a deadly boat crash is under investigation. it has a broken mast. we'll have a live report to let us know how what was a casual race turned deadly. it is thursday, april 17. >> good morning. let's talk about weather and traffic. what should we look forward to? >> mostly sunny. we do have a few high clouds to the south that will get pushed off to the east pretty fast. not a lot of fog yet, but it's

raring to go and will ramp up late this afternoon, tonight and into tomorrow. this will give us a pretty good cooldown. mostly sunny with higher clouds, mostly clear and a little bit of fog creeping back by this afternoon and tonight. there's not a lot there for fog right now. brisk at the napa airport. overall mostly sunny and then tonight and tomorrow we start to pick up the fog, and that system right there will sweep through and give us a cooldown. mostly sunny, 60s, 70s coast and bay and upper 70s and low 80s inland. we do have a problem in san jose here, and this crash

happened just after midnight on the expressway at coleman road. it's turned into a major investigation. serious injuries hereafter two cars collided and police are saying that alcohol may be a factor in the crash. the expressway at coleman road is a good area to avoid. these pictures were taken overnight. police are still there. avoid the intersection of the expressway and coleman road. let's take a look at westbound 580. a lot of slow traffic coming in. if you drive through dublin and get over to the valley, you might want to jump ahead of this crowd. it's taking a good long time, about 30 minutes at least to get through livermore and dublin and part of the pass. moving along to the bay bridge toll plaza, the meat terring list are on and we have about a 15 to 20 minute drive time between oakland and san francisco. it's 6:03. let's go back to the desk. an investigation underway

into a deadly sailboat crash off the coast of redwood city. it happened yesterday evening in redwood creek. we're live at the marina where police are now securing the boat. good morning, tara. >>reporter: good morning. the police officer is here keeping a watchful eye on the boat. it's called the bella. you can see the mast has been snapped completely off. we know it was racing with the yacht club, and the beer can races kicked off for the first time this season, but we don't know if this boat was part of that race. last night we watched the coroner remove the body of the person that was killed. another person was badly injured. the mast snapped when it struck a marker bayou way in the channel. they had a difficult time getting to rescue because of the shallow water. they were able to transport them to firefighters.

they're saying the person received a head injury and others onboard were not hurt. according to the yacht club's website, the races are intended to be a relaxed and casual format that allows new participants to learn about sailboat racing and gives experienced racers and crews practice. drinks are served afterward at the club. investigators spent hours going over the bella and have not released the name of the victim. we've reached out to the police department handling the investigation, but haven't heard back yet. we're still following an investigation in san jose into the death of a nine month old baby boy. police say the child's father found him in a car around 7:20 last night. police sources tell us that it appears the father may have forgotten to drop the boy off at the baby-sitter before he went to work. the investigation is not completed as yet.

it is 6:05. there's a stunning new development in the investigation into a weekend fire that destroyed a former studios of the san jose tv station. investigators say specially trained dogs have detected possible human remains in the rubble. this morning the dogs will join a team of investigators to resume the search of the now gutted building on park avenue. they want to find out if this could be tied to three people reported missing after sunday's fire. >> we have an excavation for possible human remains that we may have found. we're hearing there possibly could be other pets that were in the structure, but they are very much well-trained in just looking for human remains. >> yesterday police arrest had a homeless man suspected of starting the fire. the 55-year-old is now behind bars facing charges of arson and burglary. a witness says she watched him spray some kind of liquid on a

mattress and that a fire started seconds later. time now 6:06. police in antioch busy piecing together what happened in a shooting from last night that left a boy dead. alex is live in the area now with what the neighbors are saying about that killer. alex? >>reporter: a number of neighbors heard the gun fire last night and some came outside to investigate and found the victim in this case described by 1 neighbor as a teenaged boy lying here on this area of the sidewalk. this is on country hill right off of hillcrest avenue. the victim, according to neighbors, had no pulse when they found him. the calls came into police just after 8:30. the first arriving officers tried to revive the boy and so did paramedics, but he was eventually pronounced dead here at the scene. the victim's name has not been released and police have not said at this point why this boy may have been targeted.

one neighbor told me he's not surprised by the deadly shooting. >> pretty much every friday night there's a helicopter and usually a group of kids out there, teenagers. it's gotten pretty bad out here. >>reporter: this was the third deadly shooting here in antioch in just the last two weeks. first a man was begunked was gunned down outside a liquor store and then a jewelry storeowner shot and killed. i'm still working to get more information on the victim and shooter that officers are now searching for. i have calls into antioch police and we'll let you know as soon as we hear back with updated information in this case. coming up, what one neighbor says this teenage victim may have been doing just before he was shot. we're live this morning at antioch, ktvu news. two teenagers have been charged with a shooting outside

a liquor store. anthony perez and antonio alia killed a man last week. perez is being charged as an adult and police say both have gang connections. they've not released a possible connection between the suspects and victim. investigators trying to determine the cause of a tragic fire in the visitation valley neighborhood. a mother and her three-year-old son were killed in yesterday's fire at the sunny dale housing project. other people jumped out of a second story window to escape the flames. we spoke to the heartbroken father of the little boy who died. >>reporter: he was a great kid, smart, loved football, sports, a real boy's boy. i'm not going to sit here and go on and on, but i know i'm really going to miss him a whole lot. he just comes in the room and says good morning, dad. >> the building that burned is part of san francisco's biggest

public housing development. 1700 people live in the former military barracks near the cow palace. a county judge will listen to evidence before making a final ruling on the shut down of the drake's bay oyster company. they say they ignored evidence of potential environmental harm. the federal government allowed the farm's lease to expire in 2012. since then the oyster company has lost several court appeals as it battles to stay open. an oakland teenager is expected to be sentenced to life for a shootout that took the life of a toddler. it was caught on surveillance video back in 2011. police say frederick coleman fired the bullet that killed

the boy. as part of a plea deal his life sentence will include the possibility of parole after 25 years. police in freemont have now arrested three people in connection with an armed robbery of a man at an atm. investigators say a 22-year-old and 24-year-old and 17-year-old boy were arrested yesterday. on tuesday police release this had surveillance footage. we showed you this yesterday on the morning news. they say it shows two of the suspects using the victim's credit cards at a convenience store a short time after last week's robbery. an important step in the investigation into last week's deadly crash near chico. what they're doing today to try to recreate the collision between a fed ex truck and tour bus full of students. plus a new concern that this year's boston marathon, why some of the runners are not supposed to be running and what will happen if they're caught. good morning. right now we're looking at a

of making findings without attending the autopsy. the trial will adjourn until may 5 because of scheduling conflicts with other cases. it is 6:15. a year after the boston marathon bombing experts say little has been done to prevent future attacks from homegrown terrorists. funds to help city's prepare for a possible attack may be cut. congress also has not passed legislation to address intelligence failures. the announcement comes after russia said they warned of the attacks several months before it happened.

x boxes that have been sold, and they went on sale at almost the same time. samsung says sales of the relently released galaxy s5 are much better than the previous version, but they will not reveal exactly how many of the newest phones were sold. they did say 10 million galaxy s4s sold in the first month they were available. a disturbing new development in the ferryboat disaster off the coast of south korea. the new report is raising fears the death toll could go much higher. growing complaints of bed bugs on bart trains. what an investigation has uncovered.

oakland has been looking at different education models to boost student achievement and has spent millions of dollars trying to reduce truancy.

graduation rates are increasing and some schools still have very high dropout rates. we have a follow-up to a 2 investigates report of possible bed bugs on bart trains. they took one car out of service, thoroughly cleaned it and then returned it to service. we then checked out how often bart receives complaints about dirty cars, and learned that bart received 39 such complaints last year. bart says it responds immediately to rider concerns. >> basically every time the train reaches the end of the line, someone walks through quickly, picks up small pieces and then that night gets a proper cleaning. when people call in about something specific, we obviously respond and do that property cleaning. >> they said they met their goal for train cleanliness in the most recent quarterly review, but a customer satisfaction survey gave them the lowest ratings in six

service areas, including the condition and cleanliness of train seats. bart doesn't think it will have too many complaints about its new fleet of cars. it showed off a model during a presentation at san francisco's plaza yesterday. take a look. bart says the new cars will have better seats, bike racks, more handholds and lcd screens that will show the location of the train and its next stop. the next public showing of the trains is tomorrow at the west oakland bart station. a bay area man will be honored by the white house today for his efforts to create jobs and economic opportunity in solar power. a champion of change is being honored, the cofounder of grid alternatives, the company's largest nonprofit solar installer. the white house says they make solar energy possible for low

we're still following a deadly boating crash. one person dead, another one seriously hurt. they were on that boat that's straight in front of you right now, the bella. tara is also there and will give us an update on the continuing investigation in about two minutes from now. >> zooming in on the broken mast, which was a big part of the problem. >> big part of it. thank you for joining us here at ktvu channel 2 morning news. a quick look at weather and traffic. still a little fog out there, steve? >> a tiny bit. some will start to pick up in intensity as the system comes in. higher clouds favoring santa cruz over to san jose. mostly sunny, patchy fog on the coast. the westerly breeze not too bad right there.

this is still offshore. the leading edge of the system comes in. 40s and 50s, 52 concord, napa 45. sfo53 degrees. lows kind of holding steady here. a few high clouds, mainly to the south bay or santa cruz mountains. 30s in the mountains, 40s, 50s around here. highs today under mostly sunny skies in the 60s, 70s or very low 80s. the cooldowns, i'll have more on that in a few minutes. we're looking at a problem in san jose. we're still following up on a major crash that happened just after midnight on the expressway at coleman road. two cars collided, very high- speed collision, and one person has died as a result. now, one of the things we do know is that the investigation continues as you get to the area. you'll have to use an alternate

route. we're arriving on the scene and will have more information in a live report from the scene coming up. this is a look at the span of the bay bridge westbound. a little slow. we had earlier problems on the span. it's kind of sluggish through the haze there. you can also see the traffic at the toll plaza backed up. there's also a crash reported at west grand on the shoulder. this drive time has rocketed up to about 30 to 35 minutes. an investigation underway into a deadly sailboat crash during a race near redwood city. we're live at the marina where the boat is docked with new details about the race the boat was participating in. tara, you're now getting a better idea of how horrific this crash was. >>reporter: yeah, unfortunately that is the case. now that the sun has come up, we can see a lot of blood all

over the boat, giving you an idea how horrible this must have been for the people onboard the boat. there's crime scene tape there. it's called the bella. the boat, as you can see, has the mast completely snapped off. last night we watched the coroner remove the body of one person killed and another was badly injured. this happened just before seven:00. the boat's mast snapped when it struck a marker bayou way in a channel. boats had a difficult time coming to bella's aid because it was in shallow water, but they were able to reach them and get the two injured people onboard and transport them to firefighters. the fire department says the survivor suffered a head injury, and we've not been able to receive an update on the victim's condition. we know that the three others onboard were not hurt. we know the bella was racing with the yacht club and the

beer can races kicked off last night for the first time of the season, but we don't know if the boat was part of the race. the races are a very relaxed and casual event allowing new racers to learn about the sport and crews an opportunity to practice. drinks are served at the club. investigators may be releasing the name of the victim in about two hours. we'll tell you what we learn. new information now about the ferryboat disaster in south korea. cnn is reporting that one of its affiliates says there were 46 live boats on that ferryboat, but only one live boat was deployed. the death toll stands at nine, but 287 passengers are still missing this morning. rescue crews say some of the missing may still be alive if they found some air pockets to breathe inside the cap sized ship.

the captain of the ship who was able to escape safely hid his face as reporters swarmed around him. >> i'll really sorry and deeply ashamed. i don't know what to say. >> now the captain may face charges of negligence and accidental homicide. some of the survivors say there were instructions broadcast on the ferry for people to stay put and not move when the ship ran into trouble. this morning antioch police are investigating a deadly shooting in a usually quiet neighborhood. the victim is a teenage boy. alex savage joins us with what one neighbor says he saw at the crime scene. >>reporter: good morning. one neighbor told me it appeared as though the victim had been riding a small motorcycle, what's commonly known as a pocketbook just before being shot. quite a few people who live around here heard the gun fire and many came outside when they found this teenage boy lying here in the sidewalk. this is on country hills drive

right off of hillcrest avenue. one neighbor told me when they found the victim, he had no pulse. the calls started coming into police just after 8:30 last night, and the first officers who got here tried to revive this boy, but he was ultimately pronounced dead here at the scene. the victim's name has not been released and police have not said why this boy may have been targeted. one neighbor says this killing is the latest of problems in the area. >> it doesn't surprise me. last night i was laying in bed watching sons of anarchy and i heard some shooting going on. i thought it was fire crackers. there's always something going on over here. >> i'm continuing to work on getting new details on both the victim and shooter, but officers are searching for him. we'll let you know as soon as we hear back with any updated information. coming up, we'll tell you why

this deadly shooting last night caps off what was a very violent week here in the city of antioch. . they're pooling resources to conduct tests to help determine what caused a deadly bus crash and fire on interstate 5. a highway patrol investigation team and engineer will go to the scene and try to recreate last thursday's crash between a fed ex truck and tour bus. ten people were killed including five high school students on their way to tour humboldt state university. they'll use vehicles similar to those in the crash to analyze issues such as speed, braking and visibility. ktvu will be on hand and provide updates online and on the air throughout the day. a south bay woman has filed a class action lawsuit against pier one imports, claiming she

was forced to take unpaid leave because she was pregnant. her doctor said not to climb ladders or lift anything more than 15 pounds and the store responded by putting her on light duty eight weeks then forced her to take unpaid leave months before her due date. >> i was completely shocked and hurt because i've been such a loyal dedicated employee for that company for two years. i figured they had some kind of policy for pregnancy, you know. it wasn't just eight weeks and you're out the door. >> according to her attorney, pier one has a policy of putting pregnant women on light duty for a maximum of eight weeks and then automatically puts them on unpaid leave if they continue to need accommodations. pier one has made no comment on the lawsuit. happening today, work

begins on probably the most important part of the 49ers new football stadium, and you are sure to see it every time they make a touchdown pass or tackle. we're live at the stadium where we're waiting for the new field to arrive, the new turf. is it there yet? >>reporter: i don't know. we've been keeping our eye out for the trucks that are hauling in the sod. they may have already arrived because there's numerous entrances around the new stadium. it's still a construction site. we're told that the man that's been growing the grass is a fan of the team and has taken pride in his job. let's go to pictures of the new grass fields while was being grown by west coast turf. it needs just half the water as average turf. it will take 2.5 acres of sod to cover the field. the 49ers chose it because it holds up better and they think

will cut the risk of players' injuries. the sod will be installed today and friday, and once it's done it will really make the stadium look complete. here's pictures posted on the 49ers website showing what it looks like inside the stadium now. you can see the seats have been installed. the goal posts are up, and once the grass is put down it will bring life to the field. they also provide turf to other local sports teams including the raiders and giants. the first team to officially play on it will be the san jose earthquakes because they have a soccer match coming up in august. a lot of the construction workers have been helping build the stied stadium are excited about this latest news that the sod is going to be installed today. you'll hear from one of them coming coming up.

people may face dramatic mandatory water cut backs. a 20 5%% cut has been approved. officials say if people don't reduce their water usage, outdoor watering could be banned completely this summer. livermore has announced mandatory cuts of 5% for in door and 50% outdoor use. dublin could propose 5% in door

today could be the last day of a massive above-water search in the indian ocean for the missing malaysia airlines jet. 12 planes and 11 ships have been searching 15,000 miles of sea looking for signs of debris on the surface of the water. now the search is focused under water using a u.s. navy submarine to scan the floor of the ocean.

investigators are analyzing the information from the sub's first full 16-hour mission. they're also saying that an oil slick in the area doesn't appear to be connected to the missing plane. back in the country, the town of west texas is rebuilding. they're reflecting on the deadly fertilizer plant explosion that happened one year ago today. a man captured the fire and giant explosion as he was driving past the plant. that blast killed 15 people, a lot of them volunteer firefighters. it leveled the fertilizer plant and destroyed homes and schools. now 70 homes are rebuilt or under construction. they're considering whether to allow another fertilizer plant in. farmers have to travel 30 miles

away to get the fertilizer they need. the mayor says if a new plant comes to town it would have to be a lot safer. berkley police searching for clues after a shocking discovery. a 16-year-old girl was found naked and pepper sprayed early yesterday morning. police say she may be the victim of sex trafficking. the girl's screams woke up neighbors who immediately rushed to help. >> i opened the window and heard that she said, i want water. i've been pepper sprayed. she kept on shouting very loud. >> i jumped up out of bed and said to my husband, you hear that? >> police say the girl had been kidnaped and sexually assaulted in another city and then was dropped off in this berkley neighborhood. she was then rushed to the hospital to be treated for injuries. there's no word this morning on her condition.

suspended state senator back in court for a critical hearing. a judge in san francisco is expected to set the legal guidelines for prosecutors handing over evidence to the defense team in this wide reaching political corruption case. the 65-year-old yee has pled not guilty to charges ranging from septembering bribes for political favors to gun trafficking. several co-defendants are also due in court today, including a former china town gang member and san francisco political consultant keith jackson. a measure to raise the minimum wage is on hold. city council passed it last month and just needed a final vote for it to become law. the ordinance would raise the city's minimum wage by increments to $12.30 an hour by the year 2017. but in a move that supplied a lot of people the city council

decided to delay a final vote. some of the council members want a full study first with input from local businesses before they're willing to give final approval. google stock is down over 2% right now in early trading. it has been down more than 3% in premarket trading. that was in reaction to its first quarter earnings report after yesterday's closing bell. google did announce revenue topped $15 billion was up nearly $2.5 billion from the same time last year. also online advertising was up 910%. all sounds great, but that did not meet analyst expectations -- 19%. new this morning, the number of americans filing new unemployment claims inched up from its lowest level in seven years. in the new report released, 304,000 people applied for 1st- time job less claims.
