that horrible crash that killed 10 people, including 5 high school students on i-5 not far from chico. the ntsb just wrapped up a news conference 40 minutes ago. they will be on site for 1-2 weeks collecting hard evidence and witness statements about the crash. again, 10 people are confirmed dead, including two of the students achap roan whose just -- chaperons who just got engaged. >> the crash happened at 5:30 p.m. last night. ktvu's cristina rendon is in the area and joins us now from red bluff where the ntsb gave us an update on the investigation this afternoon. >> reporter: board member says it will take time for investigators to figure out what happened but right now the focus of the investigation is finding out perishable

information, those are things like witness statements because people's memory could get soggy as time passes. they were at the crash site today and they were tasked with a number of things at the scene. [ audio difficulties ] >> all right. we apologize. we lost the audio. i can continue on. the ntsb, they are there. the go team arrived at 9:30 a.m. this morning. they will be looking at the medical conditions, the work, and the rest schedules of the drivers as well as looking at the vehicles to see when they were last inspected or with whether or not there are control modules. they will not speculate to what caused the fedex driver to veer across the median and hit a car and then the tour bus but they want witnesses to help them in

their investigation. >> if you are out there watching this, and you haven't called yet and saw something, we meant to hear from you. that could -- we want to hear from you. that could be very important. this is why we push to find the probable cause and issue safety recommendations. the worse thing is to show up, know we issued recommendations from a previous accident, and show up and find out if those recommendations have been closed and enacted, lives could have been saved. >> the ntsb says they plan to be in orland for one to two weeks gathering information and then it will take time before a report is put together to determine what findings there were and if safety recommendations need to be made. as soon as we get more information we will bring it to you. >> as we mentioned interstate 5 does not have a barrier separating the traffic. caltrans says 25,000 vehicle as

it happened in the last hour in antioch. sources tell ktvu the owner of the store may have shot one of the robbers after they came into the store with guns. it is not clear how many were involved. we have a crew on the way to the scene in antioch. we will have an update on the 10:00 p.m. news. new at 6:00 p.m. leaders say residents are at risk and they intend to take action. the problem, police radios in oakland that don't work, cutting out during emergency or breaking up while officers are inside the police station. a problem that plagued the city for years and now some say it is time to fix the problem. ktvu's paul chambers is in oakland with a possible solution here. >> reporter: police officers are worried that theirroidios could go down leaving the officers and the city vulnerable. >> reporter: every police officer on the streets of

oakland is equipped with their own radio. some consider it their life line, one that may be cut short if things don't get better. >> no one knows when they will fail. >> the radios have a history of crashing on officers. it happened during a shooting, a ace and when president obama came to -- chase and when president obama came to down. >> they need radios they can depend on. >> she is one of the leaders who voted to extend the current contract that handles maintenance and repairs. leaders say there were improvements over the last year. of the calls on the radio, less than 5 problems are reported each day but officers say the fix is only temporary. >> a permanent fix is to move to the regional system and every officer gets a new radio that works. >> reporter: leaders say new
