we're live in fremont where an investigator is trying to find out what caused a house to catch on fire this morning. we'll tell you what they are focusing on and what people in the neighborhood heard as that

fire was starting. new signs of trouble for the bay bridge. the discovery that engineering experts are saying could lead to serious structural damage if it's not quickly fixed. plus, another off-the- -field problem for a 49ers player. what aldon smith is accused of doing at an airport and how fans are reacting. tonight is the full moon and also a total lunar eclipse. both come together about 12:42,:12:45. get outside, away from the coast. until about 1:00 in the morning. if the fog is near the coast, you might want to get to higher ground or visit someone inland. you need clear skies. we don't have to worry about high clouds. they will be out of picture. so slightly warmer inland. i think it's a push by the coast. 40s, 50s. by noon, 60s 70s later. the low clouds, it looks like they are here to stay. a little chill in the morning air. no doubt about it. once the fog heads back to the coast, it will be a sunny and nice day. morning fog, a lot of sunshine. near 80 inland. you have to get out far. breezy for some. not too bad. upper 70s, low 80s. 50s, 60s, coast and bay. here's sal. we're looking at a commute

that's getting busier by the moment. we're up almost to the peak of the morning commute. i want to show you the traffic here on highway 24. it doesn't look bad. a lot of times we see slow traffic through la fayette. drive time is eight minutes from la fayette to oakland, including crossing the caldecott tunnel. we have a look at the commute at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's backed up for 20, 25 minutes getting into san francisco. we've been looking at the pill. had a couple of incidents pop up on 101. but still, 101 is not bad from san mateo as you head south. as we push into 280, i would say 280 is a nice drive. you heard steve mention there is a little bit of fog out there. back to the desk. a family of five is alive this morning after being woken up by an explosion in their garage. that's when they noticed smoke and flames at their home on wood bridge place just before 4:30.

janine de la vega has been there since 5:00 talking to neighbors and the firefighters about how this happened. >> reporter: a lot of the fire crews have left. but the fire veaf is here right now -- investigator is rear height near down the street on woodbridge place where you see the truck. the firefighter is focusing on the garage area, that's where firefighters believe the fire started. the families across the street, neighbors are consoling them. they are devastated. here's a and a half -- a photograph taken by the fremont police department. the scene looked like this at 4:30 a.m. flames engulfed this home. five people were living. fire crews rushed in, doused it with water. it took them about 40 minutes to knock it down but the flames did burn the garage. two cars parked in the driveway and then it traveled into the attic. the family escaped with one of their dogs. but the other two chihuahuas died in the fire.

>> there is a lot of damage. but a lot of smoke damage to the belongings inside and structural damage to the home. and then the fact that the fire is displaced. more importantly, they lost their family pet. >> reporter: the family says they heard an explosion coming from the garage. one of the family members went to investigate and that's when they saw the flames. neighbors also report hearing a loud boom. so investigator right now is looking through all of the charred debris trying to determine what caused the fire. the fire also did damage the home next door an exterior wall. but that home was saved. now, these people that were evacuated we're told it was an elderly woman, a grandmother, her daughter and the two granddaughters as well as the family friend that was staying in that home. they've been very emotional this morning. and haven't wanted to speak on camera.

but again, neighbors are helping them get through this. reporting live from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, janine. new this morning, a man was hit and killed by a car near redwood city while running across the street. it happened around 3:00 a.m. on middlefield road near pacific avenue. the chp thinks the 62-year-old man hit may have been drinking in the area and ran out across the street. that's when the car hit him. the driver said there was no file to stop -- no time too stop. >> it could be more of a shock to realize you just hit someone. it's hard to comprehend unless you have been through it. >> the driver of the car is cooperating with the investigation. if you have any information on this, you are asked to call the chp. 7:06. 49er fans reacting this morning to the news that the team's star line backer was arrested over the weekend. aldon smith was arrested at l.a.x. for allegedly making a false report of a bomb threat.

brian flores has been on the story dealing with the latest legal trouble for the 49ers' star. >> good morning. this is another distraction. the team just does not need this during the offseason. aldon smith out on bail this morning after his latest run-in with the law. want to go to new video of tmz leaving an l.a.p.d. police station after leaving after posting $25,000 in bail. he did not say anything to the camera and left in the car. police arrested him at los angeles international airport yesterday and booked him for making a false police report of a bomb. police say he became belligerent at the security when he was randomly selected for a screening. they took him into custody after he allegedly said something about a bomb. smith faces charges that could send him to jail for a year if convicted. it's still unclear how this

will affect the team. he does have a fifth-year option. but the team said we're disappointed to learn of the incident today involving aldon smith as this is a pending legal matter, we'll have no further comment. fans are disappointed. >> unfortunately, no matter what his talent level is, it's a disruption to the team. as much as i want the 49ers and i want them to stay on top in the nfc, if this continues -- we can't have players going to court. >> smith had appeared in court last friday in connection with two earlier arrests in san jose. last september police arrested him for suspicion of driving under the influence. he's also facing felony counts of possessing illegal firearms that deputies discovered at his home in san jose. police arrested him in january of 2012 for suspicion of drunk driving. that charge was later reduced

to reckless driving. back to you. >> thank you. at least eight other 49ers have been the subject of police investigation since 2012. that includes an incident in miami including quarterback colin kaepernick and clinton patton that made big news last week. police are calling the incident involving a woman suspicious. but no arrests or charges are pending. on friday, chris culliver was in santa clara county superior court. he entered a not guilty plea to misdemeanor hit and run and felony possession of brass knuckles. charges stemming from a march 28th incident in san jose. autopsy results could be available as soon as today for a woman who disappeared during a hike on mount tamalpais u crews found the body of the 33- year-old of menlo park in a steep ravine on saturday. they were tipped off by a hiker to remembered seeing someone matching her description in the

area several days ago. she disappeared on march 30th. investigators say her body showed no obvious signs of trauma. there's a no ner problems on the -- another problem omthe but bay bridge bridge. rust. the sacramento bee reports rust has been found on steel strands and rods that connect to the lone suspension cable that wraps around the bridge. the chamber is supposed to keep out water around the salty marine air. a bay bridge spokesperson said there's no concern about corrosion. the designer reportedly warned caltrans that some welds could track. sections of the deak made in china did not fit together perfectly once delivered. caltrans allowed crews to meet lower safety standards to weld the sections together. well, design engineers were not worried about a cat strofnl failure. they were concerned about -- catastrophic failure. they were concerned about cracking. they say the risk is cracking

is remote. final preparations being made now to mark the first anniversary of the boston marathon bombings. on april 15th of last year, two bombs exploded at the finish line killing three people and injuring more than two others. joe biden, massachusetts governor devaul patrick and the current and former mayors of boston will attend a special tribute. that will be followed by a flag raising ceremony and a moment of silence at the finish line. this year, the boston marathon will be run on monday april 21st. there will be much more security in place. that includes police officers at 40 to 50 checkpoints all along the final two miles of the route. in total, about 3500 police officers will be at the boston marathon double the usual amount. bomb sniffing dogs, surveillance cameras and barriers are also being put into place. people here in the bay area are also marking the anniversary.

yesterday, people in mill valley held a run to honern the victims and -- honern the victims and sur -- hopper the victims and the -- honor the victims and survivors. 50 people from the bay area will be heading to boston to run the marathon. one woman said she was stopped a half-mile from the finish line when the bombs went off and she's going back this year to finish what she started. >> i can still exactly see where i was before right about to turn the corner onto boylston. i know when i get to that point, it will probably be joyous and emotional at the same time. >> marin county is not the only bay area community represented in boston. hundreds of bay area runners will be making the trip. the marathon is a week from today, next monday, the 21st of april. a very critical search is underway after a raging fire happened at an abandoned building in the south bay. what firefighters will be searching for in the debris this morning.

7:15. new this morning, police in nigeria say an explosion went off at a busy commuter bus station this morning as hundreds of people were on their way to work. it happened in the capital. more than 70 people were killed. more than 120 others injured.

the blast ripped a four-foot deep hole in the ground. it also destroyed more than 30 buses. techers are -- teachers are returning to the pennsylvania high school where a 16-year-old stabbed fellow students and a security guard last wednesday. the high school has been closed since then. students and families will be allowed to visit the school tomorrow. but no classes until this wednesday. the motive for the attack is still not clear. you this m morning, the judge in the murder trial of oscar pistorius ended early.

he's accused of intentionally killing his girlfriend during a valentine's day fight at his south african home last year. the prosecutor demanded to know exactly what pistorius said as he moved towards the bathroom. >> mr. pistorius, listen to my question, i know what you want to say. every time you do that it affects your credibility. please. did you whisper. >> i didn't whisper. >> if somebody would say that you whispered, that person would be lying, am i right? >> that's right. >> you know who that person is? >> no. >> it's you. >> now, pistorius said he thought there was an intruder in the house and that the fatal shooting was a tragic accident. >> 7:17. a southwest airlines jet made an emergency landing in nebraska. passengers say a man tried to

open one of the doors on the plane in mid-flight. that plane was headed from chicago to sacramento. a tv producer based in sacramento was on the plane, took this video you are looking at of the man being taken off the plane in omaha, nebraska. >> i think when we get into those situations, you are either gonna coward, freeze or do something instinctually and your adrenaline will rush and you will go for it. >> after the man was removed from the plane, the plane continued to sacramento. rope enrollment ends tomorrow for covered california. that is if you started the application on or before march 31st. the next open enrollment period begins this fall. all right.

7:18. hey, sal, have you fixed everything in our commute yet? >> i'm trying to do? >> i know you are. >> mondays rough. we don't have a lot of crashes out there but we have a lot of slow traffic. you can see the traffic on the bay bridge approach. still pretty full. it's backed you up for about a 25-minute drive time into san francisco which is not all that bad. if you are in the carpool lanes, it would be a lot less for you. if you are driving to the san mateo bridge. this commute doesn't look too bad here if you are driving -- unless you start counting the drive time from the toll plaza to foster city, it's about 12 minutes but there's waiting to be done before that, as you drive to the toll plaza from hayward. we also look at the dumbarton bridge. today that bridge looks pretty good. as you drive from newark to east palo alto. i want to mention that peninsula traffic looking good southbound, 101 between san mateo and redwood city taking about ten minutes which is better than normal.

tomorrow is tax day. tax preparers are busy with last-minute filers trying to beat the deadline. now, most people these days are choosing to file electronically. in fact, a record 85% of all of the tax returns are expected to be filed electronically this year which means no midnight runout to the post office. >> we e-mail it to you. you get all of your forms. you can search it any time you want instead of fumbling around. it's all there for you. there's another benefit to electronic filling. the refunds come back to you within weeks, not months. because so many people are filing electronically, the number of post offices staying open late on april 15th, dramatically reduce. for example, no post offices in sonoma county will stay open late tomorrow. here are some of the few bay area post offices that will stay open late tomorrow. the oakland main post office on 7th street. it will stay open until 8:30

building when it went up in flames. good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. it's monday, april 14th. >> i'm dave clark. >> let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, everybody will be looking up at the sky. do you think they will get up? >> if you want to, you better bet up or stay up. i would say 11:30 tonight until 1:00 a.m., full moon and also total lunar eclipse. get away from the coast. there is a lot of fog out there. even though it will burn back, it will cause problems. pollen count continuing to be high. trees way up there. medium high. oak, mulberry, grass is high. it's showing signs. slightly warmer. partly cloudies. mostly sunny. mostly sunny and then i think sunny. the fog will be back fast tonight. the total eclipse, full moon, 12:42. total eclipse, 12:45. get outside at 11:30. get away from the coast. if you have the fog, you are in trouble. get up on higher ground, sky

line or other areas inland you will be just fine because there's not gonna be any higher clouds. there will be low clouds. 40s and 50s. antioch dipping into 49. santa rosa, 48. half moon bay at 54 degrees. a couple of high clouds as well as the lower clouds but you can see the low clouds really up and down the coast. kind of peoples back in southern california -- peels back in southern california. a couple of upper 70s low 80s. a lot of 60s and 70s around the bay. here's sal. >> we do have a couple of problems out there. we'll take a look at the approaches to some of the standard commutes. the bay bridge, for example, 25- minute delay. as we get closer to easter, some people do have some -- some schools have time off. some people schedule spring break around the same time. we've noticed lighter than usual commutes. northbound 880 and southbound 880 traffic looks good in the oakland area. the traffic from the hegenberger exist up to -- exit

up to downtown oakland, taking five minutes or so. not a bad drive time. we have an injury accident northbound 101 at tully road, where a piece of construction equipment went off the side of the road. medics are on the scene. northbound 101 is slow. people are using 85. it's slow from 87 into the valley. northbound 280 is looking good. the drive times, 85 from 87 up to saratoga about 15 minutes. maybe less. but it's gonna take you the normal amount of time to drive through. 7:33. back to the desk. it's a fire, a big one that sent flames shooting out of a building in san jose but now there are concerns about who may have been in that building. take a look at this video. you can get an idea of how intense the flames were. the roof and the walls caved in making it very hard for firefighters to fight it. now, it all started in an area of park avenue and montgomery streets. that's where we find alex savidge with more on who the

firefighters think may have been in that building when the flames started. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning to you. there were a number of homeless people who lived in this building. that's who firefighters are worried about this morning. but because this structure behind us is still in danger of collapsing. fire crews have not been able to search through the rubble to look for any potential victims just yet. the main goal was to keep tabs on many of the hot spots out here and make sure those hot spots didn't flare back up. the fire started yesterday afternoon about 3:00. at this building that's at the intersection of park and montgomery near downtown san jose. this building used to be a television studio for kntv but it can been vacant since 2004. since that time, it had been used by a group of homeless people. we're told there were 25, 30 people who lived inside there. one woman we talked to said some people had been living at the building for many years

using camping stoves and propane tanks to cook. she doesn't think that's what started the fire. we're told parts of the building had been converted into apartment units. >> one of the girls who lives upstairs came running down screaming fire, fire and at first we thought she was crying wolf and we saw the smoke an everybody panicked. we all just tried to make sure everybody was out and we tried to get all of the dogs out. >> now, that woman told us she believes everyone did make it out safely yesterday. but firefighters say they just can't be sure because when they arrived here at the scene, the roof and the walls of this building had where collapsed. so it was just too dangerous for crews to go inside and search for victims at that time. they will again have to do that at some point in the near future. two firefighters suffered minor injuries. they are expected to recover. investigators working to pinpoint exactly what started this fire yesterday. there are some reports that it

was started intentionally but all of that is still being sorted out. we're live this morning in san jose, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. later today in berkeley, federal investigators will be looking for the cause of saturday's massive fire. it destroyed several businesses. the flames tore through this warehouse at second street. there's not much left besides charred wood and ashes. the owners of the wooden duck furniture store says a four- foot thick brick wall saved most of their business and they are hoping to reopen by the middle of the week. >> there's nothing to indicate that it's suspicious in nature now but nothing that's rolled out until we can -- ruled out until we can rule it out. >> damage is estimated in the millions of dollars. but the exact figure that won't be known until later in the investigation. 7:36. santa clara police shot and killed a woman after she charged at them with a baseball bat. it happened yesterday evening on lickmill boulevard near fair

way glen park. police say the woman called 911 and made threats to harm herself and others. when officers approached the woman they say she charged at them with a baseball bat. that's when they opened fire saying they feared for their safety. the woman died at the hospital. the incident is still under investigation. the parents of a man shot and killed by san francisco police plan to file a claim against the city today. 28-year-old alejandra nieto was killed march 21st at bernal heights park. police were responding to a 911 call about a man with a gun. they say when they asked him to show his hands, he brought out what looked to them like a gun. it was a taser. san francisco's jewish community center is tightening security after the deadly shootings of three people at two jewish centers in kansas. also we're learning new information about the suspected gunman in yesterday's shootings. investigators say 73-year-old

frazier glenn cross is a notorious white supremacist and a former ku klux klan leader. witnesses say they heard him yell heil hitler as he was being taken into custody. >> it was really scary. people are calling their loved ones. >> i kind of just couldn't help but think about sandy hook, just looking around it. these very young children and i was really scared. >> cross is accused in the deadly shooting of a young woman at a jewish retirement community outside of kansas city and he's charged with killing a grand and his 14-year- old grandson in the parking lot behind the jewish community center a couple of blocks away. last night dozens of people gathered in overland park kansas, mourning the deaths of those killed. one woman stunned the crowd when she went up to speak.

>> i'm the daughter of the gentleman who was killed. [inaudible] 7:39. federal investigators are trying to determine if some lives could have been saved in last week's bus crash near chico if the high school students on the bus had been wearing seat belts. on thursday, a fed-ex truck crossed a median and hit a charter bus carrying students from southern california. ten people died including five students. dozens of students managed to escape through windows before both vehicles exploded into flames. ntsb investigators say others were thrown from the bus. >> clearly one of the issues we'll be looking at is whether or not seat belts would have made a difference in these folks being ejected from the motor coach. >> investigators say the bus in

the crash did have seat belts but most people were not wearing them. they say without someone similar to a flight attendant, it's nearly impossible to regulate whether passengers are belted in. the ntsb is looking into fire safety. this morning a mother from utah is accused of killing six of her babies. police arrested 39-year-old megan huntsman after finding the bodies at a home in pleasant grover where she used to with her now estranged husband. members of his family were cleaning out the garage when someone found the first infant. stunned neighbors say they liked her and trusted her. >> she was always a good baby- sitter. she baby sat my grandchildren when they were little. >> we had no idea, absolutely no idea what it could have been. >> officers found the bodies of seven infants but believe one was stillborn so they are charging luntsman with -- huntsman with six counts of

murder. police say she gave birth to the babies over a ten-year period. her husband spent eight of those years in prison. investigators are examining dna to determine paternity. her husband is not considered a suspect. a fremont family escapes an early-morning house fire just in the nick of time. what sent them running into the streets just as their home went up in flames. ugly clashes between college students and police in not one but two states. what happened hours before that led to the chaos. >> we're still looking at traffic that's busy in some areas the lighter than usual in others. this is 280. sunshine for some. there's a lot of fog around. temperatures, though, we will see how they are impacted today and also viewing for the full moon and lunar eclipse tonight.

an out-of-control fire in chile is forcing thousands from their home. at least 12 people have died. more than 2,000 homes have been destroyed. the fire started saturday in the heavily populated hills above the city. strong winds quickly spread the flames. chilean military has sent sailors to the evacuated areas to prevent looting. a jack in the box employee in pleasanton was stabbed several times and police are saying it's a cause of attempted murder. it happened yesterday near valley avenue. the suspect jazmine vasquez was

seen on surveillance video stabbing one of the employees multiple times in the back and neck. officials say it's not clear what hetter is off. footage showed her walking away from the scene. police caught up with her a short time later in dublin and booked her on attempted murder charges. a san jose police officer accused of raping a woman while on duty is due in court this afternoon. 38-year-old jeffrey graves is a six-year police department veteran and is accused of raping a woman he was sent to protect during a domestic dispute last month. investigators say the rape occurred at a hotel where the woman once worked as a maid. a judge has ordered graves to turn in his gun and not contact the woman in this case. new developments in the crisis in ukraine. this morning, ukraine's acting president called for united nations's peace keeping troops to be sent to the eastern part of that country.

huge backup but there is a backup if you are driving on 101 after all of this, it looks good all the way to sunnyvale. i think a lot of people are held up in slow traffic. 8:03. back to the desk. thank you, sal. an east bay family is devastated this morning after losing their home and two pets in a fire. it started just before 4:30 on woodbridge place. janine de la vega is there in fremont with more on what's happening now and what people in the neighborhood heard as the fire broke out. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. a woman who lives here with her elderly mother and two daughters told me that she heard a loud boom. she smelled smoke and then she went to investigate and she saw flames coming out of her garage. here you can see what's left. a lot of charred debris and two cars that were burned. that's where fire investigators are focusing on, is this garage area, because it appears to have started there. here is a picture that the

fremont fire department started. you can see flames completely engulfed this home on woodbridge place near fremont boulevard. four adults and one child escaped safely with one of their dogs, fish and a pet turtle. they told me they did not hear smoke alarms go off in their house. the family next door ran outside because the flames jumped to the side of their home as well. >> every amount of fire, there were five people displaced from the home. two dogs perished in the fire. we were able to knock down the garage and it extended into the main part of the house and the attic and crews did a good attack and we were able to put the fire out. >> the family lost two chihuahuas that died in the fire. the belongings were damaged in the fire. the house is unlivable. the home next door had minor damage to one of the exterior walls. the fire investigator is going through all of the rubble looking to see what may have caused the fire to ignite. he's also interviewing several family members that were inside

for some of the san francisco 49ers. linebacker aldon smith was arrested in los angeles over the weekend for allegedly making a false report of having a bomb. ktvu's brian flores here in the studio with how this could affect the team. >> there's no question of aldon smith's talent on the field. he's considered one of the pass rushers the team has ever had. but it's off the field that could prove to be a big distraction for the team. he's out on bail this morning after his latest run-in with the law. this is video of him leaving an l.a.p.d. station after posting his $25,000 bail. he didn't say anything on camera. this is video of police arresting him around 2:00 in the afternoon. they tooked him for making a false report of a bomb threat. police say he became belligerent at the security gate when selected for a secondary screening. authorities say they then took him into custody after he said something about having a bomb

to the screener. in the video he's heard saying i didn't do anything wrong and they were putting cuffs on him. he's also herd saying why are you twisting my arm? we have reached out to the team and they are sticking to a statement "we are disappointed to learn of the incident involving aldon smith as this is a pending legal matter, we'll have no further comment." fans think this latest issue is not good for the team. >> i like aldon smith. i think he's extremely talented. i hope he's able to work through these things and stay with the team. but if these things are gonna continue, i think they should not consider renewing had i contract -- his contract. >> last september police arrested him for suspicion of

driving under the influence. smith faces felony counts of possessing illegal assault rifles which deputies discovered after a june 2012 party at his home. smith missed five weeks to enter a rehab facility for substance abuse. as for that latest incident, he could face a year in prison ifth canned. i'm brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. at least eight other 49ers have been the subject of police investigation since 2012. that includes an incident in miami involving colin kaepernick and quinn onton -- quinton patton. police are calling the incident with a woman suspicious. on friday, chris culliver was in santa clara county superior court. he pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor hit and run and felony possession of brass knuckles. charges stemming from an incident last month in san jose. according to a database of nfl arrests, the 49ers are tied as the team with the most players

arrested since 2012. there have been nine arrests, four of those involve aldon smith. the cleveland browns, denver broncos and lions had nine arrests. the bengals and vikings have had seven players arrested. the oakland raiders have had four arrests. 8:09. autopsy results could be available as early as today on a menlo park woman who disappeared while walking on mount tamalpais. the body of 33-year-old magdaleno was found on saturday in a steep ravine. hikers found her. she kiss appeared on -- disappeared on march 30th. her body showed no obvious signs of trauma. there is another problem on the new span of the bay bridge. it's rust. the sacramento bee reports bust has been found on steel strands and the rods that connect to

the lone suspension cable that wraps around the bridge. the chamber is supposed to keep out water and the salty marine air. a bay bridge spokesperson said there's no concern about corrosion. now, the designer of the new span reportedly warned caltrans some of the wemeds could crack. parts of the -- welds could crack. parts of the sections made in china didn't fit exactly together once they were delivered. the chronicle reports they were allowed to meet lower safety standards to weld those sections together. while design engineers weren't worried about catastrophic failure, they were concerned about quake damage and the frequency of repairs. caltrans told the chronicle that the risk of cracking is remote. 8:10. san francisco's reportedly facing a major rival in its efforts to host a paul mccartney concert. ♪ >> the chronicle reports he's considering a concert for the

police in nigeria say an explosion went off at a busy commuter station as hundreds were on their way to work. more than 70 people were killed. more than 1120 -- more than 120 others injured. the plast ripped a four-foot deep hole in the ground. you can see some of the damage in the pictures.

it also destroyed more than 30 buses. there's been no immediate claim for the responsibility but a terrorist network in the area has been threatening to attack nigeria's capital. tomorrow is the first anniversary of the boston marathon bombings. final preparations are being made now for a ceremony to mark the tragedy. on april 15th of last year, two bombs exploded at the finish line killing three people and injuring more than 200 others. tomorrow at noon, vice president joe biden, massachusetts governor devaul patrick and the current and former mayors of boston will attend a tribute. that will be followed by a flag- raising ceremony and also a moment of violence there at the finish line. this year, the boston marathon will be run on monday, april 21st. there will be tighter security, including police officers stationed at 40 to 50 checkpoints all along the final two miles of the race. 3500 police officers will be at the mafer raw thon, double the

usual -- marathon, double the usual amount. dog sniffing bombs, barriers are being put into place. a southwest airlines jet made an emergency landing in nebraska after passengers say a man tried to open one of the doors on the plane in mid- flight. the plane was headed from chicago to sacramento. a tv producer based in sacramento was on the plane and took this video of the man being escorted off. the producer says when passengers realized what the man was trying to do. many jumped in and tried to stop him. >> back to the flight or fight. i think instingsually when we get into those situations, -- you will cowher freeze or do something about it.

52. san jose at 51. now, sunny, mostly sunny. there's fog not too far away. my guess is it's probably gone by now. if not, it will be soon. upper 40s for a few. 50s for others. temperatures kind of slow to recover. once the fog burns off. don't forget tonight, the full moon and the lunar eclipse around 11:30 to 1:00 this morning. best advice stay away from the coast. >> i think -- there will be fog coming back quick. 60s, 70s, to upper 70s and low 80s. here's sam. >> all right. steve, we're looking a commute in san jose that is just not doing well. they seemingly have had a bunch of problems. northbound 101 at tully is one of them. that's the main crash. in the backup there's word of a new crash, northbound 101 at blossom hill road. a brand-new crash traffic is going to be affected by the slow traffic here. what i want to let you know if you are driving on 785.

i thinkle -- on 85, i think that's a decent alternate route. let's go to the live pictures here and show you that the bay bridge toll plaza, the drive time is about 30 minutes from oakland to san francisco. but about's minutes from san francisco to oakland which is not bad. if you are driving on northbound 880 from here, to downtown oakland. this drive time is about ten minutes. 8:32. back to the desk. boy, it's a fire that sent flames shooting out of a building in san jose and now there are concerns about who may have been inside. take a look at the video. this shows you -- you can see for yourself how intense the flames were. the roof and the walls just caved in making it really hard for firefighters to get in there and fight these flames. it all started in the area of park avenue and montgomery streets. that's where alex savidge is now to tell us why people who work nearby are frustrated by

this fire. why, alex? >> reporter: well, good morning. neighbors -- people would work in the surrounding area here say they have complained for a long time about the homeless encampment set up. people say it was unsafe and filled with trash. people inside were using propane tanks to cook. it was being used by a group of 25 to 30 homeless people and in fact firefighters at this point still aren't entirely sure that everyone made it out during yesterday's fire. that's because there is a concern about the building collapsing. as soon as it is safe, rescuers will go inside and begin looking for victims. the fire began about 3:00 in the afternoon yesterday at this building that's at the intersection of park and montgomery. it used to be a television studio for kntv but it had been vacant since 2004. one woman told us people had been living at the building for years and it turned areas of it into their private apartments.

a man who works just next door says people from the building had broken into his business on a number of occasions. he had called the city several times to complain about the encampment. >> no response. it's kind of like a cat-and- mouse game. but this has gotten really bad. >> and firefighters just can't be sure that everyone made it out during this fire because when they first got here, the roof and the wall had collapsed in many spots. that made it just too dangerous to go inside and search for victims. that search will happen possibly later on today. two firefighters were injured battling the flames yesterday but they do have minor injuries. now arson investigators are working to figure out exactly what started this fire. there are some reports that it was intentionally set. we're live this morning in san jose, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 8:34. later today, in berkeley,

federal investigators will be looking for the cause of saturday's massive fire that destroyed several businesses there. the flames tore through this warehouse at second and hearst. you can see for yourself. not much there besides charred wood. the owners of the wooden duck furniture store said a four- foot thick brick wall saved most of their business and are hoping to open by midweek. >> there's nothing to indicate it's suspicious in nature now but nothing is ruled out until we can rule it out. >> damage is estimated in the millions of dollars. but the exact figure won't really be known until later in the investigation. it's 8:35. santa clara police shot and killed a woman after she charged at them with a baseball bat. it happened yesterday evening on lickmill boulevard near fairway glen park. police say the woman called 911 and made threats to harm herself and others. when officers approached the woman, they say she charged at them with a baseball bat.

that's when they opened fire saying they feared for their safety. the woman died at the hospital. the incident is still under investigation. the parent of a man shot and killed by san francisco police plan to file a claim against the city today. 28-year-old alejandra nieto was killed on march 21st at bernal heights park. police were responding to a 911 call about a man with a gun. they say when they asked him to show his hands, he brought out what looked to be a gun bup it turned out -- but it turned out to be a taser. san francisco's jewish community center is tightening security after the fatal shootings of three people at two jewish centers in kansas. here's video that we took this morning outside of the jewish community center. there are security guards out there right outside of the front doors. this comes after a gunman killed three people near two jewish centers in kansas. the justice department is investigating whether this was

a hate crime. >> it saddens me tremendously that there are individuals who think this way and hold these kind of values in their hearts. the suspect is due in court. he's facing charges of premeditated first-degree murder murder. a couple of hours ago, president obama talked about the shootings in kansas calling them a painful tragedy as he was speaking at an easter prayer breakfast at the white house. >> nobody should have to worry about their security when gathering. no one should have to fear for their safety when they go to pray. >> investigators say the suspected gunman in the shooting is a 73-year-old man, frazier glenn cross, well-known white sprem ma tift and -- supremacist. and there are reports that he was yelling heil hitler when he was arrested. in the last two hours, teachers returned to the pennsylvania high school where

a 16-year-old student stabbed 21 fellow students and a security guard last wednesday. the high school has been closed since then. students and their families will be allowed to visit the school tomorrow but there will be no classes until this wednesday. four students are still in the hospital in critical condition. the stabbing suspect being charged as an adult is due on court april 30th. the motive for the attack is still not clear. 8:38. the city of san jose is considering emergency action designed to immediately get more officers out on the street. tomorrow, santa clara county supervisors will consider a plan to set up a contract with the county sheriff's department. the city would use unspent funds from the police department to increase the number of sheriff's department patrols in san jose. that would be a temporary fix in response to the number of police officers leaving san jose to go to other cities. many officers blame the pension

his latest run-in with the law. now, smith was arrested yesterday at los angeles international airport. he was booked for allegedly making a false report of a bomb threat. smith is also facing charges in two other criminal cases. and the family of five devastated right now afternoon losing moth of their belonging -- most of their belongings and two pets to an early-morning house fire. it started at 4:00 on woodbridge place in fremont. janine de la vega has been there all morning long. moments ago, you saw something, a very emotional goodbye, janine. >> reporter: it was heartbreaking. two chihuahuas died in this fire. let me show you. they are wrapped up in the blanket that you see there laying on the grass and we saw one of the family members bring the surviving chihuahua up to that blanket. the chihuahua sniffed the other two dead dogs in there and we were told by a fire

investigator that that -- that that georgia wanted to give his -- gentleman wanted to give his pet closure. two cars in the drive bay, complete -- driveway, as you can see. i'm told this house is gonna be a total loss. fire investigators have been interviewing each person in this house to figure out how this fire started. here's a picture the fremont fire department put on its twitter account when the fire started before at 4:30 a.m., you can see claims completely engulf this home on woodbridge place on fremont and dakota road. a woman, her elderly mother, and her two daughters as well as a family friend escaped safely with one of their dog, fish and pet turtle. the two chihuahuas ripped through the fire. many were sleeping but heard a loud boom when the fire

started. >> really scary. you know, you hear sounds in the middle of the night, you don't know what they are. i had no idea that it was a fire or that it was on our street until i came outside. >> the flames reached the neighboring house damaging the exterior wall. but firefighters were able to knock down all of the flames in about 40 minutes. the house is unlivable. investigators are estimating 450,000 in damage. the fire investigator is going to look through all of the rubble to see what may have caused this fire to ignite. in the meantime, other neighbors and relatives are helping. they are mourning the loss of their two dogs and, of course, a lot of their belongings in this house. a fire investigator is waiting for actually another investigator to arrive here on scene because, as i mentioned, there's still a lot to go through of all of the charred debris out here. reporting live from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news.

>> thank you. 8:46. an ohio man carried out an unusual court-ordered punishment this weekend. take a look at this. edmond aviv spent yesterday afternoon sitting on his own street with a sign that read, i'm a bully. i pick on children that are disabled. the punishment was part of a plea deal for part of a disorderly conduct charge. he reportedly bullied his next door neighbors and their two adopted disabled children for the past 15 years. >> you wonder every time you walk outside and turn to your left to see if your neighbor is going to scream and yell at you. you don't know why. >> the judge sentenced him to 15 days in jail. sal is back here. he will help you get to where you need to go. 880, everybody behaving themselves? >> yeah. a little bit slow. it's improving. some things have improved. others have not. let's take a look at the

tonight, we have two full moons. get outside at 11:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. 12:42 the full moon and the 12:45 the eclipse. there won't be any high clouds but i think there will be a lot of low clouds on the move. unbelievable amount of weather here, the snow on the ground in denver also parts of iowa. very cold air plunging. warm air on the front side. cold air on the back side. you know when those two come together it probably won't be pretty. rain and severe weather will be popping unin the deep south. for us, it's very quiet. 31 in tahoe. i mink they made it to 25. 51 in ukiah. down in monterey, 52. there's our system it will be in tonight to give a little push. i think that's why the fog will come charging back.

8:53. new this morning, once again, the judge in the murder trial of south african olympic track star, oscar pistorius ended testimony early. it happened after pistorius started to cry on the witness stand. it's happened several times since the former track star went on the witness stand last week. pistorius is accused of intentionally killing his girlfriend last val len tib's day during a -- valentine's day during a night in his home. the prosecutor demanded to know exactly what he said as he moved toward the bathroom.

maid. a jack in the box employee in pleasanton was stabbed several times yesterday. police say it's a case of attempted murder. this happened near valley avenue and san raw tee tau road. the suspect identified as jasmine vazques was seen on -- santa rita road. the suspect identified fi as jasmine vazques was seen on surveillance camera doing this. footage also shows her walking away from the scene. they walk caught up -- police caught up with her in dublin and she's booked on attempted murder. it's being called one of the hardest days of the year for those living in marin county. a winter shelter program comes toen -- to an end. the shelter helped shelter 360 people this winter. that's a huge increase.

>> it's increased gradually to the point where we've had to expand. >> advocates are trying to get a permanent sheltner marin county. san francisco's hot rental marking is leading to the resurgeons of a particular real estate deal. landlords paying tenants to move out. according to the cp chronicle. landlords have made use of buyouts for years but because of economic boom it's happening more often. in one case, a family was offered $50,000 to move out. landlords are only able to make large rent increases on rent- controlled units when tenants leave. in some cases, the rent increases can be thousands of dollars. an unmanned space-x rocket is on the launchpad at cape canaveral scheduled to blast off headed to the international space station to take food and other supplies up there. this is videotape of another launch back in january.
