. we have just found out there's a car into the water, just south of candlestick park here, right here just before candle stock. it looks like several people have stopped to help this man whose car was in the water. it's an elderly male. the fire department is on the way and traffic has come to a stop here coming up, northbound 101 just before candlestick park. traffic is backed up to south city because of this incident. the fire department is not there, neither is chp, this is all reported. this is a serious incident. if you want to avoid the whole

patrolling the waters from the golden gate bridge down to the area. what they were going to do at daybreak, they were going to send out a helicopter or a small boat. it's pretty foggy. i think they'll send a small boat and call off the helicopter at least for right now. enjoying me right now is kevin smith, he's with the fire department. he's going to let us know where things stand. i know you guys have a presence at the beach. >> yes, we do. we're starting our search north of ocean beach trying to see if the kid may be hopefully, may still be alive or something and may be washed up at a beach somewhere. we'll continue our search and move on down the coast and see if we can find him. >> what happened yesterday, you got this call around 4:00 in fortunate afternoon. >> that's correct. a family came to visit the beach approximately the east bay and kids were wading in the water, a 14 or 15-year-old. they got caught in a rip

current which are dangerous here. and the father went in to get him out. he got in trouble too as well. and a local surfer, and one of our firefighters was able to assist the nephew out of the water and he was able to pull the father out of the water and where our units did cpr and revived him and transported him to the hospital. >> you must be proud of the captain's son there. >> he's a real hero. but, for him he saved those people's lives. we're proud of him. >> thank you for joining us. we appreciate the update. we'll keep you posted as far as what happens with the coast guard. we'll be in contact with them to find out when they're sending out that live boat. 7:06, more details now on rip currents.

they're very prevalent along the west coast including the beaches of northern california. if fact, in fact, they can move 8 feet per second. that's faster than an olympic swimmer. it's estimated that 100 people a year are killed by rip currents. if you get caught in a rip current, lifeguards recommend you do the following: this could save your life. don't fight it. you'll get tired and more trouble. swim parallel to shore and then back to land at an angle. if you cannot escape, calmly tread water. it will fade, when it does fade, wave your arms and yell for help. do not try to rescue them but get a lifeguard or call 911. caltrans crews finished the emergency pothole repairs on the bay bridge.

the potholes where on the westbound lanes, but some of the eastbound lanes had to be closed too. that caused a giant traffic jam. my car was right in there somewhere stuck for hours trying to get on to the lower deck. three of the eastbound lanes were closed as well as two westbound lanes and it was a mess. the emergency repairs started at 7 last night, it didn't wrap up until after midnight. closures backed up from here to china, it was for miles for several hours. people are using a new tool to solve crimes. and they're reaching out to the public. they're launching this effort because this week happens to be a national crime victims rights week. we're joined live from san jose to tell us whatment da's office is doing. >> reporter: prosecutors need help solving cold cases.

. it is 7:14, more information is coming out about the 16-year-old high schooler accused of attacking fellow students. a former classmate says the suspect alex hribal may have snapped after being bullied, he was teased relentlessly. the high school is chosed today. >> good morning, of the 20 students here injured at this high school, ten remain hospitalized and four are still in critical condition. police say they have begun the investigation into why 16- year-old alex hribal allegedly stabbed 20 fellow teens and a security officer in a crowded hallway of his school outside of pittsburgh. >> the process, complete with that, continuing the investigation, they're conducting interviews of the

victim and witnesses. >> reporter: in an interview his attorney said he was a well liked student and not a loaner. >> i don't believe that's true that he was bullied. we're going to try to figure out what happened here. obviously, there's a problem, you just don't leave and go to school and do what he did yesterday. >> reporter: nearly 2 dozen people were stabbed and slashed in yesterday's attack. the scene was described chaotic. >> the kid ran down the hall with the knife, my best friend got stabbed in the back. i held his hand and he wouldn't let go the whole way to the hospital he didn't let go. >> he was arraigned and charged as an adult. he faces four counts of attempted homicide and 21 counts of aggravated assault and a charge of having weapon school ground. >> they've searched the home of

alex hribal and his parents computer as well. they're scouring these, now, for a possible motive. back to you. >> do investigators have any ideas about a possible motive? any leads at all? >> no loads at all. every detail is important here. what they're doing, they're painstakingly going to go through the computer, cell phones and see if there is anything that indicates a potential motive. there were those rumors and that speculation that he potentially might have been bullied, but that's something that his lawyer says he was unaware of, his family was not aware of. in the coming days they'll learn more about this troubled young child, it sounded like a troubled young child and what led him to do this. >> one injured student is being hailed as a hero. nate the posted a selfie of himself and you can see him pointing to his injured arm.

one girl said he put his hand up and saved his friend from being stabbed. another one pulled the fire alarm which sent students rushing out of school. school violence like in pennsylvania leads to security changes in other schools. there was a tour of the high school complex in richmond. technology is a big part of the security plan there. there are 120 surveillance cameras. >> we'ring being proactive and smart. anything can happen on any day. we have to be vigilant. >> they've seen violence in the past. 06 students forced the old high school into lock down. administrators say practice drills are a key way to teach students and teachers what to do in an emergency. they'll close down a charter

school because of a poor academic performance. the school board voted 4-1 last night not to remove the charter of ramp academy. they'll not appeal the decision. they'll close the school at the end of the year. the academic program opened up in 2009. it serves 138 at risk student. 1719, it could turn a dreamer. they're creating uber pitch. yesterday through the uber app, a few people requested a seven minute car ride where they pitched their google business idea. they spend 300 million a year investing startups. one was to search for what social activities to do. we're following a problem.

it sounds dangerous. the bay shore freeway in san francisco. >> reporter: that's right on the san mateo border. this is a look at northbound 101 coming up to candlestick park. a vehicle went into the water. several people saw the man inside the vehicle in distress. they stopped to help out. traffic is backed up out of south san francisco and into san francisco. southbound 101 because you can get a view of the activity near the candlestick park area, it's slow. if you're trying to get to the airport don't use 101, use 280 and go around 380 onas an alternate route. 25 drive time into san francisco, it depends on which lane you're in. if you're in the carpool lane it's much less. also, in san jose, 280 is getting a work out and so is 85. we started off with trouble on northbound 101 near old

oakland, but 280 and 58 are slow going into the valley. no major crashes but slow. 7:20 let's go to steve. >> foggy for most, not nor all. there's a lot of low clouds, it's a cooler pattern, the lows are down as well. it's a couple of reports and drizzle, it's going to be on the increase just showing itself a low right there. it will continue our theme of a cooler pattern. it started yesterday in san francisco, and it will continue for much of the coast as well. 49 right now. cold, there will be others that won't break above 59 degrees. bundle up it will be cold breezy and the fall will be on the increase again. it looks like everything is setting up for a cool pattern here, upper 50s and low 60s for the next couple of days. concord is in there, a lot of 40s, santa rosa, napa airport has reduced visibility and fog. a combination of fog and low

clouds all helped along by that system right there. if it keeps going in that direction which will be over us i'll have to update that forecast. a lot more drizzle and fog will be on the increase. that low is heading south of us. we'll no more tomorrow is what we like to say. this is losing its grip. the fog is there, cool or cold by the coast, warm inland, but as we get towards friday and saturday, it will look like it will come into the 70s, a lot of it fog and local drizzle as well. a few areas in the clear. 60, 70s for most. we'll take shah out to vacaville as well. oakley one more day, livermore pleasanton, 77 in alamo and lafayette. 81 gilroy but after today everyone inland comes down into the 70s. 50s, 60s on the coast. low 70s for many.

. 7:25 we're learning more about a dramatic rescue of 121 hikers on the hawaiian island of kuwai, they made a trail impossible. it took rescuers two days to fly the hikers to safety.

children were stranded including a 18 month old baby and a little boy who was stranded on the rocks. they're taking care of a crocodile. it was captured wandering around a strip mall in roseville. it was bizarre for shoppers to see this. this is animal control capturing -- calm down -- it was a four foot long crocodile. it got out of a container that be was sent out of a reptile business with a note. it was a nile crocodile and call rescue. >> they can be up to 20 feet all and it's against the law to own them. >> this one is a really nasty crocodile. it has a bad attitude. >> the store is safety site.

those workers were stunned to get a crocodile. fish and wildlife said it will probably end up in a zoo. it is 7:26, a high school gym is off limits in dublin, the cookies the students aid for the -- ate for the rest of the week. the connection it has, this train, the connection that's raising concerns. we're looking at problems for the morning commute including slow traffic in the east bay and some unusual problems in the peninsula we'll run those down for you when we come back. we have pretty good fog out there, in fact, local drizzle, june or july problem, it looks like temperatures will be coming down. we'll show you how much.

. it is 7:30 once again, you're looking live ocean beach where a search is under way for a 14-year-old boy, he disappeared while swimming yesterday with his family. rescuers just gave an update in the last half our on their efforts. karen moriarty will have more on where they're focusing their search. talk about weather and traffic, do you see things changing for us.

>> it seems like a cooling trend is beginning for some. a few locations have the sun but a lot have the fog. we're being helped by a low pressure system which is on its way. it's much cooler this morning. it's low 40s. fog or sun by noon. i did hold on to a couple of low 80s today. it's the last day for a while here. a higher fog bank. it's making a surge inland here. you put a westerly breeze behind that and you can get 40s in here. concord now says a little fog in the area. i know there's some towards pleasanton. there's plenty of fog to go around, not much of a breeze, we have a 46-degree temperature that will cut through you. the fog restreets to the coast and it will be -- retreats to the coast. it is close enough that it will

give us a significant trend t 60s 07s bay side and steve good morning, we're looking at at a commute that is not all that bad so far in many areas. there's one trouble spot. a car went into the water or close to it. a lot of people slowed down to take a lock. one of our cruises is stuck in the traffic jam. we're going to look at 101 getting into the city. this is a look at highway 24 westbound coming in from walnut creek to be oakland. the drive time is about 12 minutes right, now, between those two points. if you're driving to the bay bridge toll plaza it's 25 minutes. our time is 7:32, the department of homeland security is investigating a chilling photo showing a tram at san

francisco international airport. that photo was printed in the latest issue of the magazine called inspire. it calls on young muslim extremists, pack your tools of destruction assemble your bomb. they raised concerns about that photo during a house committee meeting on homeland security. he's disturbed by that photo. >> this is one of the largest international airports in the world, certainly, one of the largest on the west coast, and thousands of passengers a day use the tram to connect from our bart system to the airport. >> the tsa says the magazine used a stock photo they're not aware of any specific threat aimed at sfo. they're reacting to possible tram threat, the

picture is troubling and it's a reminder about a continuing threat of a terror attack. passengers are asked to be very alert and aware. >> if people come on bart and they're on that tram and it's something that i use personally seeing that photo, it's the same for every american, if they're at a big airport, the threat is still real. >> federal officials say they don't know of any specific threats aimed at sfo, the hearing was held as we approach the one year anniversary of the boston marathon bombings and the pga attack and pg and e revealed they're going to make a big announcement about that case later today pg&e will offer a reward for information in that attack. more than a dozen transformers

were damned last april after a shooter shot for 20 minutes. they called it the most significant incident of terrorism involving the power grid. this don't think it's the work of terrorists still no arrests have been made. a man was hit and killed in a crosswalk, it's reopened to traffic. it happened on heelsburg avenue near murphy avenue. it was closed in both directions while the accident scene was cleared. it opened around 10 last night. police say the driver is cooperating and there are no indications that alcohol or drugs were a factor. the accident happened just several hundred feet from the site of another crash in a crosswalk that left the 16-year- old with serious brain injuries in 2009. family members of that victim suped the city of sebastopol and caltran and that trial is

set to go next month. a tragic shooting in oakland ripped families apart. five were injured and two were killed. this happened back in 2011, a shooting at a nightclub. one of the killers will be sentenced just hours from now. >> reporter: the hearing is scheduled for 9:30 this morning. it still remains very difficult for them. after all their lives have been shattered by what happened. we spoke with one family who says they garnered strength from the trauma, what happened that they forgive and hold no anger for the men responsible. one of the men who is going to be sentenced today is lamar fox. he returns to oakland at 9:30 to face sentencing. both fox and tomkins faced

counts of murder. one was sentenced for life sentence without parole. they were targeting rival gang members and their shots missed and five victims were shot and two were killed. one of the victims killed was 26-year-old billy jenkins a young father who had big plans to take care of his girlfriend and daughter. she finished preschool and she says she misses her dad a lot. >> i did the i love you daddy, i knew if he was here, he would be front and center. >> his girlfriend says she for gives the man responsible. there is no anger. the trauma of what happened has given her strength and she's

just south of the candlestick exit when he lost control of that car for some reason, hit the center divide and then veered off the road. i want to bring in now, officer ramirez with the california highway patrol. why do you think this gentleman left of the roadway and win into the water. >> we got a call early 7:00 a.m. and there are reasons unknown we're investigating. we got a call that he was driving northbound and he was unable to maintain his lane and for reasons, being investigated he ended up in the water just over here. >> he's at san francisco general, how is he doing? >> we don't know that. our main mission was to get him to the hospital and now, we are to get the vehicle out of the water and get him to the hospital. >> you were to get him out of

the water? >> the fire department they were able to help us assist getting him out of the vehicle. he was the sole occupant. we're going to investigate the collision thoroughly. >> there was the possibility that there was some sort of a medical emergency that caused him to leave the road? >> it's possible that it was a medical emergency. >> the chp are still investigating and there are no lanes blocked. we should point out on northbound 101 again, this is south of the candlestick exit here. there's quite a bit of traffic out on the scene of the road. they're slowing down just a bit. an elderly gentleman, the tow truck, we were going to have to remove this car. the chp investigated the cause of the crash. live this morning, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> we'll check back with a time

now, the gem at dublin high school is closed this morning. it may be contaminated. the school closed it down earlier this week. the construction crew found signs of mold. a consultant hired by the school district made a full inspection of the locker rooms. they made an inspection in a day or two if mold is not found. there's a press conference going on involving the stabbing yesterday at a high school in pittsburgh. it looks like one of the injured students might be talking and answering questions. so, let's listen in. >> a couple of times, i don't know [indiscernible] >> we found out two days before the incident and his girlfriend beth, she goes to a different school, she still hopes he'll

be heeled up enough. he plans on dancing. >> i plan on it. >> you mentioned your daughter -- [indiscernible] >> my daughter is in the high school as well. she's a freshman. she was down the hallway -- >> you've been listening live to a little bit of a press conference right now. we understand that some of the doctors at the pittsburgh high school there are five students in critical condition. one had surgery overnight and in very critical condition, a student suffered a stab wound that missed his heart by millimeters and stabbed his liver. >> he stabbed all the victims, doesn't know the victims. he did not appreciate the gravity of the actions and his parents are horrified by the attack. two ordinary kitchen knives were used. he's being held without bail being charged as an adult.

through oakland for peace and safety for the children in the neighborhood. this follows three sexual assaults on children and years of violence. >> the march took over where a six-year-old girl was lured from a playground and sexually assaulted last month. they are building friendships as a way to fight crime. some say they hear gunfire in their neighborhood about twice a week and the attack on the elementary school girl was the third attack recently. >> it happened right where my kids wait for me after school. >> we decided instead of being upset we're going into our homes building big fences the way forward was to reconnect. >> police believe the same suspect is responsible for the first two attacks on the elementary school kids. one was at think college now elementary school and the other at the world academy charter

back on to land here. northbound 101 is a mess. i would use 280 northbound instead. use 280 to avoid this. this will be an eyesore. people are looking at this crash. we found a stalled car or truck west 80 near ashby avenue. traffic is slowing down as you come through here and chp is on the way. drive times for you 280 to 380 only 6 minutes which is not bad. 101 to the 280 interchange is 11 minutes that's not bad. we have a lot of fog around some sun inland before we get started here. i retreated and posted it on my facebook page. i believe it's science or science news. they found preserved leaf

. welcome back, the members are back home this morning after saving is a sick baby and her family who were stranded in the ocean off of the coast of mexico. the family were dropped off in san diego. everyone including the baby are doing okay. the team started a mission a week ago to save the sick one- year-old baby on a 36 yearly sailboat. they made a distress call after the boat lost its steering and took on water. they blogged about the adventure but now that they're home they're not saying anything except for a tweet thanking their rescuers. they are saying words cannot express their appreciation.

the coast guard is not saying how much that rescue mission cost. as a matter of policy they don't seek reimbursement from mariners in distress. it reports millions of dollars every year. they are hoping to get help from a 62-year-old woman who keeps trying to unlawful board planes at san francisco airport. they arrested heart man on -- heartman again on wednesday. this was her fifth attempt and third, arrest after being spotted at the airport. the da says jail is not the appropriate place for her, but her goal is to get her connected with social services to get help. she claims she has cancer and wants to go some place warm. a couple of grass roots efforts are raising money to accepted her to hawaii legally. the money it raises will go

here we are a couple of days later, it's 10 degrees cooler on the low. it's not heading our direction yet. it's heading towards central and southern california. it will weaken as it does, it's going to give us a pretty pronounced cooling trend going the next few days here. a lot of 70s are, 50s and 60s closer to the water. all right. steve, we're looking at slow traffic in many parts of the bay. this is a look at 08 the. we have a stalled truck by ashby avenue. the traffic has been on the slow side down from richmond. the traffic has been slow approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. we're backed up for a 20-minute delay. there was an accident on the bridge and there was a vehicle stuck and it has been removed. 101 is the busiest freeway.

85 is not all that bad, but it's not great either. in the saratoga, we have a crash on northbound 101 on the peninsula near brisby, let's go back to the desk. >> south, we're following breaking news. a char has crashed into the water near candlestick park. alex savage is at the scene near northbound 101. this is causing a major traffic jam for drivers into the city. >> reporter: yes a significant backup on northbound 101 south of the candlestick park exit and this is the reason why behind us here. this is the red toyota camry. it was just pulled from the waters of the bay by a tow truck crew. they just managed to pull this car out of the water where it had been for the last hour or so. the elderly driver had a medical emergency this morning.

driving north on the freeway, he veered right into the bay. this crash was at 6:45, the driver lost control hit a pole on the side of the freeway and went into the water. the good news in all of this, that water is at san francisco general hospital right now, he has only minor injuries after this dramatic crash. a short time ago a chp officer talked about the rescue effort. >> essentially, the fire department, they were able to help us assist getting him out of the vehicle. for now, we're going to invest the collision thoroughly. >> reporter: and we bring you back here to a live picture. this is the toyota camry that was just pulled from the waters of the bay after a spectacular crash here along northbound 101. they had to get a little wet this morning, this tow truck crew. they had to hookup the car and pull it from the bay. it was an unusual tow job this

morning after this crash. the driver he's okay. he was checked out or is being checked out at san francisco general hospital with minor injuries. he's an elderly gentleman from mountain view. they're doing a full investigation. they believe that this driver had a medical emergency possibly went into a diabetic shock and that's what caused him to lose control this morning and drive right into the waters of the bay. live this morning in san francisco alex savage ktvu, channel 2 news. time is 8:05, a desperate coast guard search going on to try to find a missing 14-year- old boy who was carried away about i rip currents at ocean beach in san francisco. they're looking for 14-year-old march cosince about 4:00 yesterday afternoon. he was out there playing in the water when a rip current pulled him out to sea. the coast guard is still patrolling the waters from this

area to the golden gate bridge. if it's not too foggy they'll send a helicopter out to cover a wider area. >> i'm covering search and rescue at this time. the kid could be stranded on the beach somewhere or landed on a rock. until we can confirm this is not the case it's a search and rescue. >> that rip current pulled in his cousin and his father. they jumped into the water trying to save him, but the 17- year-old surfer saw all the trouble and pulled the cousin and the father to safety. while the cousin should be okay. the father we're told is in critical condition. coming up in our next half-hour we'll bring you a live report from out there at ocean beach while that search continues this morning. caltran's crews finished pothole repairs on the bay bridge. that caused one of are the

recent late night traffic jams in recent history. this it was the scene as drivers in san francisco tried to get on the lower deck. some people say it took two hours on to the bridge. they shut down three eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes. traffic in both directions just stopped because of concerns of debris from the upper deck was falling on to the lower deck. the traffic was backed up for miles during the entire emergency repair project. the work began at 7:00 and it went on well past midnight. it is national crime victim's week and authorities in the south bay are using a new time to help solve crimes, we have information live to reach out to the public. >> reporter: good morning we're in downtown san jose, we're set up in a laptop and we're showing what the district attorney's website is showing. they want to prevent people

. it is 8:25 california fish and wildlife officials are taking care of a crocodile that was captured wandering around a strip mall in roseville. this is video of animal control capturing the four foot crocodile yesterday. he was not happy to be captured. it escaped a container that was set outside of a reptile business. it was a nile crocodile and to call rescue. they can grow up to 20 feet long and they're illegal to own. >> this is a nasty crocodile, it has a bad attitude. >> the reptile store is a safe surrender site for animals who cannot care for them -- for people who cannot care for their animals any more. this crocodile is likely to go to a zoo. these cars, they all have a

they have a rescue boat in addition to the cutter search. both of those boats are actually doing patrols from the golden gate bridge down to the lake marcette area. 14-year-old march cowent missing around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. he as his cousins were playing knee-deep had they were swept out to sea by a rip current. his father went out to help and he got caught in the current. and a surfer paddled over and pulled the father and his cousin to show. >> we are hoping he washed up to shore and he might be injured on the beach or something, we can pick him up alive. we want to find him and bring him back to his family. >> the surfer is tony, and his father is a san francisco fire captain. he's being hailed as a hero. as for the two people that were

rescued. the cousin is fine, but the father is in critical condition. that was as of last night. we asked the fire department if this is considered a rescue mission or if it's a recovery effort. if it is still a search and rescue they're going to be out here until they found march co. i'm tear a moreiatory. >> more, now, about rip currents, they happen around the west coast, the waves can move up to 8 feet a second. that's faster than an olympic swimmer. they rescue thousands of people from rip currents, but about 100 people a year die in the rip currents. they can be hard to spot but here are things lifeguards say you should watch out for. a channel of churning choppy water. an area of noticeably different colored water. a line of foam or debris moving out to sea, and also a break income the incoming wave pattern. if you see any of these things,

. crews are searching for that missing malaysia airlines flight 370. they've detected a new under water signal. the signal came from some man made object. they picked up signals tuesday and last weekend. the black box, if it is the black box, may be running out of batteries very soon. malaysian authorities say when the plane first veered off course it dipped down to 4,000 feet possibly to avoid being detected by radar. they're confirming it came from the head pilot, the last

communication. there was a chase and they rammed a police cruiser and threatened a family. when they tried to make a traffic stop on highway 37, the driver took off going more than 09 miles per hour on several free ways before the chase ended in the shopping center. police say they were forced to shoot when the suspect rammed a police cruiser then floored the suv in the direction of a family waiting at a drive through window. >> it would have come straight for him and who knows what could have happened if the officers -- not take immediate action. police are still trying to identify the suspect who did not have any id on him. we contacted the city fire department. the two firefighters hurt yesterday morning when two fire trucks crashed into each other as they rushed to a house fire, they're in good shape this morning. this happened near crocker
