packed trains and commute chaos after an emergency at b.a.r.t.'s montgomery station snarls the evening commute. >> trying to get in to a train that was already pretty much full. >> good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes in tonight for julie haener. >> b.a.r.t. trains grounded to a halt when a woman jumped right in front of a train. it happened in san francisco during the height of the evening commute. service resumed within an hour but by that point the damage was pretty much done. jana katsuyama is at the montgomery station in san francisco with what she's learned about what happened. >> just before 5 p.m., the

evening commute turned chaotic. crowds stretched all the way out of the b.a.r.t. station up to the street. people packed the staircase in the stationary escalator unable to move. many have been diverted from the montgomery station which shut down after a medical emergency on the track. >> we walked up to a big line. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. officials said they sent an alert at 4:49 p.m. a bart train operator called to say a woman was underneath a train on the westbound track. >> everyone was leaving and they said the station was closed so i turned around and left and went back to work. >> reporter: emergency responders uncoupled the cars and found the woman alive. sources tell ktvu she was talking and had a head injury. after about an hour b.a.r.t. workers and police reopened the track but delays continued. >> i got here around 6:15 and i went down to the station and the platform was completely packed. people were trying to get in to

a train that was already pretty much full. >> reporter: train after train rolled by, lines lingered with only a few passengers boarding at a time. one woman with her baby said she waited more than 30 minutes, the trains too full for her to sit with her stroller. >> the trains are just packed. so a guy tried to help me get on but i've got this big stroller so there's no way i'm pushing that today. >> for this time of day, yes. it's a little more than what i'd normally see this time of evening. >> that was jana katsuyama reporting. b.a.r.t. police say there was no foul play and they're investigating why the woman ran on to the track in the first place. she was taken to the hospital and incredibly she's expected to survive. a top executive at ac transit is accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars, not from the transit district but from his church. lewis clinton, jr. is the chief financial officer for ac

transit. the alameda county district attorney says he embezzled a half million from a baptist church in oakland. clinton was the board president of two church corporations that were supposed to provide help to low and moderate income people in oakland. clinton is accused of using that money for his children's private school as well as his own mortgage and a golf club membership. a security guard at a hospital in san jose is behind bars for the alleged molestation of family members and having child pornography. 49-year-old derrick hammond sexually abused two young girls for years. authorities say the molestation began when one girl was 11 and the other was 5. they lived in the home that hammond shared with his wife until their marriage ended. the girls are now older and decided to come forward. >> we always try to resolve these cases short of trial just to spare victims. it's very traumatic for them to go through the trial process. >> hammond is a long time

security guard at valley medical center. investigators say they found violent and graphic child pornography on his computer. hammond is being held without bail. he's scheduled to enter a plea on may 16th. santa clara sheriff's deputies may be put to work in san jose. the county board of supervisors will be discussing the idea tomorrow to help boost the number of patrol officers in san jose. the city has been dealing with a dwindling police force. it began with budget cut and pension reforms. the county would offer the services on a contract basis. deputies will likely patrol near county borders like transit lines and unincorporated parts of the city. a witness needs to come forward tonight. a woman who may have witnessed the sexual assault in a public park.

deborah at gabrielson park. >> investigators say a woman was lourdes in to was lured by --s lured by meeting for drinks by a man offering to help her get a job. >> reporter: a woman says she's been raped and has locked herself in, pleading for police to come. waiting outside the door, her alleged attacker who was arrested without even realizing she's on the phone. >> we're still interviewing him at this point to find out if we can even get what his thought process was at the time. >> reporter: police say this nearby park was the scene of the rape, just after dark last friday. a 51-year-old man identified as diego rodriguez allegedly coaxed the woman to meet him in sausalito. >> he had mentioned to her that he might be able to get her a job where he worked. >> reporter: police say they spent a few hours downtown

together. >> he'd asked her if they could go have some drinks, just kind of hang out that night. she wanted to go home. he made a comment to her that he wanted to show her something in town. >> reporter: that's when they walked the short distance to the park, sitting on a bench by the bay. >> he started to force himself on her. once the sexual acts were completed, they walked together back to one of the local hotels. >> reporter: and she made a bee line for the bathroom up on the second floor of hogio's restaurant. >> there was no awareness. >> reporter: dine --diners had no idea and the victim says no one else was in the restroom when she fled there. >> her call was that she had been raped in sausalito, that she was in a bathroom at a restaurant, that she didn't know exactly where it was at the time and the man was outside the door. >> my heart goes out to her. >> reporter: those who frequent the park are shocked but say it's pitch black here after dark. >> you're just outside of where help can be or where people can

see and you just never know. >> he was forcing himself upon her. what degree she was resisting, we're still looking in to. >> reporter: the victim told police someone walked by with a flashlight during the assault but may not have grasped what was happening. >> we'd really like to get ahold of the white female walking the dog so we can find out if she saw anything and if she did, what she may have seen. >> rodriguez is in custody on $100,000 bail. he appears in court tomorrow. both he and the victim live outside sausalito but work here in town. police say her composure led to his swift capture. reporting live in sausalito. ktvu channel 2 news. an unusual situation at oakland international airport. a tsa screener found a large knife inside some enchiladas that were in a woman's carry-on bag. it happened this morning at the alaska airlines screening

station. while scanning a passenger's bag, the agent spotted something suspicious. it turned out to be a large knife wrapped right inside a container with an enchilada. the woman told authorities she didn't know how it got there and they apparently believed her because she was cleared for travel. the tsa could fine the woman as much as $10,000. new video coming in tonight of dramatic storm damage along the gulf coast. powerful winds overturned about 30 rvs in mississippi about 8:00 tonight. there are reports that two people suffered minor injuries. the national weather service says the damage happened as a strong line of thunderstorms moved through this area. wind gusts were estimated to be 50 miles per hour. prosecutors in kansas say they plan to file hate crime charges against the white supremacist arrested for killing three people at two jewish facilities. 73-year-old frazier glenn miller was arrested for the shootings yesterday in overland park, kansas. witnesses said he shout adnazi

salute. one victim was a 53-year-old woman visiting her father. another was a man and his grandson. the boy's mother said she felt some small relief when she learned her son and father died quickly after being shot in the head. >> i feel confident from what i heard that they didn't feel anything, they didn't know what was coming. they were ambushed. >> mill er was once a ku klux klan leader. he has spoken often about his hatred of jews. none of his victims were jewish. they were christian. the attack comes as people of jewish faith honor the holy week of passover. security was stepped up for tonight for people celebrating the ritual known as seder. >> typically there's a need for security like san francisco's

jewish community center and there's more security due tonight due in passover events but also in light of the triple homicide now declared a hate crime in kansas. >> reporter: a police motorcycle out front, police cars patrolling nearby. an increase in security at the jewish community center in san francisco. it is tied in part to a white supremacist accused of an anti-semitic fueled attack in kansas on the eve of passover, a holiday sylvia paul calls one of celebration. >> and attacks in public places of worship just reaffirms the jewish need to congregate and continue celebrating age-old ritual. >> we talked to paul and others attending the first night commuter seder here at the jcc about the attack on the eve of a holy week. >> unfortunately you have some people that are super negative against a certain group or race and they come out and they do

violence. >> we're exercising heightened vigilance at this time. we're asking staff to be particularly aware and we're in close touch with the san francisco police department. >> reporter: the kansas attacks at jewish sites come as anti-semitic incidents declined by 19% in 2013 according to the antidefamation league. the extra security a precaution that's welcomed by those we talked to. >> unfortunately when you have different hate groups, you have to have security. whether you're jewish or christian or muslim. you have to have your security to be on the safe side. >> i feel secure. yeah. for sure. >> and while that report from the antidefamation league said the anti-semitic incidents were down last year, the report said actual assault on individuals who were jewish or perceived to be jewish increased by 17% last

capturing the day-to-day life of those struggling on the streets of san francisco is all part of a new mission to give people a new perspective on homelessness. the up-close look at life on the streets comes by way of the go-pro camera, the same device used to capture extreme sports. the unique project that was just launched today. amber lee. >> we're where a homeless man is a partner in this project. go-pro projects are often used to capture fun experiences. he's turning in on those he encountered. >> can i get a favor? >> reporter: on most days adam ricart sells a newspaper. >> the expression on someone's face can say more than a thousand words.

>> the bay area reporters did a story on me last week. i'm having my teeth extracted. >> reporter: he recently started wearing a go pro camera at times as part of a project showing what life is like being homeless. >> i've been beat up a couple months ago, a guy got six months in jail for attacking me, to spit on. i get called names all the time. >> i'm trying to get a hotel. >> reporter: the camera captures how others treat him. >> i told you about that, right? yeah. preston brown is doing it for me. >> if people had stopped and talked to me that i've become real friends with over the neighborhood, to me that means more than money ever could. >> reporter: the project is co-founded by tech entrepreneur kevin. the loss of his beloved uncle mark who was homeless in santa cruz inspired him. >> one of the keys to improving situationicize understanding what people's situations are. i don't know too many tools better

38-year-old jeffrey graves did not speak this afternoon as he left the courthouse in san jose. prosecutors say he assaulted a woman at a hotel in september. the woman had been taken to the hotel after a domestic disturbance call. according to reports, the woman waited three weeks before reporting the alleged rape and it happened, the reporting, after the chp had stopped her for suspicion of driving under the influence. the prosecutor says that has no effect on the rape case. >> any notion that she somehow trumped up accusation like this to get out of a dui is irrelevant. >> graves is free on $100,000 bail. he's on administrative leave and is due back in court may 13th. we're learning more about the incident in miami involving

49ers quarterback colin kaepernick. kaepernick and two other players were reportedly partying with an unidentified woman at the vice hotel. the miami police department got a 911 call about a woman naked and passed out. the seattle seahawks wide receiver ricardo lockett made the call and emergency responders brought the woman to the hospital. kaepernick tweeted last week he had done nothing wrong. the los angeles district attorney hasn't yet filed charges against 49ers defensive star aldon smith for a reported bomb threat. he's free on jail, $20,000 bail. smith was taken in to custody yesterday for allegedly telling security he had a bomb. the 24-year-old smith already faces charges in san jose for weapons violations and driving under the influence. a huge visitor swam in to san francisco bay today and biologists are warning people, keep your distance if you happen to see it. this is migration season for the gray whale and as

john fowler shows us, occasionally one of them takes a little detour. >> reporter: it's the gateway from the pacific in to an inviting bay. yesterday afternoon a rare treat. look at this video we obtained shot from the golden gate bridge. a 40-foot adult gray whale swimming in to the bay. it's migrating to alaska. marine biologist bill keener happened to have his camera, even caught a shot of the whale's tail flukes. >> we're very surprised to see a gray whale come in to the bridge under san francisco bay. we see two or three maybe a year and that's because i spent a lot of time on the golden gate brimg. >> we expected probably will stay in the bay for a couple of days, then find its way back out again. >> reporter: mary jane who is on the response team said the whale appeared healthy, perhaps just curious. off the golden gate right now, a northward parade of some 20,000 grays, many mothers with cavs.

continuing coverage now. the horrible bus crash in northern california involving a tour bus and a fedex truck. 10 people died. among them a woman who worked for years as a bus driver here in the base area. rob roth spoke today to someone who knew her and she told rob why she'd sometimes stop her bus in front of his house. >> reporter: they say she was always smiling, always friendly. >> you'd have a bad day, we work 12, 13 hours a day, and you'd come in and see her at night and she'd say me give you

a hug. >> reporter: tala worked for 18 years before leaving to drive for silverado stages. she was behind the wheel when a tour bus struck her. 10 people died including her and she said safety was always her primary concern. >> she'd always comment, anything to make the bus safer. i said exactly. >> reporter: former coworkers near san francisco international airport say even though she left in 2008, people remember her well. >> it's sad. because she's a very hard worker. very likable driver. >> reporter: she was a grad with the of san mateo high school. she leaves behind two children, a grandson and large extended family. rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the driver of that fedex truck tim evans was from elk grove south of sacramento. his friends call him a quote, real

good guy. a neighbor of 20 years said he doesn't believe evans was at fault. >> he was healthy. i think there was something wrong with that truck. i really do. they say the truck came across, it was on fire before it came across the median. >> a witness has said the fedex truck was on fire before the crash but after reviewing the scene, the ntsb said there's no evidence of a fire. investigators say it's too early to tell what may have caused evans to cross on to oncoming traffic. they remain there for as long as 10 more days. a preliminary report could be ready in 30 days. an imposter caught in the act. also ahead -- >> a big crowd is gathered here at the space and science center for tonight's celestial event. what you can expect if you watch tonight's lunar eclipse. >> the backlash of a beautification project. the unforeseen problems causing it

take a look. dumpsters overflowing as a program designed to tackle the problem of illegal dumping on oakland streets runs in to problems of its own. that program has been so successful it nearly backfired. >> christina rendon shows us how a trash day ended up attracting people who weren't supposed to be there at all. >> reporter: every little piece on top of the pile shows the mountain need oakland has for dumping its trash somewhere other than the streets. >> please don't bring another thing out here. we can't take anything else. >> reporter: city councilwoman brooks and community advocate houston partnered up to allow free dumping at 10 sites in the city till wednesday.

make sure people are residents at the city. ktvu.com we've posted a list of those sites. they're open through wednesday. just look for the web link section under hot topics. san leandro police called in the bomb squad today after a report of two live hand grenades at a garbage company. it happened about 3:50 this afternoon at the headquarters for alameda county industries. police say employees found the grenades and called 911. the business was evacuated until the alameda county sheriff's office bomb squad took the grenades away and had them destroyed. the family of a man shot and killed by san francisco police officervise take -- officers have taken the first steps toward filing a lawsuit against the city. police were called to heights on march 31st after they had calls of a man with a gun. police fired on nieto after police say he

be dangerous but stargazers can look as long as they want tonight. >> lunar eclipses are completely safe. safer than looking at the full moon. >> reporter: by 8:00 tonight the amateur astronomers began showing up getting ready for tonight's big show. >> i don't know. it's a big deal to me because as a child i never really noticed these things but now that i do, it's kind of magical. >> reporter: while the lunar eclipse will be the main event, stargazers get a special bonus tonight. mars also happens to be at its closest to earth and will shine bright in the night sky. >> we get a double whammy there. we get to see the eclipse red, mars red, the red show. [ laughter ] >> tonight's eclipse is the first in a series. we'll see three more over the next two years, one coming about once every six months. it's not too late to catch tonight's eclipse which begins at 11:00. it will

be darkest between midnight and 1:30, that is if the clouds clear in time. we now go to the man who has the answer, tracking those clouds. how about it, bill? >> most of the bay area, you're fine. but check out along the coast. this is san francisco airport. the fog is in. if you're at ocean beach in san francisco, pacific or half moon bay, you can see the fog. over toward the west, very foggy conditions. that's a live picture. that's where the fog is. that's where you can't see it. here's what's going on. this is what he was alluding to. these high clouds look like they're going to obscure the moon but they won't. this is enough breakage here. right along the coast you're not seeing anything but once you get around san rafael and oakland, okay visibility. it's not going to be 100%. bull you'll -- but you'll be able to see the moon. fog right at the coast. that's the only place you're not going to see

it. i'll see you back at 10:45. got the weather forecast and a cooling trend. wall street today regains some of what it lost last week. the dow was up 146 points. the nasdaq was up 22. the gains came on encouraging news about the biggest increases in retail sales in two years. google is branching out in to the sky. google says it's buying titan aerospace which makes solar-powered dones. it's also working on building satellites. google says the satellite could bring the internet to remote spots around the world and help in disaster relief by surveying the damage. the price to buy titan aerospace was not revealed. a few weeks ago facebook was in negotiations to buy titan. google will sell google glass starting early tomorrow morning and the number available is limited. the sales start at 6 a.m. google glass will cost you $1500 plus tax. you can sign up with google tonight to get an alert.

the search for the missing malaysia airlines plane ran in to a snag. the u.s. navy underwater drone was supposed to search deep in the indian ocean for 16 hours. six hours in to that dive, the blue fin 21

exceeded its depth limit and a built-in safety device returned it to the surface. it detects possible wreckage. intriguing clue to flight 370 involves the copilot. several reports say the cell phone of the first officer was turned on and the phone searched for a signal about 30 minutes after the malaysia jet turned off course. this suggests it was flying low enough to get a signal from a cell tower. pilots are supposed to turn their cells off when they push back from the gate. a knife was found today in an enchilada at an airport security checkpoint. the tsa earlier told us it was found at oakland international airport. now a tsa spokesperson says it was actually found at the sonoma county airport near santa rosa. oakland airport manages security

for the sonoma airport. new at 10:00, supporters of a small sonoma county hospital say they're determined to keep the doors open. about 100 people turned out tonight to strategize how to save palm drive hospital. the facility is losing money and the board voted for bankruptcy and closure by the end of the month. doctors are rallying the community to reinvent the hospital as a leaner, doctor-managed operation. >> they hand off the but onto us, the doctors, and we'll run very, very well and we'll show the hospital is a success and is vital for the care of particularly emergencies in the west county. >> if palm drive does close, patients in the area would have to travel a half hour to hospitals in santa rosa. the woman accused of throwing a shoe at hillary clinton during a speech is now facing federal charges. local prosecutors in las vegas already charged 36-year-old allison michelle earns with misdemeanor
