of you. all you've got to do. >> so what's that number? he is a et the first car in line with four fresh tires, green flag. five to go. >> got a nice run headed down into turn one. >> advantage, johnson. >> boy, if that 48 gets out there very far, it could be bad news for all of these guys. >> earnhardt second. kenseth, gordon and harvick on the bottom. >> but jeff gordon is holding him up. he needs to be able to make the pass here if he's going to get going here. >> jimmie johnson is loving the fact that his teammate, jeff gordon in the 24, continues to battle kevin harvick. >> cleared him there. pretty sure there's going to be another caution. boy, these guys are all over each other. >> there's a lot of bump and run
7:31 pm
from kurt busch back. >> big time. >> leads junior by half a second. >> the 11 car, i thought he was going to wreck, but he didn't. >> three to go. >> in that time jimmie johnson's lap time was .2 quicker -- >> yellow! debris in turn three. >> there just had r about had to be i mike, he spun all the way down to the inside or main even later. ricky stenhouse is the free pass car and that will give kevin harvick another shot and this time he will restart third. >> well, that means he's going to restart on the inside. i think that's going to force johnson's hand to choose the inside, isn't it, darrell?
7:32 pm
>> i think the inside is the way to go. matt? >> mike, besides line chase, the car is way too tight on the short run. >> you'd be fined now. you can't worry about how tight you are, how loose you are. you have to go and remember what you go. >> dale earnhardt jr., you're looking at him right here. he's sitting in second spot. we've been talking about harvick, talked about johnson, how much he wants to a purpose. >> i'm not counting anybody else. anybody that's up here in the first four or five. certainly the 48 and 988, the 4 and the 20 -- you can't count any of them out.
7:33 pm
>> there's still a big move to come. lets a look at the 5-hour energy big move. jimmie johnson on the right, kevin harvick on the left. rodney childress and company going for four as chad knaus chooses two tires for jimmie johnson. however this turns out, this is the big move of the race. >> you look at greg biffle, he's running sixth. bowyer running 7th. 18th is eighth. kyle larson, 10th. >> not only did the 48 team decide to do the two-tire stop, but they gave jimmie something he hadn't seeming like a sad pulse. does this make you nervous?
7:34 pm
>> good. i'm up here. my heart gets pounded. >> this will be the fourth green, white, checkered. that will have to scoot and get out of the way. >> whew. >> as we get ready to go. one to go is the signal this time by. and we will complete the advertised difference as they cross the line. this will be our first attempt at green, white, checker. >> like he's chosen the outside. >> let's just think about this. what if they workt together. what if dale jr. knew it was a coincidence. >> i don't think so. i don't think jimmie johnson
7:35 pm
gives a hoot about eric but -- >> yeah. rim hundred druk looks like it does. jimmie johnson does not. in this wind you're darn near in format. the only car up there that has a win is the 4 car. well, the 88, he has a win from daytona. but the 48, 20, 24, those are guys that we've been saying are going to win. >> darrell, i think you and i are both surprised that jimmie johnson chose that outside based on what we've seen the entire race. >> that's what my my exception. >> sellout crowd at darlington raceway. can we get from here? three wide going into turn one. >> let's find out. jimmie johnson, dale earnhardt jr., kevin harvick, matt kenseth, jeff gordon.
7:36 pm
and harvick -- >> all but pushing earnhardt towards turn one. >> jimmie johnson did not git a good restart on that top side. >> neither did jeff gordon. he's backed up into the second pack. it's a four horse race out in turn two. >> spin down the back straightaway. it is kurt busch. >> yellow. >> now yellow. >> or we get to the right flag. >> now what do you think will happen? >> now it's the 88 and the 4 on the front row. >> well, the first thing i would hope to think is dale earnhardt jr. will choose the inside. if he's not, i'm going to throw something down there. >> now that the 4 car is where he is, i don't think it will make a whole lot of difference. >> it is, it is. >> kurt busch goes from green to walking home. >> all on a green, white, checker. >> he was 11th. >> here's the restart. watch this.
7:37 pm
i mean, he is pushing dale jr. down into turn one. he's wobbling all over the place. he's saying, bring it on, big boy. >> jeff gordon's car got to the turn and it would not turn. >> he was able to clear the 48, get in line and go. >> and kurt busch. whoa, whoa. back into the clutches of clint bowyer. >> yeah, bowyer got in the back of him and turned him around. >> busch lost his momentum and bowyer and everybody else still had theirs. >> yeah, that's unfortunate. curt did a nice job. >> wow. >> top 11 there. that's a hard hit on that inside wall. thank goodness for safer barriers there. a car destroyed. well, we do have richmond in two weeks.
7:38 pm
>> what makes you say things like that, larry? >> i've been hanging out with you 14 years. >> same thing that makes him say, we're going to have more cautions before this is over. >> yeah. he just -- i mean -- kurt had lost his forward momentum. >> when you come off the corner side by side, curt is trying to stay off the 42 who was closing on the outside. maybe he had to lift a little. who knows. >> in the middle, clear high. clear high. all clear. looking high, outside, outside, go. >> i mean, you can see the 42 come around the outside of kurt. he knew he was there. not sure if he lifted or not. he's the only one who knows. we do know one thing, the 15
7:39 pm
spun him out. >> any strategy on a green, white, checker? we listened in on the 88 nkts okay. let's have a conversation. we talking about daytona and i agree. do you want to be on the bottom or the top. what do you think? >> i'm going to start on the bottom. i don't know why jimmie started up there. >> we don't either. >> we were wondering the same thing. we thought the same thing when he did that. we weren't sure what he was thinking. >> when jimmie started up there, he had the same problem when jeff started up there. >> same with dale jr. >> earnhardt will start on the incompetent be side, johnson will be behind him. kevin harvick with matt kenseth behind him. >> based on the way the 4 car took off, remember, he was pushing dale jr. he gets that kind of restart here. he'll drive by him.
7:40 pm
>> dale earnhardt jr. and kevin harvick, they know if they get their second win, they absolutely punch their ticket for the win. >> those guys behind them know that we need a win. the two guys right behind them are the two winningest drivers of last year. >> they can taste it and they can't get it. >> can dale earnhardt jr. win at a track where his dad had such success? >> or the 4. >> will kevin harvick be the first pole winner since the turn of the century. >> they are all there for dale jr. green flag, second try. here we go. >> boy, that wasn't a great start by harvick that time. he did spin the tires a little bit. that allowed dale jr. to get out there. >> junior and harvick break free of traffic. johnson, a distant third. fourth is a dog fight. biffle and kenseth.
7:41 pm
white flag this time. >> here he comes. >> harvick on the outside. junior has a lift. had to get by. the next flag ends the race. >> those four tires, they were magic. >> and harvick has run the bottom three and four the entire race. made the pass up against the wall. >> junior just couldn't do anything with him. he was to strong with those four tires against his two. >> final time. kevin harvick from the pole to victory lane. kevin harvick. >> southern 500, baby! >> oh, yeah. >> good job, bud. >> the bojangles' southern 500 goes to bakersfield, california, kevin harvick. all night long we knew where he would come from. >> i got a feeling this bud's for you, boys. >> this has to mean so much for kevin harvick and that team. since that win, four finishes
7:42 pm
outside the top 35. >> kurt busch checked and released at the infield care center after getting turned around by clint bowyer. hard way to end his night. >> great job. that whole team. the pit stops were great. the calls were great. rodney childress, what a great run. what a great car for that kid. >> tony stewart's going to have to get used to congratulating drivers that win races, third time. >> and how about stewart who rebounded for a top ten. >> ninth place finish. >> how about my rookies. how about my little rookies, top ten. >> top ten for kyle larson and 11th for austin dillon. >> both the rookies have a great night. >> mr. h, rick hendrick, once again he gets outrun by some of his own equipment. >> a hendrick engine wins the race. rick hendrick's cars finish
7:43 pm
second, third and seventh. joe gibbs racing fourth place, the highest toyota. roush fenway, the highest ford, greg biffle in fifth. >> good job for biffle. i'm proud of old biff. he drove the wheels off that thing tonight. >> his good luck charm is his young son keelan who hops in the seat and cranks on the race every wheel before his dad gets in the car. >> look at those cars, they look like they've been run over by bowman gray. >> kevin harvick gets to celebrate. his wife delana waiting for that car to come by with one lap to go. yes! kevin harvick wins darlington.

7:49 pm
just didn't work out. >> would you do it over? would you still take the two tires and would you choose the outside? >> if it was two, mine worked, i got away from everybody, if it stayed green, we were in great shape. >> thanks, jimmie. >> a career best night at darlington for dale earnhardt jr. his best finish here at the lady in black. a second. you took the bottom, he had fresher tires. did you still think that might give you the shot? >> no, he had the best car and the best tires. looking in the mirror i couldn't tell where anybody was. t.j. said he was coming. i maybe should have run the top and made him work the bottom to get around us. we had a great car. best finish i've had here. i don't really run that great here so the guys had prepared a really good car for us to run that well. got to give the national guard team credit. >> dale earnhardt jr. passed by kevin harvick who in his career

first win of the year. >> jeff gordon, you're still leading the points. tell us about your night. >> yeah, we had a really strong race car. everything was going really, really well. kevin with that number one pit stall, and he was fast, too. i thought we were a little bit better than him on certain runs. there towards the end, i don't know, just kind of started fading. i got in the wall a little bit and got the right side flattened up a bit and from there our night went downhill. we got behind and were the last car on two tires. got ate up. i thought it was going to be worst than seventh. i feel like a missed opportunity but another great race car and i'm happy about that. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> you heard him reference the points lead but no victories so far and that's trouble as you look at the standings after eight races where the win is what matters. >> like he said at the beginning
7:55 pm
of the show, not the best year to be leading the points. he needs that victory. you have to win to get in. jeff gordon is having a solid year. he's been fast enough to win but hasn't gotten to victory lane. >> look at the name of the drivers, kenseth, jimmie johnson, tony stewart. their time is coming. we'll have more from the pole sitter who is the victor tonight in darlington. can call it whatever they want. come on. framily is not a word. is the f from family or is it from friends? or did they just add an r? forget about that. it's not a word! you're my frather, i'm your fron, this is our framily. you can't just mush words together like that. uh gu gu. 7:58 pm
we're going to be ready at short track racing. that would be fun. >> it would be nice if we had back-to-back racing, that would be fun. >> seems like there are not in our own area. richmond will certainly be a great race. >> matt kenseth last year's winner is standing by with matt yocum. >> matt kenseth qualified in the 25th position, but the final green, white, checkered restart, walk me through your position in the second row. >> yeah, it seemed like the inside row could get going better. kevin was in front of me in the top. i knew that was a good thing. he accelerated with a new left rear. i was out there spinning the tires until i got to the corner. greg snuck by me, i was able to get back to him. for our home depot husky tools, we got up there and could run solidly. good adjustments, great stops. overall good night. >> 25th to 4th for kenseth.
