on interstate 5, 12 hours after that horrible firey crash that has taken the lives of ten people including five high school students. ktvu tara moriarty is there on scene. she will have an update coming up in two minutes. it is friday, april 11th i'm pam cook. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. we are also talking about your weather and traffic. steve, how is our forecast? >> a band of high clouds thinning out and low clouds unbeneath. so cloudy to mostly cloudy in the morning. mainly 50s. mid 50s on the lows. we'll get mostly sunny and partly cloudy skies later on. temperatures again one upper 40 here. everyone else san jose 55. livermore and antioch in there as well. now the higher clouds you can see there is a back edge to this some dry air will come in later on. lots of clouds. fog will head back to the coast. cooler for most here. even with filter sunshine.

upper 70s and low 80s. a lot of 60s around the bay. here is sal. we are looking at the commute and it's not looking too bad. we haven't had too many incidents but we do have a slow down at the bay bridge toll plaza and a traffic time that is moving or a traffic time that is up. this is about a 15-20 minute drive now into san francisco. also we are looking at interstate 880 and the traffic here continues to look pretty good heading south to hayward. the drive time between 238 and fremont is still about 15 minutes which is just where it should be. there are no problems on the san mateo bridge. that commute has a 10-11 minute drive time across the span over to the peninsula. let's go back to the desk. right now 6:00 this morning we are following very latest developments in that deadly crash in orlando west of chico. over night the death toll rose to 10. investigators say a fedex truck slammed into a charter bus carrying high school students

on interstate 5 yesterday evening. the ntsb sending a rapid response team to the scene. >> we're going to be investigating the human, the machine, and the environment and what is critical for us especially in highway accidents is for us to collect parishable information. the kind of information that goes away very quickly. >> the ntsb is picking up investigators in texas and will continue on to california. they are expected to arrive sometime this afternoon. now investigators expected to be there on the scene at least all day today. the crash happened on interstate 5. that is 20 miles of west of chico. tara moriarty just arrived on the scene moments ago. and tara, we understand you just got an update on the investigation this morning. tara. >> reporter: we received an update from the chp. the coroner was able to remove the nine bodies. there were nine here on the

scene inside of that badly burned bus that you see behind me sheer. this is in the northbound direction. you can see everything is still shut down. investigators are still taking measurements and gathering evidence. and it will take some time to tow the bus and truck away. the chp is investigating i-5 will not reopen until 9:00 this morning. school officials with los angeles unified have been working through the night trying to identify those who were killed. this horrific tragedy unfolded just after 5:30 last night when a southbound fedex truck crossed the grassy median on interstate 5 and slammed into the bus head on. we know that the drivers of both of the truck and the bus died as well as five students and three chaperons. witnesses say the impact sounded like a series of explosions both vehicles bursting into flames. the bus was taking students from various los angeles schools. a few miles away from here at the veterans memorial hall, some of the students who were not hurt went there after the crash.

and facebook. happening today criminal cases against two san francisco 49ers returned to superior court. this comes after two teammates are named in a police report in miami. ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live in san jose. bringing us reaction to these new troubles for the team. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. from a public relations standpoint this does not bode well for these 49ers players. this morning attorneys will be in court and they will be disguising driving under the influence, a hit and run accident, and weapons charges. 49ers line backer aldon smith has two cases. he faces illegal weapons charges after deputies serged -- searched his home. the.before he crashed his car into a tree and arrested for dui and possession of

marijuana. 49ers cornerback chris culver was arrested two weeks ago for leaving the scene of an accident after he hit a bicyclist and crash into a witnesses car. police found brass knuckles in his car an illegal weapon. and the late toast be in trouble kaepernick and patton. they are investigates after an alleged incident at a hotel. the players told a woman to smoke marijuana then kaepernick undressed her and she passed out and ended up in the hospital. >> they tend to be more negative than neutral. >> people fill in the gaps. >> they fill in the gaps with the story they want them to be. >> there will always be his side, her side. it will either damage the team names or his name. >> reporter: rumors are swirling around a sexual assault occur even though in a

from other districts that were on the bus. we don't know those districts at the time. that information may be available from humboldt. >> explain to us your concerns right now. [ inaudible ] >> we are very saddened by this traffic accident. very tragic. but we currently have a contingency of three groups heading to the crash site now to meet with parents, meet with students to focus on getting these students back to l.a.. they have been deployed to four different hospitals within the area or medical centers. we are working very carefully to make sure we get these folks taken care of and in communication with parents. we have been here all night. trying to identify individuals.

trying to identify which schools. because with this accident, very much -- there was very little information available to us. >> we have a team here. executive director for student health and human services. director of crisis counseling. one of our areas. as well as -- we also have miss jill she is with a couple other crisis counselors to give assistance.

as that becomes available. time is 6:11. new this morning pg&e working to repair a power line. it was ripped off a power pole by a garbage truck. this happened at 3:30 this morning. the driver of that truck was not hurt. only a few customers actually lost power but it has since been restored. almost one year and still no arrests in the attack on a south by pg&e substation but officials are hoping $1.5 million reward will entice someone to come forward. i want to show you surveillance video of the attack. whoever cut the lines and hit the transformer with more than two dozen rounds cut off service to 911. >> it was a pretty big attack on a major substation. and opened a lot overeyes.

lamar fox says it was him, not his friend who shot two innocent bystanders at sweet jimmy's nightclub almost three years ago. [ inaudible ] >> yesterday fox was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. that shooting left two people dead and injured five more. the parents of 22-year-old adam williams who was one of the victims says they are happy

with that sentence but says it's still hard since their grandson will never see his father again. >> i think about him about the time we went to the raiders game. and every time we go they win. >> he has nightmares. he is angry. in school we have problems we have problems with him in school. >> before sentencing fox apologized to both the victims families. another man was sentenced to life in prison for the shooting last month. now lamar fox says he did ittompkins says he plans to fight a new trial for his client. the former olympic track star faced another day of relentless cross-examination on the witness stand. they grilled him about why he shot and killed his girlfriend.

pistorius says he accidentally killed her after mistaking her for a nighttime intruder. there are some big holes in that story. >> this trial had been delayed several times because pistorius broke down on the witness stand. one college's plan to bring in extra money is stirring up a backlash. with hopes of making around $600,000 a year. but critics of the deal say

then warm it up sunday and monday. clouds increase on tuesday. time now 6:21. the feds may be slowing down the sale of safeway. it was being sold to an investment group that owns albertson. they are asking for more information about the deal which could top $9 billion. safeway expects to complete the sale by the end of the year. however, regulatory approval could extend that waiting period. time is 6:22. hillary clinton came back to the bay area with an appearance at san jose state university but did she answer the question that everybody is asking? >> also the latest evidence crime is getting out of control in one major city. it's all caught on live tv.

>> the police describing that attack say within just five minutes the teenage suspect used two eight inch kitchen knives and stabbed 20 fellow students as well as a school security officer. this is incredible video. it might be the latest sign that crime is getting out of control in rio brazil. take a look at this. reporter interviewing this woman on live tv when you see that guy tries to grab her necklace. the reporter actually ran after him. police in rio have been trying to crack down on street robberies which is up more than 100% in the last year. this comes as rio is getting ready to host the world cup in two months. a theater at butler university testing a technology known as a butt kicker to help people with hearing disabilities. the university says it helps them experience musical performances more fully. the system works by taking audio signals, sending them through wires to the units on the bottom of the seats making

where investigators are still on the scene and survivors are being reunited with their families. >> reporter: we are two miles away from the crash site here at the veterans hall. if you look behind me here, this is where they have police set up that are guarding the entrance to where a lot of the survivors came after the crash. some had been picked up by family and other students are trying to sleep on cots inside. the red cross is set up but again we are not being allowed in. we know 34 passengers have been taken to three different hospitals. one here in orland. the others in red bluff. we did receive an update from the chp. the coroner has removed the badly burned bodies by those involved in the crash. investigators are still taking measurements and gathering evidence. then it will take them some time to tow the bus away. the chp is estimating thattics -- that i-5 will not be open until later on. they have been working through the night to identify those who were killed. the horrific tragedy unfolded just after 5:30 last night when

the night trying to identify the victims and survivors here after the accident. the school district said a short time ago they will be sending a team of administrators up to the various hospitals where the crash happened yesterday. officials say the students on board that bus attended a number of southern california schools and there will be later today crisis counselors on hand at those schools for the students, for the parents, for the teachers. you can imagine. this trip up to humboldt state was not sponsored by l.a. unified school district. that is important to point out and that is making things difficult for school officials as they figure out who was on board the bus and who was killed in that accident. >> there is little information for us. >> but we are learning a bit more about the students in this crash through social media. we just found pictures on one students twitter feed a short

at the same time when that bus crashed but they left late because her boyfriend was not feeling well. we are learning new details about wednesday's deadly accident in sebastopol. a car struck and killed frederick while he was heading home from his evening walk. investigators say the 75-year- old driver is cooperating with authorities but that she is traumatizen. suspended state senator leland yee due back in federal court at 11:00 a.m.. the judge in san francisco will review the evidence in yee's political corruption case as it gets closer to a trial. now earlier this week yee pleaded not guilty to charges ranging from wire fraud to conspiracy to illegally import weapons. federal prosecutors say they plan more charges in the case involving a total of 28

defendants but they won't say if any of the new charges will billion against leland yee. another main figure in this corruption case is also due back in court this morning. family members and friends of raymond chow now coming to his defense. and i'm not talking before he went to prison. i'm talking since he got out. >> chow has a long criminal history. served time in federal prison for racketeering and other crimes. chow now faces money laundering and conspiracy charges for his alleged role in this political corruption case. for the second time this week former secretary of state hillary clinton made an appearance in the bay area.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. the 49ers in hot water following a series of players getting into trouble. the latest invest involves quarterback collin kaepernick and this morning two of his teammates have court hearings for their legal troubles. janine de la vega is joining us from san jose to talk about what is happening today. janine. >> reporter: attorneys for the players will be in court this morning to discuss a hit and run accident, illegal weapons charges, and driving under the influence and now there is a police investigation involving quarterback collin kaepernick. some people we have been speaking to this morning says the management of the team needs to have a serious talk with players. this morning 49ers line backer smith has hearings on two separate criminal cases. he faces illegal weapons charges after deputies searched his home and found assault rifles following a party at his home last october. the month before police say he

crashed his car into a tree and arrested for dui and possession of marijuana. attorneys will also address charges that 49ers cornerback chris culver faces. he was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly leaving the scene after he hit a bicyclist and crashed into a witnesses car. police found an illegal weapon in his vehicle. yesterday news broke that miami police want to talk to collin kaepernick and quintin patton about an alleged incident in their hotel. they told her to smoke marijuana then kaepernick kissed and undressed her and she passed out and wound up in a hospital. >> as far as kaepernick goes i don't buy it for a second. >> reporter: rumors are swirling around a sexual assault occurred even though in the police report the woman says she did not have sex with kaepernick. currently kaepernick and patton are not facing charges.

the #walktowork can win some prizes. walk san francisco will release the city's first report card on its goals to make the streets safer for people to walk. a crash last week killed a four-year-old boy in napa. the little boy that died had been strap into a booster seat. parents wonder why a child in a car seat would suffer deadly internal injuries. the chp says that is because he was in a booster seat that allows more body movement than a conventional car seat. that has a lot of parents going to their local chp office to make sure their car seats are installed properly. >> something like that happening and as a parent it just scares you to death. you just want to make sure you are safe. >> now his mother also faces months of recovery. she's had several surgeries and more are still to come.
