battle and now crews are trying to figure out what started the massive fire which used to house a bay area television station and there is worry people may have been trapped inside the building. good afternoon i am brian flores in for alex savage and janine de la vega has more on the possible search. >> reporter: right now the building is in ruins and it is a heap of debris. they are trying preserve the scene for evidence. fire officials are working on assembling the arson task force to start the investigation. they have been using the building which has been used as a shelter for the past nine months. the city owns it and about 35 people live inside and it's unknown what happened. he thinks everyone got out safe

except for two dogs. >> it is crazy to wake up and not have anything and wake up and have everything you owned gone and you are already homeless. it is devastating. >>reporter: they will look for evidence on what started the fire and they will look for potential victims. it grew to five alarms and the flames were so intense that firefighters could not enter the building. we are told squatters had to treat it and there is speculation somebody cooking may have started the fire. >> we have seen propane tanks barbecues so there was a lot of home like items, things you would see in your own home and garage that could have fueled that fire. >> reporter: in the past they issued warnings and citations and people continued to come back and live inside. they felt something was bound to happen at the property. >> this should never have

happened. they were trying to keep it from not being noticed since we were impacted, like i said i finally called thursday but whoever went on that call, and somebody saw an officer there why wouldn't that person then call another group to say hey, we have an issue here. >> reporter: there were reports that the fire was intentionally set but we just don't know and fire officials will not know until they go in and start their investigation and we are told that will start happening later in the afternoon. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 morning news. >> reporter: an east bay family is heart broken after losing their two pets. it started at the family's home in fremont, not far from dakota road. the house was engulfed in flames and the fire ripped through the garage and attic.

five people including an elderly woman got out safely but two dogs died in the fire. some say they were wake ended by the sound of an explosion and saw the house on fire. >> you hear sounds in the middle of the night, you son know what they are and i had no idea that it was a fire or that it was even on our street until i came outside. >> the flames reached a neighboring house damaging the exterior wall there. they are estimating $450,000 and the cause is still under investigation. they are warning american college students to be aware of an intelligence threat. they are ramping up effort and the fbi is making this available on its website. it dram mattizes to bring over

a foreign student. they need to recognize if they are being targeted or recruited. a man accused of killing three people outside two jewish facilities will face state and criminal charges. frasier glenn cross was arrested shortly after the shootings in the area of over land park. cross is a former leader of the ku klux klan and the white patriot party. >> yesterday it became fairly apparent it was a hate crime but as we told you yesterday, we needed the verification to make this determination, it is more of just an opinion but a legal status. >> the shootings killed a 14- year-old boy outside of a jewish community center and a woman who was visited her mother in the community. and they are taking action in the wake of the shootings.

live with that part of the story, alex? >> officials here believe what happened here in kansas was an isolated incident, still extra security guards were put on all to put members at ease. all morning we have seen some of those guards here out in the front of a jewish community center and they have been keeping an eye out. representatives said they also had discussions and we did see some police cars making their presence felt. the center said many of them did have concerns about targeting these areas and these people with passover beginning the top. >> we are always vigilant but of course with the passover

it happened near fair way glenn park. police say the woman called 911 and made threats to harm herself as well as others. when officers approached her, she was shot. the man shot planned to file a claim against the city. he was first responding with a man with a fun but it turned out to be a taser. they are investigating a deadly crash, it happened at 3:00 a.m. near pacific avenue. he may have been drinking.

the drivers said there is no time to stop. is the driver of the car is cooperating with the vex. -- investigation. jeffery graves is a 6 year police department veteran and he was accused of raping a woman he was sent to protect last month. the rape occurred at the hotel where the victims once, would the judge has ordered him to turn in his gun and not contact the alleged victim. alden smith following his latest arrest. a ball, they said something about a security act.
