good morning. happy easter. welcome to mornings on 2. it is sunday, april 20th, 2014. >> the that is a good looking easter sunday. looking over the walnut creek area. isn't that a gorgeous shot? we have patchy fog out there. low clouds drifting inland in some areas. very patchy. mostly sunny skies. i'm seeing along the peninsula and along the coast, gray skies over that area. the wind has shifted. high pressure building in today. today is going to be a warmer day. yesterday at this hour the winds were twisting through fairfield to 30 miles per hour. take a look now. the onshore breeze has actually reduced considerably and some of us dealing with a northeast and northwesterly wind so a drier day in place. those winds will help drive up our temperatures. a chilly start in the 40s for

santa rosa. getting out early this morning. a cold one for you, 50s around the bay. low 50s there. sun rose about a half-hour ago. sunny skies for your afternoon. temperatures will warm 3 to 6 degrees around the bay yesterday and five to ten degrees warmer than yesterday. widespread 70s around the bay. low 60s for the coastline and for the coast if you think about heading that way, there is a high surf advisory and keep that in mind. we're warmer today and today will be the warmest day over the next several. cooler tomorrow, even the chance for scattered showers. i'll have a look at that coming up. >> four people stabbed at a bar around 1:00 this morning at the sp2 come mynal bar and restaurant. officers first received a report of one person getting stabbed but when they arrived on scene, they found three

other victims. all are men in their late 20s. >> all we know, there was some type of fight and argument inside before someone was stabbed. >> the condition of the men has not been released. investigators are interviewing witnesses, but no arrests have been made. a bay area easter tradition that dates back nearly a century is happening right now in san francisco. you're looking at live pictures of the easter sunday services. there is a crowd there gathered. lots of people there. you can hear some music. it is the highest peak. this features the mount davidson cross. we first saw it when we brought you that shot there, one of the world's tallest crosses.

one here is fire chief joanne haze white. we'll check back on the celebration there this morning. >> just a few hours ago pope francis celebrated what is christianity's most joyous hopeful day, easter sunday. 150,000 people packed st. peter's square for the mass. the pope's easter message was on current conflicts around the world and he prayed for ukraine and syria and the attacks. >> bay area churches are celebrating with special easter masses. the church began a service minutes ago and it will hold easter celebrations at 9:00 and 11:00 this morning. >> st. mary's has a service at 7:30 with an easter concert this afternoon. they will have mass at 8:30 there. there is also a spanish version of the service at 10:00 a.m.. >> there is a strong warning

for anyone who plans to go to the beach today. use caution while in the water, because a high surf advisories in effect and there is an increased risk of rip currents and waves. >> they recovered the body of a man who went missing after a boat crash. the man and his friend were both thrown into the delta waters after their boat crashed near the bridge yesterday morning. crews spent several hours searching for the man before his body was found. the man who survived was in the water for about 20 minutes before someone pulled him out. >> i gave him a hug and, you know, he was shaking and he remembers hearing a thump on the boat and that is about it. >> investigators say the men were in town for a fishing tournament. cause of the crash is still

under investigation. the family of a san diego man who disappeared in san francisco last year said they have renewed hope that he will be found safe. christian hughes went missing in february of last year while visiting a friend. his aunt said she saw someone that looked like him. his family and friends have been searching the area hoping to find him. >> you're always going to hope and pray that he is and a for my family of course he is alive. he has not been home. he is alive. he is out there. >> the family has help find christian hughes on facebook. if you see him call san francisco police. >> they are stepping up patrols to deal with 420 gatherings. 420 has become the unofficial day of celebration for marijuana smokers.

last year the city had thousands gathered at the golden gate park and left ten thousand pounds of trash behind. they will look for illegal parking, camping and drug sales and open containers. they hope the park is peaceful for any sunday gatherings. >> thousands will be running in the boston marathon. it promises to be an emotional event after two pressure cook kerrs exploded near the finish line. the hern family, aaron hern who is now 12 was seriously injured in the blast. claudine wong has more in boston where she talked with the herns about an event that forever changed their lives. claudine. >> reporter: good morning, mike. yes, we're here live at boston commons this morning. this area is significant. this is called the parade route. you can see they have the flags up, the barricades up. the race doesn't even come

through this area, but because of what happened last year, this is where they will have many of the runners check in tomorrow morning. they will be dropping off their bags. they do not want any bags near the finish line. then they will bus them over to the start line which is a good distance away from here. then they will take on that legendary 26-mile course. among the runners that will be in the race tomorrow are the herns. i met up with them yesterday and talked to them about their trip here. it has been a whirlwind visit to fenway and lots of visits to the many people who helped them in what was a dark time. tomorrow may be tough. they will run like last year. their son aaron and daughter abbey will watch like they did last year. the newest member of the family, caroline, who technically ran it last year in her mom's belly will be there, too. it will be about turning the negative into a positive for all of them. abbey said she is excited.

>> every one experienced this in a different way and from their own pe spective and we all have our own different story of this so coming back here and trying to make each one of them whole and meet all of those different needs, that has been a challenge. >> making sure everybody is okay in their different way. >> reporter: so we are now less than 24 hours away from the start of this race. it starts at 8:50 a.m. boston time and then it builds in with the athletes and tens of thousand us. again, this is what they call the parade grounds. you can see it is an absolutely stunning morning. we have seen lots of park rangers, police officers and of course lots of runners in and around this town coming out to warm up before the race tomorrow. we'll meet up over to where the finish line is to see some of the runners who have come.

one of them came within about a half a mile from that finish line when the first explosion went off. she is back to try to tackle this race again. we're going to bring you her interview coming up on mornings on 2. live from boston, claudine wong, ktvu. >> she will have live reports for you. also stay tuned tomorrow when she will have live reports flew out the marathon. california counties affected by the prison realignment plan say they need more money to deal with the extra inmates. some are sent to county jails instead of prisons. some say more money is needed for new jail cells, rehab programs. the governor has been visiting different counties to see how the three--year-old law is working. >> it didn't take long for them

in ore co. the sharks heading into game two against the kings. the sharks went on the attack early against the kings in game one on thursday. they won 6-3. now after tonight the sharks will head to los angeles for game three on tuesday. tonight's game starts at 7:00. this afternoon the annual bring your own big wheel race is being held in san francisco. this is video from last year's race. it'sy starts at 4:00 on vermont and 20th street. the kids' race is first followed by the adults. event organizers say the permit for these races is difficult to get and drinkingk and smoking will not be a under loe. they are also asking people to clean up after themselves. >> the costumes are allowed. >> even the easter bunny is here. >> well, a chase with a robbery suspect lands a police officer in the hospital. what we're learning about his condition this morning and the charges the suspect now faces.

d a slow moving landslide is taking over part of jackson, wyoming. on thursday it sped up and slid more than three feet in less than 24 hours. it split a home in half, broken sewer lines and destroyed a walgreen's. they are trying to stop it before it does more damage.

looking for hope and embracing victims of other tragedies too, helping keep colorado strong. >> even the most violence of hate could not shake us. >> that was jessica reporting. many of the victims' families are still fighting for mental health services for students and stricter gun control regulations. >> the weather is halting the search for three hiking guides still missing after friday's deadly avalanche on mount everest. it killed 13 guides, at least 7 others were pulled to safety. they were preparing for the main hiking season on ever rest. they were carrying tents, food and ropes to prepare routes for hikers coming from around the world. >> about 1% of every one leaving base camp is not coming back. as a workplace sta sit stick, that is off the charts.

remain partly cloudy for the afternoon. as early as tomorrow, a cooldown in store and a few scattered showers monday night into tuesday. to save us a little bit of time, i'll fast forward us into monday. tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy skies and perhaps a few peeks of sunshine. for all the way into monday night, we didn't see much of any rain, but by monday night, 10:00 it starts to get into the north county and then in the overnight hours it slides through. you saw how it went. if you like scattered showers, monday night into tuesday morning, we could be a little breezy tuesday afternoon. sure would like to see more. not going to see it at this point. we'll track that for you, because the timing could change a little bit. 44degrees right now in santa rosa. a few areas still quite chilly. just as cold as yesterday.

a 50-foot deep sinkhole in central florida community has put two homes at risk. they were asked to evacuate. if it spreads more, people could be asked to leave. last night crews worked to fill that hole. sumter county deputies say it opened about three weeks ago and was filled with dirt. they believe it opened again last night because of vents rain. they are celebrating easter morning in aus trail ya.

the world couple could be seen in sydney for the easter sunday service. many tried to snap a photo of the pair. they sat in the front row. about 800 people attended the service. they are inviting young moviegoers on a sin mat tick easter egg hunt. pixar has been hiding eggs in films like toy story and monster ink franchises. they want fans to check out the eggs and see how many they can spot. >> the first family including president barack obama will entertain the children in the annual white house egg role. they will role an egg on the south lawn. it has been held at the white house as far back as 1876. >> from easter egg hunts to

rain. >> happening now, an easter tradition. >> happening now an easter tradition is taking place atop the highest peak in san francisco. an hour ago bagpipes kicked off the service at mount davidson. this is the 92nd year of the event. several dozen gathered for the service which included live music and messages of hope. fire chief joanne haze white is there. we'll hear the inspirational words at the 8:00 hour from one speaker. a few hours from now, the sights and sounds of easter, it is set to get under way at 10:00. there will be free activities for the kids, live entertain the and a visit from the easter

bunny. then the parade will head down union street. >> the park will close the vehicle entrance when the parking lot is full. the city is raising parking fees for that lot today. it will cost $10 per car, $6 for eligible seniors, and disabled. it averages 2500 visitors in an 11 gash 11-hour period. >> the boston marathon is tomorrow, but many have auld ready run through the streets. an estimated ten thousand people took part it 5k race yesterday. many said crossing the finish line was a sense of empowerment and away to take back their city, but tomorrow is the day they have been looking forward to the most. in less than 24 hours thousands of runners will be there for the boston marathon. many that survived last year

say they are coming back just to finish what they started. claudine wong is in boston with the story of a couple who almost lost their young son in a tack. >> reporter: we came here to fenway park to meet up with the family. it was part of their whirlwind trip to boston but this was about reunion. they met up with larry, a man they haven't seen since the race last year, a man who put a turn cut around aaron's leg and got him tonight ambulance. >> i never saw aaron again. today is the day i saw aaron. i waited an entire year to see aaron. everyday i worked. everyday i woke up to see him. the only way i could get closure within myself to get closure. >> i have gone back to the site and and i wasn't as emotional

as i thought i would. my mom said i am stronger. >> the family is now focused on monday and the marathon. aaron's mom says it is important to close the loop. it is important for all over them to cross that finish line. claudine wong ktvu news. >> another person running in the marathon is from santa rosa. she finished last year's race before the bombs went off. she says she and other runners are refusing to let the bombings intimidate them from enjoying their passion for running. happening now, hundreds of athletes have taken over the sleets for the silicon valley triathlon and supersprint fry@long. it features 9.3-mile swim, 24.9- mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run. just beyond the finish line is plenty of food, beer, live

music, as well as an easter egg hunt. >> a san francisco police officer injured while chasing two robbery suspects has been released from the hospital. he was hurt in a crash with the suspect's car near golden gate park. they are 48-year-old kenneth perry and 37-year-old joseph de poly. perry faces charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated assault and felony evasion and reckless driving. he was booked on possession of ammunition and a probation violation. >> it happened shortly before 11:00 last night. they got a call from the medical center about two gunshot victims who had come into the hospital. police are now asking anyone with information to come forward. an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow for the body of a mill valley woman found. searchers recovered the body of

the 50-year-old thursday night. she had gone for a hike with her dog and a friend the night before. they have not found anything suspicious but they are going to wait for the autopsy before returning a cause of death. investigators say there is no connection between her and the death of the 33-year-old. >> los angeles police are investigating the stabbing of two men at venice beach on the oceanfront walk last night. both are in their 20s. their condition has not been released. it is not clear what led up to the stabbing but they think there was more than one suspect involved no arrests have been made. chevron is pushing forward to modernize the refinery despite some criticism. this past week dozens showed up to voice their concerns about

[ no audio. ] >> they scaled back their plans after they first stopped their proposal. they will rule on the environmental impact report in june. tomorrow pg&e executives will appear in court for the 2010 pipeline explosion. an indictment filed earlier this month charges them with safety violations. they allege they knowingly relied on incomplete information when assessing the safety. [ no audio. ] a massive fire killed 8 people and destroyed 38 homes. he is accused of peeping into a woman's home. he faces a charge of misdemeanor peeking. authorities say he was prowling near a neighbor's home wearing

only socks and underwear. he faces six months in jail if convicted. the trial is going to last just a few days. they are using a new method to crack down on prostitution. they are publicizing the men for prostitutes. there is a drug counselor, personal injury attorney and a father of five. officers hope buyouting the johns they will discourage other men from soliciting prostitutes. >> we're more interested in them because without the demand they wouldn't have anything to do. they won't have a job. >> police are posting the johns' mugshots on social media sites and sending letters to several cars that police have seen driving the streets where prostitutes work. >> they want to make sure private school buildings are safe during the next

earthquake. they have to meet certain safety standards but not for private schools. it would require a structural evaluation within three years. a report found that 33 percent of private school buildings in the city could collapse in an earthquake. banks and retailers across the united states are turning to new technologies to prevent hackers from stealing information. they say the data breaches at target helped to speed up the technologies. many banks are going to microchip credit cards. many retailers are working with banks to create a temporary token number tagged to your account. >> we could learn more details about transforming the coliseum into a sports and entertainment center. a group is going to submit a

letter of interest for one of the city's three sports teams and how it plans to fund the first phase of the project. several stores in a sacramento mall closed their doors to make way for the new arena. the k street mall will be demolished this summer. shoppers took advantage of sales. >> during christmas, it was lively, big trees and santa claus. i will miss it. >> i am a diehard king's fans. i hope it revitalizes the downtown area. >> it will not affect the west end of the mall with macy's, the movie theater and several restaurants. >> the l.p.g.a. will come later this week. one of the businesses that is expected to bring in a lot of

money, 70% of the rooms are reserved. the tournament is expected to bring in 70,000 spectators. >> crews began installing 2 1/2 acres of sod. stadium officials say after much debate they decided the stadium would have the turf that uses less than 50% of the water and holds its color longer. the home opener has not been scheduled yet. the new field will see action august 2nd when the earthquakes will host the seattle sounders. it will be interesting to see the progress they made there. >> yes. >> beefing up security at the golden gate park. it is sparking concern for both police and parents. a big weekend for marijuana smuckers in colorado. why there is a whole new meaning in that state. >> warmer air filling in the bay area for your easter

divers found 1 three more body is inside a ferry that sank in south korea. more than 250 are still missing. 174 people survived. some crew members were confused and questioned whether evacuating this area was it right move. the captain is under arrest on suspicion of negligence. hundreds in south korea are marking easter sunday by praying for the missing ferry

passengers. many are high school students who were on a holiday trip. rescue crews are hoping to find survivors that some may be alive in air pockets in the ferry. a submarine is making the 8th trip searching for the missing mall lay shen airlines plane. malaysia flight 370 has been missing now for six weeks. the under water search is in an area where a signal was detected that could have been coming from the plane's black boxes. a 12-year-old boy died on an outing with his boy scout group in washington. the accident happened yesterday morning near a remote camping area. some of the boys were trying to role a tree into the lake when it hooked on to one of the boy's jackets and then rolled over him. >> accidents happen when you're

out. accidents happen anywhere when you're out in the woods. >> they activated an emergency locater beacon. it took them three hours to get to them. the boy's father was among the four adults and ten scouts on the trip. a group of protestors are continuing their fight against the plan in the park. >> yesterday demonstrators gathered outside of the zoo gates. they are against the zoo's plans to build a new visitor center and gondola ride. they would build a new area for species that lost their habitat. >> they will build about california animals pushed out of the area by development and they will have a wild area. >> zoo officials say they have

in a boat crash. they were thrown into the waters yesterday morning. crews spent several hours searching for the man before his body was found. witnesses say the man who survived was in the water for about 20 minutes before someone pulled him out. investigators say the men were in town for a fishing trip. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. the family of a san diego man who disappeared last year have renewed hope he will be found safe. christian hughes went missing in february last year. his aunt said a woman reports seeing a man who looks like her nephew on thursday in the haight district. his family and friends have searched the area hoping to find him. >> you're always going to hope and pray he is a live. of course he is alive. he is out there. >> the family has set up a facebook page to help spread the word called help find christian hughes.

that's where it was last year. there are memorial markers and crowds of people taking pictures at the line which is painted into the street. we have been talking with elite runners they worry about time they are wanting to participate although they are trying to run a fast race. this is one of these races and they say as many as they have run, they are amazed by the response they have been seeing. >> i was here last year, i had to come back, i wasn't sure how many would come back. this has been a show of unity and solidarity. it is incredible to have more runners than last year. i think it is the most determined group, one of the faster groups we had. a lot of people when it happened they put on their calendars. >> reporter: now a short distance from where we are, less than a mile is the commons area and the parade grounds.
