auto-pedestrian fatalities this year. anne ruben, ktvu channel 2 news. in light of the alarming number of people hit by vehicles, san francisco is trying to make some of the streets safer. they are planning spend $17 million to increase safety. and not be distracted by activities like texting. the coast guard this afternoon called off its search for a 14 year old boy who disappeared in the surf off san francisco's ocean beach yesterday. marco was swimming with his cousin. his father tried to rescue him. the cousin is fine, but the father is hospitalized in critical condition. we will talk to the 17 year old

surfer who pulled the father and cousin from the surf. happening now, crews are working to repair a sinkhole in san francisco. it opened up in the sunset district. the department of public works is on the scene. a leak or perhaps the recent wet weather last week may be to blame. the hole was 4 feet deep and 5 feet across. that introduction is closed until crews can repair the hole because it is right in the middle of the street. the number of people linked to salmonella from foster farms is up. the centers for disease control released new numbers of cases. 524 people have been diagnosed in 25 states, most of them here in california. investigators think the outbreak can be traced to three foster farms plants.

a man had to be pulled from san francisco bay this morning after his toyota plunged off highway 101. the chp sayslet man was going northbound at 6:45 a.m. when he had medical issues related to diabetes. the man was uninjured but was taken to the hospital for treatment of his medical condition. nearly a year after a substation was attacked, the fbi still doesn't believe it was a terrorist attack. also the new reward that's being offered tonight. >> reporter: the fbi said this afternoon they found no indications that this was a terrorist attack, but pg and e put up a million dollar reward today. >> it was a pretty big attack on a major substation and i

ktvu channel 2 news. it could be the least expensive option yet for going organic. walmart announced its adding its own line of organic foods. it will start with 100 packaged products but may later expand to other products such as meats. 25 percent less than organic national brands currently sold at walmart. a las vegas hospital accused of dumping hundreds of mentally ill patients here in california is now meeting standards. for allegedly busing patients into the city. in january, the hospital was warned it was in jeopardy of losing funding. a follow up inspection found the facility is meeting requirements. the high speed rail authority has a new business planned that lowers the projected revenue for the

favored fair field oakland firefighters responding to a fire in a warehouse this morning made an unusual discovery. they found a lot of marijuana stashed inside the 23 cubic foot refrigerator. it caught fire this morning not far from oakland international airport. was marijuana was packaged in plastic cylinders. police are looking into who was renting the warehouse space.

a baskin robbins employee is under arrest for serving something that wasn't one of the 31 flavors. he sold marijuana to undercover officers while working behind the ice cream counter. they say it happened tuesday in the baskin robbins. the arrest was part of a 6-week investigation. she was caught in a wall of mud clinging to her infant son and safety. she is telling her harrowing story of survival after being pullinged from the mud slide in washington state. she said when the slide hit, it looked like houses were exploding on the outside. she says she held on to your 5 month old little boy as if it were the only purpose she had. a current carried her and her baby boy duke.

complete bay area news coverage continues. this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. tonight rescue crews have packed up and gone home as the frantic search for a teenager swept into the ocean has been suspended. the search up and down ocean beach lasted nearly 24 hours. they could not find the 14 year old. ktvu was there near the beach when the coast guards there was nothing more they could do. >> reporter: coast guard pulled back those resources just about

with the 13 year old who was rescued. he told her he was grateful for tony's bravery and thanks him. rip currents are common at ocean beach, but you may not know how they form or what you should do if you get caught in one. rip currents typically form at low spots or breaks in between a sand bar. as the waves come in, the water has to go back out. what it looks for is a channel where it can go. and that is what can pull you back into the ocean. you can see from this picture the calm area there, it looks like a great place to go swimming, but that is the rip current. if you get anything out of all of this, this is what you need to know: this is the most important thing to remember. if you are caught in a rip current and being carried away from the beach, the first thing, don't panic. instead, you swim parallel to the shore until you get out of

in the wake of the deadly fort hood shooting, the u.s. senate is addressing a bill that is for -- vietnam veteran says one of his cousins came home from the vietnam war with severe mental issues. thousands of soldiers have been coming home from iraq and afghanistan, the legislation is suspected to help identify problems and help people get the help they need. we told you about the boy on the bike hit by a truck in san francisco and seriously injured. it comes on the same day the police chief gave advice to students on how to stay safe on

cooling trend we've seen this week. >> a little cooler today in some places. in other places, close to where we were yesterday, but the cooling trend does continue. these are the temperatures we recorded today. you can see they're down a couple. some areas were up a little. but the trend is for more of this fog to push further inland the next couple of days. especially tomorrow, that low pressure here, as that cuts closer to the coast, we'll get clouds from it, but the main thing we'll notice is the cooler pattern as that low gets close. it releases the inversion on the fog and make it's deeper. when the fog is shallow, it's hotter inland. when the fog is thick or high, it gets over the hills and you have a cooler pattern. that's what we're seeing as you head into tomorrow as the system gets closer to the

coastline. 70 in oakland, 80 in walnut creek. those are your current numbers. the marine layer is going to be thicker. that means more cool air gets inland. i'll be saying this a lot. cooler tomorrow with more clouds because of that system. as we head into the weekend, kind of the same pattern continues. so high pressure still resides. it's not going to rain, but it's moved over enough that this low pressure center can bump to the coast and as it does, it thickens up the fog. it's not going to get cold. it will get much cooler in southern california. santa barbara will see cool in there, maybe even drizzle. but we're on the north end of the system, so cooler weather, more fog, and the clouds you're seeing here. by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, have you high clouds. in the afternoon, see what the fog did? these are the forecast highs. those greens are 60s, yellows,

a day offing turned into a life or death situation for a young man on who survived an avalanche. an avalanche hit. he plunged almost 1,000 feet down the mountain. luke suffered a concussion, broken nose, and knee injury, but was otherwise okay. he says it was his helmet that saved his life. >> tumbling down a little bit and at one point i got thrown on to my back.
