that traffic is looking good all the way across about an 11 minute drive time between the toll plaza and foster city. and if you are driving in the bay area right now, just a lot of road work. you can see thize cons on the maps there. 580 is clear. 4:30, let's go back to the desk. >> thank you. we are following breaking news in novato where an hour ago four people escaped from a house fire. i want to go to a picture taken by our reporter at the scene. the house is located on chase street near highway 101. we are being told the fire is started in the garage. firefighters are now investigating how it began. we have a crew on the scene. we'll bring you a live report in the next half hour. while bart trains started rolling a half hour ago, some muni lanes have not hit the lines right now. >> reporter: good morning. neither bart nor muni run 24

hours a day but scott weiner wants to change that. yesterday he introduced a resolution that would essentially create a task force. a working group to focus on late night transportation. weiner say there is are limited options for people who work off hours and for people who leave bars at night. san francisco's nighttime economy employs 50,000 people and generates $50 million in tax revenue. >> because i'm completely alone on the street and i don't know what is around the corner. it can be scary. >> reporter: now that transportation task l force will include members of late night industries and it will be headed up by the san francisco entertainment commission. the group will report back to the board of supervisors in six months or so with possible solutions for those that need after hour transit options. coming up this morning at 5:00,

we will tell you why business owner here in the city is backing expanded hours for bart and muni. live in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. now just to let you know on weekdays bart's first train starts at 4:00 in the morning. its last train beginning around midnight. bart begins operating on saturdays at 6:00 in the morning and on sundays at 8:00 a.m.. today san francisco police and the chp will target two of the city's high traffic, high accident areas. a joint enforcement operation will take place along vanness avenue. the crack down will run from 7:00 to 10:00 this morning. and 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. this afternoon. people walking in the area have been hit and killed this year. police in san jose say sam man on a motorcycle is in unstable condition after slamming into a car. it happened at 6:45 last night

at the intersection of brenham lane and jarvis avenue. the motorcyclist ran a red light and hit the side of the car. the man was wearing a helmet but still suffered major head trauma. >> we do have a witness that was at the intersection at that time and what they saw is the motorcyclist did run the red light. >> the people in the car stopped and are cooperating with police. they don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. there is information about the teenager who survived a five hour flight from san jose to maui. the 15-year-old was reportedly unhappy living with his father and stepmother in santa clara and hoping to get on a flight to sue malaya. he had no idea that he was headed to maui. we're also learning that the still unnamed teenager is at

the santa clara high school. his friends and classmates are amazed he survived his journey. >> i'm just really shocked and glad he made it. >> hawaii's department of social services reports the boy is resting comfortably at a hospital. they say they are working on the boy's safe return to california be he is not facing criminal charges in hawaii or san jose. hawaiian airlines has released this statement involving the bizarre security breach. quote hawaiian and its contractors responsible for handling our aircraft in san jose will continue to assist government agencies of in their investigation of this incident. the incident could lead to major changes and security at san jose airport. the director of the airport is working to insure no one ever sneaks on to the airfield again. she made her first public comments on the incident while strongly -- critics are demanding to know how a boy

scaled a fence, got on to the tarmac and spent six or seven hours hidden below the plane before it left for hawaii. san francisco firefighter is recovering from injuries. the 911 call of a fire first came in around 2:00 yesterday afternoon. it was reported on walter street in the city's triangle neighborhood. minutes later firefighters arrived to find that strong winds had spread the fire to attic and roof of two nearby building. firefighters say the homes there are old and made of wood and because they are so close together, the wind became a bigger problem. >> at times the wind direction shifted. when we initially got here it was pushing the fire toward the building on the left. about ten minutes into the fire the wind direction swirled and switched and pushed the fire into the building on the right hand side. >> overall three buildings were damaged. anyone who lives in the buildings had to leave for the

night. the firefighter who was injured suffered moderate burns had recovered. a group of teachers filed for a restraining order against the antioch school district after their request to convert a high school to an incident charter school was denied. it is one of the best performing schools in antioch. teachers want to make the school an independent charter school which would leave it outside the districts school. the district denied the request and instead converted the school into a dependent charter which leaves the district in control. a hearing on the restraining order is scheduled for next week. u.s. supreme court justices have upheld the ban on affirmative action in michigan. justices ruled 6-2 that a lower court did not have the authority to set aside the measure approved by michigan voters back in 2006. california has a similar ban in yesterday's decision. the justices did not rule

directly on affirmative action but on a states right to ban it. a bay area group tried to get california's affirmative action ban overturned calling the supreme court decision racist. by any means necessary staged a protest yesterday. it shows those in power are out of touch with minority. the university of california says it was admitting more hispanic latinos than whites for the first time. latinos account for 29% white, 27% blacks, 4% asians were the largest at 36%. intellect a rare stunt to stud -- the archaeologist tell the chronicle that multimillion homes are being built on a 400 indian burial ground. the developer brought in scientists to study the site under the direction of american indian monitors. those monitors gave their

channel 2 morning news. time is 4:42. the a's have rejected a deal to play at the oakland coliseum for the foreseeable future. the a's issued a statement last tight saying the tenure lease proposal does not meet all of their requirements and the team cannot accept the offer. it's not clear what happens next in this ballpark battle. the a's have been pushing major league baseball for permission to move to san jose over the objection of the san francisco giants that consider the south bay their territory. in the meantime they have agreed to short term extensions to the oakland coliseum. they share the coliseum with the raiders and the silver and black may be backtracking on their desire to stay as well. the raiders missed a monday deadline to submit a letter of interest. there is no word on why raiders owner mark davis has declined to issue that letter. in the meantime the warriors are making plans to move out of oakland to a new home at san

francisco. the new project unvailed this week calls for building an 1,000 seat arena near at & t park. oakland is not giving up the fight to stop the warriors from moving across the bay. >> they don't have the stadium built yet. they are still making hurdles. we still feel if we can offer a better site a better deal for them. >> they have been playing in oakland since 1971 but the team never adopted the city's name. mental health workers are holding a one-day strike. workers held a similar walkout in 2012. they accused the hospital of cutting costs that jeopardizes mental health services. the hospital disputes the charge saying it's been recognized by mental health professionals for its quality of care. public schoolteachers in san francisco say the math does

not add up. last night they rallied outside of district headquarters. saying they don't make enough to live in the city. teachers are asking for a 21% raise over the next three years. the median salary of teachers is less than $60,000 a year. far less than what is needed to buy a home in san francisco. hundreds of volunteer doctors and dentists will provide free medical care in san francisco today. it's called bridges to health. care is offered on a first come, first serve basis. it's at the san francisco armory today and tomorrow from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. volunteers will be at the oakland coliseum on friday. time is 4:45. and one bay area water district is offering an unusual program to help customers get through california's drought. the dublin services district has created a large tap where people can get recycled water to water their lawns and gardens for a small fee. the districts plants can

produce as much as 11 million gallons of recycled water a day. the idea is thousand to make the extra recycled water available to the public. >> it can be used for a lot of purposes. >> the water district board spent three hours last night discussing how to achieve water district cut backs of 50-60%. they are considering a ban of washing cars and turning off city fountains and they may limit how often people can water their lawn and business landscaping. customers have done a great job of cutting water usage in the last two months so the water agency decided to continue to ask them to cut their water usage by 10%. as long as customers continue to be careful about how much water they use, the cuts will remain voluntary. food talks are making their way to contra costa county.

balloon pilot blames wind for his unexpected landing on the bridge. it came down near a shopping center at san diego. there it is. shoppers helped grab the ropes and direct it away from the street light. the pilot was taking eight passengers away for a ride. no one was hurt but the pilots ego may have been bruised a little bit. >> you see those a lot. coming up it is being called a death sentence for trees. kind of a serious situation here. how experts are trying to protect one of california's biggest industry from a deadly disease. the item that recently washed ashore in australia that is now the focus of investigators. ?ññ;ñ;

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. more bodies discovered in a submerged ferry. the death toll stands at 150 with another 150 people still missing. rescue crews say they have checked all areas for victims. they're now having to tear through cabin walls to try to find others. most of the victims are from a high school near seoul. the ferry capsized enzoning a week ago. the captain and some crew members will being criticized for how they handle the situation and from escaping from the sinking ship.

one crew member who did stay on board to help crew members was honored as a hero. the 22-year-old woman spent the last minutes of her life helping others escape that sinking ferry. she was handing out life jackets as the ferry began to go under. when asked why she wasn't wearing a life jacket, she said crew members would be last and that she had to help others first. searchers looking for the missing malaysian airlines jet has recovered debris what they are calling an object of interest. they describe it as a sheet metal with rivets and fiberglass coating. the object washed ashore on the coast of western australia. however, a government commissioner is playing down hopes saying the more they look at it, the less excited they are but today an under water drone completed its tenth mission. it has scanned 80% of a search zone without finding anything. time is 4:54.

san jose police are searching for clues in a gruesome and mysterious homicide. warehouse workers found the body of a truck driver early yesterday morning. his grieving family members were at the scene a short time later. witnesses say the victim was lying on the ground right next to his big rig. >> rolled up on it and sure enough there was a gentleman bound with zip ties in his hands laying this his under wear and t-shirt. >> police say the truck driver was headed to salinas. he had stopped at the warehouse parking lot because he thought it was a safe place to sleep. so far there are no suspects or no known motive in this crime. investigators in contra costa county are asking for the public's help in finding a homicide suspect. they released this picture of kyle. he's accused of shooting and killing nicholas calling. cal lin was killed in an

unincorporated area. investigators took another man into custody in connection to the deadly shooting. he is being held on $2 million bail. police in southern california say a suicidal man created a very dangerous situation in one san diego neighborhood. investigators say he was hold up in a home during a standoff when he somehow managed to turn on a natural gas line. that forced the evacuation of an entire neighborhood. utility crews cut off the gas and electricity but no the man was nowhere to be found. coming up in our 5:00 hour, we are adopting to to -- we are continuing to follow the breaking news. we want to go to live pictures from the scene. how the family in a nearby home escaped and the connection we are learning about to a well known rock band. >> plus an increase in whopping cough cases in one bay area county. the step health officials want you to take to protect yourself. >> we are starting off pretty
