clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, you want everybody to take a sweater or jacket. >> yeah a little chilly out there. tori campbell just tweeted out 41 alamo. we do have mostly clear skies. 30s and 40s to 50s. mostly sunny and a little bit later on. 41 fairfield. santa rosa 44. i bet it feels colder in walnut creek. a a little chill there. 43 degrees. livermore is 42. there is a little bit of a breeze but temperatures being held up two or three miles an hour will bring up a couple degrees. 17 out of the northwest from half-moon bay. mostly seasonny, maybe partly cloudy at times. that ushers in some of that cooler air and occasionally sun and clouds. 60s to very, very low 70s. here is sal. steve, we have traffic conditions changing a little bit now that we're at the 6:00

hour. chp has issued a wind warning. separate. this is something completely separate from meteorologists. they issue wind warnings when they think it might be a little dicey for you to drive across spans. just be careful across bay area bridges. a lot of them. not all of the bridges have been issued the warning by chp. you can see if you look at your tv slightly obscured but it says high wind on bridge there. moving along and taking a look at the bay bridge westbound. this is about a 15 minute drive time into san francisco. no problems on the lower deck. that is a six or seven minute drive time across the bay. if you are looking at the nimitz freeway, the traffic is moderately heavy through here. it's already getting a little slow as you drive past 238. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. we continue to follow developing news out of novato where four people escaped from flames from a garage fire started moving toward the

house. the fire started at 3:30 this morning in novato. tara moriarty is there in the neighborhood where tara you talked to one of the people that lived in that house. >> reporter: the man that lives there says he had just gone to bed. he was woken up by the sounds of popping noise and yellowish light. when he looked out the window he saw that his garage was on fire. the fire broke out in the detached garage at the home off chase street. fire crews got the call around 3:15 this morning. firefighters arrived within four minutes. the four people that live in the main house were able to get out safely before they arrived. the fire did however gut the garage. it damaged two coarse and blew out windows in the house. >> through a bathroom i went to see what was going on. the shop was going pretty good. started hearing loud bangs. ran back in. put what i have on.

grabbed a fire hose. >> reporter: now luckily no one was hurt. an interesting side note firefighters tell us this property was once part of the mansion and the area where the fire broke out was the servant quarters. an electrical fire destroyed the mansion in the 60s and state parks later acquired the land. coming up the arson investigators will sift through everything once the sun is up. but we were told there used to be a marijuana grow operation. it does look suspicious. i also witnessed a neighbor punch a homeowner in the face. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. new information now about the santa clara teenager who survived that five hour flight from san jose to maui hidden

inside the wheel well of hawaiian airlines jet. >> the lights are on. presumably folks are home. we are hoping that somebody will come on out today top let us know how they are doing and whether the family members here will be heading to hawaii any time soon to bring that teen stow away home. ohio's department of human services says the boy is resting comfortably and the child welfare officials are arranging for his return to northern california. we are learning more about security breach 37. the latest information shows the teen entered the airport six or seven hours before the maui bound flight took off. the breach could happen again at the airport and is calling on the government accountability office to look into airport perimeter security. the airport is saying they will use this breach as a learning

cool ever tool hoping to prevent it from happening again. >> our security program does meet and exceed all federal environments. we do have an extent track record here for security at our airport. >> again still no word on exactly when that teen will be returning to the bay area. we are still again hoping the family will come out at some point in time today and let us know how they are doing. how the teen is doing and when he may be coming back here to santa clara. live in santa clara christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. 40-year-old prince is facing a murder charge in connection with the death of kimberly robberson. her body was discovered on april 5th. police say robertson left a bar, waiting for a bus when he

picked her up. investigators say they do not have any information that the two knew each other before then. the mother of one of the students that died in that fatal bus crash on interstate 58 earlier this month she has filed a $100 million lawsuit. that is how much she is seeking in damages from fedex. fedex trucks have a history of catching fire. the truck was on fire when it crossed the freeway and slammed into a tour bus. that bus was filled with college bound teenagers and chaperons. we know the little name of a girl who died monday. the medical examiner's office says she was eight-year-old megan yang. she was in a mini van that stopped on the side of highway

85 on monday. a six-year-old boy and a 41- year-old woman were also inside. the chp says the jeep rankler left the road and hit that van sending it across the freeway where it was hit by an suv. new numbers confirm the incase in whooping cough. health officials say the child attends martinez. the county health department is working with the school to protect other students. experts say whooping cough starts with cold like symptoms that turn into coughing and gagging fits. it can last for weeks. on friday the principal notified parents there was a whooping cough case at the school. the student is now at home and is being treated.

>> i know they get another one before seventh grade. hoping that is doing the trick. >> right now there are 19 reported cases of whooping cough in contra costa county. public schoolteachers says the map doesn't add up. the teachers are asking for 21% pay raise over the next three years. they say the median salary of teachers is less than $60,000 which is a lot less than what

is needed to buy a house in san francisco. the two problems firefighters had to deal with while trying to get that fire under control. >> also next plants being torn out of the ground in golden gate park. the cause for concern that goes way beyond just theft. >> good morning. right now we are looking at commute that for the most part looks good. a little windy on the spans and now a new crash in the east bay that is blocking several lanes reportedly. we'll tell you more about that straight ahead. >> it's a little cold out there. we have a few low ever 30s and upper 40s. i will show you the forecasted temps coming up in seven minutes.

welcome back. time is 6:13. new this morning president obama is in japan. it's the first trip on his foreign noachian asian visit. we are look at video of the president arriving in tokyo. this was two hours ago. among those greeting the president as he stepped off air force one, there is the u.s. ambassador to japan. caroline kennedy. after japan's president is -- after japan the president will visit malaysia. president obama stopped in washington state. he wanted to see the mud slide

disaster up close. the president toured the mud slide by helicopter. he also met with the families that lost loved ones. and he thanked the first responders and volunteers that have been working around the clock since that mud slide hit on march 22nd. >> to see the strength in adversity in this community should inspire all of us. because this is what america is about. when times get tough we look out for each other. >> the crews out there are still at work digging through mud and cutting through logs and other debris. the official death toll is 41 but two people are still missing. >> a sign that obama administration is is not backing away from the ukraine crisis, american soldiers are on the move this morning. 600 u.s. soldiers are being -- those are all eastern european countries that either border or are near ukraine and russia. now the u.s. troops will be

conducting military exercises. it is to demonstrate nato's commit to defending the region and its allies. there are 67,000 american troops currently in europe. time is 6:14. the new york city police department defending an effort to get more involved with social media. yesterday the police department asked people on twitter to post photos with its officers using the #mynypd. soon people were posting photos with comments that suggested police brutality or misconduct. the police department says this was meant to be an open dialogue so they expected negative comments. other people defended the police department saying there is a lot of good police officers. golden gate park workers are on the lookout for thieves who are ripping plants right out of the ground. forging in the park is banned. park officials fear they may lose rare plants. they are also concerned someone could die from poisoning if they take wild mushrooms,

deadly night shade or hemlock plants. a man who lives across the street from the park who asked not to be identified says he confronted four elderly women about a month ago who was stealing what appeared to be wild ginger plants. >> at that point i walk the over and told them what are you doing? and they slowly started to one by one leave the area. >> san francisco police say they are ready to make field trips to city parks to try to catch the plant thieves in the act. tomorrow the san jose sharks will try to get the kings out of the first round of the stanley cup playoffs. >> the sharks won game three. game four tomorrow night in l.a.. if the sharks win they advance to the next round. if the kings win the sweep moves back to san jose for game

into friday. saturday maybe lingering rain. slightly warmer on sunday. the country's third largest lender looking to solve 50 of its bank branches. city bank says the branches hold $3 billion. sources say all the banks to be sold are located in rural areas from sacramento to just north of los angeles. the city apparently wants to keep the officers in the offices that is san francisco, san diego, and los angeles. it has been selling off branches outside the 150 largest cities in the world. the number of california homes starting the foreclosure process is increasing. that is according to a real estate research firm. during the first three months of this year more than 19,000 houses and condominiums received default notices. that is 3.5 more than during the last quarter of 2014. here in the bay area default notices were up just two tenths of one percent.

welcome back. police in belmont searching for two men caught on surveillance video stealing almost $6,000 worth of cigarettes. they robbed a walgreens store at 4:00 a.m. on friday morning. police were alerted by an alarm. the thieves were only inside for two minutes and then they were gone by the time officers arrived. u.s. supreme court justices have upheld the ban on affirmative action. justices ruled 6-2 that a lower court did not have the authority to set aside the measure approved by michigan voters back in 2006. now california has a similar ban and yesterday's decision the justices did not directly rule on affirmative action but on the state's right to ban it. a group called bay area -- a group in the bay area trying

to get california's affirmative action ban overturned called the supreme court's decision racist. they are called by any means necessary. they staged a protest at uc berkeley yesterday. and says the ruling shows those in pour are out of touch with minorities. last week the university of california says for the first time it's admitting more la tee thoughs than whites. asians are the largest group at 36%. time is 6:25. we are hearing from the palo alto rock climber the man who survived an almost fatal fall at yosemite. now on sunday 26-year-old blake parkinson fell off a granite wall. a rescue helicopter and its crew carried him to safety. he's in the hospital being treated for a broken back. >> i hit my back on a bolder that was protruding off of this

ledge. it had been a climb i wanted to do for quite awhile. i will have to wait to finish it up another time. >> doctors say as you can imagine parkinson is extremely lucky. despite the fall he gave it a thumbs up. he can still move his hands and legs, he is not paralyzed. the stanford admissions officer planned to go home after going through a long period of intensive therapy. three environmental groups want to stop san francisco from building a pond at sharp park golf course. the golf course is in pacifica but owned by the city of san francisco. the city says having the pond would help control flooding during heavy rains and give two endangered species a happen tat. but the sequoia society and save the frogs organization says it would be toxic to wildlife. no word on when a judge will rule on that matter. time is 6:26. it's a big complaint among people who ride mass transit here in the bay area.

half-moon bay, sfo. mostly sunny, partly cloud eye at times and tomorrow we will see increasing clouds. it looks like rain likely on friday. mostly sunny today. and a tiny bit warmer. upper 60s and low 70s. inland 60s coast and bay. here is sal. steve, good morning. it is wednesday happy hump day to you. let's go out -- i think i heard someone's voice there. this is a look at interstate 880 in oakland. traffic is moving well. no problems on southbound 880. the drive time between downtown oakland and hegenberger road is is five minutes. at the toll plaza we do have a traffic backup of 30. there are no major problems coming into san francisco but it is delay or a drive time of 30 minutes. the problems continue on 880 south. there is a crash southbound 880

just past highway 92 and the traffic will be slow for this short stretch from 238 to 92. now after that, if you happen to get on the freeway in union city for example, it's better than it normally is is. that is because the freeway is actually very slow here. not really getting through. so give yourself extra time. 680 is also a decent alternate. 6:32 let's go back to the desk. we have developing news in know vow toe where -- novato where an early morning house fire is being called suspicious. ktvu tara moriarty is getting more details about the fire and tara, you say an arson investigator is out there going through the rubble. >> reporter: that is right. now that the sun is up, it will be a lot easier to get a look at exactly how this fire started. behind me you can see crews are still here on the scene. we know there was previously a marijuana grow operation in the home with pg&e meters being bypassed. there have been issued here

before and sources tell me the fire looks suspicious but the official cause has not been determined. the man who lives in the house says he had just gone to bed an hour before at a home off chase court. he was woken up by a popping noise and yellow light. and then he looked out the window and saw his detached garage up in flames. 40 firefighters tackled the flames and the chief says four people who live in the main house were able to get out safely before they arrived. the fire gutted the garage, damaged two cars and blew out windows in the house. >> it was just really loud. i'm really thankful the house is still standing. and that the only thing that is happening is they are tearing the walls apart to make sure there is no fire in them. >> reporter: luckily no one was hurt. firefighters tell us this property was once part of the mansion and the area where the fire broke out was servant quarters. jesuit once used the mansion as a retreat and the grailful dead

leased the property to make music. an electrical fire destroyed the mansion in the 60s and state parks later acquired the land. earlier this morning i also witnessed a neighbor punch the homeowner in the face. extra police were called in. obviously tensions are running quite high. but again, we do not have an official cause of this fire and police again are sort of monitoring the situation up there trying to make sure that things don't get out of hand again. live in novato i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:34. police in san jose say a motorcyclist is in unstable condition after crashing into a car. it happened last night about 6:45 at brenham lane. witness told police a cyclist ran a red light and slammed right into the side of a car. the cyclist was wearing a helmet but still suffered major head trauma. >> we do have a witness that was in an intersection at that time and according to them and what they saw the motorcyclist

did run the red light. >> now the two people who were in that car, they were not hurt. they did stop and cooperated with police. investigators don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in that crash. we are following several new developments involving the teenager who survived that flight from san jose all the way to maui in the wheel well of a hawaiian airlines jet. christien kafton is joining us now from outside the teenagers family home in santa clara. christian. >> reporter: yeah, this is still the talk of the neighborhood. obviously a lot of interest still going into this teen who somehow made it all the way to maui in the wheel well of that boeing 767. we're at the home of that teenager right now. the lights are on. nobody emerged from the home. we are hoping somebody will come out and tell us how the family is doing and the teen is doing and letting us know when they will be heading to hawaii. now hawaii's department of human services says the boy is resting comfortably at a hospital in hon lulu and the child welfare officials are

arranging for his return to northern california. at this point no word on a timeline. we're also learning more about the security breach at ma theta international airport. the latest information shows the teen entered the airport six or seven hours before the maui bound flight took off. airport officials are saying they will use this breach as a learning tool in hopes of preconvenienting it from happen -- in hopes of preventing it from happening again. now we have a statement from hawaiian airlines about this incident as well. the airline is saying hawaiian and its contractors responsible for handling aircraft in san jose will continue to assist government agencies in their investigation of this incident. coming back live we are hoping that somebody will come out of the house to let us know again how they are doing and give us idea on when that teen will be returning to the bay area. we will continue to monitor all

the developments in this story. for now we are live here in santa claire ram christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. time is you have 36. happening today you will find extra police at two high traffic, high accident areas in san francisco. alex savidge is joining us live now at one of the most dangerous areas in the city. >> reporter: good morning, to you. you can expect to see a lot of san francisco police officers and highway patrol officers along this stretch of vanness later this morning. they will be doing a traffic enforcement operation on the lookout for red light runners and speeders. the idea here is to try to make the street safer for those on thought. it was earlier this month when a man was hit and killed by a car near this intersection where we are. golden gate and vanness. so far this year the total stands at seven people who have been killed trying to cross streets in the city. four of the victims were struck

along vanness. officers will be focusing on vanness between market and geary. and they will also be giving out warnings in an effort to correct bad driving behavior. this is part of the city's vision zero plan. people we talked to who live nearby are hoping this operation will make a difference. do you fear for your well being as you cross the street? >> i do sometimes yeah. crazy drivers. they are running red lights. it's crazy out in. >> reporter: this operation gets going at 7:00 here along vanness and continues until 10:00 this morning. and then in addition police and highway patrol will also be doing another operation. traffic enforcement here along vanness during the afternoon commute and they will also be doing similar operations nearby on both folsom annoys second streets here in the city.

force >> but tourists and nighttime workers say they have had limited transportation options late at night. san francisco's nighttime economy generates $50 million in tax revenues and more than 50,000 people are employed. >> the clipper card is becoming more and more popular among bay area commuters who ride bart, muni, and ac transit. now the electronic transit fare card is on the fast track to more agencies. a san francisco firefighter is recovering from injuries he suffered when hot roofing tar melted on to its hand while

fighting a fire. the 911 call of the fire first came in at 2:00 yesterday afternoon. it was reported on walter street. minutes later firefighters arrived to find that strong winds had actually spread that fire to the roof of two nearby buildings. firefighters say the homes there are old, they are made of wood, and they are so close together that firefighters say the wind became an even bigger problem. >> at times the wind direction shifted. when we initially got here it was pushing the fire toward the building on the left. about ten minutes into the fire the wind direction swirled and switched and wound up pushing the fire into the building on the right hand side. >> no tea fall three -- in total three buildings were damaged. the firefighter that was injured suffered moderate burns but will recover. time is 6:40. what happened to america's middle class? it's no longer the wealthiest

welcome back. happening today the death of 13- year-old andy lopez hurting many of the classmates and friends that knew him. some walked out of school to protest his death. ktvu brian flores is in santa rosa this morning with the reason those students will be walked back on to campus with an attorney and their parents this morning. >> reporter: hi, pam, good morning. about two dozen students walked out of lawrence cook middle school yesterday morning to mark six months since the tragic death of andy lopez. many students say when they protested we were not allowed to return to class. school officials dispute that. the protest began yesterday

morning again here at lawrence cook middle school. students tell ktvu news their intentions were to remain peaceful and protest for a few minutes and return to class. but those students were told by the school that they were not allowed to top. the group then moved to nearby elle city allen high school where they tried to generate more support from students there but the high school went on lockdown. >> we were going to do it for only 30 minutes but then they locked us out of the school. >> reporter: many of the students tell ktvu news that a school administrator made some comments about the investigation. the students eventually ended up near the spot where lopez was shot six months ago. you recall that lopez was shot and killed six months ago by sheriffs deputy erik after he mistook lopez's air soft gun for a real one. they are reviewing possible criminal violations for the adults who walked on to campus in support of a group.

we also understand a district superintendent will release a statement or perhaps comment later on this morning. live in santa rosa brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:45. the oakland a's rejected a deal to play at the oakland coliseum for the foreseeable future. they issued a statement last night. the ten year lease proposal does not meet all of their requirements. now it's not clear what happens next in this ballpark battle. the oakland a's have been pushing major league baseball for permission to move to san jose. however the south bay that is a territory of the giants. in the meantime the a's have agreed to a series of short extensions at the oakland coliseum. meantime the golden state warriors are making plans to move out of oakland to a new home in san francisco. the new project unvailed this week calls for building an 18,000 seat arena. but the city of oakland is not giving up the fight yet to stop the warriors from moving across the bay.

one bay area water district offering an unusual program to help customers get through the drought. the dublin virginia ramon services district has created this large tap where you can get recycled water to water lawns and gardens for a small fee. district water plant can produce as much as 11 million gallons of recycled water every day. the district uses about half of that much to water parks and city landscaping so that the idea is now to make the extra recycled water available to the public. the east bay municipal utility district says its customers have done a pretty good job of cutting water usage in the last two months. so they decided to continue to cut water usage by 10%. as long as they continue to be careful about how much water they use, the cuts will remain voluntary. also happening today hundreds of volunteer doctors and dentists will provide free
