. welcome to mornings on 2, i'm claudine wong. >> i'm in for mike me back. good morning to you. we have the sun shining in a few spots. it will break away to partly cloudy for the afternoon. look at how widespread it is at this hour. we'll show you no rain to speak of, but we have it from the coastline crossing into and through the bay and into the east bay as well. you can see the santa cruz mountains doing pretty good, fairly well with the sunshining and along with the peninsula this morning. sum of us -- some of us waking up with partly cloudy skies. it looks like you're mostly clear in the morning in santa clara. for the second half of the day temperatures a lot like yesterday. 49 degrees in antioch, if you're going to see the giants

play this afternoon partly cloudy and onshore breeze, 60 degrees, bring along a jacket. temperatures will be around what we saw yesterday. i'll have a look around and i'll have a look on when we expect to see this cloud deck to burn through. we begin our continuing coverage with the deadly bus crash that killed 5 high school seniors on their way to a tour of hum bolt state. the wreckage has finally been removed. investigators will return to the crash site. the notice will do research on seeing what caused the wreck and what speed they were going. they'll look to see what can prevent future crashes like a barrier if that would have helped. people are coming together in

the wake of this tragedy. >> reporter: this tragedy is shared across the community. >> it was hard, i knew red cross would be called. it was hard to see it. >> reporter: she never expected a crisis like this to happen in her town as soon as something happens, the whole community turns out. >> reporter: he was greeted in his parents arms after being caught with dozens of others in the window. the fedex truck is on fire, and we're going to blowup in any second. >> he escaped in an emergency window. >> lucky is an understatement. i'm so thankful i'm here. i don't know how to describe it. >> reporter: they're trying to identify the victims. among the dead is a college recruiter, a monty high school senior and chaperone and his

fiancee are among the unaccounted for. >> the response of the community when an event happens is overwhelming. >> the kindness has not gone unnoticed. they are thanking the community for their help on a banner they left behind. >> i'm glad it's over and the kids that are here are on their way home. >> a few students are in the hospital recuperating, but others are flying home to los angeles. sending them home in chartered vans may have caused more distress. we have posted more on our website. there are video clips and a video of the crash scene as well as more on the ntsb investigation. ktvu's reporter ali has

more. >> reporter: there are residents with 8 to 10 homes, they had to be evacuated. they got out of there until pg&e crews could come and turn the gas off. they're still out here. they're assessing some of the damage. they're getting ready to cut into some of the pavement here. check out the brick corner on the side of this home. it's bent and part of the brick is crumbling. the car that slammed into this house has been towed away. this home is on kylie boulevard in prune ridge. an elderly woman appears to have mistook the gas pedal for the brake and accelerated into the corner of the home. no one was injured in this. >> i heard a loud screech and jumped out of bed and called 911, a couple who were driving past stopped by and there were

no injuries, and we're thankful. >> now, the driver was able to walk away from this crash uninjured, no one inside the home was injured, and we spoke briefly off camera to the homeowner this morning, he was to talk on camera. he and his family thought there had been an earthquake because the entire house shook when the car slammed into it. he's glad no one was injured in this. the car hit a gas meter which caused a gas leak for 20 minutes until pg&e got here. they evacuated some of the homes in the area. they have an excavator and heavy equipment. we're watching them to dig in and break in the pavement of the neighbor's driveway here. we've asked pg&e what scene they have to do. they'll be here half a day. they can't give us any more specifics than that.

we have a call to pg&e media line to find out more specifically what kind of work needs to be done out here. new this morning, a fire in san jose that destroyed a garage and two darci is under investigation. san jose fire department tweeted this picture of the flames. it started just before 12:30 this morning in a detached garage on puritan place. it took 30 minutes to put the fire out. no homes were damaged and no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is not known, it appears to be accidental. candles from a birthday cake may have started a fire in san francisco. it happened on third avenue, just before 11:00. no one was seriously hurt but a firefighter twisted his ankle while fighting the fire. candles from a birthday cake were not fully put out before being thrown into a trash can.

a suspected robber was dead and another person wounded. this happened near a jeweler's. two masked men and walked into a store and one shot a customer and a gun battle erupted when the owner fought back. he had a weapon and fired the subject with a gun. both subjects fled the store. >> the injury to the customer is not life-threatening. they're looking for surveillance video in the area for the second suspect who escaped. a woman was seriously injured in a crash in napa. that accident happened on highway 12, and killed her 4- year-old son. the woman's boyfriend crossed into oncoming traffic and hit another car head on. the boy was killed despite being strapped in a booster seat in the back.

it injured the passenger in another car. today's fundraiser is a bake sale. it's being held in napa and proceeds will be given to the kirk family. they're dealing with a bug bed infestations on its trains. they found this after taking bart and they've removed that train from service and it underwent a thorough cleaning. uc berkeley will open its doors to thousands of students and their parents. it's known as counting. there are more than 300 events happening today. ment event ovens students a chance to experience campus life for a day. it's free to the public and goes to 4:00 this afternoon. there could be extended

meter hours. city officials are considering the increase to accommodate high began for parking spaces. many of the city's parking meters are free until 6:00 p.m., they will keep the meters running until 8:00 tonight. the change would go into effect later this year. they'll operating postal counters in stores. now, according to the american postal workers union, staples has a deal to operate postal counters at 80 of its stores. last month it will close 225 north american stores because of declining sales. it proves it's a bad idea to turn public services over to private companies. more and more bay areas are stashing up luxury condos in san francisco. data quick reports many of the condos are sold before they even hit the market.

. computer outage at the international space station might require astronauts to make a space walk. the outside of the orbiting lab is not responding to commands. the computer is needed for a visit by the supply ship. mission control are trying to decide if it can be repaired or replaced. the main computer is working fine and the six man crew is not in danger. >> doctors have downgraded the condition of one of the teenagers wounded at a mass stabbing at a pennsylvania high school. alex hribal is accused of

monday and it ends in los angeles today. now, for the search ever the missing malaysia airlines flight 370. they are discussing the search with leaders. tony abbot repeated his comment yesterday, they picked up under water signals from the missing plane. he warned that it will take a long time before that plane is actually located. >> what we are now doing is trying to get as many detections as we can, so that we can locate, so that we can narrow the search area down to as small an area as possible. >> it is believed the plane is at the bottom of the southern indiana ocean some 3 miles deep. time is running out as the battery from the signals last about a month. >> they're investigating the general motors recall and has

now released 250,000 recalled documents. the documents show gm was aware of the ignition switch problem more than ten years before issuing a recall. the gm ceo said she did not know about the problem until december 2013. the recall was issued at 2014. a gm spokesman said none of are the documents contradict the ceo's testimony. the investigation is on going. 100 people will walk from pittsburgh to martinez in the first of walks aimed at bay area refineries. this will happen with one walk scheduled every month. it's designed to call attention to the public health and refinery issues such as martinez. it begins with a rally and it will end at the martinez waterfront park. your time is 7:17. rosemary will join us, now, with a look at how our saturday

seeing partly cloudy skies for the santa cruz mountains. i'm picking it up over the peninsula, we're dealing with mostly cloudy skies. right over the stretch here, these small communities, san mateo into wood side, it's short of palo alto. we'll begin to see this clear out, partly cloudy away from the coastline today. let's start with the bay area. by 11:00 or so notice it's peeling back. we're gray along the coast and in throughout the afternoon we'll be partly cloudy and mostly cloudy for the coastline today. notice we're socked in here, but i want to point you to the sierra as well. notice we got rain showers popping up here. the possibility of thunderstorms as well, it looks like it's south, of south lake toronto. maybe skiing for your weekend, just that to be aware of. it's a slight chance, it should not bother you, but in any case

i want you to know that it is out there. having to do with that low spining to the east of los angeles this morning. temperatures a lot like yesterday, 53 for san francisco, we have 56 in oakland and afternoon highs for today, a repeat, some of us a tad cooler. 67 for vallejo, 65 in observing, and low 07s in antioch and brentwood. many of us still above average for this time of year. your extended forecast always in view. tomorrow will be slightly warmer we'll hold to that through monday. we begin a cooling trend once again by tuesday into wednesday, but notice no rain in the forecast. the next several days will be dry and fairly mild. >> the f.b.i. has recovered a valuable art collection in the bay area and it's on its way home to the

government. a representative was joined at a news conference yesterday. they explained how the artist had willed her paintings to the polish museum and her family kept all the pieces. >> the government had asked us to try to reach out for one of the family members here in the bay area and see if he was aware of the location of the paintings. >> well, that family member agreed to turn over the paintings as long as the f.b.i. paid for them to be shipped. the collection is worth about $1 million and it will go on display in switzerland later this year. they could get a deal on a gown while working to support breast cancer. they're making a stop at crow canyon commons. more than a thousand designer dresses will be on sale for up

approached a new jersey organization called little kids rock and asked for a donation of guitars. >> this is life transforming. all the students can be play the guitar, they're great at it. they can play it throughout their life. it's the greatest thing that can happen. >> they partner with schools across the country with the goal that they have access to music programs. it's known of the breathtaking views of the golden gate bridge. the online travel site trip advisor ranked them in the category. san francisco was third in the national rankings and 25. they named golden gate park as

fiery bus. it clipped a car before slamming into the bus in the afternoon. the fedex truck was already on fire, they say, before it hit the bus. >> the fedex truck was already on fire. >> yeah, it was. it was coming straightforward. >> it was like a 3d movie. imagine a mac truck coming out of a movie. >> five adults and five teenagers were killed. some survivors escaped the burning bus by kicking out the windows. >> we got on the southbound side, everyone was laying on the grass, people were out of it, people were crying, people were like pulling their hair, people were screening. >> instead of returning home in a vehicle, some students are flying back to southern california. the ntsb will return to the crash site this morning.

they'll be gathering information for the next two weeks. it could take months before they determine a cause. the bus was travelling behind a rental car heading north on interstate five when that fed fed swerved across that grassy median and sideswiped the car and slammed head on into the bus and burst into flames. there is a median but not a physical barrier. there are numerous crossover accidents. they wonder now why there isn't a concrete wall. they base their decision by traffic. they say it's not heavily trafficked area. it could cost billions of dollars. they wonder if whether charter buses have safety regulations. some consumer advocates some regulations have not kept up

with the booming motor coach business. it is estimated that 29,000 motor coaches carry 700 million passengers a year. that's comparable to the domestic airline industry. they'll look at whether new safety standards are needed. >> we have things to focus on suppression, material designs of those systems. we're going to look at open recommendations. >> two investigators examined the 2012 motor coach enhanced safety act. it calls on the secretary of transportation to develop new recommendations for passenger safety. it calls for mandatory seatbelts, antiejection measures and they recommend improving fire protection measures. they announced charter buses

must have seatbelts. we invite you to have our web page where we post images of the crash scene and an update on the investigation. . new this morning a natural gas scare in the south bay. a car hit a house damaged the front yard of another and clipped a gas line. residents were forced to evacuate their homes. >> reporter: it happened just after 2:00 this morning. santa clara police tell us a woman heading southbound on kylie boulevard in santa clara and accelerated into the home here. you can see some of the damage, the car has been towed away. you can take a look at the brick facade. it's bent and crumbling. they have an excavator out here and they're getting ready to do work out here. the gas meter had a gas leak and it caused them to evacuate

ten homes. everyone was allowed to go back home by 3 this morning. no one was injured in this. the driver was able to walk away from it. >> i heard the screaching of the tires, then i felt the shake when the car hit the house next door. >> reporter: no one inside the home was injured. we spoke briefly off camera for the home this morning, he explained that he and his family had first thought there had been an earthquake, much lies his neighbor described. the whole house shook, his home and the home next door are without gas this morning. i take up back out here live, i can show you the pg&e crews doing their work out here. they have about half a day of work ahead. they have to dig up the pavement in the driveway and the neighbors home to check the integrity of the main gas line underneath these homes. they have these big excavator

out here. the good news out here is no one was injured, the driver wasn't home and we're live in santa clara channel 2 ktvu news. >> two women have been arrested and two men were charged for running of it. they were alerted about suspicious activity. several men were visiting the unit and a variety of women being brought in and out. two women who were rescued were ages 20 and 31. >> they both had been in the country for a short period of time. they both had family in central america. these women get caught up and get made false promises and get kind of forced into this whole life. >> police say before running the apartment brothel, the suspects conducted the ring out of a storage space in the

neighborhood. the space was locked from the inside and stopped the activity. three weeks after an elderly pedestrians was killed in a hit-and-run suv, san francisco police arrested the driver. it happened at visitation avenue and bay shore boulevard. this woman hit an 80-year-old woman and they passed the victim again. they were able to identify the driver by surveillance video and she was taken into custody. they need the public's help catching an arsonist. this shows a man in oakland standing near a building on 53rd street at 2:30 a.m. april 4th. soon after that building caught fire. the building belongs to uscf children's hospital oakland. the man in the video is described as white male about

30 to 40 years old with dark hair that's balding. may have a goatee. a yacht race around the world sounds dramatic enough. when a sailor goes overboard it's a life or death situation. we have amazing video of the daring ocean rescue and the moment that sailor arrived in san francisco. responding to parents concerns about sexual assaults on elementary school campuses. we report three incidents at three different schools in january and march. the same man may be responsible. police tell us they're frustrating it took weeks to find out what was happening. they sent a letter to parents they're increasing security. the letter asked for help. we're asking every school community and parents and school staff to work together to keep their schools extra safe. happening today more than 325 people will be taking part in a disaster response drill in san francisco. the san francisco fire department will be joined by neighbors of the neighborhood response team by everett and they'll be practicing techniques and setting up command centers. the event kicks off this morning and will continue until 3 this afternoon. a plan to build a suicide

forecast, coming up. . we begin this morning with our continuing coverage of the deadly bus crash that killed 10 people, including five high school seniors, on their way to a tour of humboldt state. the burned wreckage of the fedex truck and the charter bus have been removed. today, investigators will return to the crash site and the ntsb will look for an electronic control module from the fedex truck that will tell investigators how fast it was going and if the driver hit the brakes hard. not only will investigators look for what caused the wreck, but they will also be looking to see if anything should be done to avoid future crashes, including if a barrier down the median would have helped. ktvu's christina rendon has more on how orland residents are coming together in the wake of this tragedy. >> reporter: orland high school's message to the victims of the fatal bus crash is one shared across this small community. >> it was pretty hard. we could see t i knew as soon as i saw the bus, i knew red

cross would be called. >> reporter: this woman is a red cross volunteer who never expected a crisis like this to happen in her town. >> i don't know how to explain it. the whole community turned out. >> reporter: this student was greeted in his parents' arms, after being caught with dozens of others in the horrific fer know. >> the fedex bus was already on fire, so i knew we were going to blow up any time. >> reporter: he escaped through an emergency window through the back of the bus. >> blessed is an understatement. i don't have a word to describe how i feel. i'm so thankful i'm here. >> reporter: investigators are trying to identify the victims. among the dead, a college recruiter, a chaperone and his fiance, among the unaccounted for. several more victims are being treated at area hospitals. >> the response from the community when an event like this happens has been overwhelming. >> reporter: the kindness isn't going unnoticed. students at the orland red

cross shelter couldn't leave without thanking the people of glenn county for their help on a banner they left behind. >> i'm glad it's over and the kids that are here are on their way home. >> that was christina rendon reporting from orland. a few students are still in the hospital, recuperating. many others are flying back home to los angeles. school officials say sending them home in chartered vans may have caused them more distress. we posted more information on ktvu.com. there are video clips and images of the crash scene, as well as the entire update from the chp on the investigation. new this morning, a fire in san jose that destroyed a garage and two cars is under investigation. the san jose fire department sent us this video of the flames. it started just before 12:30 this morning in a detached garage on puritan place. a second garage was also damaged. it took about 30 minutes to put the fire out. no homes were damaged and no one was hurt. the exact cause of that fire is still not known, but firefighters say it does appear

to be accidental. the south san francisco police department is warning people about a recent scam. they say last month, the scammer called a 52-year-old resident, claiming to be david black from the united states sweepstakes. the scammer had the victim's social security and credit card numbers and said the sweepstakes had paid her credit card bill. she checked her credit card balance and believed the scammer when she saw it was zero. police learned the scammer had used money from her own bank cat to pay her balance. residents in santa clara have been allowed to return to their homes following a scare. it could take pg&e crews hours to fix the problem. ktvu's allie rasmus is live in santa clara where the mess started when a vehicle jumped a curb and ended up wedged between two houses. allie, what's happening right now? >> reporter: well, ken, you can see the path this car took before it crashed into this home. the tire tracks go up onto the

curb. the car plowed through two stone pillars that were right in front of this walkway, went on, ripped up the yard, then headed into the corner of this home on kylie boulevard near prone ridge. you see where the brick facade is crumbling. that's where the car struck. the car ended up looking like it was parallel parked between the two homes. the driver wasn't injured. in fact, she was able to walk away from the crash with only a seat belt bruise. no one in the house was hurt. santa clara police say an elderly driver was heading south on kylie and prone ridge in santa clara when they believe she mistook the gas pedal for the brake and accelerated towards the home. >> it was a screech and a shaking of the house. i got up, called 911 and then ran outside to make sure everything was okay. what was it? it was definitely not an earthquake. >> reporter: when the car crashed into the house, it took out the gas meter, causing a gas leak, which prompted santa clara police to evacuate people in about eight to 10 homes in

the area as a precaution. everyone was allowed back in their homes by 3:00 this morning after pg&e shut off the gas. a neighbor told us she's not sure what it is about the street, whether it's the speed limit or the curvature of the road, but she says 10 years ago, another elderly driver plowed into her garage. >> this happened to us. it's happened to my husband, who's been here 40 years. he said it's happened, like, 10 times. one time there was a car on top of the neighbor's car here, literally drove on top of it. >> reporter: pg&e crews have finished digging a hole about three feet deep to restore gas in the home where the accident happened. crews had to check the main gas line underground to make sure it's structurally sound and it wasn't leaking. it appears there are no problems and gas should be restored to these two homes later this afternoon. live in santa clara, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. bart is dealing with a possible bedbug infestation on

one of its trains. bart says a passenger reported possible bedbug bites after taking bart from oakland to san francisco thursday morning. bart has removed that train from service and says it underwent a thorough cleaning. a gun battle at a jewelry store in antioch has left a suspected robber dead and a customer wounded. it happened around 4:30 yesterday afternoon at harding jewelers on delta fair boulevard. two masked men walked into the store, according to police, and one shot a customer who was with her husband and child. police say a gun battle erupted when the store owner fought back. >> the owner came from the rear. he had a weapon and fired it at the subject with the gun. both subjects fled the store. >> police say the injury to the customer is not life threatening and investigators are looking for surveillance video in the area to help in their search for the second suspect, who did escape. a fund-raiser is being held today in napa for a woman seriously injured in a crash that killed her 4-year-old son.

that accident happened last sunday on highway 12. authorities say for some unknown reason, the woman's boyfriend crossed into oncoming traffic and hit another car, head-on. the boy was killed, despite being strapped into a booster seat in the back. his mom has undergone several operations and more are to come. the crash also injured renowned chef cindy paulson, who was a passenger in another car. today's fund-raiser is a bake sale and car wash, held from noon until 3:00 p.m. at the blue oak middle school campus on hay street in napa. proceeds will go to the kirk family. parking meters in berkeley could soon have extended meter hours. city officials say they are considering the increase as a way to accommodate high demand for parking spaces. right now, many of the city's parking meters are free after 6:00 p.m. the new proposal would keep the parking meters running until 8:00 at night. if city officials decide to extend meter hours, the change would go into effect later this year. well, today, union workers will protest the proposal to

operate postal counters in staples stores. this is video of a similar protest held in january. according to the american postal workers union, staples has a deal to operate postal counters at more than 80 of its stores, but last month, staples announced it will close 225 north american stores. the union president says this proves that it's a bad idea to turn public services over to private companies. today's protest begins at 11:00 on shag avenue in berkeley. well, bay area principal under investigation for allegations of misconduct. the comments he's accused of making to students that are leaving some parents to say he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a school. >> the truthiness is, anyone can read the news to you. i promise to feel the news at you. . president obama says the republican party is threatening voter rights in the united states. he made the statement yesterday in new york at a conference held by the national action network. he denounced republican efforts to pass voting restrictions such as photo id laws. the president told the crowd the right to vote in the u.s. is under bigger threat now than at any time since the voting rights act passed in 1965. president obama's new choice to lead the health and human services department is expected to easily win senate approval. during a white house news conference, the president thanked outgoing secretary kathleen sebelius and introduced his nominee, sylvia matthews burwell. sebelius stepped down after being criticized for months for the rollout problems with the affordable care act website. burwell, who is the current white house budget director is known for being a hands-on

continuing coverage of the fiery bus crash near orland. there could be a new twist in the investigation. police say the fedex truck clipped a car before heading into the bus thursday this afternoon. now the couple in the car say the fedex truck was already on fire before it even hit the bus. >> the fedex truck was already on fire? >> yeah, it was. i looked over and saw the fedex truck coming straight for me. >> it was like a 3d movie. imagine a mack truck coming out of a movie. >> the crash killed five adults and five teenagers. the high school students were headed to humboldt state for a tour of the campus. some survivors escaped the burning bus by kicking out the windows. >> we all crossed the interstate 5 and got on the southbound side and after that, everyone just, like, was laying on the grass. people were out of it t people were crying, like pulling their hair, screaming. >> oh, my god! >> instead of returning home in a vehicle, some students are flying back to southern california. the ntsb will return to the crash site this morning.

investigators expect they will be gathering information over the next two weeks, but warn it could take months to determine a cause. and this animation gives us a better idea of the moments leading up to that deadly crash. now, the bus was traveling behind that red rental car headed north on interstate 5. that fedex truck traveling south swerved across the grassy median, sideswiped the car, then slammed head-on into the bus, which is then burst into flames. >> the crash happened on a stretch of interstate 5 where there's a median, but not a physical barrier. authorities in glenn county report numerous cross-over accidents. this latest wreck have people wondering where there is not a concrete wall. cal trans bases its decision by the volume of traffic and that this section of i-5 is not considered a heavily traveled area. erecting a physical barrier could also cost the state tens of billions of dollars. this deadly crash is also raising questions about whether federal safety regulations for charter buses are sufficient.

2 investigators pored over the federal laws that apply to buses. some regulations have not kept up with the booming motor coach business. it's estimated that 29,000 motor coaches carry 700 million passengers a year. that's comparable to the domestic airline industry. the ntsb says it will consider whether new charter bus safety measures are needed. >> we have recommendations that have specifically focused on detection, suppression, and the materials and design of those systems. so this is one of those instances where we will be looking at our open recommendations. >> 2 investigates the 2012 motor coach enhanced safety act. it calls on the secretary of transportation to develop new regulations for passenger safety. recommendations included mandatory seat belts, improved roof strength, antiejection measures, and avoiding roll- over crashes. the act also recommends improving fire prevention measures, but so far, only one of these regulations has been

passed. last november, federal officials announced that new charter buses must have seat belts. >> we invite you to check our web page at ktvu.com where we posted more video clips and images of the crash scene, as well as the entire chp update on the investigation. well, a pair of homes in the south bay still do not have natural gas this morning after a car crash. the accident triggered a gas disair in the neighborhood. allie rasmus has been following the story all morning long. she joins us from santa clara with an update. good morning, allie. >> reporter: good morning, claudine. crews are still working to restore power to the two homes affected. we talked off camera briefly with the homeowner that this car crashed into, who told us that he and his family first thought there had been an earthquake because the entire house shook when the car slammed into the corner of the garage. no one in that home was hurt. the driver walked away with only a seat belt bruise on her collarbone. you can see where the car jumped up onto the curb. there's track marks here on the pavement. there are two stone pillars here that the car plowed

through before going across the lawn into that home with the brick facade over there. the car looked like it was parallel parked between the two homes. >> at least maybe that slowed her down. maybe she could have done more damage to the neighbor's home or even gone into the home. we are so fortunate and the first responders cleared everyone away and it could have been so much worse. >> santa clara police say an elderly driver was heading south on kylie and prone ridge in santa clara at 2:00 this morning, when they believe she mistook the gas pedal for the brake and accelerated towards the home. when the car crashed into the house, it also took out the gas meter in the side of the home. that caused a gas leak, which prompted santa clara police to evacuate people and about eight to 10 homes in the area as a precaution. everyone was allowed back in their homes by 3:00 this morning, after pg&e shut off

the gas. pg&e had to dig a hole in the neighbor's driveway to restore power to the home here. they are still working on patching things up. they also had to check to make sure the main gas line here wasn't leaking. again, pg&e will be out here for a few more hours finishing up the work. the two homes here are expected to have power a little later this afternoon. live in santa clara, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. well, a bay area principal who resigned last year is under investigation amid allegations of sexual harrasment and inappropriate behavior. phil winston stepped down from palo alto high school in june, citing several factors, including health concerns. but the district sent a letter home to parents yesterday saying he's been the subject of a lengthy investigation into charges of inappropriate behavior, including touching a student's arm and another kid's ear. >> now all these things are happening and i would have appreciated knowing earlier. >> in a statement, winston disputes the claims, saying they lack context and are

highly misleading. he adds that at the time, he was, quote, under extreme pressure, stress, and had personal challenges. since august, he's been reassigned to a middle school, where he teaches in a special ed class, along with two other adults. oakland school officials are responding to parents' concerns about sexual assaults on elementary school campuses. this comes just days after we reported three incidents at three different schools between january and march. oakland police say the same man may be responsible. parents tell us they are frustrated that it took weeks to find out what was happening. district officials have since sent a letter to parents, saying they are increasing security. the letter also asks for help, saying, quote, we are asking every school community, especially parents and school staff, to work together to keep their schools extra safe. nearly three weeks after an elderly pedestrian was killed in a hit and run by an suv, san francisco police have arrested the driver. the accident happened back on march 20th at visitation avenue

and bayshore boulevard. police say 31-year-old nidra stubbs hit an 80-year-old woman and kept going. they say stubbs made a u-turn. police were able to identify stubbs as the driver using nearby surveillance footage. stubbs was taken into custody on thursday. happening today, more than 325 people are taking part right now in disaster response drill in san francisco. the san francisco fire department is being joined by members from the neighborhood emergency response team at everett middle school on church street. volunteers are practicing search and rescue techniques, treating injured victims, and they are setting up command centers. the event kicked off about 8:30 this morning. it's under way right now and is going to continue until 3:00 p.m. a final decision will soon be made on the oakland police department's ongoing radio problems. the radios have a history of crashing on officers, including a failure during a visit from president obama. city leaders say there were major improvements made to the system over the last year, but

. cal trans blames bad timing and not mismanagement for the massive traffic jam caused by an emergency pothole repair on the western span of the bay bridge. some people returning to the east bay after a giants game waited hours to get onto the bridge. although a pot holy pothole was on the upper deck, crews shut down lanes on both decks. cal trans tells the chronicle that safety is its first priority and that it was unfortunate timing that so many people were inconvenienced. well, president obama is scheduled to come back to the bay area next month and he's planning on holding two fund raisers in the silicon valley. on may 8, one will be reportedly held at the palo alto home of yahoo! ceo and a silicon valley round table is also on the agenda. money raised at both events will go to the democratic national committee. the highest ticket price is said to be about $32,000. and former secretary of state hillary clinton is meeting more opposition during

her speaking tour around the country. a group of demonstrators picketed outside an event yesterday in san diego. the group included the mother of one of the americans killed in a terrorist attack on the u.s. diplomatic compound in benghazi, libya in 2012. the mother holds clinton responsible. >> they abandoned my son and that's exactly what it was, an abandonment. they abandoned the guys on the rooftop also. >> that protest follows thursday's incident you see there in las vegas in which a woman slipped by social security and then hurled a shoe at clinton. clinton has yet to announce whether or not she will run for president in 2016, but one group is already preparing for her campaign. ready for hillary says it has raised $1.7 million in the past three months and the group has 25 employees and 15 interns. it says if she decides to run, they want her as ready as possible on day one of that campaign. amazon is taking on a new approach for workers who are
