this morning. >> thank you very much. we do have a little bit of fog around. but not too much. mainly confined to the san mateo coast. clear or mostly clear elsewhere. we will deal with cooler temps today. 50s and 60s at noon. 60s around the bay. a little breeze will pick up. it's showing signs of decreasing a little bit. i expect that to crank up a little bit today. you can see that fog favoring santa cruz and san mateo coastline. a lot of low 50s around. not too much of a howling breeze. sfo up to 21 but now it's only 9. system came by and didn't do much but it is setting a stage for a cooler day today. that is all that is left of it and high pressure, weak high pressure will build in for your weekend. it will be a little cooler. 70s inland. 60s coast and bay. here is sal. we are looking at a commute that looks pretty good so far. i do want to show you that traffic is moving along pretty

well. but there are some slow spots on this good friday. even though financial markets are closed and there is also some spots where or some schools that are closed i should say. let's go out and take a look at the toll plaza here. you can see traffic is doing pretty well. no major problems coming through. and the traffic is moving along very nicely as you head into san francisco i do want to mention that ellis annular kin is a good area to avid right now. grant line road still about 22 minutes. speeds about 57 miles an hour on westbound 580 and from high street it's only five minutes. highway 4 lone tree to loverage. a batched burglary ends with a man fighting back against his intruder and killing him. tara moriarty is joining us from the victims home to tell

us what he did that possibly saved his own life. >> reporter: the man that was going to get burglarized took matters into his own hands. he spot and killed the intruder. the intruder scaled that wall that you see behind me there. there are a bunch of evidence markers. police are still sifting through this crime scene. that is because there is a lot of unanswered questions. this shooting happened at 1:15 this morning. the man was shot a few times in the eggs. he was alert when police arrived but his injuries were very serious. serious enough to be air lifted to a hospital. the man was sleeping when the suspect broke into the building and confronted him and shot him in the chest. they don't think the burglar thought that anybody was home. this is a building. it's a plumbing business and the victim lives if a unit in the back. it does look like it's simply a commercial building. the suspect was driven driven to a nearby hospital. the people that transported him are now in custody.

they are telling police they were nearly passing by and being good samaritans but police believe they did know the suspect. plisses they -- police are investigating whether they shot the man in the legs or if the bullet did come from the suspect into the victim. we put a call into richmond police and we are hoping to talking to witnesses to find out what they thought. time is 6:04. a little less than an hour ago sirens went off in san francisco marking the moment 108 years ago that the great quake hit san francisco. now this ceremony was held at lottis fountain in downtown san francisco. hundreds of people were there for a moment of silence and a wreath laying ceremony. the 19 of quake and fire killed about 3,000 people. it destroyed 80% of the city. now about 20 minutes ago a special fire hydrant. this one here in san francisco.

received a fresh coat of gold paint. it's at 20th and church streets. this fire hydrant is known for saving the mission district. it was the only working fire hydrant in that area after the wake. that fire hydrant gets a fresh coat of paint every year. yesterday san francisco dignitaries gave two other fire hydrants a coat of silver paint. they also played big roles in fighting the fires after the 1906 quake. only 23 of more than 4,000 fire hydrants in san francisco had a useful water supply after that big quake. marin county investigators are working to determine if another body found on mt. tam is that of a missing woman. brian flores is there right

now. brian. >> reporter: good morning claudine. unusual circumstance the body found in the past three weeks. while one body has been positively identified, a second body found yesterday authorities say they have to run more tests before that body is identified. here are some of the details of what we know this morning. the bodies found was around 4:40 yesterday afternoon in a drainage area along the mountainside. authorities say it's believed the woman was fbi identified may have fallen 40-50 feet into a drainage area which is filled with rocks, bolders, and rough terrain. it is unclear whether this body found is that of a missing mill valley woman. however, investigators did say there are some similarities. >> i will say that the description of this person including the clothing does match that. she was found in a drainage. at this point it appears she may have possibly fallen. maybe 40-50 feet down into the drainage which sadly is covered with large rocks and bolders

and so forth. >> reporter: now back on saturday just about half to three quarters of a mile from last nights discovery 33-year- old magdolina her body was also found. she told friends she was also going for a hike but never returned. during a press conference yesterday even though the bodies were found in the same area, there doesn't appear to be a connection there. investigators also say they are awaiting toxicology reports before making a positive identify on the body. we're live in mill valley brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. it is now 6:07. a san leandro teacher accused of having sex with a student surrendered to police. leon chang has been charged with two felonies. the arrest came after an investigation that lasted for months. the school district received a tip that the math teacher at

san leandro high was involved in a sexual relationship with a student. the students say they were shocked by the allegations and they called chang a good teacher known for making math fun like encouraging the students to dance in class. >> he was a nice teacher. he was just into the kids. he cared a lot about his students. >> reporter: san leandro high school is on spring break right now. the students and staff are due to return on monday. all right we continue to follow breaking news for you in san francisco. i want to give you a live look at the scene. it looks like traffic is moving through that intersection. it was stopped for awhile. this is ellis and larkin. there was a car verses bicycle collision. we were out there on the scene earlier and saw the truck that was involved as well as the bicycle that pulled out from underneath that truck. the bicyclists we are being told now our crew being told

that he was conscious when she was transported. police are again clearing the scene there. a task force investigating hate crime allegations at san jose state university is now releasing its recommendations. this comes after four white freshmen were accused of bullying their african american roommate by putting a bicycle lock around his neck and also flying a confederate flag. the student who said he was bullied filed a $5 million legal claim against the university. the four students that were accused of bullying have been suspended. the task force recommendations include diversity training for all fault and dorm staff. creating a diversity office. and requiring new students to take diversity training. students would also be given the option of recording hate crimes on the university website. federal prosecutors in the corruption case involving state senator leland yee say they

plan to add more charges. reified indictment is expected in july with new charges including racketeering. prosecutors now say most of the 29 defendants could be charged with those offenses and that alone could carry a sentence up to 20 years. the fate of the sonoma county supervisor accused of peeping into a woman's home that will be decided in the next couple of weeks. jury selection in the trial is expected to start monday. a hearing to settle motions in the case will be held this morning. he is charged with misdemeanor peeping. he could be sentenced to six months in jail if he is convicted. police accuse him of looking into a neighbor's house last july. police say he was only wearing his underwear and socks. carrillo has pleaded not guilty. he blames the incident on a drinking problem. bart riders may see a lot of police activity. bart police and the

the boat's driver passed a sobriety test. new developments this morning in the deadly ferry boat crash in south korea. prosecutors asked a court to issue an arrest warrant for the ferry boats captain. 28 bodies have been recovered. 270 people are still missing. most of theme are high school students. we're also finding out that a high school vice principal who was one of the first survivors to be rescued committed suicide today near gym where the family members of the missing have been camping out. heavy rains and rough currents out on the seas have been hampering the rescue. >> the probe tried to get to the ferry but it got pushed off course. >> investigators were also looking into whether the captain waited too long to order an evacuation and they are checking reports he got on one of the first rescue boats. a third mate was steering it

and may have made a sharp turn. causing the ferry boat to capsize. now this new search comes as 11 planes and 12 ships continue scanning the surface of the water for any sign of that missing flight. the search area spans 20,000 square miles of the ocean northwest of purse, australia. time 16:16. the first cross border airport terminal it cleared a major hurdle. the u.s. department of customs and border protection reached an agreement with an investor group clearing the way for the construction to start. it will connect san diego and tijuana, mexico. construction will start next month. as early as this afternoon a san francisco giants fan could be arraigned encharmings that he set -- arraigned on

loud dramatic outbursts in the san diego trial of an immigrant from iraq accused of killing his wife. a jury found him guilty yesterday. and as he was listening to the verdict being translated through the headphones you can see him wagging his finger and shaking his head the the jury. prosecutors say he killed his wife because he was angry she wanted a divorce. the district attorneys office will seek the death penalty. in the murder of an eight-year- old oakland girl. 23-year-old darnell williams is charged with shooting and

killing alicia during a sleepover last july. she was killed when williams knocked on the door of the home where she was staying an started shooting. two other children and a 63- year-old woman were hurt. time is 6:25. the drought could make fire season very, very difficult and oakland may be getting more help. right now the city of oakland closes one of its 25 fire stations for three days on a rotating basis. it's been doing that for two years to save $2.5 million a year. but that could mean it takes fire crews longer to get to emergencies. >> that causes a delayed response time. not only for incidents that occur within that companies first district but it could cause a trickle effect down the line to surrounding naked -- down the line to surrounding neighborhoods as well. >> they agreed to stop the rolling brownout policy. the city council and the union members still have to approve it first but approval is

where a man fights back after he says someone tried to break into a building. this is a story we've been following since 4:30 this morning. ktvu tara moriarty just got off the phone with someone from the richmond police department. you are back now. you have a better idea of how violent that confrontation was. >> yeah definitely. now that the sun is up you can see a lot of blood on the sidewalk. we did speak with police. they are remaining pretty tight lipped. [ inaudible ] >> now we have a technical interruption for a moment. but you are seeing some of what tara moriarty has been reporting on this morning. a shooting that occurred in the richmond area this morning. a man who fought back said an intruder was breaking into a business in the richmond area. this is still being investigated. a lot of police activity still at the scene as they investigate exactly what happened. stay tuned. tara will be back.

we spoke to someone who says the map that lives here had ablooming business. the shooting happened at 1:15 this morning. the owner was shot a few times in the leg and he was alert when police arrived but his injuries were serious. the victim confronted the suspect and shot him in the chest killing him. >> what happened and every person who has a right to protect their family their property and unfortunately if people are put into that position sometimes things you know evolve and develop the suspect was driven to a nearby hospital and the people that transported him are in custody

at the richmond police station. they are saying they were passing by and being good samaritans but police believe they did know the suspect. back here live you can see the police are still here. we have an update on the victim here. he is listed in serious condition but he is expected to survive. we are live in richmond tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:38. two highway workers are recovering after being hit by a driver that the chp says appears to be drunk. workers were hit during a lane restriping. this was shortly after 9:00 last night. the chp the workers with were closing down lanes from interstate 80 and highway 12 when they were hit. the chp is also reminding other drivers slow down when you are in the construction zone. >> you want people to slow down. give yourself ample time and

space and distance to make any type of ma sure left or right around the area. we need people that need to go home to the families as well. >> the two highway workers were taken to a north bay hospital. their injuries are described as minor. the driver has major injuries. once he's out of the hospital, the chp says he faces dui charges. eight-year-old boy was among the people hurt in suspected drunk driving crash in san leandro. he ran a red light around 10:00 last night. that suv hit a car which had a couple and two children inside. the suv driver a woman in her 40s was arrested. police say she showed obvious signs of intoxication. news chopper 2 was over the scene. it was head into a maintenance

yard when it went off the tracks. no passengers were on board. that detrailment came on the same day they handed down a $210,000 fine over an accident that killed two bart workers in october. osha investigation found bart deliberately violated safety rules and the agencies simple approval policy was ineffective and not followed. the investigation also cited bart for not supervising the trainee who was at the controls of the train. cal osha says shepard and daniels were not properly trained to perform work near energized third rails. barts general manager released a statement saying quote bart has upgraded its safety

breach. paul. >> good morning. i can tell you a lot of people use michaels the arts and crafts store to go shopping. but right now they are in a little bit of a problem. michaels is the largest craft store in the country. the security breach in its payment system is what is effected. information from three million credit card and debt card used at michaels arts and craft stores could be effected. the company says the malware used in this attack has never been seen before but two security firms it has investigated the case. now michaels once again is the nation's largest arts and craft chains says it has 2.6 million credit cards effected. the company says things have been contained and received limited information about fraudulent activity. however this is going on since may of last year. now the companies say they have received very little reports of any problems but they are also working with the effected customer by offering them free identity protection for 12

tragic death of a nine-month- old baby left inside of a car. police say the baby's father was supposed to drop off the little boy at a babysitter wednesday morning but somehow forgot and left him in the car. police say the baby had been in that car for several hours and when they found him, he was still strapped into his child seat. >> i don't know how it happened. he got distracted or something. when he got back he found the baby. he called 911. and when they came over they found him dead. >> many say they are haunted by the tragedy because some of them were working outside within feet of that suv and didn't notice the baby inside. the investigation continues. the ride sharing service uber x is adding what it calls a safe ride fee to all fairs in the u.s.. uber which is based in san francisco says the $1 fee will
