good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. topping our news, a 16-year-old sophomore went on a stabbing rampage this morning at a high school east of pittsburgh, pennsylvania, leaving 20 people injured. seven of them critically. rob roth has been following this story and joins us from the newsroom. what are you hearing? >> chaos and panic. that's how the police chief of murrysville, pennsylvania describes what he saw as he arrived at franklin regional high school just after 7:00 eastern time this morning. students ran from the building when it pulled a fire alarm to get the other teenagers to evacuate. witnesses say the attacker was walking down the hall with two knives apparently slashing and stabbing others at random. >> there was blood all over the floor. i thought maybe somebody had a nose bleed. someone yelled, she got stabbed. >> my one friend got cut across the face. she was bleeding. >> the one friend got stabbed in the back. my one friend's brother.

he got tackled to the ground and they stabbed him several times. i don't know how he's doing. >> reporter: police say the principal and a security guard tackled and handcuffed a knife- wielding young man. he's are not releasing his name because he's a minor. the security guard was stabbed in the scuffle. paramedics rushed the injured to the hospital. >> they were all knife wounds. most of them were to the lower abdomen. and they seem to actually almost have a pattern. most of them were to the right lower abdomen and the flight frank. >> reporter: two of the injured were in late surgery as of this morningle. all are expected to describe. students describe the suspect as shy but didn't know if he was bullied. >> and for more information, go to ktvu.com. we have raw video of the latest news conference about the stabbing. coming up in 15 minutes we'll have a live report from the scene. a major street in alameda

is back open at this hour after a person crossing the street cross hit and killed this morning. it happened on otis drive right across the street from the alameda southshore center. ktvu's brian flores is live there now with the new information we're learning about the victim. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. well, the victim has yet to be identified but alameda police say that she is a 64-year-old woman from her here in alameda. she was trying to cross this street, otis drive, right where the arrows are but the impact left her about ten yards away. you see the spray paint on otis drive as well. we talk about distracted drivers. authorities believe it might have been the victim in this case who was distracted. this all happened before 5:00 a.m. on otis between park street and women low near the safeway gas station here in alameda. police say the woman was trying to cross the street walking toward the mall when she was hit by a minivan traveling eastbound on otis. she was not in a crosswalk. two men in the minivan stopped and tried to help her but she

died. they were cooperating with police, they were questioned an released. police are looking into weather the victim was too distracted to notice her surroundings. >> she was wearing dark clothes and attempting to cross the roadway. it appears, you know, we're right in the middle of our safety campaign. one of the things we always stress to each other, if you are gonna be in the roadway always be aware. it appears she had ear bugs in her ears. maybe she was unaware and maybe didn't hear but here's still investigating and haven't determined that yet. >> reporter: police are looking at surveillance video from the mall. they talked with several witnesses as well. some people who walk or visit southshore center say they've seen too many close calls involving drivers and pedestrians. >> a lot of pedestrians. they take dangerous chances crossing the street. i don't know why they do that. but sometimes the elderly is not thinking. >> reporter: it remains unclear this afternoon if the woman was on her way to work or just out

for a walk. several residents we spoke with say there was a similar fatal pedestrian accident around the same block and around the same time last year. otis drive was closed for several hours. but reopened around 10:10 this morning. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a family stranded in the pacific ocean with a sick toddler is back on dry land today after a lift from a navy warship. the couple and their 1 and 3- year-old daughter were in the midst of an around the world trip when their sailboat broke down 900 miles from mexico. the couple called for help when their 1-year-old got sick. they were rescued with assistance from the california air national guard, the navy and the coast guard. a house fire that started in a garage has forced four adults and a child into a hotel for the time being. the fire started just after 2:00 a.m. at a home in the 1200 block of medley court. firefighters contained the fire to the garage. they say it caused a lot of

damage to the garage and smoke damage to the home. but it can be fixed. a brand-new suv inside the garage was destroyed. fire investigators are still looking for the cause. there's growing concern about a dangerous computer bug that may be exposing the personal information of millions of people. ktvu's alex savidge explains how the so-called heartbleed bug could put you at risk. >> computer experts call this one of the most serious security flaws in recent years. hackers appear to have bypassed encryption software used by about two-thirds of the world's websites. that means if you do business on those sites your information may have been exposed. >> the vulnerability is so serious that if you know how to exploit it, you can get at users' password, credit card numbers if you were doing financial transactions on a site that used hope ssl. >> reporter: a number of websites use what's called open

ssl to hide your personal information as it moves around the internet. a number of businesses are now scrambling to upgrade their security software. that includes sites like facebook and yahoo which are putting fixes in place. >> it seems like the web community is working quickly to patch it. but for right now, check with your site. >> reporter: heartbleed was recently discovered by a security firm in finland working with google. what's troubling, it may have existed for many years before anyone realized. many users we talked to are concerned and plan to use caution on the web. >> definitely makes you worry. there's a lot of things that can happen between -- anything from personal security on your personal financing side. >> hackers can figure their way around anything. more and more people are getting the skills and electronically they would be knowledgeable. >> reporter: experts say it's unclear how the heartbleed bug originated. there's conflicting advice on

what you should do to protect yourselves. some are urging to -- some experts are urging you to change your password but others say that's not a good idea because that means logging on to sites and putting your information at risk again. a memorial service is happening right now in texas to remember the soldiers killed last wednesday during a mass shooting. this is a live look at the ceremony where you can see president obama is there speaking in his role at chief comforter, once again. he and first lady michelle obama are mourning the families. army private ivan lopez killed three soldiers and wounded 16 others before taking his own life. president obama made the same grim trip in 2009 after army major nidal hasan killed 13 people on that base. san bruno police are stepping up patrols in a neighborhood where robbers struck three times in just over 24 hours.

the first happened about 5:30 monday evening near the youtube and walmart corporate offices. the victim says a man holding a kitchen knife took his laptop computer and ran toward a nearby apartment complex. about three hours later, a man in a park restroom was robbed by two men with a hammer. last night, two men with a kitchen knife demanded a man's wallet and cell phone and then ran toward the same apartments. the robberies all happened off cherry avenue near commodore park. >> what do you think about the weapons being used? >> that's a little scary. there is a municipal playground. kids play in here. families come in. it's. it gets kind of scary. it's desperate people. no telling what could happen. >> the suspects are described as latino men, one between 25 and 30 years old, 5'10", skinny and bear wearing a black trench coat. the other in his late 20s, 5'8", thin with a thick mustache. he wore a black wool cap and

had a black backpack. the search is on for a driver who hit and killed a man in the south bay and then sped off. what we're now learning about the victim. it's another day of warm temperatures inland and in some areas, maybe even hitting the low 80s but mark tamayo will be here about the cooler temperatures in the forecast. we're continuing to follow the developing news of the mass stabbing in pennsylvania. after the break we'll have a live report from the scene. back now to our developing story on the school stabbing in pennsylvania -- lisa sylvester is on the scene and joins us live. lisa, have you learned anything new about the 16-year-old accused of stabbing his schoolmates? >> reporter: we actually do have some new information on that 16-year-old. we know he will be facing 20 charges of aggravated assault. they are filing these charges as a juvenile. he's 16. but in all likelihood, very, very high likelihood they will be prosecuting him eventually as an adult. he's not, our sources say, he's not cooperating with police. he's not spoken to them. we know that the family has hired an attorney. >> what about the condition of the injured? any update on that? >> reporter: well, there were

total of 20 people. 19 of them students. one of them a faculty member. of those 20 individuals, six of them are in critical condition or in the operating room. so still very significant. in fact, one of the victims was stabbed about a millimeter away, a couple of himly meters away from his heart -- millie meters away from his -- millimeters away from his heart. ese still still alive. at this point, authorities do believe all students will survive. >> what can you tell us about the community where this happened? what is this area like? >> reporter: well, murrysville, pennsylvania is a great area. it's in wed county -- in westmoreland county. middle-class area, middle-class homes. this particular area of westmoreland is actually one of the more affluent areas. this school has a great reputation where parents want their kids to go to school

which is all the more reason why people were caught offguard and surprised by all of this. >> have officials decided whether school will be held tomorrow or not? >> reporter: there is an elementary school nearby. that school will have classes. there sh a middle school that's adjacent to the high school. that will be open. but they say it will be perhaps, tleet, four days before the high school reopens in part because we're being told inside was quite a bloody scene and they have to go in and scrub the place down and clean it up. >> all right. lisa silver ster, thank you so much. police are searching for a man who kit a -- who hit a man and drove away. janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: the accident happened here on capitol expressway near seven trees. this is a heavily traveled thoroughfare during the commute hours. this accident happened at 2:00

a.m. when not a lot of people were around. that's move proving to be challenging for police. all lanes of capitol expressway were closed for five hours as officers searched for clues after a man was hit here. upon arrival officers did locate an adult male who was deceased and the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: that man has been identified as the coroner as 26- year-old daniel campbell of san jose. police don't know where he was going or why he was there at that hour in the morning. people driving in the area near seven trees spotted campbell on the ground and called police. there was no sign of the car that hit him. >> a whole lot of police. they were everywhere and they had spotlights on the car and they were shining the car -- i guess they were looking for the car who hit the people. >> reporter: officers spent the morning canvassing the area looking for witnesses. the traffic investigation unit collected evidence to piece together how fast the car was traveling. debris was found in the road.

after inspecting it, they believe the suspect car is a 1998 to 2000 sedan with possible windshield damage. the color of the car is unknown. there's no crosswalk where the man was hit and it is poorly lit when it's dark. people in the area say they often see jaywalkers. >> it doesn't surprise me. i know a lot of friends who do the same thing. they will run across the street. some of these people are crazy drivers. >> reporter: police don't have many leads on this case. if you have any information you are asked to please call san jose police. you can do so anonymously. this is the eighth traffic fatality this year so far. there were also eight last year at this same time. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. more details about people killed by cars in san jose. according to research, compied by the san jose mercury news, these types of deaths are increasing. in 2013, 26 people were hit and

killed by cars. the most in 16 years and the most in the entire bay area. in san francisco, there were 17 pedestrian deaths. in oakland, there were seven pedestrian deaths last year. san jose officials say the city is taking steps to make it safer for people walking the streets. there are 32 recently completed safety projects or projects still being developed. richmond police are investigating the deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy. it happened last night at fleming avenue and l street. police found the teen in the driveway of an apartment complex. now investigators are looking into reports of a fight and want to talk to a woman who had a relationship with a victim. they are also looking for a 1999 lexus four-door sedan with tinted windows. it has a license plate from california of 5 rld 637. a local lawmaker today is showing just how relevant

terrorist threats are to the bay area. at a house homeland security hearing, east bay congressman smallman displayed al qaeda's magazine inspire. the most recent picture, someone sitting on a tram and a message that encourages terrorists to pack their tools of destruction and assemble their bomb for detonation. >> thousands of passengers a day use the tram to connect from our b.a.r.t. system to the airport. >> it's clear that there is a threat and we need to really be aware of it and to do everything we can as a nation to stop it. >> at this morning's hearing, lawmakers were examining what officials learned from the boston marathon bombing a year ago. they also discussed what can be done to prevent a similar terrorist attack in the future. it looks like a summertime weather pattern. we have some haze out there looking out towards san jose. we still have a big temperature

range today from the upper 50s from the beaches inland, still talking about lower 80s. san jose will be in between the range. fairly pleasant this afternoon. we're thinking some 70s. on the satellite as you can see, the low clouds and fog from monterey bay closer to santa cruz here is a closer inspection of that fog bank towards ocean beach and pacifica and half moon bay as well. the fog increased in coverage overnight. in fact if you are out near the bay, you probably noticed the fog pushing around the golden gate bridge. current temperatures updated for the 12:00 hour, the warm temperatures, 76 in antioch. walnut creek in the 70s. santa rosa checking in at 60. but san francisco only the upper 50s. san jose 66 degrees. we have more of an onshore breeze with fairfield winds out of the southwest right around 14 miles an hour. this will actually strengthen a bit overnight. as a result we're gonna cool things off more for your thursday. wind speeds on this map, not too strong out there. half moon bay winds out of the northwest right around 10 miles an hour. for today, we do have this --

patchy coastal fog, warm thumbs inland. here is a live camera looking out towards san francisco bay. there's the bay bridge and calm conditions on the bay waters. a few high clouds paying us a visit right now. tomorrow, morning fog will be cooler out there. the weekend, morning drizzle first thing on saturday and then a sun/cloud mix with no big temperature swings over the next few days. what developed yesterday, a shallow marine layer. it's kind of been expanding a little bit over the last 12 hours. that will garage lieuly import -- gradually import that air. not by much. it will shave off a few degrees each day for thursday and friday. you can see the high clouds over central and southern california. there is a circulation out here in the pacific. this will be approaching the coastline by friday night into saturday. that will be the source of more cloud cover and driz. this afternoon, 4:00, still some patchy coastal nothing. a few high clouds. low clouds and fog regrouping, first thing in the morning to start out our yours morning and skies become partly sunny but

following the latest of the federal reserve minutes, stocks helped by surprisingly strong earnings from alcoa as it kicks off the latest earnings seasons. taking a live look at the big board -- there is another car recall to tell you about. this time it's from toyota. today's newly-announced recall involves nearly 6.4 million vehicles worldwide. the issues range from steering problems that could keep the air bag from deploying to
