it will go right into your weekend. it's time now for "mornings on 2". 49ers in trouble, far away from the football field. two scheduled court appearances today and a third incident involving the star quarterback. "mornings on 2" starts right now. and good morning. these are pictures -- actually, i'm not quite sure what these are pictures of. >> this is one of the locations in the area where families are gathering to get more information about what happened in that horrible bus tragedy that we're covering for you. tara moriarty is in the area. she will talk to those in los angeles and see about those who survived. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve is right over there.

we have a lot of high clouds over us. a nice sunrise unless you have the fog in there. there's plenty to go around. a little chilly for some. not too bad for others. but the clouds will be with us for the morning. so cloudy to mostly cloudy. maybe some filtered sun. temperatures in the 50s. low 50s for the fog. 51 in the city. 49 santa rosa. 54, san jose. 52 in walnut creek. higher clouds will thin out by late morning, early afternoon. the south bay will see the sun sooner. there's not a lot to them. all of this here is headed to southern california. might trigger in a few cues. for us, it will be a cooler day. rebound on sundays. 50s, 60s, 70s and a few very low 80s. here's sal. we're looking at a commute that's woken up. drive times are getting higher. let's take a look at some of the drives if you are driving in marin county. southbound 101, there is a

crash involving a bicyclist that was somehow near the freeway. southbound 101 at tamalpais. i think they have a bike lane that parallels the freeway. but the fire department and medics are blocking one lane of the freeway to tend to the injured person. southbound 101 gonna be a little slow. 80 westbound between hercules and richmond, not a bad commute. if you are driving between concord and walnut creek today, the traffic is not all that bad. as a matter of fact, we have a good-looking commute on southbound 680. this is a look at bay bridge toll plaza, it's 50-minute drive time into san francisco. if you are driving on 280 northbound, from 680 to 17, the drive time is about eight minutes. let's go back to the desk. >> all right. thank you, sal. a charter bus carrying high school students crashed and burst into flames on interstate 5 near chico, killing ten people. this morning, 13 and a half hours after the deadly head-on collision, the burned wreckage

of the bus remains on the side of the road. the crash happened just after 5:30 yesterday evening near the rural community of orland. that's 100 miles north of sacramento. reporter tara moriarty is live now at a relief center where some of the survivors spent the night. tara? >> reporter: we're here about two miles away from the crash tight at the veterans memorial building, where some of the crash survivors have come. wino that humboldt state university president did come by here earlier this morning. that's actually the college that these students were on their way to when the crash happened. he said the students inside are holding up very well. he was able to visit a hospital, however, in redding. he says the students there are having more difficult of a time. some of the volunteers are arriving. also parents are gonna be coming here to pick up their kids. we know that 34 passengers have been taken to various local hospitals and the red cross is set up right here. but no media is being allowed

inside. the coroner has now removed the badly burned bodies of those involved in the crash. investigators are still taking measurements and gathering evidence. it will take some time to tow the bus and truck away. the so the chp is estimating that i-5 northbound won't be open until around 9:00. school officials have been working through the night to try to identify those kill and notify families. we noticed a volunteer drop off milk and doughnuts at the shelter. a lot of folks in the community want to help the survivors and their families in any way. >> i came to help out for the people that, you know, need a lot of people. they are suffering a lot. i just do a little bit, you know, something that i can do. >> reporter: the tragedy unfolded just after 5:30 last night when a southbound fed-ex truck crossed the grassy median on interstate 5 and slammed into the bus head on. we know the drivers died at

well as five students. the bus again was taking students from various los angeles area schools to visit humboldt state university in arcadia. the glenn county sheriff's office will hold a press conference later this morning at 10:00. we'll be sure to let you know what they have to say. live from orland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the ntsb is sending a rapid response team to the scene. investigators spoke early this morning before leaving washington, d.c. >> we're gonna be investigating the human, the machine and the environment and what's critical for us especially in highway accidents is for us to collect perishable information, the kind of information that goes away very quickly. >> that would include memories of the witnesses. the ntsb is picking up investigators in texas and will continue on here to california. they will expected to arrive sometime -- are expected to arrive sometime this afternoon. at ktvu.com, we've posted additional video and photos of

this catastrophic accident. we're posting updates on twitter and facebook. top executives at b.a.r.t. are getting a pay raise. the brdz board of directors approved it. these are pay hikes of 3.7%. that's in line with the pay hikes for most of b.a.r.t.'s rank and file workers. the board's decision follows two b.a.r.t. strikes and months of very bitter labor negotiations. the board also voted to higher a -- to hire a consultant to see what went wrong and the goal of avoiding b.a.r.t. strikes in the future. still no arrest in the sabotage attack on a south bay pg&e substation. however, investigators are hoping $500,000 reward, that mae entice somebody -- may entice somebody to come forward. take a look at the surveillance video. somebody firing shots on the metcalf substation last april, caused millions of dollars in damage. whoever cut the fiberoptic

lines and hit the transformer with more than a dozen rounds temporarily cut off service to 911 service. >> it was a pretty big attack on a major substation. i think that -- that opened a lot of our eyes in the industry as to what we need to do to get better and improve. >> pg&e says it's working close with local and federal investigators. pg&e is has improved security around the metcalf substation as part of the $100 million effort to increase the security at all of the substations. 7:08. san jose police are sending out a warning about a scam where someone is claiming to be one of their officers and demanding money. police report the caller says the victim or victims' relatives have traffic or other arrest warrants and must pay the fines immediately or face being arrested. the police department says they don't collect money over the phone. people who think they have been a victim of the scam are asked to call san jose police.

a woman who was already arrested for allegedly using fake credit cards at the graton casino is facing new charges. sonoma county sheriff deputies say 33-year-old jonna matthews told a judge yesterday that she left her 3-year-old daughter alone in her car. also in that car, deputies say they found hypodermic needles filled with what authorities believe to be meth. she was booked for felony child endangerment. she was arrested last saturday along with four other people. they were all accused of using fake credit cards at the graton casino and other locations. she's also the woman at the sent of a section and theft scandal at a prominent north beach church. she was the secretary of the national shrine about a year before she was fired last fall. in january, she filed a lawsuit accusing her former superior, bill mclaughlin, of hiring her for sex and says he fired her

when she turned down his advances. 7:09. a former caseworker at the glade foundation now accused of stealing more than $122,000 from a san francisco-based charity. liddia george was arrested yesterday in sacramento. authorities say she used her position to submit fake applications for emergency housing aid from the chronicle seasons of sharing fund. over a one-year period starting in 2010. this charity is a charity that gives rental assistance. the investigation started when an agency employee noticed that george used her sister's name on one of the fake applications. the woman accused of repeatedly trying to sneak onto planes at sfo is changing her story about her latest arrest. police arrested 62-year-old marilyn hartman twice this week. once on monday and again on wednesday. at the time she told authorities she had cancer and

wanted to fly to some place warm. but today's examiner reports she's telling them she was not trying to board a plane and does not have can't -- cancer. she's expected to tell that story to a judge next month. there is another warning for people who like to eat seafood. the california department of public health is telling people not to eat anchovies or sardines caught in monterey and santa cruz counties. it comes after levels of an acid not dangerous to fish but dangerous to humans was detected in these animals. the warning follows another advisory last week where people were told not to eat mussels, clams and whole scallops in the area due to the same acid. the man who some day may rule the nation of did you dubai may have a say for the

raiders and as. mayor quan said the prince is partnering with a plan that would include new stadiums for both the raiders and as as well as a hotel, shops and homes. larry reed also revealed that mayor quan and mlb are not interested in an alternate stadium site near jack london square. one college has plans to raise more money. it is stirring up a backlash in fremont. the college announced plans to lease land along mission boulevard with the hope of making $600,000 a year. but crypticks say more homes would mean -- critics say more homes would mean more families sending children to packed schools. >> we have 1800 people in the district where there isn't a seat in their neighborhood school for them. >> the board is expected to

7:15. happening today -- more controversy swirling around the 49ers after several players face some big problems off the field. the latest investigation involves star quarterback, colin kaepernick. later this morning, two of his teammates have court hearings for their legal troubles. janine de la vega joins us live from san jose for more on the growing pr problem for the red and gold. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. i've been speaking to fans about all of these allegations. some say they are disappointed but they still support the team. 49ers' linebacker aldon smith has hearings, court hearings on two separate criminal cases. he faces illegal weapons charges after deputies searched his home and found assault rifles following a party at his home last october. the month before, police say he crashed his car into a tree and was arrested for dui and possession of marijuana. 49ers' quarterback, chris culliver was arrested two weeks

ago for allegedly leaving the scene after he hit a bicyclist and crashed into a witness's car. police found brass knuckles in that vehicle which is an illegal weapon. the latest layers to be in hot water are quarterback, colin kaepernick, and quinton patton. police are investigating after an incident at a hotel. a woman reported the players told her to smoke marijuana and she said colin kaepernick kissed her and undressed her and woke up in a hospital not knowing how she got there. >> it definitely affects their public image. i think there should be counseling or guidance to help these guys deal with the success and the money and the fame they've come into it. you got a lot of money and time on your hands, you can get into some trouble. >> reporter: rumors are swirling around that sexual assault occurred even though in the police report the woman said she did not have sex with colin kaepernick. colin kaepernick and patton are not facing charges. but police are expected to speak with them. both culliver and smith's

separate charges will be discussed in court this morning at around 9:00 a.m. but they are not expected to appear. reporting live in san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. we've posted a full police report on ktvu.com. we've -- we're also continuing right now to post updates on twitter with the hashtag kaepernick. new information on this week's deadly police shooting in vallejo. it happened wednesday near a taco bell on solano avenue. investigators now identify the man killed as 29-year-old ever ramon martinez. police say two officers opened fire on martinez when he repeatedly refused orders to stop during a very dangerous high-speed chase. at one point they say he almost crashed into a r car carrying his father and his children. it's still not clear if martinez was armed. reputed oakland gang member lamar fox, said it was him, not

his friend who shot two innocent bystanders at sweet jimmy's nightclub almost three years ago. [inaudible] >> yesterday fox was sentenced to life in prison without parole. the shooting left two people dead and injured five others. the family of adam say they are happy with the sentence but sea it's still hard since their grandson will never see her father again. >> i think about the time we went to the raiders' game and every time when we go, they win. >> has nightmares. angry. problems with him in school right now. >> before his sentenceing, fox apologized to the families. another man was sentenced last

month. now that la father fox said he did the shooting, the other man's lawyer plans to ask for a new trial for his client. it's been another day of intense questioning and high- court drama in the oscar pistorius murder trial in south africa. the former track star faced another day of relentless cross- examination on the witness stand. prosecutors grilled him about why he shot and killed his girlfriend reeva steevkamp last year. he claims he accidentally killed her after mistaking her for an intruder. but prosecutors say there are big holes in that story. >> you never said, reeva, listen and tell her what to do. that you didn't do. >> i did tell her what to do. >> you never looked the her and said reeva, go down. >> i didn't whisper her. i said it in a soft manner.

i said get down. i was sure there was somebody in my house. >> this trial has been delayed several times due to oscar pistorius breaking down and crying on the witness stand. california's record- breaking dry spell may be coming to an end. federal scientists say the weather phenomenon known as el nino could develop in the pacific by the end of the year. that could end the severe drought with a series of soaking storms next winter. this new el nino prediction comes after scientists reviewed updated weather models and satellites. california did get some rain in february and march. we all remember that. a couple of weeks ago, in fact, but the state is still under an official drought emergency. >> yeah. fingers are crossed. >> yeah. >> hoping, hoping. >> yeah. sal is back. what is your forecast, sal, for our morning commute? >> i'd say it will be moderate, if i were a guessing man. >> okay. >> friday, sometimes we do have

-- sometimes on fridays, we have better-than-usual conditions. it's moderate right now. barring any major crashes, 680 looks good by the time you reach fremont but there is a little bit of slowing in pleasanton before you reach the spot. this is the payoff, if you will. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza, it is just a little better than it normally is. it's about a 15, 20-minute drive across into san francisco. if you are driving on southbound 680 in contra costa county, eight-minute drive from 242 southbound to it ignacio valley road. not too bad. that's a pretty good drive. 80 westbound between hercules and richmond, that looks okay. a little bit of -- so the entire drive from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze is about 12 minutes. 7:22. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. sunrise for some. some of the high, thin clouds kind of thinning out a little bit. but mostly cloudy skies. if you don't have high, thin clouds, you probably have the low clouds. we'll get some sun. low coming in, spinning in a lot of these clouds.

new documents show the man convicted of shooting rampage that targeted gabrielle giffords was going off on rants the month before he opened fire. the arizona daily star obtained the fbi file surrounding the man sentenced to life in prison for the shooting. the documents include paranoid rants full of profanity on myspace where he discussed killing and his anger toward the government. the shooting left six people dead and injured 13, including giffords on january 8th, 2011. the pennsylvania high school where those 21 people were stabbed this week, it will stay closed today. investigators are still looking for a motive behind the attack. but they don't believe the reports that the suspect, 16- year-old, alex hribal, was bullied. some of the victims are talking

will keep some of that fog going and pick it right back up tonight and tomorrow. probably local drizzle. sun looks warmer. a lot of clouds over us for a while. cloudy to mostly cloudy. partly cloudy later on. 60s 70s. here's sal. we're still looking at a commute that's still busy. we've had decent ones as compared to other days this week. let's take a look at the commute now on the bay bridge approach. the drive time here is 15, 20 minutes to cross the span. earlier this week, it was much higher. 15, 20-minute drive time into the city. we also have been looking at the commute at the san mateo bridge and westbound 92, the drive time here about 11 minutes across the span. 880 between hayward and fremont, just here and there it's stop and go. the drive time is not all that bad. 580 between grant line road westbound and 680, 4-minute drive time. sometimes it -- 24 minute drive

sometime. sometimes it can be an hour. let's go back to the desk. we're starting with developing news from orland, the wreckage of a charter bus still sits right now on interstate 5 this morning. about 14 hours after that deadly crash and the death toll went up to ten. investigators say a fed-ex truck slammed into a charter bus carrying high school students yesterday evening. the ntsb is sending a rapid response team to the crash right now. investigators spoke this morning before leaving washington, d.c. >> we're gonna be investigating the human, the machine and the environment and what's critical for us, especially in highway accidents is for us to collect perishable information, the kind of information that goes away very quickly. >> now, the ntsb says an investigator from los angeles is also heading north to that crash scene. should get there later this morning. investigators from washington are expected sometime this afternoon. the students who were on that

bus were from the los angeles area. los angeles school district officials say they are still trying to put together all of the information to figure out who was involved because the trip was not organized by the school district. officials talked earlier this morning saying they've made counseling services available. >> we have a large contingent of psychologists, trained psychologists who can help with the families as they go through and want to learn -- parents want to learn the fate of their children. >> that bus was heading to humboldt state university for the campus spring preview day for perspective students. it is 7:35. social media is filling up with remarkable stories of survival. 17-year-old jonathan gutierrez tweeted this selfie in the hospital. this picture is going viral across the internet. alex savidge dug a little deeper into this story and found an amazing tale about the hours before the crash.

good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. this high school senior used twitter to document that entire bus trip one that ended with a deadly crash yesterday. it was early yesterday morning when he tweeted out a photo of the bus that he was taking, he and other students, up to humboldt state for a weekend visit. during that 12-hour ride, the teen tweeted out a picture from on board the bus. he chose to sit in the back row, a decision that may have saved his life. suddenly, his bus was hit head on by that big rig. gutierrez says he heard screams, then felt the impact and he tweeted out this photo a short time later after climbing out of a window to escape the burning bus. the post read, can't believe this just happened. i was asleep and next thing you know, i was jumping out for my life. a little while later, gutierrez sent out this selfie from the hospital where he and other suffer vifern -- survivors were

taken after the accident. the 17-year-old, doing well. only has a few cuts and bruises and wanted to let everyone know via twitter he was doing okay. we understand his father has already arrived at the hospital near chico to see his son. the teenager said he's relieved to have family members there after everything he's been through. he said he's just ready to go home. we're live in the newsroom, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. reaction and stories about people who were near the crash continue to emerge on social media. lorial took this picture of smoke rising from the bus crash fire. she said she was on a road trip with her family and would have been in that spot at the same time when the bus crashed except they left late because her boyfriend did not feel well. we'll have continues coverage of this story. 7:37. happening today, suspended state senator leland yee is due in federal court at 11:00 this morning. the judge in san francisco will

review the evidence in yee's political corruption case as it gets closer to a trial. earlier this week, yee pleaded not guilty to charges that range from wire fraud to conspiracy to illegally import weapons. federal prosecutors say they plan even more charges in the case, involving a toteal of 28 -- total of 28 defendants. they've not said whether any of the new charges will be against yee. another main figure in this case is due in court this morning. family members and friends of raymond "shrimp boy" chow coming to his defense. they held a news conference in san francisco. many wore t-shirts like this showing support for him. newly-hired defense lawyer tony serra said chow has stayed out of trouble since getting out of prison 11 years ago. >> we won't represent a gang member. we represent an exemplary human

being. >> chow has a long criminal history, serving time for racketeering and other crimes. he faces money laundering and conspiracy charges for his alleged role in this political corruption case. now yee's decision to drop out of the race for secretary of state, that's given a political boost to other candidates according to a field poll by ktvu conducted after he was arrested on republican charges. pete peterson is now in first place with a 3% gain since yee dropped out. and democrat alex padilla saw a 7% jump. other candidates are trailing far behind. the number of undecided voters still 41%. 7:39. it's one of the deadliest highway crashes in california's history. our team coverage continues at a relief center in orland where some of the victims are waking up this morning. we've been looking at the records of the bus company at the center of the tragedy.

pam cook's in the studio now with new information about the bus company involved in this crash. good morning, pam. >> good morning. we're trying to figure out more information on the bus company involved in the crash and the fed-ex driver. the bus driver and the fed-ex driver both killed in that accident. now here's what we've learned so far about the bus company. it's called silverado stages. it's based in san luis obispo and has a fairly good safety record. it's had two crashes, one with an injury, one tow away. neither were fatal. three inspection violations which appear to be for being overweight and one driver violation for not having a medical certificate. silverado stages has a statement on its website. it reads in part, "silverado stages is helping the authorities in gathering information regarding the tragic accident that occurred on thursday evening. our top priority is making sure the injured are being cared for. our thoughts and prayers are

with the injured, and everyone affected by this accident." the chp reports that the fed-ex driver crossed over the line. but officers are not giving any other details. we do not know if the driver was distracted or had a medical condition. there are reports that he may have been trying to avoid another car. for my next hour of "mornings on 2," we'll continue to look into the background of both of these drivers involved in the deadly crash. we'll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available. tori? >> all right. thank you, pam. fed-ex issued this statement "our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the tragic accident on i-5 in california. we are cooperating fully with authorities as they investigate." our team coverage on this crash continues at the top of the hour here on "mornings on 2." we'll be live from a relief, a temporary relief center in orland where several survivors spent the night. we'll also find out how the community is coming together in the face of this tragedy.

breakthroughs and that and underwater ping detected yesterday probably did not come from that missing plane. a bay area engineer may play a pivotal role in helping to recover the black boxes. grand hawk built this machine. it may look like a submarine but it's an underwater plane. when the malaysian plane went down, he was asked to help out in the search. once the crews pinpoint the location of the black boxes, hawk's underwater technology loaded with high-tech cameras may help in retrieving the black boxes. the coast guard has suspended the search for a teen swept out to sea at sttion -- at san francisco's ocean beach. researchers searched for the 14- year-old. on wednesday, a surfer, a teenaged surfer, pulled the missing teen's father and cousin from the water. they both jumped in to try to save the 14-year-old when he was pulled out to sea by a rip

current. the cousin was not severely injured. we have made called to the hospital to check on the father. at last word, he was in critical condition. a 3-year-old boy remains in critical condition at san francisco general hospital this morning after bething hit by a pickup truck. it happened shorely after noon at 43rd and fulton in the city's richmond district. both police and neighbors say this is a very dangerous intersection. a tiny bicycle is now evidence in this tragic case. police say the little boy was riding it across the intersection slightly ahead of his family when he was truck by a pickup truck making a turn on a green light. >> we do know that the child was a few feet in front of the rest of the rupe. we also -- group. we also know that all parties had a green light at this intersection. >> i call it the fulton speedway. it's a death trap, that corner. >> police say the driver remained at the scene and is

contusions, bumps, pain. >> we continue to follow this morning's developing news. tragedy on interstate 5 north of sacramento. ten people are now dead after a bus filled with high school students on a college tour crashes and bursts into flames. now investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong. the ntsb is sending a rapid response team to the scene just a few hours ago, investigators spoke before leaving washington, d.c. >> we're gonna be investigating the human, the machine and the environment and what's critical for us especially in highway accidents is for us to collect perishable information, the kind of information that goes away very quickly. >> the ntsb is picking up investigators in texas and will then continue on here to california. they are expected to arrive sometime this afternoon. >> those students were coming from the los angeles area going up to humboldt state university for a campus tour this weekend.

now, many of those students are at hospitals being treated. students who were not hurt, they spent the night hat a temporary shelter -- at a temporary shelter nearby. tara moriarty is joining us live outside of the relief center where the community is come together. >> reporter: we're seen a lot of people trickle in and out. most of them are dropping off doughnuts, juice, milk, things like that. if you take a look behind me, you can see this is the red cross shelter here. those people are law enforcement officials that you do see. we did see a couple. they appear to be relatives of a crash survivor. we're not able to talk to them. the media is not allowed inside. there are a half-dozen crash survivors here waiting for their parents to come here. we're a couple of miles from the school site. school officials have been working through the night trying to identify those killed and notify their families. this horrific tragedy unfolded after 5:30 when a southbound

fed-ex truck crossed the grassy median and slammed into the bus head on. both the truck and bus drivers died as well as five students and three chaperons. witnesses say the imooped sounded like a -- impact sounded like a series of explosions. the bus was taking the students to visit humboldt. the school president has been up all night visiting survivors. >> most of them seem quite well. we were in redding and saw some people up there in redding, too. there were several that were, i thought, moderately badly injured. i understand some of the people that are -- were in worse shape have been moved elsewhere but these young people here seemed to -- at least the ones we were able to talk to seem to be doing quite well. >> reporter: 34 survivors were taken to the hospitals. the coroner has removed the badly burned bodies. investigators took measurements and now they are in the process

it has been almost a year and still there have been no arrests in the sabotage attack on a south bay pg&e substation. but investigators are hoping a $500,000 reward will entice someone to come forward. this is video of someone firing on the substation last april causing millions of dollars in damage. whoever cut the fiberoptic lines and hit the transformer with more than a dozen rounds, temporarily cut off service to 911. >> it was a pretty big attack on a major substation. i think that -- and -- that opened a lot of our eyes in the industry as to what we need to do to get better to improve. >> pg&e and at&t are each offering a $250,000 reward. pg&e has improved security measures around the metcalf substation as part of its $100 million effort to increase security at all substations. 8:09.

one bay area college has plans to bring in some money. this is stirring a backlash in fremont. the community college announced plans to lease land to housing developers along mission boulevard with hopes of making about $600,000 a year. critics are saying more homes would mean more families sending their kids who already pack fremont schools. >> we have 1800 students in the district where there isn't a seat in their neighborhood school for them. >> well, the community college district board is expected to make a decision that development plan next wednesday. 8:10 you might be surprised at how much or how little larry ellison earned last year citing a business report. the chronicle says the head of oracle made a single dollar in salary in 2013. but here's the catch -- when you combine stocks and other benefits, ellison's total compensation last year reached $78 million.

to stop during a dangerous high- speed chase. at one point they say he nearly crashed his car carrying -- crashed into a car carrying a father and his children. it's still not clear if martinez was armed. the city of san francisco celebrating a big victory in a big legal battle over a special hotel tax. yesterday a judge ruled the city can keep about $13 million it recently collected in short- term hotel taxes. that money came from airlines that have crews staying at hotels during stop overs in san francisco. several major airlines targed the tax was illegal and unfairly singled out airline employees. this is a new idea. amazon is taking on a new approach for workers who aren't happy with their jobs. amazon is paying them to leave the company. it's part of the pay to quit program. amazon says it hopes employees are happy working there. but if they are not, amazon will pay them a po fuss nus to

this amazing story. >> reporter: this high school senior used twitter and social media to describe this traumatic experience yesterday. a bus trip that ended with a deadly crash on i-5. early yesterday morning, jonathan gutierrez tweeted out this photo at the beginning of the trip. this is a bus taking he and other l.a. area students up to humboldt state for a college visit. during the 12-hour ride, the teen tweeted out a picture the he says he chose to sit in a back row and it was a decision that may have saved his life. suddenly this bus was hit head on by a big rig. he said he felt screams and felt the impact. this is a photo taken on the side of the freeway. he tweeted this out after climbing out of a window to escape the burning bus. that post read, can't believe this just happened. i was asleep and the next thing you know i was jumping ut 0 for my wife. he sent out this selfie from the hospital where he and other

old frederick ernst as he was heading home from his evening walk. investigators say the driver is cooperating with authorities but is traumatized by what happened. police are investigating whether sunlight may have briefly blinded that driver since the accident happened while she was driving into a sunset. a former caseworker at the glide foundation accused of steeling more than $121,000 from a san francisco-based charity. lydia george was arrested yesterday in sacramento. authorities say she used her position to smitt fake applications for emergency housing aid from the chronicle seasons of sharing fund. over a one-year starting, starting in 2010. seasons of sharing is a charity that provides rentable help for the elderly, single parents and the disabled. the investigation started when an agency employee noticed george used her sister's name

our top story -- the bus crash near chico. los angeles area students were headed to humboldt state on a college tour when a fed-ex truck slammed head on into their bus. this morning some of the survivors who escaped injury are resting at a relief shelter in orland. tara moriarty is live at the shelter with how the community is coming together to face this tragedy. >> reporter: well, we speak to a red cross volunteer earlier this morning. she had tears in her eyes when she came out. she had been up all night with the students there. this is a traumatic experience for everyone involved. she brought stuffed animals for the high school students. she realized they were in high school but just wanted them to have something to hold onto until their parents were able to get here. you can see this is the red

cross shelter that's a couple of miles from the crash site. the horrific tragedy unfolded after 5:30 last night when a southbound fed-ex truck crossed the grassy median and slammed into the bus head on. both the truck and the bus drivers died as well as five students and three chaperons. witnesses say the impact sounded like a series of explosions. the bus was taking students from various los angeles high schools to visit humboldt state university. the school president has been up all night visiting survivors. >> to see young people get hurt or in this case some of them were actually killed. that's a real tragedy. we wanted to do everything we could to help the young people that had survived the accident and to ensure them that if they were interested in coming to the university, we would be very much interested in arranging for them to come up in the future when they've had a chance to survive. >> reporter: 34 survivors were taken to the hospitals. the coroner removed nine bodies

from the wreckage. another person died at the hospital. they took measurements earlier this morning. you can see the skid marks. they extend about 100 yards down the pavement getting a better look now that it's light out. they are in the process of towing the bus and truck away. the chp is estimating that i-5 northbound will not be opened for, you know, eight least another -- least another 15 minutes. the glenn county sheriff's office will have a press conference this morning. it will be run by the chp at 10:00 this morning in willows. one of the questions that might be answered is what was that fed-ex truck carrying? they carry all sorts of things. according to fire officials we talked to, diesel trucks don't normally explode and ignite when they crash. obviously we're hoping to learn more about what led up to the crash. we're live in orland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, tara. as tara said, more information will undoubtedly come out of that news conference. in the meantime we're checking

the backgrounds of the companies involved in this tragedy. pam cook is in the studio with more on that. >> as investigators are looking into what happened, we are looking into the people and companies involved. now, here's what we've learned so far about the bus company -- it's called silverado stages. it has 142 drivers and a pretty good safety record. it has had two crashes, one with an injury, one tow away, neither were fatal. three inspection violations which appear to be for being overweight. and one driver violation for not having a medical certificate. now, silverado stages has a statement on the website that reads "silverado stages is helping the authorities in gathering information regarding the tragic accident that occurred on thursday evening. our top priority is making sure that the injured are being cared for. our authorities and prayers are the injured, their families and everyone affected by this accident." now, the bus driver and the fed- ex driver were both killed in

that accident. the chp says the bus and the truck were on opposite sides of the freeway, when the truck doctored the median and slammed into the bus. we don't know if the truck driver was disth straked or had -- distracted or had a medical problem. the fed-ex spokesperson does not know what was inside the truck at the time. investigators say the truck driver might have been trying to avoid a passenger car also involveled in the crash. fed-ex has issued a statement "our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this tragic accident on i-5 in california. we're cooperating fully with authorities as they investigate." we'll be following all of the developing news in the story throughout the morning and the noon news as well as online at ktvu.com. we want to check back in with sal. see what's happening on the bay roads this morning, sal. >> we've had a pretty decent

bail. she has a court appearance set for next month. 8:55. zoo exhibit is closed this morning after seven very clever chimpanzees escaped their enclosure yesterday. according to the kansas city zoo director, propped a log on the wall and climbed on top. six other chimpanzees knolled his lead. it took -- followed his lead. it took zoo workers about a half-hour to get them back into captivity. they lured them back not with bananas but with chocolate candy. >> they may have had to use malted milk balls at the end. >> work every time -- works every time. workers will be combing through the exhibit to make sure there's nothing else they can get their hands on to attempt another daring escape. this is not the first time they've escaped at the zoo. ten years ago, high winds took
