6:01 pm
the assembly. documents indicate the wheel well is 6 feet above the ground. stow away would have to hang on to a web of pipes that line the wheel well. >> i would think he would have to hold on to something first till the airplane got air born and then maybe they could rest against the wheels. >> reporter: he is a retired pilot. during his career he estimates he spent 2,000 hours in the cockpit of a boeing 767. avoiding getting crushed by the wheels is just the first challenge. the wheel well of a 767 is not pressurized or heated. a plane can climb up to 38,000 feet and the temperature can drop to 54 degrees below zero. >> you would have to prepare for it. you might be able to survive with warm clothes. a lot of luck. and probably an oxygen bottle.
6:02 pm

6:03 pm
but this teenager's adventure has many questions how secure is the airport. you need a ticket to ride. so how did a danger breach the perimeter to get on the plane? he is looking into issues of airport perimeter security. >> we have to learn how a teenager was able to have access. >> it looks easy. >> reporter: they walked along the mineta san jose international airport western and southern fence lines today. >> it is ridiculous how he got on to a flight without anyone seeing him. >> the airplane field a ball toss away from where cars drive by. and a bicyclist stopped to watch the plane. we saw an occasional police car.
6:04 pm
no one stopped to ask us what we were doing. mineta san jose international airport says no security is 100%. >> we have 1,000 acres and we have cameras. there is a lot of surveillance video to review. >> reporter: this is the standard fence that surrounds most of the airport. i am 5'5" and this is 6 feet tall. we see these signs every 25 to 50 yards. i don't see any visible surveillance cameras except i see one up there in the distance. we saw surveillance cameras at the north end and razer wire in other places. somehow a 15-year-old boy got past all of it. >> what concerns me is if somebody more sophisticated, more plotting takes time to try opull this off. what kind -- to pull this off. what kind of access could they
6:05 pm
have. >> reporter: he says they have to make sure and do more to make sure this never happens again. not just at mineta san jose international airport but at any airport. noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. >> today we reached out to sfo and oakland to ask officials about lessons learned. this is video from news chopper 2 over oakland. you can see security fences there. a spokesperson says they have additional layers of fencing within the property and facilities. sfo has a perimeter fence to keep people out. both airports say it was business as usual today and nothing has changed. our coverage continues on www.ktvu.com. we posted videos and more on airport security on www.ktvu.com. following developing news out of the south bay.
