live pictures are of the breaking news happening in the south bay. crews continuing to battal massive five alarm fire at a building in san jose. this is just shy of downtown. >> it started a little over an hour ago. it is burning at montgomery street and park avenue. what used to be the old kn tv television studios. have we wanted to show you live pictures of what is happening at the school. the smoke now white. it appears the crews are getting the upper hand on the massive five alarm fire. >> >> debra just arrived at the scene. she will have a live update for us later in the newscast. >> >> we turn into the investigation into another fire, a large fire in berkeley that one destroyed a number of buildings and caused millions of dollars in damage. we have live team coverage from

the scene. katie spoke to artists who is work was destroyed in the fire. >> >> reporter: if you take a look behind me, you can see this still a fairly active fire scene. berkeley fire crews still on the scene. they will be here overnight making sure there are no flareups. there is so much ash and wood debris in the building. the big warehouse that burned down. there is no real way of completely extinguishing the flames. they have to wait for the fire to die out on their own. crews say they don't want to be go going in and out of the building unless absolutely necessary. because what is left of the roof, it could collapse at at any time. crews say the fire brought down electrical wires onto a truck. crews had to wait until pg & e could shut down power in the area. crews managed to contain the fire at 1:00 this morning. have been keeping an eye on it

dude! tillamook sharp cheddar, tastes better because it's made better. back to the breaking news in the south bay. >> debra is live in san jose where crews continue to work to put our the massive 5 alarm fire. deb, can you describe the scene for us? >> reporter: we are seeing less flame, but still alot of heavy smoke coming off this property. take a look. there are engine and ladder trucks on all four sides of this building. this fire started two hours ago, sending alot of heavy smoke up earlier, visible from the south bay freeways, like sending a cloud over downtown san jose. this is an old television building. kn tv channel 11 which moved out of the structure years ago.

recently, it has been a persistent problem with homeless people, dozens of them breaking in and camping in the building. the structure is hollow. making it difficult to fight. san jose fire has had to pull away because of parts of the building collapsing. here is the fire captain, reggie williams a couple of minutes ago. >> when we arrived on the scene a couple of people were in the building and had escaped. we couldn't we don't know if there were more inside. we actually have to withdraw from the building and go into a defensive mode. during the initial minutes of the fire, we had several collapses of the building, the roof collapsed. the walls collapsed and we have had huge firefight on our hands. >> >> reporter: about eight people were seen escaping the

building. transients who were squatting in the building. the fire department does not know if there were more inside and if more were trapped. they will not know until this becomes under control and cools down and becomes structurally safe for them to go inside and do a complete search. right now, captain williams is not making an estimate on that timetable becauses you can see this is still a firefight here in san jose. >> >> developing news out of kansas where three people were killed and a 14-year-old boy critically injured when police say an elderly gunman opened fire at a jewish community center and outside of a retirement home. police in overland park say they arrested the suspected shooter, in his 70s. he was smiling aces he was taken into custody and thoughted hitler. it was really scary.

an update on breaking news, 5 alarm fire in san jose. you can see the smoke has really gone down, but this is how it looked at its peak. this is the old kn tv, tv station. eight people, presumably homeless people were seen escaping the building. firefighters would like to talk to them or anyone in the area when the fire started. firefighters are not sure if anyone else was inside of the building. it's too dangerous for them to go in and take a look. they are staying on the scene and will be there much of the rest of the evening. >> >> as boston prepares for its first marathon since last
