we are live until san jose international airport where a 16-year-old boy stows away on a flight from hawaii and lives to talk about it. we will tell you about the exhausting conditions that he endured. tens of thousands of runners ready to start the boston marathon. we are live in boston with the extra security measures in place. >> i think it was a difference between that child's life and death. >> heroic rescue on the east bay. a man jumped into the water to save not one but two children from the water. >> thousands of people converged on golden gate park to celebrate marijuana. what the area looks like this morning in the aftermath of that event.

good morning. we want to take you live to the san jose airport. we have a story everyone is talking about today. the fbi confirming a teenager from santa clara stowed away in the wheel well of a jet. tara moriarty is there talking to people and she has more on the video clue that is backing up this incredible story of survivor. it is monday, april 21st i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's take about weather and traffic. steve, how does it look? >> it looks clear to cloudy. they will be increasing clout the morning. maybe a little bit of sun farther south. change is brewing here. clouds and increase of the clouds. it will be cloudy and cooler. cloud cover right now favoring the north bay. that is for sure. and mostly fair to the south.

40s and 50s but the lows have been coming up as the cloud cover moves in and the breeze picks up. especially sfo which was 21 right now. so there will be a little breeze. and dramatically cooler on tuesday. our front might give a little bit of rain to the north coast. there is not a lot to it. we will get light rain as well. a couple .01 tonight. there is not a very strong system. maybe a stronger one into the weekend. sun for awhile and then a lot of clouds. light rain possible. 60s and 70s. here is sal. steve, good morning. on this monday we have a couple early commutes. for example, we have the bay bridge. before 6:00 the metering lights went on. the traffic is backed up beyond the 880 over crossing. almost to the maze. the drive time is 15-20 minutes across the entire span. unless you are in the car pool lane which makes it a lot easier. no major problems when it comes to accidents or stalled

vehicles on the span. now let's move along and take a look at the san mateo bridge in case you are tries to use this this -- use this bridge. if you are driving on highway 4, it's noticeably lighter than usual. until complains here. 680 also looks good. let's goal back to the desk. incredible story out of san jose. the fbi says a 16-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from san jose all the way to hawaii and survived. ktvu tara moriarty is joining us now from the san jose airport with more on how the teenager managed to get on to the plane in the first place. >> airport security video shows he jumped over a fence in order to steal up into the wheel well of that plane. we have reached out to airport security officials to see how the security breach could have

happened. we still haven't heard back yet. somehow this 16-year-old boy was able to make 5.5 hour flight from san jose to maui. maui news released this photo of a teen being taken away. hawaiian airlines flight took off around 8:00 saturday morning and landed in hawaii around 10:00. >> it blows my mind. my goodness. and somebody said he's not trouble. i go oh yeah if that was my kid, he would be in trouble. >> now the fbi took the santa clara boy into custody after he jumped off the wheel well and started wondering around the tarmac. he ran away from home after he had an argument with his family. he is now in child protective services. no charges have been filed as of yet. meanwhile we put a call into the tsa and fbi to find out how this could have happened and when or if the boy will return home. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2

news. >> there have been similar incidents just last year a 15- year-old nigerian boy survived after he stowed away in a wheel well. that teenager survived in part because the plane reached an altitude of only 21,000 feet. in 2010, a 20-year-old romanian man survived a 97 minute flight from vienna to london heathrow flight. the boston marathon is officially under way. the first group of people in the disabled version just took off. you just moved to the finish line. >> reporter: that is right we're on boylston. if you look down the street you can see where the blue banner is up and it says john hancock that is the finish line. you can see the area is all

blocked off. we have bare kids in front of us. we have boston pd standing by making sure no one gets through here to that area. if you look across the street you can see we had to walk here about a mile and to get through here i want to show you one of our backpacks. you can see they went ahead and put on the inspected tag on the backpack just to make sure everything was clear it had been looked at. we came through the boston common area. that is where all the runners are getting in. what they do is the process going there they put all of their stuff in clear bags, check it in the bag check, board buses, and head on out to the start line. that process is continuing as we speak. we did talk to bay area runners who say it was very important

for them to be here. >> yeah. an event like that can't influence the way we run our daily lives. >> reporter: back live out here at the finish line again here on boylston. very famous area of this town. you can see a lot of activity. it will be awhile. a couple hours. a little bit longer before we see folks through here. you mentioned the mobility that goes through. they have a couple other waves and then they have the elite group coming through. the fastest men hoping to finish in two hours. which is oddly fast. live in boston claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. >> by the way claudine is a great athlete. she wishes she was running. about 15 minutes ago the mobility impaired division left

the starting line. the elite women they will start in 20 minutes from now. 6:30 our time. the elite men and the first wave of other runners they start at 7:00 a.m.. own then there are three other waves between 7:25 and 8:25. the first elite runners are expected to cross the finish line a few minutes before 9:00 a.m.. coming up at 6:30 we will go back to boston for another live report on this morning's boston marathon and the much tougher security. z local runners meantime will race in san francisco this morning in support of the boston marathon. that run starts in just under an hour from now at the ferry building. at the foot of market street. it will cover a four mile loop around the embarcadero top i -- to aquatic park. this morning police

arrested an armed man following a nearly eight hour standoff in san jose. it happened on del paso avenue near camden avenue. these are live pictures of the scene this morning. you can see a coup the police car there is. we understand that some of the streets are still shut down right now. it all started at 8:00 last night when police received reports of a man firing a gun into the ground. an oakland man is being called a hero for a water rescue of two children. that happened late yesterday afternoon at marina park in san leandro. jose was walking the shoreline with his family when he heard a girl cry for help. he jumped into the water, grabbed her, and spotted an arm flailing even further out. so he went in a second time and

brought the boy in. he was able to revive them. >> luckily the good samaritan was there and did our job. >> the boy was taken to children's hospital in oakland. police say he was with an older brother on the shore before going into the water. san francisco cleanup crews will be back out at hippy hill picking up trash left behind from the 420 marijuana sell brake. thousands gathered yesterday for the annual unofficial marijuana event. at least eight people were arrested for various offenses. one was arrested for -- but no shots were fired. cleanup cost the city $10,000. there is no word yet on how much it will cost this year. right now it is 6:10.

south korea's president is calling the actions of the crew of a second for -- of a sunken ferry boat murderous. newly released video reportedly shows the captain getting medical treatment shortly after reaching shore. the captain at first told passengers stay in your rooms and waited a half hour to order an evacuation order. passengers could not reach lifeboats because the ship tilt

sod quickly. crews are holding out hope they will find passengers alive. most of the people on board were high school students. two men are in custody for two separate stabbing attacks on nurses at l.a. county hospitals. in a first attack yesterday morning authorities say a man bypassed security at one hospital, stabbed a nurse several times, she is in critical condition. at a second attack a man grabbed a nurse from behind and stabbed her in the ear. it has been 15 years since the shooting at columbine high school in colorado. yesterday this memorial was held in littleton, colorado remembering the 12 students and one teacher who were killed when two students went on a shooting rampage before they killed themselves. survivors and family members went to yesterday's event. people from as far away from here in california also stopped at the memorial site to pay their respects. >> decided to make the drive

over here to pay our respects. obviously 15 years ago is a long time but we did remember when this happened and it was a big story in los angeles. i can only imagine how big of a story it was here. police responded to a report of a suspicious person. when the man spotted the officers, police say he jumped into his car and sped away dragging one of the officers. that officer declined medical treatment at the scene. the police department has not provided a description of the suspect or his vehicle. time is 6:16. a san leandro high school teacher accused of having sex with a teenager is due in court this week. he surrendered to authoritiers last week after prosecutors

charged him with statutory rape. once again bart is showing off its fleet of the future today. i want to show you video of people taking a look at a not else -- model at the new bart cars. this was in san francisco last week. today riders will get a chance to check it out at the fremont bart station. that starts at 2:00 p.m.. several more show off events are scheduled for this week ahead. they will have better seats and bike racks showing you the location of a train and its next stop. the first bart cars are scheduled to arrive in 2017. right now it's 6:17. i want to check in with sal for a look at the commute. sal. >> all right. traffic is getting a little busier now on the morning commute. i want to tell you we are looking at 80 westbound as we head out to the mccarthur maze.

no major problems here. but you can see traffic is busy and the drive time between carquinez and mccarthur is up 15-20 minutes. getting heavier and heavier. let's move along to the toll plaza itself. it's about a 15 minute delay. it's backed up to the foot of the maze. the metering lights are on and the drive time between the end of the line and the san francisco exits 20-25 minutes. highway 4 getting slow traffic. we had an earlier crash near the willow pass grade. no major problems on 680. and the traffic continues to look good on 680 to san ramon. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. good morning, everybody. we have clouds already increasing here. some low and high. 80s yesterday or 70s. it was very warm. in fact 60s and 70s.

temperatures coming down ten degrees today. high pressure system getting bumped out of here. cooling begins. there could be a little bit of light rain. again it wouldn't be until later. more likely tonight. right there at computer generated. the front is still a ways away. stronger system might roll in here around friday. it will be a week where we get a little cloud cover deck and cooler temps. already increasing clouds. 40s and 50s on the temps right now. i expect these to continue to come up. north coast those of you watching up there yeah you have a better opportunity for rain. we get a lot of cloud cover and not much in the way of rain. 30s, 40s, and 50s. 57 sacramento. our system is kind of toppling

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. many children still getting codeine medications. more than a half a million children are given codeine every year. ucsf researchers say there is new evidence that children's bodies process the drug many different ways and in a small

number of children that can be deadly. for one-third of young patients though, codeine has no apparent effect at all. a washington state community that was ravaged by that huge mud slide they still celebrate it happy easter. ing a yule easter egg hunt was bigger than ever. the children searched for easter eggest and candy. >> we have to keep going on the daily life. >> the people that organized the celebration say their work was worthwhile. tomorrow president obama will travel to this mud slide area. iowa army veteran proved

himself a hero once again by saving the life of a neighbor. james yates says he was on his way to the ceremony when an 11- year-old boy started banging on his door saying that his mom needed help. when sergeant yates ran over, he saw courtney pearson pinned underneath her blazer. >> my back was pinned to the ground. i couldn't move out of there. i could breathe but it was difficult. >> sergeant yates was able to jack the car up high enough for pearson to wiggle out. she had been fixing a leak when the car slipped from the jack and fell on her. she is planning to call sergeant yates personally. large crowds showed but did they spend? san francisco businesses will -- hundreds of people attended the event which features rides and vendor booths.

this afternoon and evening. possibility of very, very light rain. it will usher in a cooler pattern and get breezy tomorrow. 40s and 50s on the temps. farther north better opportunity for rain. even that looks pretty weak but there is not a lot to this system. there is not a lot of cloud cover over us. so the cooling begins. very light rain maybe late, late. but again i doubt much falls here. 60s and 70s down and out of the 80s. good morning. right now we are looking at a list here that is not really well there is not a lot going on. however, the bay bridge ramped up early this morning. if you think of the drive time from the end of the line to the san francisco exit, it's about 25 minutes getting into san francisco. also looking at the commute here. the traffic is moving along

relatively well. a little bit of slow traffic. but 101 and 85 are doing well. so you don't have to worry yet in the santa clara valley. let's go back to the desk. sal, thank you. happening right now some of the elite runners are just now starting the 2014 boston marathon. thousands have returned to the spot where over a year ago tragedy struck. pahl low is live in boston. what kind of security measures have been taken for the race? >> reporter: dave, i can tell you plenty of them. there are police nearly everywhere. there is about 3500 local, state, and federal police here that are working to keep everyone safe here. we can tell you that also big brother is helping. there is about 100 cameras that have been set up throughout the

route. keeping an eye out for special activity. >> and polo give us the mood out there in boston. >> reporter: there is a lot of excitement in the air. you can see it for yourself here. we're at a park only a few feet from a finish line. america for boston a group started about a year ago asking groups and organizations to write their messages of hope on some of the prayer canvass. it's hard to make them out. from louisiana, maryland, some saying be bold boston. we are boston proud. there is a lot of support here. a lot of folks focusing on that now compared to the tribute. now it's about honoring the lives cut short.

>> thank you for telling us about the security and what is happening out there. thank you. time is 6:33. hundreds of the run evers taking part in this year's boston marathon are from right here in the bay area. some are just a couple blocks from the finish line when the bombs exploded. some are first time marathon runners looking to honor last year's victims. >> i've always wanted to run boston, but after the events last year, i immediately knew i was going to sign up. >> more than one million people are expected to cheiron the boston marathon runners today. that is the biggest crowd ever at the marathon. this year's race will have 36,000 runners. the second largest field of runners. the boston marathon stops in massachusetts. the rue goes through several --

the women in the elite runners category just took off. just a few hours ago police arrested an armed man following an over night standoff. it all started at 8:00 last night after police received a report of a man firing i a gun into the ground. police were able to make contact with the man and he was taken into custody at 3:30 this morning. the really incredible story this morning is out of san jose. the fbi says a 16-year-old boy from the area stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from san jose to hawaii.

>> reporter: passengers that we spoke to this morning say they normally get to check in curb side but not anymore. airport security video shows a teen hopped a fence here at the airport in order to sneak up into that plane yesterday. somehow this 16-year-old boy made it on the 5.5 hour flight from san jose to maui. he does appear to be unharmed. investigators say hawaiian airlines flight 45 took off around 8:00 sunday morning and arrived at 10:00. he massed out after take off and regained consciousness after the plane landed. passengers told us they are concerned about security. >> that does make me nervous. that is a pretty major security breach. if a kid can pull that off you worry about someone with a dangerous agenda. >> the fbi took the 16-year-old

into custody after he jumped off the wheel well and started wondering around the tarmac. he is now in child protective services. so far we haven't received any calls back. live from san jose i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. the fbi says a flight reached an altitude of 38,000 feet. temperatures at that height estimated at 80 below zero during the 5.5 hour journey. the faa says heat from hydraulic lines in the wheel well also retained heat in the tires may help keep the stow away warm. hyperthermia has happened but the faa says the impact of hyperthermia may be reduced adds the plane garage -- reduced as the plane gradually

descends for landing. several pg&e executives are due in court. they will be facing charges stemming from the 2010 san bruno pipeline. the utility company knowingly relied on incomplete information when determining the safety of the pipe that eventually exploded. the explosion and fire killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. she had gone for a hike with her dog and a friend the night before but authorities say she and her friend decided to separate after it got dark.

this follows a discovery of mold at an aging fire station there last month. many are worried the mold could pose a real risk to their health. the mold issues are the latest potential health threat for those living on the small island in the middle of san francisco bay. just last month the u.s. navy announced it will test all of the homes on the island for elevated radiation levels. that came after the recent discovery of radio active items buried near the homes where about 2,000 people live. heroic rescue. the actions of one man to try to save two children. what he spotted in the water that made all the difference.

cleanup will continue this morning following san francisco's 420 marijuana celebration. county alex savidge is -- ktvu alex savidge is in golden gate park. what are you finding out there? >> reporter: good morning, to you. city crews were out here last night. they did some cleanup. let me show you around here. there is still quite a bit more work to be done to clean up hippy hill. we are right next to sharon meadow. this is where the marijuana celebration took place here. you can see piles of trash everywhere. this wasth scene yesterday as thousands of pot smokers and weed vendors alike came together in the park for this

annual celebration of cannabis. there were police out in force mostly with under cover officers. and those officers arrested eight people. although police have not said what they were arrested for. for city crews the big concern was trash that is left behind by party goers. last year it left behind a huge mess that cost the city $10,000 to clean up. this year the city urged people to pick up after themselves. there was a major campaign. one man that was out here yesterday held up a sign asking fellow attendees not to trash the park >> we bought a sign and bought extra bags to pass out. >> reporter: and before the 420 event wrapped up yesterday, there were city workers out here. they were getting paid overtime to come out and pick up trash so they could stay ahead of the game yesterday. now we are told there will be

more volunteers coming out here later on in the morning. we will bring you out knew to a live shot. you can see there is a city work truck right now that has just arrived here at sharon meadows to begin the process. the process has already begun but they will continue the process of trying to get rid of all this trash here in this area. so we will keep an eye on the effort here and try to talk 20 folks coming through the park this morning. but still quite a bit of cleanup to do. live in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. there was new meaning to 420 celebrations in colorado. it was the first marijuana celebration since the state legalized the recreational use of marijuana. people from across the country gathered in denver to light up. denver police reminded people that smoking pot in public is still illegal in the state. organizes say 100,000 people came this year which is a much larger crowd than last year. time is 6:45.

malaysia airlines making headlines again this morning. this time for an emergency landing. the airline says a tire burst when a plane was taking off from kuala lumpur. the plane had to turn around and make an emergency landing. this comes six weeks after a malaysian airlines flight disappeared in the i should january ocean. crews are look for that missing plane. they plan to complete their search at the end of this week. but now a tropical cyclone moving south of the over the indian ocean could hamper their efforts. robotic submarine searched under water again yesterday but there is no sign of the wreckage. several sonar pings and signals traced to that search area may have been coming from that plainness black boxes. new this morning vice president joe biden arrived for a two-day visit in ukraine just about an hour ago.

the president's visit comes a day after a shootout at a pro russian check point in eastern ukraine that killed three people. the shootout happened despite an international agreement that was reached just last week. it was aimed at easing tensions there. biden is scheduled to meet with leaders and u.s. diplomats stationed in ukraine. time is 6:47. let's check in with tori campbell to see what is coming up on mornings on 2. >> reporter: good morning. coming up in minutes, miss america is calling for an appeal and a senior high school senior is facing serious punishment for what he said to the beauty queen when he visited his school. and this morning people living in one trailer park in san jose are facing the strong possibility they could all be millionaires. the reason they may soon be living the high life after years what they describe as poor living conditions.

those stories and more coming up. >> thank you. 6:47 is the time. back over to sal to check in on traffic. >> all right pam and dave. we are still looking at a commute that is busy in some areas and lighter in others. highway 4 slowing now. finally. we see slow traffic. all of a sudden it arrived here at highway 4 coming up. it does get better by the time you reach the 242 interchange but there is a crowding there. and looking at the commute 25- 30 minute drive time if you are taking time from the very end of the line until you make it to san francisco. and we have slow traffic on 580 in livermore as you drive through. and 680 from the dublin interchange heading down through most of the pleasanton into fremont and the south bay. a lot of that will be slow traffic. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. we have cloud cover moving in.

it will cool down today. there is not much to this system. there is a lot of breaks in these clouds. so some sun here in the morning. you remember the 80s. they were there yesterday. 81 santa rosa. today 70s in san francisco. from 75 to 64. additional cooling on tuesday as the system slides by. any rain would billion very light. changes today in the form of cooler weather. higher clouds begin to move in. and they will have a breezy cool pattern on tuesday. another stronger system might make its way for a better opportunity. sun to the south. clouds already increasing to the north. if there is any drizzle it might impact us. 40s on the temps or 50s. they had very low 40s for awhile. even up north there is not a lot to this system. if you are watching us there will be a lot of cloud cover like we do. 51 in ukiah.

classic cheese dogs and the labels do not show the hot dogs contain cheese. that could cause serious problems for people who do not tolerate dairy products. they are being recalled. anyone who has the june 16th best by date should return them to the store for a replacement. if you think your are spending more on gas lately, you are right. gas prices has jumped a penny a day. we are paying about 23 cents a gallon more. time is 6:51. a man hunt is under way after a san francisco police officer was dragged down the street by a car. how this all enfolded and what that police officer did right after that scary incident. >> also

welcome back. time is 6:54. in florida a real earser sunday -- easter sunday surprise. 200 people were packed in a fort meyers church last night for a holiday concert when a car smashed through a wall and went right into the church sanctuary. at least 20 people were hurt. many of the victims were trapped beneath the car.

>> 20 or more parishioners were using jacks from their cars. they must have came out and grabbed these jacks and attempting to manually lift the people off several people. >> the driver of the car told police her brakes gave out. she pulled into the parking lot still not clear if she will be ticketed. this morning police in fairfield continue to look for suspects in a weekend shooting that killed one man and injured a teenage boy. both victims were rushed to the north bay medical center following the shooting saturday night. the 27-year-old fairfield man died at the hospital. a 15-year-old boy was treated for gunshot wounds to his shoulder. it's not clear exactly where the shooting took place but it was fairfield's fourth homicide of the year. san jose police continue to investigate the stabbing of four men. they were called to the sp2 communal bar and restaurant at 12:30 yesterday morning.

they had a report of one person being stabbed but when officers arrived they found three other victims. all four are expected to survive. police say the stabbings followed some sort of fight or argument inside the bar. >> time is 5:55. a former san francisco firefighter accused of driving a fire truck while drunk he is due in court this morning. 43-year-old michael quinn is expected to be arraigned on three felony counts including causing an injury while driving under the influence. back in june quinn ran a red light and hit a cyclist on fifth and howard streets. the cyclist suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung. after the crash quinn was seen on surveillance video at a participate drinking several glasses of water. if convicted he could get up to three years in prison. former concord police officer accused of stealing prescription drugs is also expected in court today. matthew switzer is accused of

using his status as a police officer to take prescription drugs from senior citizens. he faces five felony counts including fraud and elder abuse. his client became addicted to painkillers after suffering an injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. a pair of snow mobilers say they will be a lot more cautious in the wilderness after a frightening encounter with a moose. it happened in maine. the entire attack was caught on camera. now the couple insists they were not chasing the moose but they now admit they were following it a little closely. when it stopped and turned on them, they didn't have much time to react. >> what i can think of is what i had to put between myself and the moose. and unfortunately that was just the snow mobile. >> he ran back to his wife's snow mobile. she had a gun with her but worried shooting the moose would make the situation worse so she fired off a warning shot. the moose left shortly after.
