we begin with the tragedy on interstate 5. we have updates on the bus crash where at least ten people were killed and several high school students. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we're hearing new details about the crash and the rapid response by emergency crews to reach and care for the injured passengers. alex savidge is in the newsroom with new information released just in the past couple of hours. >> good afternoon. chp officers just updated their investigation a short time ago. they are going over safety records, doing mechanical checks as they try to figure out what led to this deadly crash last night. authorities now say five of the ten victims were students from l.a. area high schools. that charter bus was taken the teens on a college visit. investigators gathered evidence throughout the night at the scene of this deadly

crash along i-5 near chico. late this morning, the charred wreckage of the bus and tractor- trailer were removed from the roadway. and in a morning news conference, chp investigators said there are trying to figure out why the driver of the fed- ex truck lost control on the freeway yesterday and slammed head on into this charter bus that was filled with high school students. >> we don't know whether the fed-ex driver had fallen asleep, whether he experienced a mechanical failure with his vehicle or whether there was a separate collision on the southbound side that caused him to lose control. we'll be looking into determining how exactly that happened. >> federal investigators will also be looking into this deadly wreck. a team from the ntsb boarded a plane first thing this morning in washington, d.c. headed here to california. the charter bus was carrying high school seniors from all around the l.a. area and was going to visit humboldt state university. the president of the cal state system said the victims would

have been the first in their families to attend college. >> we're doubly saddened by the fact many of them are first generation and students from low income who have done all of the right academic things and had their dream of going to humboldt take state taken away. >> of the ten people killed, five were students, three chaperons, the other victims, the drivers of the bus and the big rig. more than 30 people were rushed to various hospitals after the crash. some of them with serious burns. many survivors say they kicked out windows to escape the burning bus. >> the coroner in glenn county said because many of those victims were badly turned, it may take some time to positively identify them. the chp also said they are still looking for witnesses in this case. anyone who may have been driving in that area and saw what happened in the moments before that truck lost control. we're live this afternoon in the newsroom, alex savidge,

ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. remarkable stories from this crash are surfacing on social media. jonathan gutierrez tweeted this self--- selfie tweeted this picture. he tweeted a photo of a bus early yesterday morning before he and other students left to go up to humboldt state. during the 12-hour ride, the teen tweeted out a picture from on board the bus. he chose to sit in the back row, a decision that may have saved his life. suddenly, his bus was hit head on by a big rig. he said he heard screams and felt the impact. he tweeted this photo after climbing out of a window to escape the burning bus. that post read, can't believe this just happened. i was asleep and next thing you know, i was jumping out for my life. the 17-year-old had only a few cuts and bruises and wanted to let everyone know he was okay. the los angeles unified school district says the trip was not organized by the

district. school officials say they've been working to identify which of their students went on this trip. >> very saddened by this traffic accident. very tragic. but we currently have three groups heading to the crash site now to meet with parents. meet with students to focus on giving these students -- gebting these students back -- getting these students back to l.a. >> 19 were from los angeles schools. they say two other buses were traveling and have arrived at humboldt state. we're learning more about the companies involved in the tragedy. here's what we've learned about the bus company. it's called silverado stages. it has 142 drivers and a good safety record. it's had two crashes one with an injury, one towaway. neither were fatal. three violations, one for

the miami police department. two of his teammates have court hearings today for their own legal troubles. janine de la vega join us live to tell us about this controversy. >> all of this is not good for the 49ers' image. players often get judged for what they do off the field. one of the attorneys for the player, ail don -- aldon smith was here to discuss driving under the influence and illegal weapons charges. the linebacker is in trouble after sheriff's deputies searched his home and found assault weapons following a party in 2012. in a separate crash, he crashed his car into a tree and was arrested for dui and session of marijuana. smith did not appear in court but has previously pled not guilty. the prosecutor would not discuss whether there were talks of a plea deal.

>> both cases were put over to april 29 for a status hearing. we'll figure out what to do with the cases. the misdemeanor could be set down to the courts for a trial date and the felony could be set for a preliminary hearing. >> reporter: in the next hour and a half, chris culliver's case will be discussed in court. he was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly leaving the scene after he hit a bicyclist and crashed into a witness's car. police say illegal brass knuckles were found in his mustang. yesterday, the reputation of colin kaepernick came into question when tmz reported he was being investigated for possible sexual assault for an alleged incident at a miami hotel last week. ktvu has the police report and in there, there's no mention of sexual assault and police aren't even sure if a crime was committed. with kaepernick being mentioned in the police report and two other 9ers having legal troubles, some fans are worried about the images.

>> it definitely does affect their image. i think there should be counseling or guidance to help these young guys deal with the success, the money, the name they've come into it -- fame they've come into it. when up have a lot of money and time on your hands, you can get into trouble. >> reporter: in the police report, the woman says she did not have sex with kaepernick. he and his teammate, quinton patton, are not facing charges. this morning kaepernick tweeted the charges made in the tmz story and other stories i've seen are completely wrong. they make things up about me that never happened. i take great pride in who i am and what i do but i guess sometimes you have to deal with someone who makes things up. i want to thank all of the people who have shared their encouraging sentiments. i assure you that your faith is not misplaced. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thanks, janine. new at noon -- the transbay

tower has a new name and new tenant thanks to the biggest real estate deal in recent history. city's soon to be tallest building will be called sales force tower. the $564 naming rights deal was announced three hours ago. the cloud commuting company will occupy most of the tower's 61 floors. mayor ed lee and representative nancy pelosi were onhand for the big announcement. >> it's something that serves as an example of the public/private initiatives to work together. >> the deal is also good for san francisco's job market as sales force announced it will add 1,000 jobs as it ramps up for the move. the tower is set to be complete in 2017. harrowing stories coming out of the deadly bus crash near chico. coming up we'll go live and hear from some of the

the woman in charge during the bumpy rollout of the affordable care act is stepping down. kathleen sebeluus routined. kyla campbell reports from washington on the woman who may take care her case. >> reporter: president obama tapped the replacement to replace sbbeluus. she worked for the clinton foundation and the melinda and bill gates foundation. the senate will need to confirm her as seath and human services secretary. just last year, she was confirmed 96-0 to lead the budget office. now she's going into the nomination fight with the weight of obamacare on her shoulders. president obama said today he hopes for a swift approval and that he hopes she has the common sense needed for the job. >> she brings the value of

caring for your neighbor and ordinary folks to some of the biggest challenge of her time. >> reporter: the outgoing human health services secretary is mixed. president obama said today the final score speaks for itself. there are 7.5 million americans enrolled in obamacare. some of them have insurance for the very first time. in washington, kyla campbell. back to you. suspended state senator leland yee is back in court right now for the latest hearing in his corruption case. this is new video of a key figure in the corruption case, keith jackson arriving in court this morning. earlier this week, yee and jackson both pleaded not guilty to charges ranging from wire fraud to conspiracy to illegally importing weapons. this morning, the judge is expected to review the evidence in yee's case. federal prosecutors now say there plan more charges in the case involving a total of 28 defendants but they won't say

whether any of the new charges will be against yee. in south africa, it was another day of intense questioning and courtroom drama in the oscar pistorius murder trial. he faced more relentless cross- examination on the witness stand. once again, prosecutors grilled him about why he shot and killed his girlfriend, reeva steevkamp last year. he maintains he accidentally killed her thinking she was a nighttime intruder in his home. but prosecutors say there are big holes in the story. >> you never said, reeva, listen and make contact with her and tell her what to do. that you didn't do? >> i did tell her what to do. >> you whispered it but you never looked at her and said, reeva, go down. >> i didn't whisper to her, i said it in a soft manner. i was sure there was somebody in my house. >> the trial has been delayed

several times a after he repeatedly broke down and cried on the witness stand. the trial is expected to continue for at least another month. australian authorities are offering conflicting statements as to whether they are close to finding the missing malaysian airlines plane. australian's prime minister told reporters that searchers were very confident recent signals picked up by listening equipment came from one of the plane's black boxes. shortly after the encouraging words, one of the men spearheading the search announced there were no major breakthroughs and that an underwater ping detected yesterday probably didn't come from the missing aircraft. california's record- breaking dry spell may be coming to an end. federal scientists say the weather phenomenon known as el nino could develop in the pacific by the end of the year. that could end the drought with a series of soaking storms next winter. this new prediction comes after scientists reviewed updated

weather models and satellite. california did get some rain in february and march bup the state is still under an -- but the state is still under an official drought emergency. no rain in the forecast for today, although outside our doors we're joined by plenty of gray. mostly cloudy skies giving you a live look there over the east bay. temperatures in the east bay, ranging from the mid-60s to mid- 70s. some of those areas, whammer spots. 74 reported in -- warm spots. 74 in antioch. mid-70s in walnut creek. 66 in livermore. 66 in fairfield. to the north bay where temperatures are struggling still in the upper 50s for napa. 57 in oakland. mid-50s in hayward. half moon bay checking in at 55 into the south bay, 62 degrees for you. for the afternoon, we will remain with mostly cloudy skies. we will break away to partly cloudy for some but just take a look at how widespread it is from one end to the other. low clouds and a mix of high clouds along the coastline for

the rest of us. mid and high level clouds. i want to back up and show you a different perspective where the high clouds are coming from. you can see them just a wide swath over the bay area. this system here working its way towards the southern california coastline bringing us the clouds. it's not going to bring us any rain. but those clouds flaudz to the on -- in addition to the onshore breeze and a cooler air mass pulling in for today as well as tomorrow. i want to take you to the sierra where we do have partly cloudy skies. because we have the weekend ahead of us, because a lot of folks are perhaps thinking about going out to do some skiing, thunderstorms will be in the forecast for sierra for saturday, especially south of i- 80. it's a slight chance but it's there. for today, a mix of sun and clouds. for the afternoon, the onshore breeze will continue and today a few degrees cooler than yesterday. if you are going to see the giants play this evening, bring the jacket. breezy, fog will be rolling back in. 57 degrees at game time. for the rest of us, 73 for santa rosa. 67 in berkeley.

the selloff continues on wall street with bank stocks joining techs in a slide after jpmorgan chase turned into a week report. biotechs being hit. the s&p 500 heading for the worse week since january. the dow is currently down 95. the knack hovering around the 4,000 mark, down 45 and the s&p down 11. you might be surprised at how much or how little larry ellison earned last year, citing a business report, the chronicle says the head of oracle software made just a single dollar in salary in 2013. but here's the catch -- when you combine stocks and other benefits, his total compensation last year reached $78 million. that led all bay area

executives in total earnings. second was john hammergran and in third, mark bennyoff of sales force.com. amazon is taking on a new approach for workers who are not happy with their jobs. they are paying them to leave. it's part of amazon's new pay to quit program. amazon says it hopes all of their employees enjoy their work but if they don't, amazon will give them a bonus to week. people who leave after working one year can get $2,000. that amount increases up to a maximum of $5,000 depending upon how many years you've been with the company. the man who may some day rule the nation. dubai could also help keep the raiders and as in oakland. yesterday, oakland mayor jean quan announced that the prince of dubai is partnering with the developers of a plan called coliseum city. the multi-million dollar proposal would include new stadiums for both the raiders and as as well as a hotel, shops and homes.

larry reed also revealed that quan is not interested in a site near jack london square. now to the continuing coverage of the deadly bus crash. president of humboldt state university spent the early- morning hours visiting survivors of the crash. the university said the students were on their way to attend the annual spring review an event that offers potential students a chance to see the campus. the school's president visited some survivors at a hospital in redding and said the victims were having a difficult time. >> to see young people get hurt, in this case, some were killed, that's a real tragedy. we wanted to come and do everything we can to help the young people that had survived the accident. >> the school's president said the survivors who suffered moderate injuries appear to be doing quite well. flags are flying at half staff on the college campus. victims who suffered minor

injuries were brought to a red cross shelter a couple of miles from the crash site. one red cross volunteer tells us she was up all night with the students. she said even though the kids are in high school, she brought them stuffed animals, so they had something to hold onto until their parents arrived in l.a. our crew out people dropping -- saw people coming by to drop off doughnuts milk and juice. >> they are suffering a -- suffering a lot. i just do a little bit, something i can do. >> we're told there are about half a dozen crash survivors waiting for their parents to arrive. we're hearing stories from the survivers. >> he thought the bus was breaking. when it hit the other truck, it went into flames. everybody was pushing everybody out of the window. >> he cut his arms and legs and everything. >> he fell. somebody picked him up and got
