and business. tara moriarty tells us how the resident protected himself but almost lost his own life in the process. >> the 68-year-old homeowner was alert after being shot in the leg several times but seriously hurt and had to be airlifted to the hospital. >> sometimes the describe subsides for a while but it's not surprising. >> it all began at 1:15 this morning. the burglar tried to break into the home on 13th street. the homeowner opened the door and shot the burglar in the chest. the burglar jumped awall wall leaving a trail of blood and other evidence including a wristwatch before collapsing on the sidewalk. it wasn't over for the homeowner. the burglar's three friends appeared. >> a shootout occurred in this yard where a suspect or suspects fired at the homeowner who was standing over near that doorway where you can see the bullet holes. we counted ten shell casings where these evidence markers now are. >> we talked to a neighbor who heard the shots. he said the shooting worries

him because his father owns a business close by. >> times are tough. people are getting desperate. it's a shame. you see people trying to make an honest living and provide for themselves and it's a shame. >> by the time officers arrived, the burglar was gone. he had been driven to a nearby hospital by the three friends. he later died. >> and every person who has a right to protect their family, their property. unfortunately people are put into that position, sometimes the threat isn't always necessarily the best ending. >> the homeowner is expected to survive. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. the coroner's office has identified the man who died as pierre andre reddick junior. north koreas have released the name of the victim. the body of 18-year-old victor manuel gutierrez was found in the roadway on laguna street in downtown concord. he had been shot to death.

if you have any information contact concord police. san francisco police are searching for two men for the stabbing death of another man's dog. the man was walking his dog on 22nd street and bartlett in the mission at about 3 a.m. when he was approached by two other men. one of them grabbed dog. the other brandished a knife. after a struggle the suspects let the dog go and ran away. that's when the dog owner discovered the animal had been stabbed and later died at an animal hospital. people riding b.a.r.t. may have noticed a large presence of emergency personnel. brian flores joins us live to tell us what this effort is all about. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. today's drill was basically a coordination amongst the local state and federal agencies just in case of the worst-case scenario. we talk about airport security all the time, but for federal agencies and local agencies including b.a.r.t. police they say it's equally

important to keep our public transportation system safe. we want to go to video of the drill that took place over at the coliseum b.a.r.t. station. the other locations include sfo, embark embarcadero and oakland. now what some riders may have saw this morning when the drills started was a heavier police presence at those stations including emergency vehicles and k-9 units. all kinds of scenarios were played out today just in case of the worst. we asked police on the importance of the coordination among the different agencies, especially when it comes to public transportation. >> we know based upon what's happened in other parts of the world that transit is a major target. transit preparedness and surface transit is something that needs to be prepared and we are part of those preparedness efforts within our industry. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. service was not affected today. b.a.r.t. says they did give advance notice of the drill today as well to riders. what made this drill also interesting was the fact that there were real life incidents that went along during the

trial. b.a.r.t. says this morning three men were apprehended for staking out cars at the coliseum as the drill was taking place. the last drill of this magnitude amongst the agency was in 2010 at a stationary mill bury train. so far the drill going well. we're live in san francisco, brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. the data breach of the nation's largest arts and crafts chain has been contained according to michael's company officials, but not before a lot of credit cards were compromised. paul chambers joins us live from emeryville where hackers got to about 3 million cards? >> reporter: this store behind me was affected starting in may of last year. if you shopped during that time period you might want to check your credit. >> if you're a crafter or have children, chances are you've been to a michael's arts and crafts store. >> i have this little girl who needs some rubber band loom situation. >> you're coming in here to get science project things, crafts.

>> one thing customers didn't expect is a security breach. on its website michael's ceo tells of compromised data taken from customer's payment card information. some of those who shopped at the 28 bay area michael's stores are part of the 2.6 million people affected nationwide from may of last year through january. >> that's a very long time. and i hope that they just found out which is why we're just finding out. >> the company didn't say how long it knew of the issue but did notify customers of a possible breach three months ago. michael's subsidiary aaron brothers framing also had four bay area stores at risked aing to that company's 400,000 affected customers across the country from june until february. both companies ceo's stated we want you to know we have identified and fully contained the incident, and we can assure you the malware no longer presents a threat to customers. people we talk to say all companies need to step up, and if they don't they'll take matters into their own hands. >> you just got to watch your

information closely. you can't really depend on anything these days. >> i usually use my debit card. i don't like to have cash on me. now it seems like everywhere you go it's almost like you you should use cash. >> retailers need to put security as a top priority. >> reporter: both companies are providing free credit monitoring for all those affected for one year. i'm paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. now to developing news, a magnitude 7.2 quick shook central and southern mexico before 9:30 this morning. it was 50 miles northwest of acapulco where many families are on vacation for the easter holiday. you can see damage in mexico city which is 170 miles north of the epicenter. many walls collapsed and electricity was knocked out in many parts of the city. civil defense crews are checking for more damage. no reports of any serious injuries and no tsunami warning has been issued. that quake comes as people in

the bay areas mark today's date, 108 years since a quake devastated san francisco. this was is ceremony this morning at latas fountain. hundreds of people were there for a moment of silence and to lay a wreath. >> i think it's a wonderful tradition that's been carried on all these years. i think it's a tribute to all the survivor survivor. >> the quake and firestorm killed about 3,000 people and destroyed 80% of san francisco. >> after the ceremony hundreds of people went to o'cools for a breakfast honoring survivors. san francisco mayor ed lee was there. the two living survivors did not attend because at 108 and 112 years old they didn't feel strong enough to be there. ktvu has learned that a body found on mount tam al pius is that of 50-year-old marie

christine sanner was identified by fingerprints. the investigation is still on going. she was reported missing yesterday afternoon after heading out on a hike on wednesday. searchers found her body around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. they believe she may have fallen 40 to 50 feet. she was found less than a mile from where 33-year-old magda lee that was found dead. . >> it's unnerving for shoe. i love mount tam and love running and hiking up there. it makes you think twice about heading up there alone for sure. >> sheriff's investigators say even though both women's bodies were found in the same area there doesn't appear to be any connection other than they were both hiking in rugged terrain. a high school math teacher is behind bars and now facing two felony charges. the allegations involving sex with a minor and what caused the school district to start investigating in the first place. >> sunny and slightly cooler.

be charged. there's not enough evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. she told police she met with the manager to discuss a job opportunity. she says they then had several drinks he sexually assaulted her. she called police after locking herself in the bathroom of a nearby restaurant that that man manages. a math teacher at a san leandro high school accused of having sex with a student has surrendered. leon chang has been charged with two felonies, agenting a minor for sex and statutory rep. an investigation sparked by a tip to the school district that chang was involved in a sexual relationship with the student. students were shocked by the allegations and call chang a good teacher known for making math fun. >> you know, he was a nice teacher. he wasn't -- i mean he was just into the kids, you know. cared a lot about us students. he cared a lot. >> they're currently on spring break. students and staff are scheduled to return on monday. for the first time in its history the university of

california has invited more latino than white students to be freshman at its nine under graduate campuses. a preliminary count shows that more than 17,000 latino students have been admitted for fall. that's 29% of all prospective freshman offered a spot. that's compared to 16,378 white students. asian americans remain the largest ethnic group making up 36% of all students admitted. in san francisco there's a stiff new penalty for breaking rules at the public library. the rules are part of mayor ed lee's call for zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior at the library. they're cracking down on indecent exposure, offensive gestures, cursing and the use of bathrooms for changing clothes and personal grooming. people who break the rules could be banned for three years. some people say the rules unfairly target homeless people. pro russian militants refuse to honor the agreement made yesterday by secretary of state john kerry and other

diplomats. kyla campbell has more on the demands from those militants and disturbing new information about the targeting of jewish residents in eastern ukraine. >> the agreement required pro russian troops to give up their control of ukraine's government buildings. those insurgents said today they're not budging. they're calling on ukraine's interim government to resign. president barack obama said russian leaders should use their influence on these militants in order to ease tensions in ukraine. meanwhile, masked men handed out flyers in front of the main synagogue in an eastern ukraine city. they instructed jewish residents to register their religion and property or face deportation. >> this is not just intolerable, it's grotesque. >> so far no group has claimed responsibility. jewish leaders say the flyers are fake and an intimidation tactic. in washington kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. b.a.r.t. service is back on scheduled to hours after a train derailed near the north concord station.

news chopper 2 was over the scene after the derailment during last night's rush hour commute. the train was heading into a maintenance yard when it went off tracks. no passengers were on board and no obvious signs of damage. oakland police are calling on the city council to buy new radios after another outage last night left officers unable to communicate in the field. ktvu's learned the police radio system went down for 3 minutes last night from 6:31 to 6:34. it's a problem that has plagued the department for years. officer wills get new radios and the matter should go before the full city council no later than june. also in oakland, there's a new plan to provide more fire protection as temperatures rise and fire danger increases. each of oakland's 25 firehouses has been closed for 72 hours on a rotating basis. these are a cost cutting measure the city put in place two years ago. it saves about two and a half million dollars a year, but now the economy's improving. the city and firefighters union have reached a tentative agreement to stop the brown

outs. >> the important thing is that our citizens are going to be safe, particularly during this drought season which has a high fire risk. >> the city council and firefighters union still have to approve the measure. both are expected to pass it. if they do, brown outs would end on july 1st. >> this is good friday, one of the holiest days on the christian calendar. this morning 2,000 orthodox christian pilgrims walked down the narrow alleys of jerusalem's old city. some carried crosses of what was believed to be the final path christ took before his crucifixion. in australia the duke and duchess of cambridge got in the easter spirit. they were greeted with cheers cheers and applause this good friday. they ate chocolate and met with fans. they visited the royal agricultural society of new south new south wales pavilion and watched a demonstration from lifeguards.

here in the bay area, more than a dozen people gathered outside the front gates of lawrence livermore lab for the annual good friday protest. the group opposed the continued development of nuclear weapons. last year several protesters were arrested for blocking the road. for the last 30 years religious groups have demonstrated at that lab. not a bad looking friday afternoon. we start off with a little bit of fog, and that fog is starts to increase towards the coast. inland it's sunny and occasionally a few high clouds. then things have calmed down, beautiful green hills still. we could use some rain. maybe next week. this weekend looks pretty good. we do have the fog, so that will play into your weekend forecast and easter sunday forecast. i don't think the fog's going anywhere. maybe to the northwest north coast it is. some of the fog touching the coast. 50s there right now. upper 50s or low 60s. inland temps starting to bump up into low 70s. i don't know about that 76. the 72 in concord, 73 in

antioch, fairfield 70. the bookends in santa rosa. 62 in san francisco. they were 59 last hour. a very brisk 52 redwood city at 50 degrees. moffett at 68. the pacific northwest had a lot of rain yesterday. things are calming down. we had the tail end of that system. we get a little break here and we'll continue that break except for the fog. it does look like a northwesterly breeze might take care of some of it. 59 in tahoe. 63 in reno. if you're watching us on channel 11 up there, everything is starting to drive to the north at least for no. we'll get a decent weekend, a little warmer each day, especially on sunday. a little low spinning in southern california giving them a lot of cloud cover. for us we'll focus on attention on a system coming in tuesday. does not look like it had a lot of moisture with it. it's going to be cool and breezy. and some of the inland temps might only be in the upper 60s.

mateo are being warned after a mountain lie lyon was spotted this morning. he was seen just after 6:00 this morning on lexington avenue. officials advise people not to run. instead try to look bigger by waving your arms and making noise. avoid hiking and jogging when mountain lions are most active at dawn and dusk. uber is getting ready to add a new fee. and prices are going up at chipotle mexican restaurant. we'll tell you why.

u.s. financial markets along with those in europe and asia are closed for the good fight at holiday and asian countries were trading, took place earlier today. stocking were mostly higher. stocks on wall street finished mostly higher yesterday which reported disappointing earnings on wednesday. california's unemployment rate stayed basically flat in march at 8.1%. the state employment development department revised february's numbers which was 8% up to 8.1% as well based on new figures. nearly 12,000 jobs were created last month. the biggest increase came in professional and business services with 3100 jobs. the chipotle mexican restaurant chain is raising menu prices. it doesn't think customers will mind too much because of the quality of their food. the cost of ingredient is going up, especially for beef, cheese and fresh vegetables. they said for the first time it's hiked prices in three years.
