firefighters say the wide open eichler design at the homes made it easier for the flames to spread. new this morning, police in richmond investigating the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy. his body was found last night at fleming avenue and l street. he was found in the driveway of an apartment complex. police were alerted by a shot spotter and also by 911 calls. they are searching for a woman who police say had a relationship with the victim. they are also looking for a 1999 lexus four-door sedan with tinted windows. it has a california license plate of 5 rld 637. >> this morning, pleasant hill police are looking for the armed robber responsible for a bold takeover robbery.

it happened last night at the verizon store on contra costa boulevard at cottonwood drive. witnesses say the gunman burst into the store, waved the gun and stole phones and crash from the store, employees and even some customers. no one was hurt. the gunman ran away from the store and remains at large. growing concern over a dangerous computer virus. what security experts say is the most surprising thing about this bug. and what is boosting confidence this morning in the desperate search for that malaysia jetliner that disappeared over one month ago. good morning. right now we're still looking at a commute that is affected by certain problems on the roads and if you are driving in alameda, you should avoid otis drive at park street for the scene of a deadly crash investigation. we'll tell you what happened and how long police are likely to be here on the scene.

good morning. we still have a deadly crash investigation in alameda. a person was hit by a car on otis drive near park street. this area is closed. in you go to the southshore center, perhaps to do some shopping, you might be delayed in this area. the stores don't usually open this early. it's also a major commute route otis street for people who live in this part of alameda. you will have to use other routes. a woman in her 60s. police say was hit and killed as she was crossing the street by a minivan. the driver has remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators but police did just arrive on the scene about an hour ago and they say they are gonna be out here for a while longer. avoid the area if you can. 7:had 2. back to the desk.

police say crime is unusual for one area. the robbers' weapons are also unusual. tara moriarty has more. tara? >> reporter: well, police say that one man uses a kitchen knife and the other man uses a hammer in order to threaten his victims. sometimes they work together. sometimes they work separately alone. but you can imagine that people around here are pretty shaken up about all of this. if you take a look behind me, you can see this is ath bathroom. in the men's room is where police say monday night a man was robbed after two men flashed the hammer at him and demanded his belongings. we're not too far from the mall off interstate 28 o the area is call -- 280. the area is called commodore park. this is at the walmart offices on cherry avenue. the man holding a kitchen knife

demanded a laptop computer. he took it and ran off to a northern apartment complex. about three hours later, the victim in the restroom was targeted. the third time, tuesday night at 10:30 in the same area. two men with a kitchen knife demanded his cell phone and ran off towards the same apartments. the suspects are described as latino men, one 25 to 30 years old. 5'10", skinny, last seen wearing a black trench dote in the monday robberies. the other late 20s, had 5'8", thin mustache. i had a black backpack. if you have any information call police. we've seen police driving by this morning. so obviously that's putting some of these neighbors at ease. we're live in san bruno. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a suspect accused in a brutal home invasion attack in san mateo has pleaded not guilty to 20 charges including elder abuse and kidnapping.

20-year-old hugo hernandez junior is accused of terrorizing and torturing a 66- year-old woman. police say he chose the home at random according to court documents, he used a stun gun on her, bound her, put a bag over her head and stuck ner her in a closet. police say -- huck ster in a -- stuck her in a closet. police say he left her in the car. new developments in the missing malaysian jets. crews have detected two more pings. these signals are in the same area where two earlier pings were picked up saturday. the signals are within 17 miles of each other. australian authorities are more optimistic than ever they will find the wreckage of flight 370. they say they hope they will find something as soon as a couple of days. but they add the pings are getting weaker which means the searchers are moving away from whatever is making those sounds or the batteries from the

plane's black boxes, they are running out. the two new signals lasted five and a half minutes and seven minutes. >> i'm now optimistic that we will find the aircraft or what is left of the aircraft in the not too distant future. >> now, technicians have determined that the two signals this past weekend most likely came from some kind of electronic equipment like a flight data recorder. 7:46. leland yee is due back in court on friday. yesterday, yee pleaded not guilty to charges ranging from wire fraud to conspiracy to illegally importing weapons. he could spend the rest of his life behind bars if convicted. yee is keeping a low profile and his attorney is not talking to reporters. however, it's a much different story for raymond shrimp boy

his girlfriend, model, reeva steevkamp. >> made a terrible mistake. >> you made a mistake. >> that's correct. >> you killed a person, isn't that what you did? >> i made a mistake. >> you killed reeva steevkamp, that's what you did. >> he admits to shooting her but he says he mistook her for an intruder. pistorius has broken down and cried several times on the witness stand this week. a man was shot and killed in antioch right outside of a liquor store. newschopper2 was flying over west 19th as police investigated this deadly shooting around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. police responded to reports of shots fired. they found the victim had been shot several times. he was taken to the hospital but he later died. if you have any information about this get in contact with antioch police. two people have been arrested in connection with a shooting at a restaurant in

downtown san rafael. early in the morning on march 1st, a man walked into paw's mexican and filipino cuisine on b street and police say he shot someone several times before running away. yesterday, police arrested 18- year-old christian moran and 20- year-old alexis deleon. police say both men are from san rafael and face attempted murder charges. they believe both men were involved in the shooting but have not said how. state records show a san leandro metal recycling company where a propane tank exploded recently has been cited half a dozen times for safety scrirations. the -- violations. the tank exploded at the ail co company -- alcoa company. no one was hurt in last month's

accident seen here but we did show you the propane tank landed on top of a car crushing it. it's an ironic twist in a patent lawsuit. a tluge has threatened to -- a judge has threatened to ban cell phones from the courtroom. he says wi-fi unless from all of the phones are interfering with the network used for a realtime transcript of the case. there have been interruptions from ringing phones. some people have been taking photos which is a violation of court rules. 7:56. the city of oakland is considering installing new safety barriers for bicyclists on telegraph avenue. but some drivers don't like it at all. the plan by oakland city officials would install the barriers sep vateing bicycles from cars on telegraph avenue between 20th to 57th street. but adding the barriers would mean losing a lane of traffic on some parts of that very busy

road. >> too much congestion. it would be too slow. this is the main street. >> some other east bay cities are also taking steps to better protect bicyclists. in alameda, they are installing barriers on shore line drive. berkeley and walnut creek also considering adding safety barriers. 7:57. we're following a horrifying campus attack this morning at a pennsylvania high school. at least 20 people have been hurt. new information on the extent of those injuries. we're live in san jose where police are trying to crack down information on a hit- and-run accident. they need your help. we'll tell you about the new lead we learned about this morning. a deadly crash in alameda. find out what happened on a major road and how long this road is going to be blocked. temperatures yesterday way above average in fact almost 20

good morning. this is a gruesome sight. this accident claimed the life of a woman in her 60s. sal has the details. we'll have more in just a second. this is a developing news story. stay tuned for that. it's wednesday morning. april 9th. i'm dave clark. a quick look at weather and traffic. fog is back. >> no doubt about it. fog, low clouds. forestville 50 degrees. some patchy fog and nancy in pescy, that's pescadero said 50. you get a break but then you get clouds on the sierra. something not often seen. i just posted that on my facebook. fog is on the increase here over the next few days. probably an assortment of high clouds. there is a low that's tracking

towards southern central california. that will give us more of a breeze. 50s or 40s on the temperatures. yesterday we were running warmer than that. the delta breeze, the sea breeze has picked up. that will cool off inland areas. it will still be sunny for some. not as warm as yesterday. look for a cooler pattern. the warmest day was monday. on the coast, today all of the temperatures dropped off. we're working on a deadly crash letting us know that otis drive is going to remain closed as a minivan hit and killed a woman who was crossing the street. the woman said to be a 64-year- old alameda resident who was crossing the street near the south shores center. that's the van in question. the driver of the van has stopped and is cooperating with police. but otis drive will remain shut down until they complete the

investigation. it could be a while lodger. you can see police are on the scene. if you are trying to get to this shopping mall. you will have to use one of the other ways around there. there are several ways to approach it. the stores don't open a while longer. most of them anyway. you will see a little bit of a delay in this area. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's backed up for a 30-minute drive time into san francisco. we had an earlier crash on the upper deck of the bay bridge that's cleared. it was a minor one. it caused delayed traffic. traffic is going to be okay. we're getting word of a crash on eastbound highway 92 on sky line. i want to push in here. it's being called a sig-alert. east 92 at sky line. the big rig overturned here. and will be causing major delays. if you are trying to get out of half moon bay. 92 would not be the way. do pacifica or use woodside road or highway 84. don't use this. we'll get more on this coming

up. back to the desk. police in san jose are investigating a deadly hit-and- run accident. it happened shortly before 2:00 this morning on the capitol expressway near seven trees boulevard. janine de la vega has been following this story since 4:30 this morning. and joins us live with new information about the car police are now looking for. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. police tell me they don't have many leads in this case but from what they gathered at the scene, they believe the suspect vehicle is a 1998 to 2000 sedan. they don't know the color but they say there's possible windshield damage. that's pretty vague description. they are looking over their evidence to see what else they can determine. just before 2:00 a.m., those 911 calls started coming in from people who were driving in the area who spotted a man down in the eastbound lanes of capitol expressway near seven trees. officers arrived and he was pronounced dead at the scene. they were able to determine that he was hit by a car while

walking but the driver did leave the scene. investigators did a canvass of the neighborhood, searching for anybody who may have witnessed the accident. there's not a crosswalk where the man was hit. it's also poorly lit when it's dark. homeless people say they see a lot of jaywalkers. >> the homeless people, they don't use the crosswalks. they will just run across the street. and no, i go to the crosswalk. i don't want to get hit. police do not know if the victim was homeless. they did tell me that he is an african-american man who is in his -- was in his 20s. if you have any information on this case, call police. investigators say again they did find debris in the road where the accident happened but they are still trying to figure out the exact make and model of the car. they do need help. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we have more details about people killed in cars. according to research compiled

by the san jose mercury news. these types of deaths are increasing. in 2013, 26 people were hit and killed by cars. the most in 16 years and the most in the entire bay area. in san francisco, there was 17 pedestrian deaths. in oakland, there were seven pedestrian deaths last year. san jose officials say the city is taking steps to make it safer for people walking the streets. there are 32 recently completed safety projects or projects still being developed. >> we're continuing to follow developing news of a mass stabbing a few hours ago at a high school. this is near pittsburgh, pennsylvania. hospital officials have just held a news conference. we've learned that 20 people were hurt. at least 19 are students. the 20th is an adult security guard. seven students have life- threatening stab wounds. this happened just 15 minutes after school started at franklin regional high school

in mireesville. again -- murrysville. again, this is near pittsburgh, pennsylvania. police say the attacker is a 16- year-old sophomore at the school who has been taken into custody and is being questioned. a male student. officers also say not all of the students were stabbed. all of the 19 who were hurt. some were hurt when they were knocked down while trying to run from the attacker. we're monitoring this quickly- developing story. and pam cook will be back with an update at 8:30. a san francisco supervisor is behind the latest push for police officers to wear body cameras. it comes in response to last month's deadly police shooting of a city college student at bernal heights park. supervisor john avaloss calling for a hearing to explore the cost and benefits of providing body cameras to the entire police force. he says the cameras could help restore the trust between police and the public. greg suhr recently rolled out a

grant-funded test program to appoint 50 officers with those cameras. a man from oakland faces a possible six months in jail after being accused of defrauding california's recycling prob program. they say he transported 1800 pounds of aluminum cans from washington state to california to be redeemed. washington state doesn't charge a tax on recyclable beverage containers. he entered a plea of no contest to the charges. he's due to be sentenced later today. recycling fraud has long been a problem in california. the justice department i ises the recycling fund is defrauded of $40 million every year. the state is taking measures to curb fraud by cutting down the number of containers an individual can cash in every day. recycling center workers will also go through training. there's growing concern this morning about a dangerous computer bug that may be

exposing personal information for millions of users. alex savidge is live this morning to explain how the so- called heart bleed bug could put you a risk. good morning, alex. >> good morning to you. computer experts say this is one of the most serious security flaws uncovered in recent years. a lot of popular websites like google, amazon and facebook are working on fixes right now. you probably noticed this, the web across that often begins with https, well, the s is supposed to stand for secure. it does stand for secure but it turns out that hackers in many cases have been able to bypass encryption software with this so-called bug. it's possible up to twof thirds of all website -- two-thirds of all websites have been impacted. it was discovered by a company in finland. hackers can potentially access things like pass woerds and credit card information -- pass woerds and credit card --

passwords and credit card information without people noticing. this has been in existence for the past two years but was just discovered. some people in the city say it's truly a mistake to think your information is truly safe online. >> hackers can figure out a way to information or anything at this point. more and more people get the skills, i think electronicically, it would be very -- >> reporter: there's conflicting information about what users should be doing in response to this bug. some websites are urging their users to create a new password. there are security experts say that's not necessarily a good idea because that means

8:13. there is a break involving an alleged theft at a san francisco coffee shop. police say the suspected crime was caught by a security camera. police have now taken a person into custody into connection to the case. the surveillance video shows someone wearing a bean my and striped shirt in a coffee shop at post and taylor streets. a customer said she left her laptop and cell phone for a moment on friday. police say the person in the striped shirt then grabbed those items and left. the surveillance video was distributed. it went viral. the victim spoke about the arrest on the channel 2 program "right this minute." >> this same person walking down the street and she follows her into a starbucks coffee house. >> police have identified the suspect as 32-year-old, a

transgender person, reynal. been booked on a number of charges. the laptop has not been recovered. after a berkeley police officer was attacked, there are new calls to give stun guns to police officers. on monday, the police officer responded to a disturbance call at aquatic park. when the police approached the man he punched the officer to the ground knocked him to the ground and punched him in the face. the officer was unconscious briefly but when he woke up, the man was trying to take his gun. >> yeah, he had been hit multiple times in the face and head. kicked multiple times. so it was -- was an extremely brutal attack. >> 44-year-old carlos alberto della garza was arrested for attempted hges and felony battery. the investigation continues. the berkeley police association says that incident could have possibly been avoided if the police officer had a stun gun. berkeley city council may debate the issue again in a a

couple of weeks. while oakland police acknowledge there's room for improvement, they say crime is down 15% in the city compared to the same period last year. last night, the city's interim police chief and five area commanders released their findings at a public safety meeting at oakland tech high school. police say the number of homicides is up but the number of gun assaults rapes, robberies and burglaries has dropped. >> the trends that began last summer of a reduction in shootings, robberies, burglaries have continued through the first quarter of this year. >> each commander outlines specific problems in their areas. for example, street racing is a big issue in west oakland and downtown. jack london square is a common area for car break-ins. prostitution is a problem along spwsht boulevard. gun violence by gangs and street robberies such as stealing cell phones, cash and jewelry and from people walking on sidewalks are some of the

biggest issues in east oakland. east bay m.u.d. water users may not face further water restrictions. the contra costa times reports there may be enough water in district reservoirs to make it through the summer and fall without mandatory rationing. voluntary cutbacks have brought water usage down 11%. east bay m.u.d.'s board of directors may make a final decision on water rationing later this month. if you drive a toyota, you may be affected by a new recall. toyota announced it's recalling almost 6.4 million vehicles. the problems range from steering problems that could keep the air bag from deploying to the driver's seat automatically sliding forward in a crash. now, toyota claims it doesn't know of any crashes or injuries related to these glitches. the problems were found in 27 toyota models including the

rav4, the corolla, the yaris and the highlander. this is the second biggest recall for the world's biggest automaker. it happened days ago in san francisco. now a smart car has been tipped over in ohio. a tow truck was brought in to upright the car. it was found on its side near the ohio state university campus in columbus. police say vandals tried to tip over a second smart car but failed. on monday, four smart cars were found tipped over in two san francisco neighborhoods. we showed you some of those scenes right here on "mornings on 2." 8:18. let's bring sal back. you are busy and you got a whole team working on this deadly crash that happened. >> we do, as a matter of fact in alameda dave and tori on otis drive. right in front of the southshore center near park street. a woman was killed earlier this morning. she was crossing the street hit by a minivan and now the

investigation continues. that minivan is the one that was involved in the deadly crash. the person driving the minivan stayed on the scene and is cooperating with police investigators but otis drive is still closed and should be for a while. you can see it doesn't look like they are anywhere picking it up. some of the woman's personal belongings are still in the street. if you are trying to get to the southshore center, you will be delayed in the area. let's take a look at the commute on 92. it's a mess because of a big rig that flipped over. 92 at upper skyline. if you are trying to get out of half moon bay, i don't think 92 is the way. might want to use highway 1 through pacifica. right now there is a big delay this area. it's a sig-alert. the chp thinks it will be there for a while. the bay bridge toll plaza, still a 30-minute drive time between oakland and san francisco. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. very good morning. some fog.

welcome back. 8:24. a front runner in the race to be san jose's next mayor is facing allegations that he violated campaign finance rules. sam is a city councilmember but opponents for his bid for mayor said he's held fund-raisers outside of the time limits for raising contributions. a complaint has been filed. liccardo's campaign gave is a statement that says this kient of friv lige -- kind of frivolous complaint has been the norm, sadly, in campaigns. this video of a woman stealing a package from outside of a home helped police find the stolen items and the suspect. between 2012 and 2013, police say there was a 27% drop in

home burglaries and the spread of cameras is part of the reason why. it's great evidence and prosecutors love that evidence because it's hard to argue seeing a video of that person doing that crime. >> last night police hosted a workshop teaching people in the warm springs district how to set up a surveillance network. they told the people to take video or photos. that's another good way to capture anything suspicious in their neighborhood. 8:26. a man in in marin county has his 9-year-old son to thank for being alive. bodie and his dad were snowmobiling in tahoe two days ago when bodie's dad crashed. his leg was trapped under the snowmobile and he was buried under the snow. so he sent his son to get help. he hopped on the snowmobile and sent his son to help find someone. >> i saw these people who tore people around on snowmobiles. they had a walkie-talkie and

out of half moon bay, i would not use eastbound 92 there's an overturned truck doing one-way traffic control and driving over the hill to 280 will be a huge delay. both directions really because they are doing one-way traffic control in the area. looking at the commute on 880 northbound, it's beginning to get very slow as you pass the coliseum and head up to downtown oakland. drive time at the bay bridge is up now. it's about a 30, 35-minute delay. i got a tweet from casey who drives and said he saw -- actually, i don't know if he drives. he may be a passenger. saw a stalled midspan. san francisco side. that's on the west deck west of treasure island. let's go back to the desk. back to the developing news from pennsylvania. we've been following this for you all morning long. 20 people, 19 of whom are teenaged students, were hurt this morning in one of the

worst mass stabbings in american history. it happened 7:00 this morning eastern time at a high school about 15 miles east of pittsburgh, pennsylvania. many of the victims were stabbed in the stomach. now, police have taken a 16- year-old boy into custody. ktvu's pam cook has been on this story all morning watching all of the video listening to two separate news conferences. pam is in the newsroom with new information about the suspect and also what someone at the school did that probably saved a lot of lives. >> it's remarkable. police describing the very chaotic and violent scene that happened just as kids were getting to class this morning. the police chief of mireesville, pennsylvania said a 16-year-old student at the high school walked into one of the hallways, flashing two knives. 19 students were hurt. most of them stabbed. some injured while trying to run from the scene. now, the chief and fellow officers arrived on campus quickly to find the principal

and a campus security guard holding a student in handcuffs. the security guard among the injured with stab wounds to his stomach. one student pulled the fire alarm during the chaos and the chief says that was the right thing to do. >> first thing you want the students to do is to run. upon my arrival and the arrival of the other officers that's what we saw. we saw a chaotic scene outside with people running everywhere. the fire alarm being pulled probably assisted with evacuating the school. and that was a good thing that was done. >> the update from the hospital says seven teenagers are listed with serious, life-threatening injuries. at least two have already gone into surgery. there are also reports that one student applied pressure to one of her friend's wounds and doctors say she could be credited with saving that friend's live. but again, we've just received an update of the adult injured in the attack.

a hospital spokesman says the adult believed to be that security guard suffered superficial wound and was discharged from the hospital. sounding like that security guard helped detain the 16-year- old suspect. we will continue to follow this story. there are updates coming in from the hospital and from that high school which is now a crime scene. we'll have more throughout the day here on ktvu channel 2 and also at ktvu.com. reporting live from the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, pam. more details now. mass stabbings, they are more common overseas but there have been a couple of -- been a couple of here. in houston, someone stabbed and injured 14 people. last september one student was killed three others were hurt at a high school in springs, texas. that's also near houston. new this morning, in san jose, a fire heavily damaged the house. it happened about 2:00 this

morning on madely drive near the -- medley drive near will the east capitol expressway. brian flores outthere outside of the home. firefighters think they know how and where this started. >> pretty extensive damage. the san jose fire department has here checking for any hot spots as you saw earlier this morning. but they left about 45 minutes ago. a contractor was also here to possibly fix the hole. they put up a green fence since then around the property to make shaur others don't come into it. the fire likely started in the garage just after 2:00. still unclear how officially it started. an investigator was here to determine that. it was believed to be electrical or gas leak. speaking with firefighters five people a live at the home. firefighters say it's two couples and and 8-year-old child. they woke up after hearing loud pops from the fire. they quickly evacuated and were

not injured. overall, about 23 firefighters were here fighting this fire. making sure it didn't spread to neighbors homes. fire crews had a tough time battling this one. they had to break down the garage door to get a fire line in. they also attacked it from the roof. they set up a water curtain to homes next to it. so that the fire didn't spread, cause any more damage. it took about 45 minutes to put it out. there were no jrt to report. a portion of the roof has collapsed on top of the suv. that's parked inside the garage. so investigators will be taking a look at that. in terms of the family that lived here, they were helped out by the red cross. they are currently living -- or staying at a nearby hotel this morning. they are expected to be okay. we're live here in san jose, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose fire investigators say a big fire on monday that damaged three homes, it was not an arson fire. people came back yesterday to see what's left of the homes on los brooks circle. investigators are still trying to fick out what sparked the

flames but they think it was an accident. firefighters say the open design of these homes made it easier for the flames to spread. police in richmond investigating the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy. his body was found last night at fleming avenue and l street. he was found in the driveway of an apartment complebltion. now -- complex. police were alerted by a shot spotter and 911 calls. they are searching for a woman who police say had a relationship with the victim. they are looking for a 1999 lexus four-door sedan with tinted windows. it has a california license plate of 5 rld 637. 8:38. some people in santa clara are angry about what he they call a mini dorm being built in their community. they live in an historic neighborhood on park avenue that's lined with single family homes built in the 1930s. the neighbors believe one of the homes is being remodeled to

turn it into housing for students at nearby santa clara university. people who live near the construction zone say work started without any notice. they say the two bedroom, one back home is being turned into a mini dorm with six bedrooms and three bathrooms. >> the noise, the litter, the red cups that certain areas around here are known for. we're gonna be victimized by that. neighbors tell ktvu they found an ad on a website trying to rent out the home for $8,000. that ad has now been taken down. the neighbors have taken their concerns to the santa clara city council. the city council says it will put up the issue -- put the issue on the agenda for its meeting on april 22nd. an app is being developed that could tell you how many calories are in your food just by taking a picture. it works by using image recognition to scan the photo and analyze the different components of your meal. the app is being developed by sri international.

tara? >> reporter: there has been a rash of burglaries just up the hill from here. so he says the fact that the robberies are happening is not surprising. however, he does say that he is surprised by the manner in which the roners are carrying out -- robbers are carrying out the attacks with a kitchen knife and a hammer. in the men's restroom, a man was robbed monday night artwo men flashed a hammer at him and demanded his belongings. this area is called commodore park. this happened near the youtube and walmart offices. the victim says a man holding a silver kitchen knife demanded his laptop computer, took it and ran off toward a nearby apartment complex. about three hours later, the victim was targeted and the third time was tuesday night in the same area, two men with a kitchen knife demanding a man's

wallet and cell phone and running off towards the same apartments. what do you think about the weapons being used? >> there is scary. there is a playground. there's kids playing here. it gents kind of scary. it's desperate people and no telling what can happen. >> reporter: the suspects are described as latino men, one 25 to 30 years old. 5'10" wearing a black trench coat. the other in his late 20s, 5'8" with a thin mistaush. he had a black backpack and wore a black cool cap. back to you. >> thank you. new optimism in the search for the missing malaysia airlines flight. there were two pings detected. these fresh signals are in the

same general area where two earlier pings were picked up on saturday. all of the signals are within 17 miles of each other. these new pings have australian authorities more optimistic than ever that they will find the wreckage of flight 370 possibly in a matter of days. but they add the pings are getting weaker. meaning searchers are either moving away from whatever is making those sounds or the batteries from the plane's black boxes are running out. the two new signals lasted five and a half minutes and seven minutes. >> i'm now optimistic that we will find the aircraft or what is left of the aircraft in the not too distant future. >> some marine life makes things sound similar, they say most likely this came from some type of electronic equipment like a flight data recorder. >> very interesting, tori.

toll plaza, someone asked me why is it slow? we had a minor accident westbound. and now traffic at the toll plaza is really terrible. someone e-mailed me saying it's taking forever to get on west grand. if you are trying to get to the bay bridge, give yourself extra time. this is 45 minutes into san francisco. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. a very good cloudy morning for most. not for all. some breaks in the clouds. sunny, but probably a little breeze here. the old sea breeze has kicked in. typical clouds. might be a couple of popup thundershowers. a little low is approaching. that's already beginning to enhance the fog bank. san francisco which was officially 80 on monday. 75 yesterday. 66 today. there will be other areas in rich -- inner richmond, outer richmond. it will be cooler than that. it will still be sunny for some. just not as warm as yesterday. the low cloud deck beginning to enhance. the low is on its way.

shoulder and i could -- coy feel the blood was -- i could feel the plood was running down on me. >> pistorius admitting to shooter her in his home last year but he said he mistook his girlfriend for an intree udder -- intruder. pis another just has -- pistorius has broken down several times on the stand. 22-year-old derek gordon came out publicly this morning. he said a keen moment for coming out was when jason collins came outs the first nba openly gay player. he said said his teammates support him and feels like a huge weight has been lifted off his shoulders. a metal recycling company where a propane tank exploded has been cited half a dozen times for safety violations. the tank exploded on march 28th at the alco metal and iron company.

the bay area news group reports past violations including failing to train employees on machinery and unlabeled emergency shutoff buttons that led to a worker losing several fingers. no one was hurt in last month's accident. but the propane tank did land on top of a car crushing it. the city of oakland may install new safety barriers for bicyclists on telegraph avenue. some drivers they don't like it. oakland city officials may install the barriers separating bikes from cars on telegraph avenue between 20th to 57th street. but adding those barriers could mean losing a lane of traffic on some parts of telegraph. too much congestion of traffic. it would be too slow. >> other cities are taking steps to better protect bicyclists. meam, they are installing barriers on shore line drive. berkeley and walnut creek also considering adding safety barriers. a new parking program
